Peria School Monday 12 August 2024 Newsletter
Kia ora ē te whānau, It has been a very busy start to the term and we welcome some new students to our kura including Aroha, Ash, Paki and Myah. We also welcome SJ, who is not so new to our whānau but is new to her role as Kaiawhina (Teacher aide) in Te Puna this term. We know that our students, staff and whānau will make these students and our new families feel very welcome. The 12th of July marked the 25th year of Claire being at Peria School. To celebrate we held our monthly cake day with the staff and enjoyed some yummy kai and also Claire received the gift of one of our artworks that has been at our school for a very long time. We appreciate all that Claire has done to serve our school, our students and our community and we look forward to many more years to come of Claire working at our School. Cake Day is also a time when we celebrate any other achievements and birthdays amongst staff. In this photo you will see Claire and Gavin cutting our cake that was made with love by Steph. Our teachers continue to take part in Maths Professional development and we appreciate your patience as we take the time to learn all there is to know about Maths from the experts. We prefer to learn altogether and that is why at times you may notice all the teachers out. In the long run this benefits everyone as we learn how to teach in a way that ensures a world class maths education for your children. As part of this we have been learning about what makes a Mathematician, which we want all students to see themselves as, so they can grow a love for Maths. This is so important as often it's a child's belief about their Maths ability that hinders their progress or makes them not enjoy Maths. So our goal is to create an environment where students love Maths and see themselves as Mathematicians. You can encourage this at home but talking about some ways they are Mathematicians at home. See this diagram for some ideas on what you can talk about with them. The Minister of Education has announced changes to the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum and as a staff we are happy with our progress in this area as we are already taking action and have been for a long time in some of these areas including the introduction and focus on Structured Literacy in our juniors and now across the school. We also think our current Maths professional development will help us stay abreast of the latest Maths teaching and learning programmes that will ensure improved outcomes for all of our students. Our current Midyear data shows that 74% of students are working at or beyond the New Curriculum level for their age in Reading, 70% working at or above in Writing and 70% working at or beyond in Maths. Our goal is to continue to improve upon these percentages by the end of the year. We have many students on individual education programmes and we aim to ensure that these students have support in place so they can make progress towards their goals and feel confident and successful in their learning too. We will have a whānau hui this term where we can share more about all that is happening in this space. Last but not least we welcome Mark Kerr-Bell as the newest member of our Peria School Board of Trustees. He has a lot of experience in the building world and we definitely appreciate that expertise as we look to build our two new classrooms over the coming months. Take care whānau and enjoy the rest of your week. Ngā mihi, Whaea Ari. Peria School

Peria School Practise Cross Country On Wednesday 14th August at 9am, Peria School will practise for the Eastern Zone Cross Country. Each age group will have the opportunity to run the distance they will be participating in on the following Tuesday. Students will need to bring suitable clothes to run in (t-shirt and shorts) and a change of clothes in a plastic bag for after the race. The oldest age group will start first at around 9.15, followed by the next age groups. Whaea Jo Eastern Zone Cross Country: Tuesday 20th August 2024 Far North Inter Zone Cross Country: Friday 23rd August 2024 Dear Parents and Caregivers Our students are starting to train for the above upcoming Cross Country meets. Both of these sporting events are being hosted by Peria School, with postponement dates of Wednesday 21st August 2024 and Monday 26th August 2024 respectively. As hosts we have a great opportunity to showcase our school, and to raise funds for the school. It also gives us the added advantage of not having to travel to the events. The funds we raise go towards helping to pay for student’s stationery, the whole school camp, enhancing our gardens etc. also if you have any other ideas for the money raised from this fundraising please get in contact with us, it’s good to get fresh input. Please keep these dates free as we are seeking assistance from all parents/caregivers, to help out with activities on the day and/or provide donations of home baking for the cake stall. We know this is a big ask but we are going to need as many parents and as much baking as we can for both these events please. We need helpers from early in the morning to set up the stalls, prepare food, sell food and marshals on the course. If you are able to help with any of these tasks please fill in the form attached and return it to school by Wednesday 7th August as I need to get a roster/shopping list organised as soon as possible. If you are in a food stall and have a child who is running on the day, you won’t miss out on watching their race as we will get someone to cover for you. I will try and put you at the job where you request, but sometimes we are short in other areas and I may need to move you but I will try and check with you first. If we can get as many parents/caregivers as possible helping out, it will lighten the load for everyone and make for a great day. Eastern Zones - Time Table All students are to run in AGE GROUPS based on AGE as at 1st JANUARY 2024 The following are approximate times only and parents should be advised to be there early to avoid missing their child’s race. Kia ora e te whānau, Te Puna has been busy learning about grouping in maths. Grouping is another word for multiplication. We have learnt how to skip count in 2s, 5s and 10s so far. We can use skip counting help us work out maths questions that focus on grouping. E.g. If I had 5 packets of peaches, and there were 2 in each packet, how many would I have altogether? This can be solved by skip counting in 2s 5 times: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. There are 10 peaches altogether. We have also been busy learning about domesticated and wild plants. We found out that 200,000 years ago people from Mesopotamia learnt how to farm plants and domesticate them. People collected and planted the best seeds of wild plants. Each year people collected the best seeds that were better tasting, produced more food or were easier to grow. Eventually wild plants changed to the domesticated plants we eat today. Nga mihi, Whaea Dominique Te Puna
Kia ora e te whānau, As Term 3 gets underway, I’d like to welcome back some past students and a brand new student to our class. Storm, Kiia and Fern have returned to Peria, and are settling in quickly. Welcome back. Ash is our new student. So welcome Ash, and we look forward to getting to know you and including you in our school whanau. I hope you have been enjoying following the Olympics in Paris. It’s amazing to see the variety of sports, both individual and team. I can’t imagine the amount of training these athletes have put in to get to the level they are. It reminds me that goal setting and perseverance really do pay off. Homework packs came home in Week 2. Just a reminder that spelling and maths basic facts will be tested on Thursdays. Students replace their 2 readers and library books and take their packs home for the next week. Please help your child to remember to return the homework pack before Thursday each week. This term, we are going to focus on times tables for maths. For spelling there are words from the spelling rule we are learning that week. As well, there is a laminated card of the heart words your child is still learning. I will be testing a random selection of these words each week, so keep practising these tricky words. They are called heart words because you just have to learn them by heart. They don’t follow the usual phonic patterns. In Writing we are focusing on extending sentences. We can extend sentences with the conjunctions - because, but and so, and now we are learning to include a phrase to explain the subject of our sentence. So now instead of writing “Whaea Ari came into our class.”, we are getting sentences like “Whaea Ari, the principal of our school, came into our class because she wanted to see us working on our maths.” Wow, we are becoming awesome writers! Don’t forget, it’s almost Cross Country. We are training a bit each day, but feel free to do some more at home. The more training you do the better you will be. And below you can see some awesome mahi on solving multiplication or division word problems. Regards Whaea Jo Te awa
Te moana
Kia ora friends and whanau,In Te Moana we have been all about fractions in math. At the end of last week we were exploring bothindividually and as a class Equivalent Fractions. This is when two different fractions are actually the samevalue. We have been moving through our learning journey using concrete (hands on) pictorial (drawing andlooking at pictures) and abstract (numbers) methods of learning. I have seen that our students using theseways of learning have been understanding the concepts much easier.Last week Te Moana presented their speeches to the class. I was so proud of the tamariki as they all got upand gave their speech to the class, this is such a massive achievement for some students. For the last few weeks we have been spending our mornings building our fitness in preparation for CrossCountry coming up. Challenging themselves to push through when they feel tired, doing an extra lap evenwhen they really want to stop and speeding up to a sprint at the end are all techniques that I hope will servethem well in the event itself.
As long as you are doing your best, you’re doing great! Whaea Beks
Circability Te Rangi has had an excellent start to the term. We have been diligently following our engaging classroom routines and have been thrilled to participate in a variety of hands-on activities organised by Circability. These activities are designed to encourage creative thinking and problem-solving through play. Cook Island Language Week Additionally, we celebrated Cook Island Language Week by learning the Cook Island welcome song in both Cook Island reo Maori and sign language. Our class has also been training daily in preparation for the upcoming cross country event. Te Rangi Students Shine in Persuasive Texts and Speeches This term, Te Rangi students have been diving into persuasive texts, focusing on crafting compelling arguments. As part of this learning journey, they are now transitioning into the oral delivery of their work by creating speeches to present in class. A select few students will have the opportunity to share their speeches with the entire school and potentially qualify to compete in the Manu Kōrero speech competition, held at the Te Ahu Centre in Kaitaia. The students in Te Rangi have put in an incredible effort, with many working on their speeches during the school holidays and for homework. Thank you to the whānau who have supported them in this. Your encouragement and involvement are greatly appreciated! Te RANGI
In Makerspace we have been scrubbing up on our Digital Skills! We're using our chromebooks to find images and learning processes to bring pictures together to become graphics that ‘talk’. So students have been learning a mix of drafting processes and this week are starting to press some of the finished designs onto our T’shirts :) Makerspace
Hi Everyone, and welcome back to the 3rd week of music! We, Jen and Jane are very happy to be back doing singing and instruments with you all again. We take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Whakaaro Tahi Community Trust through Sharyn Van Heerden for ongoing support with tutors, instruments and the music programme here. Hoping to catch up with parents and caregivers as we navigate this term. Regards Jen & Jane Music
