El Salvador

El Valle

Bordering Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, Honduras is one of the poorest Spanish-speaking countries in the Western Hemisphere. In a nation of almost 10 million inhabitants, Honduras has nearly 65% of its population living in poverty, with over 48% living below the poverty line. Poverty rates are higher among rural and indigenous people as well as in the south, west and along the eastern border than in the north and central areas where most of Honduras' industries and infrastructure are concentrated.

Struggling with high levels of economic disparity, Honduras ranks among the worst 25 nations in the world for income inequality.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the unprecedented impact of two successive hurricanes in recent years significantly affected Honduras’ economy, and its aftermath continues with the country’s GDP declining by 9%. Meanwhile, extreme poverty has increased in rural areas since 2014 and in urban areas since 2017.

FFTP began serving the poor people of Honduras in 1999, and works closely with our in-country partner CEPUDO (Capacitación, Educación, Producción, Unificación, Desarrollo y Organización) to implement international relief and economic development projects throughout all of Honduras.

The Macuelizo municipality is home to 6,076 residents, many of whom make a living through animal husbandry and the cultivation of basic grains. Sadly, this work does not produce enough funds for families to stay out of extreme poverty. As such, many of them do not have adequate places to live.

Most houses in Macuelizo are made of wood, bahareque and zinc. They are unsafe and unstable, posing a constant threat to families' health and overall safety. For many residents, the primary water source is the public water system, and they use firewood to cook their food. With your support, FFTP would like to construct five new homes for impoverished families in Macuelizo.

Help Build Homes for Your Neighbors

The residents of Macuelizo battle poverty each day, and five families here are praying that someone will bless them with the gift of a home. The little income that they make comes from meager tasks. Many residents earn about $50 per month, which does not cover their most basic needs.

In addition to the daily trials of poverty, Macuelizo residents have suffered many horrific events. From the effects of two hurricanes to a devastating pandemic, they have not had an opportunity to get back on their feet, let alone secure safe places to live.

Currently, some families live in makeshift houses made of whatever materials they have on hand. Rain has caused many of their shelters to deteriorate and lose their structural integrity. Water pours inside during storms, causing restless nights for everyone. These conditions can cause extreme illness, but parents must make do with what little they have.

Other families do not even have this kind of shelter. Some of the families you will support through this project live in borrowed houses. They do not have places of their own where their children can grow and feel safe.

Years of turmoil have caused these resilient families to send thousands of prayers to our Lord, hoping that someone will come and help them. We pray that you graciously consider lending them a helping hand. Your generous gift will construct five secure homes outfitted with water and sanitation components, healthy kitchens and essential furniture to welcome them into their new homes.

The work you will do for these families will be nothing short of life-changing. Families will have a safe place to live where their children can grow in peace. We invite you to prayerfully consider supporting these five families as they journey toward better lives. Together, let us be God's instruments of hope for these deserving families in need.

"And I will provide a place for My people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed."

2 Samuel 7:10

Jose Alfonso Diaz Portillo, his wife Maria and their three beautiful children are one of the families you could bless through this housing project. Currently, Jose's entire family lives in a house that is made of wood. "We only have two small beds where five of us sleep," he said. "We live in fear that our house will not resist the heavy rains."

Jose works in the field planting corn, earning $40 per month. Though he is currently making money to support his family, he suffers from strabismus, an eye disorder that he has had since birth. "I have a problem with my eyesight which makes it difficult for me to do my work," he explained. "Many times, I have severe headaches."

Jose feels a great deal of sadness that he cannot provide his daughters with a home. "One of my biggest dreams is to give my children a safe house where they can have a stable place to grow comfortably," he said. "I ask God and the Food For The Poor organization in my prayers to bless us with a home for my family."

Could you please help us answer Jose's prayer to provide a better life for his children?
