Class trips at NGFS are no ordinary field trips.Beginning in third grade, students take fall and springovernight trips that immerse them in a world outside theircomfort zones. Children are challenged to apply life skillsin a variety of situations: learning how to set up a tent, camping in the woods, rock climbing, hiking, comforting ahomesick classmate, navigating a ropes course, and mostof all, how to interact with their teachers and peers in anew and challenging environment. It is through theseexperiences that students become aware of theirobligations as compassionate friends and responsiblelocal and global citizens.
This year, students traveled to:Augusta, GABlack Mountain, NCCharleston, SCColumbia, SCNantahala Outdoor CenterOak Island, NCPhiladelphia, PAWilmington, NCand many local spots for day trips!“NGFS trips are amazing. We gain a deeperunderstanding of topicslearned in the classroom whilebuilding community withteachers and classmates.”Andrew Miller, Middle School Student

A Letter From Our HeadAt the beginning of each year, all New Garden Friends School students spend a few weeks collaborating to develop theguidelines their class will live by for the school year. This process profoundly affects how our students begin their timewith us; it is at the core of how we help them learn about the notion of community and what it means to takeresponsibility for our contribution to community life. Ideas are solicited from all students, from our small friends to ourhigh school students. Their thoughts are captured and then considered by the group. For many students (particularlythose who join us from other schools), this undertaking turns their concept of school on its head; they begin toappreciate what it means to be in an environment that prioritizes respect for all and appreciates that each of us hasgifts to offer. Before final guidelines are agreed upon, each student will know their voice and perspective matter atNew Garden Friends School. Later, in academic classes, athletic and artistic endeavors, on trips, and during service, they will be encouraged to honetheir listening skills and cultivate a mindset that leaves open the possibility that there are other valuable perspectives, habits of living, and beliefs. As they come to appreciate the interdependence, joy, and challenges of community life, they will learn to collaborate and communicate with care, courage, and empathy.Educating students in this way is a grand honor and a heartfelt responsibility. Those of us who devote ourselves to itwouldn’t have it any other way. Without the generous support of families and individuals, we couldn’t make ithappen. The legacy of our founders compels us to make it possible for all of our students to pursue the seriousscholarship, vibrant co-curricular athletic and artistic experiences, engaging trips, on-site learning support, andvaried service opportunities that characterize the long-held standards of extraordinary, independent Friends schools. Thank you for all you do to help ensure that each student in our care has the opportunity to learn the skills, discipline, and habits of heart and mind to become a thoughtful, contributing citizen. The unique and meaningful experiences studentsenjoy at at New Garden Friends School would notbe possible without the support of donors. Ourdonors generously give of their time, talent, andtreasures to make our vision of a just andcompassionate world possible. This year we set a lofty goal of $200,000 for The Fund for Friends. This goal encompassed theneed to provide yearly support, while alsopurchasing a new bus. Our buses get used eachweek for service learning, field trips, athletics, overnight trips, and so much more. This new bus will help our students expand theirperspectives, challenge themselves, and becomeengaged citizens in our community. This purchasewas made possible by the generous donation of Donna and Bob Newton.Donna and Bob are current great-grandparentsand former Trustees. We are immensely gratefulfor all they have given to our school. Theircommitment to supporting NGFS continues tomake education in and beyond the classroom possible. “New Garden Friends School is a community treasurethat welcomes diversity in all of its dimensions and is ahallmark in battling bias, bigotry, and racism.
