THE OLLIE MODELWHAT IS OUR WHYOverview of UK Mental Health ProvisionUK mental health provision is stretched beyond capacity. Waiting lists for referralsacross the UK average between 12 weeks to six months, and sometimes even longer. This has led to increasing frustration, causing individuals to turn to their GPs for helpwith stress, anxiety, and lifestyle changes to improve their health. However, GPs areoverwhelmed, even without the influx of mental health patients.Current StatisticsCurrent statistics indicate that 40% of GP appointments now involve mental healthissues. The solution to supporting these individuals is not merely investing moremoney into a struggling system and methodology but looking towards innovation, intervention, and education.Innovative ModelOur model is innovative in that it teaches and empowers individuals while helpingthem regain control of their emotions, rather than being controlled by them. Ourinterventions are concise, straight forward, and do not require prolonged therapyperiods.Education, Early Intervention & PreventionWe work with children and families to educate them about their mental health beforethey encounter any significant issues. We achieve this through the Ollie Model’sinteractive, simple, yet powerful medium, which demystifies their experiences andprovides them with the tools to navigate their challenges, allowing them to problemsolve by understanding and managing their emotions.Proactive and Preventative ApproachOur approach not only rescues individuals from the proverbial river more quickly andeffectively than many existing mental health interventions, but we also provideeducation to prevent them from falling into the river in the first place. And shouldthey slip, our model teaches them how to swim.Trial Results and EffectivenessOur trial in Coventry with Wood End Health Centre proved the model’s effectivenessthrough tangible results and measurables. It also served as a triage for individualswho historically sought a GP appointment when what they actually needed was notnecessarily a GP or mental health therapy, but a redirection to other services toaddress the underlying causes of their anxieties. This strategy helps unblock GP listsand, ensures patients receive the support they truly need—all at a fraction of thecost of current mental health provision.Reference: Mental health and primary care networks Understanding the opportunities July 2020 Page 2
WHY OLLIE ?There are currentlyapproximately 14 millionyoung people under 18 in theUK.20% of those are receivingmental health support. 50% of these establish amental health problem beforethey are 14. The average cost perindividual is £59,000.Currently, support is onlyavailable once a mental healthissue has been diagnosed. On average, that support canrequire you to be on a waitinglist for up to 6 months.Treatment time is an averageof 12 to 16 months. 40% of GP appointments nowinvolve mental health issues..The solution isn't justinvesting more money into astruggling system, butfocusing on innovation, intervention, and education. The re-referral rate iscurrently running at 40%. 55,000 children under the ageof 18 are on antidepressantsfollowing mental healthintervention. This number isrising at a rate of 12% a year. All behaviours areemotionally driven. Justdealing with thebehaviour is equivalentto chopping the head offa weed. Our model goes to theroot, the emotionaldriver. By doing so, our re-referral rates areminimal. Our clients are intherapy for 6 to 12weeks – not 12 to 16months.The average cost perclient is £1,000, not£59,000.By delivering ourEmotional Resilienceprogrammes to childrenas young as 7, we arehelping to prevent thesechildren fromdeveloping mentalhealth issues.References: i. The service provided by the Ollie coach team isparticularly timely, given the current wait times forservices, especially mental health services within theNHS. I collaborated with them on a Pilot Child MentalHealth project for my current Primary Care Network(PCN) in my role as a fellowship GP. The pilot wassuccessful, with measurable improvements observed inthe predefined objectives. The coaches demonstratedexceptional efficiency and effectiveness in their work. Wecontinue to receive positive testimonials from patientswho benefited from the clinic. Our patients reportedfeeling heard and appreciated the convenience ofattending their appointments locally. This accessibilitygave them confidence that their surgery is developingprogressive services to meet their needs. Additionally, the coaches are highly skilled in addressing common low-level mental health issues presented in primary care, aswell as in directing individuals without clear mentalhealth issues to appropriate resources. They can tailortheir services to meet specific needs and, for example, collaborate with social prescribers to achieve optimalpatient outcomes. Finally, while working with them I gotto see how passionate they are about the children andtheir mental health as this motivated them to get the bestout of the service we designed as well as navigate throughroadblocks and challenges faced during the pilot.
