Tēnā tātou katoa, Firstly, how wonderful was our Pet Day & Gala? We are so fortunate to have such an amazing community that supports us in so many ways to make these kinds of days come to life. From the variety of pets on the day, the number of pets that came was unlike any previous Pet Day I have seen, the creations and student displays that were exhibited in the classrooms, the yummy kai, the buckets up, the various rides including the Thomas train, digger rides, face painting and the beautiful singing of Kenape, some of our students and our very own kaiāwhina Whaea Brooke. Our landcare whānau that came down to share with us all that they know about the taiao (environment) and the happy smiley faces that made the day one to remember. Thank you all for your help, it was very much appreciated. We were also lucky enough to follow this up with a trip to Kupe Waka Centre in Ōkoki (Aurerē) where the students learnt about Sir Hekenukumai, how Māori navigated using a star compass and also learnt about the waka they have there. The students really enjoyed their day and feedback was that the parents learnt so much. How lucky are we to have such a resource in our very own backyard. We hope this will be the first trip of many for our students. On Friday the 22nd we will have our final overnight stay wānanga for the year at Kauhanga Marae. This will be open to all Year 1-6 students, as the Year 7 & 8’s will be returning from camp that evening, tired I might suggest. You should have a permission slip to fill out. This time around we ask that all whānau that have a student in Year 1-3 have an adult stay with them overnight. We note that many students got a little bit sad at night without their family there. We will walk down on Friday and then the wānanga will finish the following day at 1pm. We will have a pōwhiri on Friday night at 6pm followed by a hāngī so please come along if you can. Those students who will not be staying will be walked back to school on Friday to catch a bus or get picked up. Next Wednesday we have our trip to Maitai Bay. I hope you have all seen the permission slip. We look forward to our last beach day and trip before the end of the year. Please make sure they have plenty of water. It is scorching hot out there. Lastly, our Prizegiving will be at 11am on the 12th of December so please save the date. Ngā mihi, Ari. Peria School

Kia ora, In the last week of October we were busy getting ready for Pet Day by creating our pet art, watering our tomato plants and creating our sand saucers. Thanks to those of you who brought in all those flowers! Our creations all turned out stunning! The first week of November we have been busy learning about our famous New Zealanders. To start off the week we went on a field trip to the Waka Kupe Centre and learnt all about Hector Busby. We drew and wrote about how Waka were made, famous Waka, navigation and Sir Hector. We also have been learning about telling the time and how it relates to fractions and counting in 5s. Try looking at some clocks together and discussing what the time is. Warm regards, Whaea Dominique Te Puna

Kia Ora Whanau, Well for us in Te Awa it’s been an exciting couple of weeks with Pet Day, Kupe Waka Centre visit, and then some of our Year 4 students competing in the Eastern Zone Athletics at Taipa. Each of these events involved lots of participation and learning. The entries into the Pet Day exhibitions were so creative, it was interesting to see how a theme could be represented in so many ways. At the Kupe Waka Centre we were introduced to Sir Hector Busby, a legendary Maori navigator and traditional waka builder, who lived in our own backyard. What a legacy he has left us. Over the next two weeks Te Awa will be focused on assessments. As we move towards the end of 2024, it’s an opportunity to demonstrate and celebrate our learning. To balance the academic focus, we are having the opportunity to practise our swimming skills. So, please make sure your kids have their togs every day. We are lucky to have the last swimming time when it’s the hottest part of the day. Regards Whaea Jo Te Awa

Whew, that was a mammoth effort by everyone to pull off yet another remarkable Pet Day Gala!!! Nga mihi nui to those that contributed to the epicness of the day. The judges of Te Moana’s class exhibits found it extremely hard to pick one apart from another. They were blown away by the entries put forward for show. We got so many compliments on the level of creativity and the calibre of the entries. I definitely was not the only one massively impressed by their work. The tamariki worked really hard on their items both in class and at home and once I set the class up for display and stood back it hit me just how much effort was on display. I realise now I only took a video of the room and exhibits - I have managed to get some shots off it though. Some results of the day: Paki got 1st for Recycled Planter pot - his cute little Minion won the judges over with his lettuce afro! Layne Hailstone took out the Best Class Exhibit ribbon with his mounted paper mache deer skull and antlers! Elsa took 2nd Place for her farmer scarecrow. Khan placed 2nd with his living picture of a lone tree amongst nature. Waipuarangi’s giant cookie got a matching large 1st place for taste! Kaia came 2nd for her miniature house creation and also took out the Overall Effort Ribbon for not only entering almost all categories for placing across almost all entries. Mahi nui e hoa! Dallas’s dragonfly skimming the water made a 3rd place landing. Super proud of the whole class for their efforts right across the whole event! Te Moana

Te Rangi Class Update Kia ora, whānau! Te Rangi students have had an exciting and enriching few weeks! Recently, we visited the Kupe Centre as part of our Kaupapa inquiry into prominent figures in our community and the qualities that enabled them to make remarkable contributions. We were privileged to have the lovely Ricky-Lee share a powerful kōrero about her papa, Sir Hekenukumai Busby, and the incredible achievements of his life. It’s so inspiring for our tamariki to hear real-life stories from local role models, learning about their challenges, resilience, and the ways they worked to bring positive change to our communities. During our visit, students explored the whenua, learned about the special waka, navigational pou, practised tying marine knots, and we were even able to visit the nearby beach! In other news, our students put in a tremendous amount of effort preparing for our School Pet Day and Gala. Their classroom displays were spectacular, and it was wonderful to see all their hard work shine. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed from home to help make the day such a success—your support and involvement are truly appreciated. We also had a fantastic athletics day where students competed in high jump, long jump, sprints, discus, and shot-put. Their hard work and sportsmanship were fantastic to see! We’re also proud to share that many of our students qualified for the Eastern Zone athletics and will represent Peria School at the next level. Ngā mihi for your ongoing support! We’re excited for the weeks ahead as our learning continues. Ngā manaakitanga, Frances Te Rangi

Thirty two Year 4-8 students took part in the Eastern Zone Athletics Sports at Taipa on Wednesday 6th November. What a great day! The weather was just right with cloud cover and no rain, and all students participated with a huge amount of commitment and effort. We will receive the confirmed results soon by email, and students who gained 1st, 2nd or 3rd placings in their age group will be invited to compete in the Far North Event held at Kaitaia on Friday the 15th of November. But well done everyone. Not only did you compete well, you also represented our school really well with your good attitude, and behaviour. Which is just as well, as we are so easy to be seen in our awesome orange T-shirts! Whaea Jo Athletics
