Q Members, we need your help! Two Q Club members, Caroline Mann & Susan Cox, are searching for more examples of Alcide Chaumeil "CA" faïence. The two are collaborating on producing an updated catalog of the 1900's Paris-based faïencerie, originally compiled by dear former member, Millicent Mali. They have been collecting CA forms and gathering information for almost 18 years, but they know there are many more fabulous forms to discover! If you have any CA pieces, please look at the base of each piece and if there is a number, please jot it down. Please send the list of the numbers you've found to: Susan Cox sdctexas@yahoo.com OR Caroline Mann cmannesq@gmail.com If any form numbers you send are not already on their list, they will be in touch and request a good photo(s) of the piece(s), its mark, and its approximate height. Any submissions will be given credit in the booklet. Mille mercis for your help! Caroline & Susan
May 2024 Newsletter Just to bring you up to date after our QCI Annual meeting in April. We had a great get-together in Bellingham, WA that included a tour of the Tulip Festival in La Connor, WA, a visit to the home of Caroline Mann in Everett, and a group dinner in Everett. The formal meeting occurred on April 18, 2024, at the Holiday Inn in Bellingham. Please check the website soon for detailed minutes of the meeting and changes to the board. Although we were not a large group, everyone thoroughly enjoyed visiting with other members in person and we were also pleased to meet new attendees from California (Carol Little and her sister Christine Cooney). As a reminder to 2023 members, you will need to renew your membership by the end of this month if you want to continue having access to newsletters and the journal on the website. You can use Paypal (qcitreas@gmail.com) or send a check to the club c/o of Sharon Lohnes. All of this information is on the QCI website www.quimperclub.org . (Please note that Sharon has resigned, and we will be changing the contact information for membership soon). On a sad note, we would like to share the news that long-time member Trudi Epstein passed away on April 30th. Her obituary is attached to this letter. Also, belatedly, please open the attached link to the obituary for May Frances Ramsey, who passed away in December 2023. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/pilotonline/name/may-ramsey-obituary?id=53901117 https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/name/gertrude-epstein-obituary?pid=206859948 If you have received this message twice, I apologize, as I am still sending it to 2023, as well as 2024 members. This is a direct link to the upcoming exclusive sale of another portion of Beverly Sherman's faience collection. Beverly, who passed away in January of this year, was an avid collector and had many lovely pieces. https://www.liveauctioneers.com/catalog/323675_ceramics-property-of-floyd-and-beverly-sherman/ On another note, new board members for Quimper Club International are needed as soon as possible. The current group of workers has been in place since 2015. This was brought forward at the last in-person meeting in 2019 (Philadelphia) and needs to be re-addressed immediately. The original rules stated two or three-year terms, not ten! If no one is interested in doing volunteer work for the organization, then the Qclub should investigate the legalities of how to shut down. We will discuss this at the Annual Meeting in Bellingham, WA on April 18th. Patricia Hull President, Quimper Club International
February 23, 2024 QCI News The Dallas Auction Gallery is putting Quimper and other French faience on the auction block. Lot numbers 59, 60, 62, 63, 64, 65, 69, and 70 are faience, and several pieces are Porquier-Beau. More may be listed by the auction house in the near future. These are all from an avid collector who was a long-standing member of Quimper Club International. The link below is a search for Quimper. The auction takes place on March 5, 2024. https://www.liveauctioneers.com/search/?keyword=quimper&pageSize=48&sort=-relevance&status=online Meeting News We are now less than 2 months away from our Annual Meeting. This meeting represents the 25th anniversary of the club's formation and we would love to see you there. Please note that the meeting includes a buffet lunch at the Holiday Inn in Bellingham, WA. Each attendee will be asked to pay for lunch and the club will cover the cost of the meeting and saleroom. Speaking of saleroom, yes, there will be items for sale. If you would like to have a table to show your own items for sale as well, please let us know, so arrangements can be made. Some members have inquired if there will be other collections to see and there are three homes in Point Roberts, WA, and Tsawwassen, BC that
will be open for your visit. If you would like to come, we would appreciate it if you let us know ahead of time when you plan to visit. Times available: Monday, April 15 - before the meeting, you will be able to visit the homes of all three – Lucy Williams and Bev and Andy Mar in Point Roberts, WA, and Pat and Colin Hull in Tsawwassen, BC. Post-meeting visits on April 20 or 21 to Lucy Williams and Pat and Colin Hull only. All three of these homes require you to cross the border into Canada, so you will need your passport. If you require accommodations, we suggest the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. Please make reservations as soon as possible at https://www.coasthotels.com/coast-tsawwassen-inn. This hotel is only a few minutes walk from Pat and Colin’s or a 10-minute drive from Point Roberts. (or slightly longer depending on border wait time). Dr. Charles Richard (Dick) Williams (1933-2023) passed away in the early morning hours on Dec. 30th. He is now at peace. Dick was a musician in the US Navy, serving on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean during the Korean War, and playing in the parade in Washington D.C. for President Eisenhower’s inauguration in 1953 (where according to him, he learned to avoid walking behind the elephants). After leaving the Navy, Dick returned to university studies where he received a BS in chemistry and master’s and PhD degrees in mathematics. He taught math for 20 years at Midwestern State University in Texas and computer science for 20 years at California State University Dominguez Hills. Besides serving as president of the CSU Senate, he served on the statewide committee that was instrumental in establishing California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo. Dick was an accomplished musician and clarinetist so after retiring to Point Roberts to be close to the family, he found groups to join: A Little Night Music Orchestra, The Delta Music Makers, The Delta Concert Band, and the Royal City Concert Band. Dick was a member of the Point Roberts Winds which he and Lucy founded. He also played for the Sunday services for many years at Trinity Lutheran Church. He never wanted to give up the clarinet but finally retired from playing altogether at age 86 after 78 years. After moving to Point Roberts, the Downtown Wacky Walkers welcomed him wholeheartedly and supplied him with dozens of friends, good walks & talks, and more than a dozen years of fun memories. The Friday afternoon bridge games with Curt Bush, Sally Roberts and her son, Len were a highlight. Dick volunteered for several years for the Point Roberts Food Bank, was a member of the TOOBS (Tsawwassen Order of Old Bastards), and was proud to have served on the Whatcom County Hospital District Board Dick was a lifelong learner. He was genuinely curious about the world and all of its inhabitants. That curiosity translated into an openness towards people and situations. He was a kind, caring, generous and loving member of our family and of any community in which he took part. One of the last things he shared was his belief that liking someone was a choice, so why not choose to like them? I don’t think I know of anyone who didn’t like him.
Dick is survived by Lucy, his wife of 41 years, son David Williams, daughter Kelly Williams, and daughter Valerie Woodard, as well as grandchildren, Dr. Spencer Williams, Lucien Williams, Miles Williams, and Boone Williams. In lieu of cards or flowers, a donation can be given in Dick's memory to the Trinity Church’s building fund. The 100+-year-old church in Point Roberts needs some serious foundation work and repairs. Canadian checks can be made out to Daily Bread for a Canadian tax receipt. Trinity Lutheran Church, Box 437, Point Roberts, WA 98281

February 2 2023 Susan Cox came across this blog and asked to share it with all the members Bonjour Paris BLOG article about Crepes and La Chandeleur 23 January 2014 by Sue Aran La Chandeleur F tes de la Lumi re Jour des Cr pes or French Candlemas is observed on February 2nd Februare means purification in Latin hence this Catholic holiday occurring 40 days after Christmas was designed to glorify and celebrate the purification of the Virgin Mary Most likely Candlemas was Celtic in origin The Celts honored their goddess Brigit keeper of the perpetual sacred flame with a feast at midnight however they celebrated the purification and fertility of the land after winter On January 24th peasants carrying torches roamed the fields praying the goddess would cleanse their land before sowing The bear ending his hibernation was one of their symbols Men in bear skins would come out of the forest and abduct young girls in what was most likely a very primitive animistic orgiastic ritual In an effort to end pagan worship Pope Gelasius in the year 492 changed the festival date to February 2nd and changed flaming torches to burning candles In the 12th century buckwheat was introduced into France by Crusaders returning from Asia They brought back the triangular seeds of the plant which had been cultivated in the Yunnan province of China since 6000 BCE because they learned it was easy to grow in difficult conditions Although classified as a cereal buckwheat is not a grass It belongs to the same genus as rhubarb and sorrel Since wheat was initially reserved for the wealthy buckwheat became popular with average citizens Excess buckwheat flour was used to make cr pes which symbolized prosperity Buckwheat cr pes remain a specialty in Brittany where the cr pe was invented During the Middle Ages the Catholic church superimposed the sacred functions of the Celtic goddess Brigit onto St Brigid who coincidentally was a Druid by
birth At an early age Brigid decided to convert and become a Catholic nun She started a nunnery at Kildare a pagan shrine again coincidentally with an eternal flame During the late 17th century reign of Louis XIII and the introduction of the Louis d or coin it was just a short leap for the round shape and the golden color of buttery cr pes to become synonymous with the golden orb of the sun wealth and again prosperity In fact it has become a tradition while making cr pes to hold a coin in one hand and a cr pe pan in the other while flipping the cr pe in the air If you manage to catch the cr pe in the pan your family will be prosperous until the same time next year and if not well maybe that s why the French eat a lot of cr pes In the United States Germans arriving in Pennsylvania in the mid 1800s who traditionally predicted the onset of spring by the appearance of the hedgehog soon discovered there were no hedgehogs in Pennsylvania They fortuitously adopted the indigenous woodchuck or groundhog as their weather vane This hearkened back to the lore of the Celts and Candlemas came full circle like the cr pe Hope you enjoyed this Did the groundhog see his shadow at your place Patricia Hull President Quimper Club International

Curator's Choice – Seiz Breur Will Fox, one of our members has provided the following link for members to view and listen to. This is about an hour in length and well worth the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSte_vFsYeE Lea Nickless of the Wolfsonian, highlights the 20th-century Celto-Breton autonomist movement. Celebrating Breton culture, Seiz Breur brought together artists, designers, architects, and writers to create new work that embraced indigenous language, costumes, and crafts. Lea reviews her selections from The Wolfsonian's significant holdings of Seiz Breur furniture, ceramics, drawings, prints, and library materials—perhaps the largest collection outside of France! —to reveal modern evidence of Brittany's unique design identity. Happy New Year! Sending good wishes to everyone. May your new year be better than ever! Please watch this space for information on how to renew your membership for 2021 so we can continue to share our love of Quimper (and other) faience. Next week, you will receive another survey to choose your favorite holiday décor. All the entries are on the website www.quimperclub.org and on the Quimper Club International Facebook page. Take some time to browse through so you are ready to choose. We will announce a winner later in January for the most votes from the survey and the most reactions on Facebook (likes, loves, wows!). Lucy Williams is busy preparing another collection tour for the website and you will be notified when it is posted to the site. Be prepared to be amazed by this beautiful collection and the stories behind it. To continue the series, we would like to solicit photos of your plates, figures that relate to the Chinese Lunar Year – 2021 is Year of the Ox. This might be a challenge for you, so put on your thinking caps! Update in regards to Maurice Fouillen:
On December 21, 2020, Maurice Fouillen's funeral was held in the Saint-Corentin cathedral. There were 24 people there. Thanks to Judy Datesman., Quimper Club International gave a lovely floral composition of living plants rather than cut flowers so that it would last all winter on the grave. The Quimper pottery world was represented by Judy Datesman (and Marcel), Marc-Antoine Ruzette (and his wife), Philippe Lalys, Philippe Théallet, Antoine Lucas, and Jean-Pierre Henry. The Musée de la Faience has offered to host a get-together for his friends later this year. Friends have spoken to his family about preserving documents and other items of historical and cultural importance from his home and studio. Stay safe and healthy this winter until we can meet again.
