OUR FOUNDER E Clement Bethel E dward Clement Bethel pianist composer choral director founded the Nassau Music Society Bethel was a devoted patron of the arts whose efforts did much to advocate and promote Bahamian music and culture He was born on February 11 1938 was educated at public schools in Nassau and graduated from Government High School He went on to pursue advanced degrees at the Royal School of Music London and the Institute of Education of London University He later earned a Master s in Ethnomusicology at the University of California Los Angeles research that confirmed his belief that Bahamian music and its unique manifestation in Junkanoo were subjects worthy of serious scholarly study Bethel s professional career at home spanned some twenty six years serving at all levels of the government education system from teacher to Deputy Head followed by posts within the government at the Ministry of Education and Culture He ultimately became the first Director of Culture in the new nation of The Bahamas He was instrumental in the direction of landmark cultural occasions of national importance such as the Independence Pageant in 1973 the first cultural event of an independent Bahamas and the visit of Her Majesty the Queen for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 1985 Bethel s impact on Bahamian culture is still visible He assumed direction of the Nassau Renaissance Singers in 1965 and served as the choir s conductor until his death in 1987 He founded The Bahamas Music Society in 1968 The same organization was incorporated as The Nassau Music Society in 1978 In 1968 he led a group of performing and visual artists to take part in the Cultural Olympics held in Mexico City as part of the activities associated with the Olympic Games It was for that occasion that the first version of The Legend of Sammie Swain was written as the music for a ballet Sammie Swain was later expanded into a full scale folk opera in 1983 and from that date was performed at various times and in various settings most notably before H M Queen Elizabeth II and the Commonwealth Heads of Government in 1985
2 0 1 8 2 0 1 9 S e a s o n Honorary Lifetime Members Ralph Munnings was introduced to music at the age of sixteen with a brief interlude with the clarinet before he moved on to the saxophone which he thought the more glamorous instrumental choice The budding self taught musician caught the attention of his uncle the late Freddie Munnings Sr who encouraged Ralph to join his band as an understudy This offer provided all the motivation Munnings needed to propel his musicianship to the next level He began listening to jazz records and playing at every opportunity During his stint with the band he performed for many international stars who appeared at the Cat Fiddle Night Club including Nat King Cole Dinah Washington Brook Benton Flip Wilson and Sam Dave In 1961 Munnings met the internationally acclaimed flautist Hubert Laws with whom he studied harmony and theory Fast forwarding to 1968 Munnings joined the Vince Martin Quartet at the Montagu Beach Hotel where lifelong musical friendships were forged with Denis Donaldson bass Apple Elliott piano and Bertram Lord drums In 1972 along with Donaldson and Elliott Munnings joined the Don Reagan Orchestra at Le Cabaret Theatre on Paradise Island and in 1974 he and Elliott were sought after as performers in Freeport at the El Casino Show Lounge Munnings stayed with the band for eighteen years He now performs with Vice Versa at The Blue Note Baha Mar John Berkely Taylor took his first steps as an entertainer and earned the nickname Peanuts when he was four It all started in the late 1930s when precocious little John slipped into the famous Paul Meeres Club watched Paul rehearse and then mischievously shouted I can sing and dance better than you Meeres replied OK you little Peanut show me Thus began a lifelong relationship between the veteran entertainer and the aspiring young performer By the time he was eighteen Peanuts had discovered his calling as a powerful drummer and caught the attention of George Symonette the renowned Calypsonian who also became a strong influence In the 1950s Peanuts was appointed Cultural Ambassador and travelled throughout Europe the U S A and Canada on tourism missions promoting the music and culture of The Bahamas Throughout his career Peanuts Taylor owned and operated a series of his own nightclubs the most famous being the Drumbeat which was a very popular hot spot in Nassau for thirty years Peanuts has been honored with the Laurette Merit of Honor from the National Trade Union of Cuban Culture and an Honorary Doctorate as Professor of Music from the University of Havana School of Music Havana Cuba

FEATURED NICOLE JORDAN NMS kicks off its 50th Anniversary season with the mesmerizing Nicole Jordan performing in three distinct concerts In her first appearance the versatile soprano features as a soloist at the Bahamas National Youth Choir s tribute to the life of Mr Cleophas Adderley At The Current through her own text and poetry and using a variety of music from many lands Nicole works with Bahamian pianist Dion Cunningham to tell the story of the power and influence of Oya the Orisha Goddess of the Wind In her final concert the audience will be treated to A Night at the Opera an evening of opera arias where she will be joined in parts by tenor Gary Seydell as well as choristers from the Bel Canto Singers and the Lyford Cay International School choir Accompanied on piano by Dion Cunningham ALARIC SMEETS ALEXANDER KRAFT VAN ERMEL It s movie time In November NMS partners with The Bahamas International Film Festival BIFF to present the documentary film Nostalgia The Music of Wim Statius Muller The film tells the story of Wim Statius Muller one of the Caribbean s greatest unsung pianist composers His Antillean Dances a collection of Cura ao waltzes mazurkas and tumbas stand at the pinnacle of traditional Cura aoan music The film introduces us to Statius Muller in the epilogue of his story and eager to fulfill his lifelong wish of performing Chopin s daunting Ballade in F Minor in concert Statius Muller must decide whether time has robbed him of his dreams or if he has one final chance to shine Film Director Alaric Smeets will introduce the film along with Alexander Kraft Van Ermel Statius Muller s grandson and the world s most renowned interpreter of this body of music On Sunday Alexander Kraft Van Ermel will perform selections of his grandfather s music as well as the music that inspired it Featured will be the Antillean Dances as well as the music of Chopin whose harmonies and melodies can be heard through Statius Muller s compositions Don t miss this unique opportunity to explore this little known but charming and elegant body of original music from the Caribbean Lesser Antilles Our complimentary wine service will take place at the end of the performance along with a brief Meet Greet with the artists
ARTISTS DUO TURGEON Performing together for thirty years Canadian husband and wife team Duo Turgeon has lined up a concert of classical favourites Renowned for performing with technical virtuosity the Duo will enthrall with twenty fingers united in perfect synchronicity on one piano Come out for a spectacular evening of classical music performed with hypnotic intensity by one of the top piano duos of our time During their stay and as part of NMS commitment to Education and Outreach Duo Turgeon will also perform a Classical Sonic Safari featuring Saint Saens Carnival of the Animals for 350 primary school children ROWLAND SUTHERLAND Flautist composer arranger bandleader and educator Rowland Sutherland is our featured artist in February At the Current he takes the stage alongside some of our very own jazz giants to present the vibrant colourful sounds of the flute in a jazz setting with various influences from around the globe Enjoy this diverse and eclectic evening curated to demonstrate the flute s contrasting soundworlds from fantasy through to its dance like radiance At St Paul s enjoy a performance of rare lyrical and modern classical pieces for flute and piano and various flute ensembles The programme includes pieces with musical influences from jazz the Americas the Caribbean and Asia as well as a number of evocative compositions by Sutherland himself JACQUI NAYLOR ART KHU Don t miss soulful jazz vocalist Jacqui Naylor and pianist Arthur Khu in their two concerts in March Expect to hear refreshing arrangements of jazz standards intimate renditions of pop covers and the duo s own original music for which they are equally well known At the Sunday concert in the gardens of The Bahamas National Trust Retreat the duo performs with a Bahamian rhythm section With ten albums and an eleventh on the way audiences will be treated to new music jazz standards originals and covers Expect also to hear examples of Naylor and Khu s signature arranging technique acoustic mashing where Naylor sings a jazz tune over a well known rock groove or vice versa
