Reflection Hello readers When I was about nine or ten I noticed my older sister typing some extravagant strings of words on our home computer I was used to playing games or watching videos on the computer so this was a surprise to me I had asked her what she was doing and she told me she was writing a story Even at nine years old the thought that kids wrote stories too had never occurred to me Even so I was vastly fascinated with this and started writing my own short stories On several sheets of notebook paper shoveled into a folder I had written my first story at age ten From then on I ve been writing all kinds of stories and even a few novels I ve continued pursuing this passion in Journal Writing Taking this Journal Writing class has given me much insight into more in depth writing I ve learned to not only graze the surface of a topic but fully immerse myself into the greatest depth of it All of these stories came from the heart Each story represents a particular time in my life or certain memory I want to preserve in writing I ve carefully chosen these six journals because I believe they provide the best angle into my writing and what I care about Sadly only one of these is a poem Usually I love writing poetry but journal writing doesn t normally call for it However I have converted one piece from prose to poetry I am very grateful for the writing opportunities I ve had while at Cowley and I ll be sad to go

Birth Story What I know about my birth story is that unlike my sister I was born in Ark City She was born in Winfield because we lived in Winfield I don t know why I was born at the Ark City hospital but I assume it s because my mom happened to be there Vaguely I remember hearing that she chose Ark City just to be different but I m not 100 sure One interesting fact my dad told me was that her water broke but I wasn t ready to come out yet So the doctor had to inject the water back inside and the tool hit me in the face I still have the mark It s blue in the right light and sits just above my lip That s really all I know about my birth story The hospital I was born in has since been demolished and I think that s kind of eerie I don t have any remnants from my birth or most of my early childhood I can only think of three or four photos that even exist of me as a baby and I only have one It s a little sad that there s almost no physical evidence of that time Although I do have a Tigger stuffed animal that I got when I was a little tiny baby I m not sure how old but I like that I ve kept it all this time

Earliest Memory One of my earliest memories is having my diaper changed It sounds too good to be true I know but I swear I can remember it My oldest sister was the one changing me and I must have had a rash because I can still smell the diaper rash cream I recall being laid out on the floor in a carpeted room with very thick short haired carpet I want to say it was my house in Winfield but the timeline doesn t add up The room was dark or dimly lit by a lamp and I feel like there were other people there probably siblings I can t be certain that this is a true memory but the first time I brought it up I had to have been seven or eight making it seem more legit I ve never confirmed with my sister or at least I don t remember it but I doubt she d remember that one instance out of the many

Fairy Tale I think if I were a fairy tale character in my work life I would be one of the seven Dwarfs I haven t watched them enough to know exactly which one but I think they would fit I m short and small so I imagine any work I do looks funny I work hard but not as hard as them When I think of them I imagine them all in a line and I don t know why but I see myself in that I think they sing while they work I really haven t seen the movie that many times or recently I work mostly in my car so I m constantly jamming out Even when the music isn t playing I come up with nonsense songs about what I m doing I have two dogs who I d like to think are helping when I m doing chores In reality they re the ones destroying it but sometimes I feel like they re doing their part If I had to assign characters to them I would choose two of the other Dwarfs Cola would be Sneezy because she is always sneezing Peaches would be Dopey because she always looks at me with that dopey expression I choose these because they are like little sidekicks who do random things and often make mistakes but I always need them and love them anyway

Always Always Something to Be Thankful for My greatest blessings in life are firstly my family because family means so much to me I don t know where I d be without them I constantly talk to them and see them when I can I know that not everyone has the same opportunities as I do when it comes to family so I show my gratitude by saying it I think in my head and outside how grateful I am And I know that they know I am grateful for them My second greatest blessing is my health Three of my siblings have serious diseases My mom is diabetic her mom and two brothers were are also diabetic I am extremely grateful to have my good health I ve seen it break down my family and I am happy to be completely healthy I show my gratitude by continuing to make healthy life decisions Eat healthy food drink plenty of water and exercise Thirdly I am so thankful for my dogs I honestly believe that my first dog has kept me so healthy I ve not been sick with anything more than a cold in the year we ve had her I think she s my guardian dog angel We just got a new puppy and even though most days she pushes me to my limit I am incredibly happy to have her I show my thanks for them by loving them

unconditionally They are basically my children and I treat them as such Treats walks snuggles I even let them on the 1000 mattress we just bought I pretty much already said this with my family but I am so thankful to have been an aunt for the past 15 years It has been such a blessing to watch them grow up I was spoiled for a year when four of them lived ten minutes away Now they ve since moved to California and the closest two are still three hours away I show thanks to them by reaching out and talking to them like they re older than they are and always finding fun ways to spend time together Gosh I miss them And I think my last blessing I d like to share is my education I ve been very fortunate to be able to attend college and remain financially stable I ve seen a lot of my family not make it through college because of money I m grateful to my parents for that Also I m grateful to be living in a house with my boyfriend The list goes on and on

Family Mystery Two parents parents One dad named Jerry and The other dad named Jerry One brother named Thomas And another brother named Thomas Two parents eyes Blue and blue And their hair Brown Both Some background on this poem both of my parents fathers names is Jerry Both of them also has a brother named Thomas They both have brown hair and blue eyes One additional similarity not mentioned in the poem is that both of their grandfathers died young and their grandmothers outlived them by a lot Not a family mystery but weird similarities

Something Old My great grandmother s bureau is made of solid wood and weighs a ton She purchased it from a furniture store many years ago It must be close to 100 years old or a little less It looks like a buffet After she passed my grandfather had it and then somehow it fell into my mother s hands It spent some time at one of my dad s rental houses as well which my mom was not too happy about as they stained it in several spots After that it was given to me I believe I was sixteen or seventeen when it landed in my bedroom I ended up taking it with me when I got my first apartment and we just moved it into our first home I suppose its value comes from its age and that it was my great grandmothers I like to think that all my siblings would be happy to have it and so I cherish it greatly I don t plan to pass it on anytime soon It would be amazing to pass it on to my own children or even grandchildren and I think that s what my grandmother would have wanted
