Kia ora Whānau, What a wonderful week we have had with so many visitors and exciting things taking place. We had the wonderful team from ‘Think and Be Me’ and the ‘Feeling for life - Tractor Trek’ come in to promote mental wellness with our students and staff. For our students this looks like being able to use resources to identify their emotions, being able to describe how they feel and know strategies for helping themselves to build emotional resilience. These are all really important concepts not just for our students but also for ourselves as adults. Our senior block build is coming along great as you can see in this photo below, we have walls up. We are aiming for this block to be finished a couple of weeks into Term 2. Te Rangi and Te Moana will move into those classrooms as soon as they are done. We will be demolishing the old Te Moana classroom around Easter. You may think ‘what a waste of a class’ but unfortunately that is the way that it all works. We are not allowed to keep any of the old classrooms. ATTENDANCE MATTERS Regular school attendance is essential for your child's success. When students attend school consistently, they are more likely to excel academically, develop strong social connections, and establish positive routines that benefit their overall well-being. On the other hand, frequent absences and lateness can lead to learning gaps, lower achievement, and disengagement from school. This year, our school has set a goal for 70% of our students to attend school regularly, which means being at school at least 90% of the time. In Term 4 of 2024 we had on average less than 30% of students attending regularly (at least 90% of the time) so we know we have a goal ahead that we will not reach without whānau support. We also want to improve punctuality, aiming to increase the number of students arriving on time from 53% in Term 4 2024 to 75% by the end of Term 4 2025. Achieving this will require a strong partnership between home and school. We need your support to ensure tamariki arrive on time, ready to learn each day. To celebrate everyone's efforts, we will be holding an Attendance Celebration Pool Party this Friday to acknowledge all students for trying their best to be at school every day and on time so far this year. Let's work together to make 2025 a year of great attendance and learning! We will be implementing an Attendance strategy with support from feedback from various stakeholders and also from your children who have ideas. We will share this with whānau, so we are all on the same page. We really encourage and welcome some strategies or thoughts on how we can do this together and what might be some barriers we need to be mindful of, you can send these to me at principal@peria.school.nz Ngā mihi nui, Whaea Ari Peria School Principal’s korero

Tēnā Koutou e te whanau, Te Puna is in the swing of our routines and our days are flowing by super-fast. We are about to start sending home book bags with our learning goals for Literacy and Numeracy and reading books. Please make sure that you return these each day so that, as our goals change, the notebooks can be updated. We have been super spoiled here at Peria School and were donated class sets of drink bottles! Te Puna is loving their new drink bottles and for our youngest learners they have fast become a name identification learning tool. This means that you no longer need to send drink bottles to school with your child, and because we are a health promoting school, water is our preferred drink for our tamariki. So, I ask that other drinks (juice and flavoured milks) are kept for home and not brought to school. As part of our “Kia Kaha, Kia Māia, Kia Manawanui!" (Be strong, be brave, be determined!) kaupapa, Te Puna have made ‘Positive Thinking Pōtae with messages to push ourselves forward when faced with a challenge. Te Puna spent some time during fitness with Te Rangi learning Rippa Rugby ball skills. This was such a success; we will definitely be doing more of this. Te Puna The tractors and Cool Cat show was a big hit for Te Puna students. We just loved it!

Kia ora e te whaanau. What an incredibly busy and fun filled time we have been having as a school and as Te Awa. During this time, we have also welcomed a new student to our classroom. Great to have Wiremu and his whaanau join us at Peria School. Here are some of our learning highlights. Courage in Mind, Courage in Body Capturing an action to show courage. Come see our class displays! We’ve also been working hard to set up our classroom routines. We are now ready to start sending our book bags home with our reading books and other practice activities. Please remember to have your child read with someone at home every night, sign their reading log and have them return the book bag every day. Ngaa mihi Whaea Lisa Te awa

Think and Be Me - Be a Cool Cat We had so much fun watching the show about Lexi and her emotions. The acting was awesome! Then we got to go and have a turn on all the tractors. Here are some pictures of us having a blast with our visitors. Learning about Whakamanawanui This term we are learning about courage and pushing ourselves. Ask your tamariki about Kia Maia Challenge Day. While we use sports and fitness as opportunities to practice using courage and resilience, we also learn about it by looking at other role models and their unique stories. This week Te Moana learnt about Jessica Watson and Jordy the 12-year-old surfer. Here are some of our tamariki with their Te Whare Tapa Wha models of well-being. Te Moana

Te Rangi students had the privilege of taking part in the pōwhiri for Pamapuria School at Kauhanga Marae. A special acknowledgement to our senior boys—Noah, Nikau, Soul, Paki, Kyle (Te Moana students), Lennox, and Layne—who confidently stepped up to deliver the mihi. This is no easy task, and we are incredibly proud of how they represented our school with mana and confidence. Each week, our senior students travel to Kaitaia Intermediate to take part in Technology classes, where they get hands-on experience in subjects such as Food Tech, ICT - Coding, Woodwork, and Performing Arts. These sessions provide them with valuable practical skills while encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. In the pool, our students have been working hard in preparation for the upcoming school swimming sports on Monday, the 24th. Alongside training for competition, they have also been learning vital water safety skills, including survival strokes and strategies to stay safe in and around the water. Our class has also taken on the Kia Māia Challenges, which push students beyond their comfort zones, encouraging them to take on new experiences with courage while developing resilience through physical challenges. For our Health and P.E focus, alongside swimming, we’ve been diving into Rippa Rugby. What better way to master a game than by teaching it to others? Not only have our students been sharpening their own skills, but they’ve also stepped up as leaders, helping Te Puna learn fundamental ball skills. Recently, our students participated in the Tractors and Cool Cat event—a fun-filled day promoting positive mental health and wellbeing for our rangatahi. It was an exciting experience with plenty of laughter, learning, and community spirit. Be sure to check out our Facebook page for more photos and highlights from the day! In the classroom, we’ve been setting up our norms and routines, focusing on key skills such as working in pairs and groups, active listening, sharing ideas, critical thinking, and presenting across all areas of learning. It’s been a fantastic start to the term, and we’re excited for what’s to come! Te Rangi
