Program Notes - Northern Harmonies Edvard Grieg (1843-1907): From Holberg's Time, Op. 40 Grieg's From Holberg s Time is a suite for string orchestra composed in 1884 to celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg. Grieg was inspired by the dance forms of the Baroque era and crafted this five-movement suite in the style of Holberg's time, yet imbued with Grieg's signature Norwegian folk influences. The suite offers a delightful blend of elegance, charm, and nostalgia, providing a window into both Baroque and Scandinavian musical traditions. Jean Sibelius (1865--1957): Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 Sibelius' Violin Concerto is one of the most cherished works in the violin repertoire. Written in 1903, it is filled with the dramatic intensity and haunting beauty that characterize much of Sibelius' music. The concerto opens with a serene, ethereal melody before building to moments of breathtaking virtuosity, showcasing the violin in all its lyrical and technical capabilities. The final movement, often likened to a "polonaise for polar bears," bursts with rhythmic energy and Passion. Johan Svendsen (1840-1911): Symphony No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 15 Svendsen, a leading figure in Norwegian music during the late 19th century, composed his Symphony No. 2 in 1876. Known for its sweeping melodies and orchestral color, the symphony reflects Svendsen's mastery in blending lyrical themes with grandeur and joy. The second symphony contrasts light-heartedness with moments of deep emotion, painting a vivid picture of the Nordic landscape. Although Svendsen's career was overshadowed by that of his contemporary Grieg, this work stands as a testament to his talent and contributes to the rich tapestry of Scandinavian symphonic music. The Adelph Orchestra is celebrating its 71st anniversary as a prominent professional orchestra that specializes in symphonic, chamber, operatic, and dance performances.
