16 PERSPECTIVE MAY 2023 Jeff Flanagan CEO Bidvest Noonan GB Meet Jeff Flanagan CEO Bidvest Noonan GB An Inspiring Journey From Engineering to Industry Leadership Q Can you share your transition into our industry and provide an overview of your career path Welcome to our exclusive interview with our CEO Jeff Flanagan He has had a diverse career starting in engineering and moving into finance and facility services With a strong passion for problem solving and a relentless drive for success Jeff has become a leader in the industry Join us as we explore Jeff s journey and learn from his experiences and insights Q Were you always interested in pursuing a career in our industry A From an early age I was drawn to engineering which led me to pursue a degree in civil engineering from Imperial College London After graduating in 1982 I started my career as an engineering consultant at Rendel Palmer and Tritton During that time I gained valuable experience in site investigations for nuclear power stations and worked on the construction of a major North South Road in Wales A When I returned to the UK I continued working on mergers and acquisitions but in 1996 when I joined the Executive Group as the finance director The Executive Group was a clening and security services business based in London I am proud to say that the company experienced significant growth during my tenure and in November 2003 it was acquired by Mitie Following the acquisition I was appointed as the managing director of Mitie Security overseeing the security operations of the company and managing a team of over 11 000 officers In 2015 I joined Interserve as the Managing Director of its private sector facilities management division This role involved managing a team of 13 000 employees in the UK and Spain who delivered hard and soft services It was an opportunity for me to further contribute my expertise in the facilities management sector Q What motivated your decision to transition from the field of engineering A Although I was passionate about engineering I had a strong desire to broaden my horizons and deepen my understanding of the world and business In 1984 I decided to make a career transition and ventured into accountancy I was fortunate to join KPMG one of the world s most prestigious accounting firms The skills I had developed as an engineer such as problem solving and project management proved to be transferable After working hard for just over two years I became a qualified chartered accountant My time at KPMG provided me with invaluable knowledge and experience Notably from 1988 to 1992 I had the opportunity to work in Toronto focusing on mergers and acquisitions which had a profound impact on my professional development By the summer of 2022 Bidvest Noonan had established itself as one of the leading players in the UK and Ireland I had been aware of the business for many years and had been impressed by its reputation capability and footprint When I received an invitation to meet Chief Executive Officer Declan Doyle I was delighted The company s potential for growth and industry leadership was evident and I wanted to be a part of that The opportunity to become the CEO of such a robust and ambitious business was an honor I believed that my diverse background in engineering finance and facility services equipped me well to bring substantial value to this role Q What led to your decision to join Bidvest Noonan A The company culture and values at Bidvest Noonan resonate strongly with my own The appreciation and empowerment of employees were particularly noteworthy From my very first interactions with the team I could sense the alignment between our values The prospect of working with such a dynamic and talented team was genuinely exciting and I am delighted with my decision to join BIDVEST NOONAN 17
