What can I do to helpduring a disaster?Some neighbors may have pre-existing vulnerabilitieslike access and/or functional needs. Let them know youare there to help if they were to need it during anemergency.Who can do what? Who knowswhat? Who has what?Let your neighbors know what skills or emergencyequipment you may have that can help during adisaster and how they might like to help too.What if my neighborsdon't want to join MYN?Know that not all neighbors will be open to participatingor attending meetings. Instead ask if they would like tostay informed about what the neighborhood is doing.Join the monthly Leader Council meetings sponsored byCOAD to connect with other neighborhood leaders.How do I attract interestamongst my neighbors?There may be someone you know willing to be a co-leader to model "working together." Block parties orBBQ's are a great way of getting to know yourneighbors. Make it a potluck and think of ways to helppeople connect. Having a large map on butcher papercan get people talking.What if my neighbordoesn't speak my language?Ask someone to translate (if possible) or use onlinetranslators like Google Translate & Linguee whenplanning with someone that doesn't speak yourlanguage. Don't be afraid to use hand gestures! Createemergency communication cards with both languageson it asking important questions and possible answers.What if my neighbor doesn'twant to share contact info?Many are concerned about sharing personalinformation and suspicious about organizing efforts.Making connections and feeling comfortable withothers can take time. Wait until people are ready toshare contact information. Affirm that contactinformation will just stay within the neighborhood.What emergencies haveyou experienced?What was it like for you and what concerns you mostnow? Most people in Napa have experienced at leastone emergency and can identify existing concerns theymay have relating to disasters.What should I consider asmy neighborhood?That is really up to each neighborhood. Typically 10-20homes is about right - your block on one or both sidesor your cul-de-sac. It might be different in anapartment complex or mobile home park. Think aboutnatural boundaries. In large groups, consider streetclusters.What is recognizableabout your home?A great way to start a conversation is by describing anyphysical identifiers on your home. (Ex: I'm the personthat lives in house with the big tree out front.) How do I start the conversation?First introduce yourself! Let people know why youhave been thinking about emergencypreparedness. We've had a lot of emergencies inNapa these last few years and it's important to beprepared.MYN Frequently Asked QuestionsWorking together to combine our skills and resources makes us more resilient and effective in responding toemergencies. During an emergency we all are vulnerable. Knowing people around you can reduce the chaos immediatelyafter a disaster. It might feel a little intimidating to try to connect with your neighbors about preparing together, butsometimes preparing on your own can be just as intimidating.
