Network News Coming together to share information A Note from the Editors Working together to make a difference is truly the spirit of the newly revamped Network News publication The effort to come together and share information engage students and boost communication on campus has created a new ecosystem representing many levels of collaboration and partnership The first level Our Foundation and History of Engaging Students First we must acknowledge that Bay Path has had student publications over the years thanks to Dr John Jarvis Now about 10 years since the last publication was published we will take a new twist on an old idea and present the newly revamped Network News student publication that gets us all communicating with students taking the lead The second level Partnership As we all know this journey has just begun and will continue to grow thanks to the great partnership of the Sullivan Career and Life Planning Center SCLP with Laurie Cirillo and the Undergraduate Communications Program at Bay Path including the Student Newsroom activities supported by University Communications with Professor Janine Fondon Together we are using content to find the common ground of success for students This very exciting organic process began in the fall of 2014 when Laurie Cirillo was asked to create a mentorship panel for the Women s Leadership Conference reaching out to Janine Fondon to partner with her for this new adventure Four years later our partnership continues with this new journey together The third level Merging our resource to add value to our community We approached Professor Fondon in the spring of 2017 to see if her COMM students via the student newsroom and media lab would be interested in taking our monthly publication The Network News to the next level says Laurie Cirillo The students and Professor Fondon gave us an enthusiastic YES A month into our new academic year Professor Fondon Laurie Melissa Velardi the SCLP graduate intern the student newsroom co editors from Communications Fatimah Alghamdi Ileah Duhart Jada Furlow Zoe Naglieri Prescod Mia Ryder and student contributors see last page across disciplines and clubs have worked together to design a new NETWORK NEWS The purpose of the newsletter is to engage students across disciplines in publishing stories about Bay Path student life events careers and opportunities The fourth level Engaging students from varied interests to collectively explore innovative thinking diversity and inclusion I was truly excited about the opportunity for students to have more of a voice across campus adds Janine Fondon We invite all students to participate and many have jumped right in from SGA Multicultural Affairs and various disciplines majors and interests I am also very proud of the founding newsroom editors who are embarking on this new journey as Communication majors who are honing their skills in professional writing social media and digital media We welcome contributors and collaborators to get involved in this virtual effort The fifth level Community This involves you Let s work together to get to know each other better We have an EASY way for you to request that something newsworthy be included in the Network News just email your idea to studentnewsroom baypath com Once received your idea will be evaluated and responded to by the editorial board If accepted a student reporter will connect with you to create the story It s that easy 3

Internships pave the way to JOBS Career Fairs With thanks to the Internship Fund Isabella Whitehead graduated from Bay Path in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Elementary Education and Liberal Arts degree She is currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Education and Educational Specialist MSEd EdS program for Reading and Literacy Instruction During the 2017 2018 academic year Isabella completed her internship at Meadow Brook Elementary School in East Longmeadow Massachusetts as a Student Teacher Her site was established through a professional connection that she maintained for years through her hometown Never burn your bridges she recommends Students who are looking for internships within education should try to choose an area where you want to end up afterwards She also advises students to reach out to faculty for help since her Academic Advisor had several connections within the area Finding a teaching placement whether as a student teacher or a full time position is competitive and having experience is beneficial Her internship prepared her with communication skills especially when communicating with parents organization and setting boundaries in the classroom Isabella who is now a 5th grade teacher at Soule Road Elementary School was one of the recipients of the Internship Fund provided by donors who wish to financially support students with a minimum wage compensation for the hours during their internships Megan would like to thank these donors again as it was extremely generous From the bottom of my heart she said Thank You With the fund Megan was able to purchase new supplies and decorations for her classroom 10 September UMASS Amherst Fall Career Fair Tech Jobs Internships Fair Thursday September 27th 10 00 a m 3 00 p m at UMASS Amherst October 1 Smith College Career Fair Thursday October 4th 3 30 p m 6 00 p m at Smith College Indoor Track and Tennis Facility 2 Westfield State University CJ Government Nonprofit Career Fair Tuesday October 11th 1 00 p m 4 30 p m at Woodward Center WSU 3 Westfield State University Business Communication Technology Career Fair Wednesday October 17 2018 1 00 p m 4 00 p m at Westfield State University Scanlon Banquet Hall

Min Henderson finds her future in the world of Cybersecurity Min Henderson is a senior at Bay Path University in Longmeadow MA where she is majoring in Information Assurance in Cybersecurity Program Min lives in Enfield since moving here from China in 2013 As an immigrant she started to learn English and went to start her college education at Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield CT She majored in Information System Technology She has learned Introduction to Software Application Database Design SQL Database Management Access Structured Programming and Web Design After graduating from Asnuntuck Community College she transferred to Bay Path University In the Fall semester of 2017 she took Fundamentals of Information Assurance In Spring semester of 2018 she completed a Google cooperate course called Jupyter Notebook Program Elementary Data Structure Network Intrusion and Net Security courses In the fall of 2018 she is taking Python Digital forensics and Introduction for Computer Science In the summer of 2018 she was a metrics intern at UTC where she collected information for software tools designed diagrams by Visio and wrote codes to pull logs from cybersecurity analyst tool Cloudflare Through instilling in a professional manner she solved problems and dealt with multiple projects while gaining new career skills She did research on digital future which made her think about how to make a robot to think like a human and to analyze data intelligently for cybersecurity She is very passionate to learn new skills about cybersecurity This research on cybersecurity will deepen her knowledge in the field Her career goal is to work in the cybersecurity field Her college education and internship have prepared her for this new journey in her future career 12 Sixth Annual Cybersecurity Career Networking Event Friday October 5 2018 8 00 a m 10 00 a m Location Blake Dining Room Longmeadow Campus Register via Baypath edu events

By Melissa Velardi Megan Benway is a senior Forensic Psychology major who completed her internship this past summer at the Office of Child and Family Services OCFS in Augusta Maine OCFS supports Maine s children and their families through behavioral health resources welfare programs early intervention and prevention services and other operations For 6 40 hour work weeks Megan assisted OCFS with support through observations home visits and completing required paperwork as documentation for each step of operations taken Internship Journey Forensic Psychology Major Megan Benway Through this experience Megan learned a wide range of knowledge including the entire adoption process stemming from a first initial report followed by assessments foster home placements and the resulting adoption Due to the nature of this work Megan has to uphold confidentiality and discretion to protect the children and families who she worked with However Megan was able to share some advice about her internship site and her education For other students who want to work in an OCFS office or other offices working with clients of this caliber Megan recommends finding a full time site to receive a full scope and a day today perspective about what that office does The skills that she gained from her experience include having composure in all situations thinking on your feet and keeping a non judgmental mind for clarity Megan said We are all humans Everybody is going to make mistakes Megan is set to graduate this December 2018 and wants to earn a Master of Social Work degree to continue working with at risk youth Life lessons on the job Have composure in all situations Think on your feet and Keep a non judgmental mind for clarity 13

Internship Fund Recipient Stories By Melissa Velardi Bay Path University is grateful for the generosity and support of donors who are financially supporting students by providing funding for unpaid internships The students are very thankful for this amazing opportunity We would like to recognize the recipients of this fund and highlight their accomplishments at their internship sites Our Bay Path Community is so appreciative of the generosity of the following donors who funded our student experiences Anne Fitzgerald George Jackie Keady Marilyn Walter Kate Low Gladys Sullivan Elizabeth Dineen Louise Kursmark Debbie Schreier Ham Wilson and Dr Carol Leary Amanda Adams was able to rotate through several departments at Holyoke Medical Center for her internship She ran Complete Blood Count CBC tests in the hematology department and assisted the processing station in the chemistry labs Amanda plans on attending graduate school to keep furthering her education Heather Anderson interned at Holyoke Medical Center alongside a Lab Academic Coordinator She learned the functions of medical equipment helped to set up samples for urinalysis and blood samples in the hematology department and was able to implement lab techniques that she learned at Bay Path Charitzzie Diaz was able to experience working in two different departments at Baystate Medical Center including the Emergency Department and the Internal Medicine Residency Charitizzie wants to pursue a career as a Physician Assistant and she recently accepted a position as a Basic Life Support instructor at Baystate Medical Training for this position required knowledge on how to treat life threatening illnesses and injuries Klaudia Drap completed her internship at Baystate Pediatric Endocrinology in Springfield Massachusetts where she was able to shadow a doctor and reinforce her decision to work within the pediatric field as a Physician Assistant PA She has already found two universities who offer patient contact hours to fulfill PA requirements Chelsea Greene Williams decided to enroll in a graduate school program for Behavioral Analysis and Public Policy with a specialization in Education after her internship at Berkshire Hills Music Academy She was able to work with young adults with intellectual disabilities and she now aspires to work with individuals on the autism spectrum Kim Kirkpatrick interned through the Digital Forensics department here at Bay Path She worked with James Scripture one of our professors to perform technical research on specific Android and iOs mobile devices She was able to acquire electronic data from each device and created a stepby step guide that will be incorporated into new and existing lesson modules for future Bay Path courses 14 Jessica Sushana will be featured in the October Issue of Network News She interned through the Key Program and received a Bachelor of General Psychology degree

Update Multicultural Affairs Contributing Writers Victoria Thomas Morgan Lyall Welcome Week Culture Shock and the Multicultural Block Party The Office of Multicultural Affairs hosted a Block Party during welcome week for all new students with the purpose of encouraging them to get out of their comfort zones while learning about the multicultural affairs mission and clubs and organizations under the department At the event students sampled diverse foods enjoyed multicultural music dance and cultural themed table activities Additionally there was an appearance of Culture Shock led by multicultural advocates Victoria Thomas and Carol Sanchez as a way to promote the construction of inter peer connectivity in a fun and low stress environment New students take part of Culture Shock This initiative was inspired by Soul Pancake s Strangers in a Ball Pit which was a YouTube film introduced to the new students at the Diversity and Inclusion Training held at Bay Path University facilitated by Lisa Tolusan Cultural Shock engaged many students in conversation following guided questions 22 New students and Peer Mentors enjoy lunch during the Multicultural Block Party

Events Bay Path students help launch International Day of the Girl during the COMMversations event on October 11 8 9 30 am at Empsall Hall JOIN US Event speakers include Girls Inc Executive Director Suzanne Parker Women s Fund of Western Mass CEO Donna Hagighat LuJuana Hood of the Pan African Historical Museum Kathryn Taccone Animator and author and Bay Path Professor and Springfield s Inaugural Poet Laureate Maria Luisa Arroyo will sign her book Donna Haghighat CEO of the Women s Fund Professor Maria Luisa Arroyo will sign her book that pays tribute to 32 poets Kathryn Taccone Animator Bay Path Students will launch the International Day of the Girl an international celebration designated by the United Nations with a COMMversation about women past present and future In honor of the day several Bay Path Communication students have created public service announcements to reflect their perspectives about how to encourage and inspire girls There will also be a COMMversation where the girls get the conversation going about how to create a Suzanne Parker Executive world where girls feel safe to be curious Director of Girls Inc of Holyoke LuJuana Hood right of the Pan African Hstorical museum of the USA 26 During this event Bay Path students of all disciplines will use there storytelling skills to focus on the issues and opportunities There will be a walk through gallery of their PSAs and event speakers will offer answers comments and share research from their organizations
