As the state’s largest land trust, we are a guardian of natural and working lands, public recreation areas, and drinking water resources. 1. Boldly Accelerate the Pace and Scale of Land and Water Conservation • Rapidly identify and protect lands of high conservation value in accordancewith regional conservation priorities• Dramatically increase land purchases through the use of and advocacy forpublic (state, federal, municipal) and foundation funding • Accelerate the protection of large, complex acquisitions and the region’s most imperiled lands through cutting-edge acquisition strategies• Advance regional land conservation eorts by providing technical support and direct funding for acquisitions with high conservation value to land trusts throughout Northwest Connecticut • Invest in and grow NCLC’s professional acquisition team to enable rapid acquisition response2. Expand the Protection and Restoration of NCLC’s Lands and Waters • Protect and defend NCLC’s conserved lands and waters against encroachment and violation to ensure their conservation values are protected in perpetuity • Broaden and deepen public support for conservation by developing and promoting a number of high-quality public nature preserves• Identify and leverage opportunities and resources to restore and enhance the region’s working lands, ensuring their long-term sustainability and productivity for the benet of local communities • Actively pursue opportunities and resources to protect and support the region’s rare, threatened, and endangered species, ensuring the preservation of biodiversity and the health of ecosystems 3. Promote Partnership and Collaboration to Strengthen the Capacity of the Land Conservation Community • Strengthen the capacity of land trusts in Northwest Connecticut to acquire and protect their conserved lands in perpetuity by providing technical assistance and support • Promote and expand collaboration and coordination to strengthen the region’s conservation organizations • Foster strong and secure conservation outcomes by serving as a regional “safety net” in the event that a land trust seeks a durable partnership or merger to protect its conservation properties in perpetuity• Promote and amplify the work of partner organizations to the public and elevate the importance of conservation broadly4. Strengthen NCLC’s Capacity to Accelerate the Pace of Conservation and Achieve its Strategic Goals through a Comprehensive Campaign• Dramatically increase NCLC’s membership to establish a robust and diverse foundation of support throughout the NCLC service region• Support the growth of NCLC’s professional sta to enable NCLC to increase revenue, acquire and protect more land, handle the increased responsibilities associated with a larger portfolio of conserved land, and connect more people to the land and NCLC’s mission • Augment the permanent endowment to generate a larger and more reliable stream of earnings, supporting annual operating expenses and the expansion of NCLC’s acquisition and stewardship programs • Develop and capitalize a Quick Strike Opportunity Fund (QSOF) to empower NCLC to swily respond to market opportunities and acquire high conservation value properties5. Attract, Support, and Retain Strong Governance Leaders with Diverse Competencies, Skills, Relationships, and Perspectives • Expand NCLC’s board of directors to include members in new geographic areas, with a focus on the northern part of NCLC’s service region• Increase board representation to ensure a diverse set of experiences and relevant skill sets to the board’s deliberations• Ensure board members prioritize the sustainability of the organization by actively participating in fundraising activities, serving as public ambassadors of the organization, and making NCLC their philanthropic priorityGoals and Strategies
