A year that saw some sense of getting back to normal from the pandemic restrictions from the last two years. Attendance at our events has been creeping up slowly (except the picnic which had a record number of participants) and will hopefully get back to normal numbers in 2023! We'll have some great events scheduled for the upcoming year so get your Porsche ready! We need your attendance and participation to make our events work. So if you'd like to help out or have suggestions for an event, please contact any board member.Speaking of board members - congratulations to our new 2023 board. Chris Royter, president; James Bricken, vice president; Nathan Whynot, secretary; Ignacio Fortuno, treasurer; and Jud Walford, past president. Chris has been busy getting new committee chairs in place and committee members set up for the new year. If you'd like to be on a committee, please talk with Chris Royter! We need volunteers to make our club work. And, watch the Longhorn website for the schedule of new events for 2023!I also want to thank LHR member Chuck Bush for representing all of Zone 5 as zone representative. Chuck has spent 4 years traveling the region, helping with questions and problems, and spreading the word of PCA. What a great representative and we have the priviledge of being able to call him a member of LHR! Thanks Chuck for all you've done for LHR and Zone 5!If you're looking for the perfect Christmas gift for your Porsche enthusiast, check out the PCA website Regional shops for Longhorn specic shirts and jackets. And, we still have LHR t-shirts and hats available. Here's wishing you and your family a very Merry ChristMas and ahappy New yearLH ROUNDUP 3

President’s CornerBY JUD WALFORD, LONGHORN REGION PRESIDENTSo we come to the end of this milestone year…our 60th year as a Porsche Club of America Region... quite an achievement. Our club has endured and prospered over a 60 year period. It is a tribute to a multitude of members who gave their time and efforts to promote the automobile engineering and style of Porsche and the camaraderie of the Porsche enthusiast. At our annual Christmas Party we will honor some of those “Pioneers” who, through their devotion to this idea of “ Porsche Cars and People” advanced the Longhorn Region year after year to the point of today when we have over 800 members and some 30 plus activities annually. This column will be my last as President of the Longhorn Region and most of all I want to express my gratitude to all of you who have helped me with our achievements over the past two years. We have not only grown members but increased participation in a number of key events. We have set records for participation and charitable fund raising through events such as Fiesta Challenge, concours and our annual picnic. We have added new events such as new member socials, unique drives and golf tournaments. More importantly, we have seen more new faces volunteering for events as well as Officer and Chairperson positions. This type of growth is the most rewarding and the most beneficial to the club.I also want to thank my Board of Directors and Chairpersons who have helped make my tenure as President easier and more rewarding. This coming year will mark my 20th as a Porsche Club Member and the only regret I have is that I was not active in some of those years. It is the same message I preach every time I meet with other members or write an article for our newsletter or in the many e-mails I have sent to all of you…do yourself a favor and get involved. Find an activity, mechanical or social, and volunteer or just participate. Discover the joy of the fine engineering of your car through an autocross or track day, make new friends at a drive through the Hill Country. You know you enjoy your Porsche or you wouldn’t be a member so take it to the next step and be an active member.Hopefully, I will see you there!LH ROUNDUP 7

ZONE 5 NOTESZONE 5 NOTESCHUCK BUSH, ZONE 5 REP It has been a great privilege to be your zone rep for the last four years. I really didn’t know much about zones or zone reps when I took on the position, but from what I had seen and heard of Lynn Friedman, I wanted to be like her.As the zone rep, you are the representa-tive for PCA National at the region level. In the case of Zone 5, that is 12 regions in the Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas area. The zone rep tries to make them-selves available to help the regions when they need advice, share information from PCA National, and in general help make sure the regions are running smoothly and taking care of you - the PCA member.I have to say that being the zone rep for Zone 5 has been a true joy. I have really enjoyed getting out and visiting the different regions and getting to know- if just a little - many of the wonderful people that make up PCA. And sure, I have seen some nice cars, but it really is the people that make this club special. And it is the people who make this club work. So many volunteers that work tireless-ly to put on the many fun events that make our regions so successful. During region drives, DE’s, charitable events, newslet-ters, etc., there are so many folks that give tirelessly to put on fun and safe events- and they do it over and over. The comradery and sprit of these folks is truly remarkable. All this hard work has not gone unnoticed. Within the last few years, regions in Zone 5 have taken many national level awards- re-gions of the year, family of the year, news-letter of the year, etc. This year, Zone 5 regions are on track to win both actual and factored growth awards. One thing that I have observed over the years is that PCA and Zone 5, in particular, have a unique culture. Despite being a club based on luxury sports cars, we have a very frugal membership. We know a good value when we see it, and PCA membership is a good value whether you drive a couple thousand-dollar Porsche or a half million dollar one. The club is inclusive and thrives on comradery and the enjoyment of our special little German cars. Because we love our cars, we want to take care of them. One of the things I hear from many folks is that they are worried about driving their cars in some of our competitive and drivers train-ing events. Safety is a concern at all levels of PCA and we strive to provide fun events that balance with safety. The only real exis-tential threat to PCA at a National level is if we lose our insurance through negligence. I have been so pleased as zone rep that our regions take this to heart and run safe events. You can be assured that if you drive your car in a PCA event, you are going to have good safe fun. You will be better for it and your car will be happy too!I wish I could tell you who the PCA execu-tive committee has decided as my replace-ment, but that is still in progress and an announcement for another day. Sufce it to say that all the candidates are special and will no doubt be an improvement.I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a joy-ous and prosperous New Year!Chuck10 LH ROUNDUP

Chris’ CrumbsChris’ Crumbs by Chris Royter, Secretary by Chris Royter, SecretaryGo’n Coastal By Chris Royter, LHR SecretaryOctober 6th monthly dinner meet-up found us enjoying a new location, Sea Island at the Forum. This family owned establishment sits at the north east crossroads of I-35/1604N. For being just a few days after our BIG Fall Picnic we still had a nice turn out. This Sea Island has a good sized private room, convienent counter ordering and staff to deliver your meal. The seafood focused menu offers a wide varitey. My go-to here is the colossal Fried Shrimp however, the Grilled Shrimp Salad and Lobster Roll Special looked very tempting.James B. kicked off our meeting portion with a review of the great 60th Anniversary Picnic. To date, that was the largest group gathering with over 100 members and 55 cars participating. Boxstoberfest also enjoyed a great turnout with over 100 cars in the lineup arriving from multipule Zone 5 regions. It is wonderful to see the participation. We have several events coming up to keep things going this fall. Autocross days and our 2nd track day at Harris Hill for your driving pleasure. Tours include Marble Falls, a day at COTA enjoying SVRA action and the Hagerty Car Show along with a shopping trip to Fredricksburg in December. We can all look forward to the Longhorn Christmas Party at The Club at Sonterra. Visit Club registration to sign up and have some fun times. Longhorn Region welcomed five new members enjoying their first monthly dinner tonight.Flora Tallman Fly’n in her 2020 Yellow Boxster S Elva Marquez Rock’n in her 2014 911Jin and Rusty Gilbert Cruz’n in their 2015 Boxster SKorrin Webb Slam’n in his 2014 BoxsterWe look forward to seeing you at more events soon! Chris’ CrumbsChris’ Crumbs by Chris Royter, Secretary by Chris Royter, SecretaryMessy Meetup By Chris Royter, LHR SecretaryFirst Thursday is our monthly dinner gathering so November 3rd we landed at the Longhorn Café on Blanco Rd. In the 80’s, A&M and OU friends bought this location, started Longhorn Café and painted the sign maroon. Place looks pretty original inside and we’re grateful the parking area had been repaved. There is a decent sized party room and after placing counter orders, the crew delivered the meals to us. I enjoyed their Bean Burger w/onion rings, aka: The Big Messy!Jud Walford kicked off our meeting with a review of upcoming events. A golf event at the Quarry, Auto X, a Holiday drive and our annual Christmas Party at The Club at Sonterra. Remember to bring your unwrapped gift to the Christmas Party.Drive tour chair Michael Sorbera reviewed the SVRA @ COTA event and a fun drive with holiday shopping in Fredrickburg. In addidtion, it is time to get 2023 drives on the calander. Those interested in becoming part of this planning, we have a meeting scheduled for January 14th. For more info, contact Michael: sorbera@gmail.com. James Bricken reviewed our upcoming AutoX dates. The Tree of Life Church is a great venue and we are fortunate to be allowed use it. These events run best with 30 or more participants. We are looking at attracting other clubs to join us and encourage you to give it a run. This is a great opportunity to sharpen your driving skills, and have fun. Everyone is welcome. Sign up through Clubregistration.net.We always enjoy members sharing their Porsche experiences with the group. Roundup editor Shelley Matthews welcomes all tales of your adventures. Meet our New Secretary -- NathanWhynot Tell us a bit about yourself/background? Originally from Arlington Texas, I joined the Navy in 2005 and did 13 years between 3 submarines and a tour to Afghanistan. I'm married to my wife Amy and we have 3 kids (girl 17)(boy 15)(boy 10). Currently working for AWS. We live on the South West of San Antonio. How long have you been a member of LHR? I joined PCA and LHR the first week of May 2022.Why did you want to run for an office? I originally ran because I felt like I could contribute to the club and wanted to be more involved. What skills do you bring to the club in your leadership position? I feel with my time in the military has helped me to be able to interact with different types of people and to be able to perform under pressure when things need to get done. I'm very reliable, resourceful, and I'm able to look around at the people around me and know and understand their strong suits to get things accomplished. What are your goals for the club in the next year? So far in the little time that I've been with the club I feel like we do a lot of things that involve our cars aka drives and going to different places but I also feel like as a club we should do more people interaction adventures along with those drives.Need a Christmas gift for your Porsche Enthusiast? Check out the PCA website on the regional shops at https://www.pcawebstore.org/regions/LHN for Longhorn specic wear. Also, we have LHR t-shirts and hats available for $10 each.LH ROUNDUP 17

Drive to Marble Falls Article by Steve Wright and Photos by Steve Wright and Mike SorberatwiNs!Seventeen cars lined up at the RIM for the October drive to Marble Falls. The first stop was at Mark Motors where they opened the show room for some exotic car browsing. There were plenty of Porsches, Ferraris, McLarens, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Mercedes, Corvettes and few other specialties to choose from. Did they make a sale? Only time will tell. After the stop at Mark Motors, we bypassed Boerne (the annual Hot Rod show had downtown Main St. closed) and headed for the hills. FM 474, 473, and Crabapple Rd led us to lunch in Blanco. Old 300 BBQ was the favorite spot to eat. They served great barbeque and deserts, plus the UT-OU beat-down playing on TV – Hook’em Horns! We took some unfamiliar back roads on a scenic route to Marble Falls, passing a Miata and classic BMW club along the way. Our pit stop at the Family Business Beer Company included a craft market for some unplanned shopping. Every car had some extra baggage after the stop. Once in Marble Falls, some folks ate ice cream, others had pie, and at least one had both.Getting ready to head out...LH ROUNDUP 19

A Day at the Races by Lucas WhynotI woke up super early because I couldn’t sleep anymore from being excited to see all the cool Porsches and race cars! Dad and I left around 05:30 a.m.to meet up with dad's car club and drive to COTA. I ate some breakfast tacos while dad put some gas in the Panamera. After I was done with my tacos, me and dad left with the rest of Porsche Club from Buc-ee's to go to COTA. While driving I saw a bunch of Dodges and said to dad those are not my favorite. I saw the sun rise right before we got to COTA and thought it looked really pretty. I thought we were lost because it felt like dad was doing circles but we pulled into the gates and waited in a car line forever. Finally, a random guy running everywhere pointed at dad to park. Dad parked then we got out and I helped him wipe the car down for the show. I saw a lot of cool cars and the Dodges that are not my favorite too. We stopped where dads’ friend was working and he told us to get into his golf cart. He drove us into the pits!! I saw all the race cars! I got off and ran to first garage I saw, and it had 3 Porsche race cars in it! The drivers gave me donuts, cool ranch Doritos, and a coke. I almost spilled my drink because one of the cars was going super fast on the track and was crazy loud! Me and dad walked around for a while and I saw a Ferrari 458. Those are my favorite cars! I said "dad take my picture and send it mom!" Then we went a little further and I got to sit in a real race car and I met the lady that drives it! She was super nice! We found my dad’s friend and he drove us back to the car and we listened to a lady give us a bunch rules. I wasn’t sure what for what so I asked dad when she was done "what was that about?" Dad said we were taking the Panamera onto the track! We got into the car and waited to be lined up. As we drove around the track all the people with with flags on the track were waving at me so I waved back. I looked up and saw all the people on the bridge waiving so I waved at them too. Once we were done going around the track we parked and dad took me to get pizza and he got nachos. The pizza slice was huge! Me and dad walked around for a little while then I saw a black COTA hat that I had to have. So I got that and dad got a shirt. After that me and dad were tired we got in the car and headed home. That was my great day at COTA.Editor's Note - Lucas is the 10 year old son of Nathan and Pam Whynot. He attends Ladera Elemementry School, likes Porsches & Farraris, soccer, and football.LH ROUNDUP 21

Since I became a full-time caregiver for my wife, my outside activities have been curtailed. I’m not complaining but I still needed something to relieve stress and taking my ’83 911 out for a short spin on Saturday mornings has served the purpose. Well, recently that “spin” proved more exciting than normal. My drive covers about twenty plus miles and includes a 5-mile run on our local interstate. By the way in Texas the speed is 75MPH on this one. As I’m accelerating on the on-ramp and merging with the truck traffic I hear and feel the front tire throw up something but since I had not seen anything in front of me I assumed it was a rock. Not so lucky, for less than a minute after I heard the noise, and while cruising in the left lane I hear a louder noise, the rear end becomes loose, and my rear-view mirror is filled with white smoke. I turn on my flashers and the next several minutes are consumed with me maintaining vehicle control and working my way across traffic to the right shoulder. There is no shoulder on the left. Thank goodness the trucker behind me was alert and he put his flashers on and provided cover for me to get to the shoulder. Once safely there I got out to observe the damage not knowing what to expect. This is what was left of my left rear tire - not what you want to see when on a busy highway. It could have been much worse. The mudflap protected the rear of the car and only a 3” square in the lower portion fiberglass bumper was damaged and easily fixed. So, what happened...the 1/8” hole in the tread explains it all.The tire deflated and came partially off the rim almost instantly. The good news is the bead of the tire stayed on and prevented damage to the wheel. Now let me share some dos and don’ts. First, maintain car control and put your flashers on. DO NOT apply brakes as the rear end is already loose and braking will move the weight forward and cause it to get looser and a spin could result. I reduced throttle to just enough to keep the car balanced while slowing and working my way to the shoulder. The extra drag of a missing tire helps to slow the car. Did I mention how appreciative I was for the aware trucker behind me. Once on the shoulder and slower braked smoothly to a stop. Make sure you are as far off the driving lanes as possible but still on hard surface. Remember mine was a rear tire so I still had steering. Should this happen with a front tire, the car will pull sharply into the blown tire so your choice of which side of the highway to get off on is decided for you. Once safely stopped on the shoulder I made two calls. One to a neighbor telling him to bring a spare, a jack and an impact wrench from my garage and the second, to the local police…not using 911. I explained the situation and said it was not an emergency, but I would sure be happy to see a cruiser with all its lights on parked behind me, they obliged. All ended well and it only cost me tire, some minor fiberglass repair, and some scotch for my neighbor. By the way, the tire was a Bridgestone RE71 R and was only 2 years old with less than 4000 miles and no track time but with that large of a puncture no tire would survive. Thank you to Discount Tire as the local store found the only replacement and it was in North Carolina. Remember it can happen to you and it happens fast so have plan and vehicle control is paramount the rest is secondary. Trunk-nTreat Article by Shelley Matthews Photos by Shelley MatthewsLonghorn PCA members made Boysville/Girlsville their Halloween destination for the fourth annual Trunk-n-Treat. Around 20 Porsches in all sizes, shapes, and colors descended upon Converse, TX to spread some joy and hand out treats to some well deserving kids. Although truth be told, the adults had just as much fun! Some people dressed up, along with their cars, to hand out goodies. Although our new President - Chris Royter and his merry band of pirates - may have been looking to see if "there were any buried treasure hidden in them thar' bags." Their efforts may have been in vain since there were several scallywags walking around with gold necklaces that may have gotten their hands on some of Captain Royter's treasure! All in all, it was a beautiful Texas fall day, sun shining, bright blue skies, and a bunch of happy people!LH ROUNDUP 25

Irene and I went to Porsche Experience Center (PEC) Atlanta to pick up our 2022 Cayman GT4 in October. We ordered the car last November and the day finally arrived. No, my car was not on the Felicity Ace that sank at sea (although some of yours were), but the ship sinking did delay my vehicle. I know if you are reading this that you have spent time on the Porsche configurator building a dream car. This was my first time doing this and then ordering a car. At first, I thought about shark blue because paint to sample (PTS) allocations were difficult to get. However, at the Longhorn PCA XPEL event last year, Steve W. pointed out a GT silver GT4 sitting on a lift right next to a shark blue GT4. My mind was made up on a PTS blue. The most difficult part was choosing a color, and I finally settled on Dark Sea Blue (also known as Meerblau). Let’s talk Atlanta experience center. This is another box you can check on the configurator. The car is delivered to the experience center rather than your local Porsche dealer. You then have the option to either drive the car home from there, or have it shipped home (at your own cost — well all of it is at your own cost). Like every good car guy I watched you tube videos about the Porsche Atlanta Experience Center Delivery. This helped me decide on a morning delivery so that we could have lunch and then hit the road in the afternoon. We were greeted by the friendly staff at PEC Atlanta and they took our bags for us as we had flown in the night prior. We were given a tour of their museum and facilities which included an exhibit on the celebration of colors from Porsche. All kinds of PTS colors and cars were on display. They have a Porsche classic restoration shop there that they are currently expanding from 3 lifts to 15 lifts. The facility is phenomenal. Then the official delivery of vehicle in the show room under cover happens. It felt exactly as you would expect and it made great pictures as you could guess. The next phase is 90 minutes of instruction on their track in an equally spec’d car (not your own car). This included the 1 mile handling circuit, kick plate, low-friction handling circuit, low-friction circle, and their high-speed dynamics area. The GT4 handles as you would expect, and having an outstanding instructor in Ross was great. The autocross guy in me even enjoyed the coned slalom course. As part of the experience if you take morning delivery you are treated to lunch in Restaurant 356. This is a great restaurant and if you are in the area, definitely eat here and enjoy the Porsche museum and shop. Lunch concluded our experience, we then drove up to Murphy, North Carolina where we spent the night. This was important as it left us about 30 minutes from Tail of the Dragon the next morning. The next day we drove the roads that everyone talks about — Tail of the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, Moonshiner 28, Six-Gap, and many others. All of these roads are great and to make it more special, the maple leaves were changing colors. This would not have happened without the delay in shipment. We put 1,500 miles on the car driving it home and kept it under the recommended 4,500 RPM the entire time. I will admit this was hard to do. The break-in period per the manual is 2,000 miles — although 2,000 miles is highly debated on the forums. As a side note, not having bucket seats and opting for 18 ways was the right call. If you would like to know more about the experience center, please talk to Irene and I and we will gladly talk more details about it all. Is new car delivery at Porsche Experience Center Atlanta worth it? Absolutely.Dorsey's Porsche Experience Center EncounterArticle and photos by Bill DorseyLH ROUNDUP 27
