44 | my aruba guide my aruba guide | 45 I think that not unlike myself, most people want to know the journey of interesting people, who they are and how they got there. My big question? Are they still able to remain humble and accessible? I know of such a person whom I will present to you in this story.Having been previously involved with Aruba Nights (now My Aruba Guide), I just had to include my very good friend Ravi Lalwani, the owner of Kristie’s Jewels in Paseo Herencia Mall. What brought the two of us so close in our friendship over these 20 years? Well to start, we both have children of similar ages where it was really nice that we had that extra dimension of family to share and of course that really opened up our friendship. But I have to say there was one other key element that allowed a special trust and really brought us together. Ravi is from India where I had also lived for several years and got to know his culture and customs very well. Ravi has lived here on Aruba for 27 years where he and his wife Anita, have together built a very successful jewelry business singlehandedly. Other than focus on success for this article, I needed to ask Ravi what drives him? What’s the big motivator? Ravi leaned over and quietly shared a couple of things with me, which made me realize this is what he had built his Kristie’s identity upon. Number one he said is, “meeting & developing trusting relationships with my customers. And secondly at this point I get to tell them my passion, that I’m just really crazy about diamonds, precious stones and creating, designing and presenting them in the latest trends.”At the back of the store Ravi has assembled his pride and joy, a selection of Kristie’s handpicked diamonds and fine jewelry pieces for all to admire and purchase. I don’t think I’m Ravi’s only single testimony to his honesty, humility and integrity because well over half of his clientele all come from referrals and now he has one more. He has mine. The Aruba Aloe company exports some of the finest quality aloe in the world. However, there are also surprising locally made treasures created by both Arubans and expats alike. For example, don’t miss the insanely delicious baked goods at the locally owned T2Pan Sourdough Boutique, which specializes in naturally leavened bread and artisanal pastries. The owner is also a Certified Bread Sommelier!Additionally, keep an eye out for the new artisanal spirits craed by the unlikely duo of Dutch and Austrian expat beach tennis players. 52 | my aruba guide my aruba guide | 53Art by Rani Handcraed Ceramics You might have already experienced this art without realizing it, as Rani Varde’s beautiful hand-craed ceramic plates are in high demand for use in fine dining establishments all around the island. Once you witness it, you’re sure to recognize the unique style of what she calls “functional ceramics”—tableware, decorative dishes, and vases—art that can be used in everyday life, not simply admired. Originally hailing from Shillong in North India, Rani credits her creative style to “NIRA,” which in Sanskrit means flowing like water, but she also likes to incorporate Western influences in her style. Her preferred mediums of artistic expression are paintings, pyrography (wood burning), and pottery, and she credits her love of meditation as a source of fresh ideas. (In fact, she also gives free meditation courses!) In her ceramic work, no two pieces are alike. They all bear a mark or flaw to set them apart, making each one “imperfectly perfect,” as she calls them. Aruba’s nature also inspires her, and you’ll see that reflected in her collections like the Ayo Bowls inspired by the island’s unique rock formations. She frequently gives workshops where you can create your own ceramic keepsake, but you’ll always find her unique signature souvenir line at The Atelier - Made on Aruba in Paseo Herencia Mall. Her work is also available at Artitudes Art Shop in Oranjestad and at Space 21ART in San Nicolas. View her eclectic collections or order a custom piece from her website. Her aim to create a luxury fashion accessory brand sustainably sourced from indigenous communities around the world garnered her a fellowship to represent Aruba in the coveted Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative in 2016. Today, the stunning wearable art of her company FAIR BLVD has already graced the runways of the prestigious Emirates Fashion Week in Dubai and captured the attention of the global fashion elite. No self-respecting restaurant or household will be without at least one bottle of Hot Delight to enhance any meal. This “pica” (hot sauce) was originally created by Aurelio Ruiz over three decades ago as a hobby to give to family and friends. But the addictive elixir of locally grown papayas and Madame Janette peppers, combined with his secret ingredients, became so extremely popular that eventually, he began to produce it commercially, and it became the family business. Today, you’ll find both versions “Pica di Papaya” (mild hot) and “Madame” (very hot) available island-wide. They also ship worldwide now, too. •www.hotdelightaruba.com

56 | my aruba guide my aruba guide | 57A little background… Some 90 dierent nationalities now call this island home, so it’s not surprising that Aruba’s Carnival began as a creative gumbo of cultural celebrations, masquerade balls, costume parties, and tribute parades from elsewhere. Due to the influx of immigrants from around the world who were needed to work at the booming Lago Oil Refinery in the late ’40s and early ’50s, San Nicolas has become the seat of the island’s Carnival origins. The workers from Trinidad and Tobago (historic home of the most famous Caribbean Carnival) are credited for bringing steel pan music to the island. Though the festivities don’t begin in earnest until January, the establishment of the Aruban Carnival Foundation—founded at 11:11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th of November in 1966—marks the oicial beginning of the season. Since 1981, when Tivoli, the island’s oldest social club, held a parade in Oranjestad with twinkling lights, tiny lights have been sewn right into the fabric of the stunning costumes for the Torch Parade. The painstaking toil put into the themed regalia each year is right o the charts! (See some past costume examples at the Carnival Euphoria Exhibition in San Nicolas.).Though Aruba is already known as One Happy Island, this little nation is never more infectiously jubilant than during the months-long celebration of Carnival. And now you can participate right in a parade—just like a localCome join the Carnival! by Susan CampbellCelebrate, Dance, Unite!

Page 59

56 | my aruba guide my aruba guide | 57Today, Aruba’s Carnival spans over two months with gala pageants, lively music competitions, and many parades held all over the island. It culminates in the Grand Parade in Oranjestad when the entire island comes out to celebrate. You’ll find that this island’s celebratory vibe is more family-friendly in its physical and musical expression than many other islands—though no less electric and invigorating! In fact, the two dedicated Children’s Parades have become some of its most popular events.Want to join the jubilation like a local? You need not be an ardent “carnavalista” to participate in the festivities now if you plan ahead with the Aruba Tourist Carnival Group. They oer visitors a complete carnival experience with the opportunity to join right in the march in a choice of three dierent parades, all suited up with a special costume that you order ahead. The packages include food and drinks, light-up mugs, and group guides, with optional add-ons like hotel stay, activities, and much more. You also learn the most popular road march music ahead so you can sing along and practice the dance/march moves via instructional videos on their website. 60 | my aruba guide my aruba guide | 61Aruba Happiness Beads Project Inspirational art helps healing for sick childrenTalented local artist Deborah de Weerd has created beautiful hand-craed glass beads imbued with the bright colors of Aruba’s national flag as her contribution to the philanthropic Carry a Bead© program. This foundation collects these tokens of hope to send to sick children undergoing treatments in hospitals around the world. Each of these beads are also infused with a bubble of fresh ocean air to encapsulate the island’s inherent healing happiness. The children receive the beads as milestones in their treatments, and they string them to create strands to memorialize their courage through diicult journeys. But it’s oen the handwritten notes from strangers that they cherish the most. The concept is to harness a transfer of positive energy. The kits consist of two identical beads and a blank return card. Wear them during an inspirational experience, then return one bead back to the Beads of Courage© foundation along with a note about why you chose that activity to transfer encouraging vibes to the child they will send it to. Purchase Aruba Happiness Beads from the artist herself at Loretti Design Studio. www.lorettidesign.com Giving Back &Creating Changeby Susan CampbellAruba is not just a tropical paradise; it’s also home to remarkable individuals and organizations committed to making a dierence. 60 | my aruba guide my aruba guide | 61ScubbleBubbles Promoting ocean conservation to Aruba’s youthFounded in 2018 by PADI Master Instructor Nichole Danser, ScubbleBubbles is a non-profit foundation dedicated to making ocean conservation accessible to Aruba’s youth. Since SCUBA certification can be costly, much of the work required for ocean conservation can remain out of reach. This organization addresses that by oering free or reduced dive training to local students. Once certified, these young divers can participate in reef cleanups, as well as coral restoration projects at the in-water coral nurseries. ScubbleBubbles also collaborates with the Aruba Conservation Foundation and the University of Aruba to train participants in coral health, classification, and restoration techniques. Certified divers, including tourists, are welcome to volunteer. The organization oers a variety of conservation-focused courses, their PADI Reef Rescue Specialty course includes hands-on diving at the nurseries, and course fees help fund youth dive training. Non-diving locals and visitors alike can now also volunteer at their new on-land coral facility and are always invited to participate in their regularly scheduled beach clean-ups, too. And of course, donations are always appreciated.www.scubblebubbles.org The Mary Joan Foundation A caring community for breast cancer warriors Battling breast cancer can be a lonely journey for those without support, and losing hair due to radiation treatments can wreak havoc on a woman’s sense of self-esteem. That’s why Aruba’s Mary Joan Foundation was formed. Created in loving memory of Mary Joan Geerman, a pioneer in raising awareness for local women bravely battling the disease while she was alicted with it herself, she paved the way to today’s vibrant breast cancer support community. Beyond oering comfort, hope, and a sense of belonging, the foundation provides hair pieces free of charge to those who want them. Their wig-making initiative is staed by certified volunteers who make the wigs from donated hair, and many of the volunteers are breast cancer survivors themselves. Mary Joan would certainly be proud, and you can help by donating your hair to them via their website while on island, or with monetary donations to the many initiatives of these committed cancer warriors. 62 | my aruba guide my aruba guide | 63Aruba Conservation Foundation Safeguarding the island’s fragile ecosystems and biodiversityThe people of this island are happy to share their natural treasures with visitors, but they also strive to be protective of their rich and diverse ecosystems and biodiversity. The Aruba Conservation Foundation (ACF) is the independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to managing nature areas that encompass nearly 26% of the island, including Arikok National Park and Parke Marino Aruba—four designated marine protected areas. They work with the local community to launch projects that engage the public and inspire the next generation of conservation leaders through hands-on education. They’ve also partnered with the Aruba Tourism Authority to develop programs that will enlighten visitors on how best to enjoy the island’s natural attractions responsibly. One way to do so is via guided tours by their Nature Experience Rangers, who oer curated tours to get up close to learn about the fragile interdependence of Aruba’s flora and fauna. You’ll learn fascinating facts about endemic and sometimes endangered species like the quirky burrowing owl, rare wild parrots, and neon blue colored lizards. Set up 3 bowls: one for the flour, one for the eggs, and one for the coconut. Season the flour with 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper.3. Coat each chicken strip in flour, dip into the egg, and then coat with grated coconut. Spread them out on a baking sheet while preparing the remaining strips.4. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry the chicken strips in batches until golden and crispy, about 3 minutes. Drain on paper towel. Taste and add more seasoning if needed. The strips should be quite salty and spicy to balance the sweetness of the coconut. Serve with Honey-Mango Sauce.Instructions:Combine the mayonnaise, mango, honey, and Tabasco in a food processor and blend until smooth. Season to taste.Ingredients:• 1 lb (450g) boneless chicken thighs, cut into ½ inch (1 cm) thin strips• 2 eggs, whisked• 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour• 2 cups (200g) grated, unsweetened coconut• Salt and pepper• Cayenne pepper• Vegetable oil, for fryingIngredients:• 1 cup (250 ml) good quality mayonnaise• 1 cup (175g) mango, chopped• 1 tablespoon honey• 1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce• Salt and pepperHoney-Mango SauceMakes 1 cup (250 ml)This is a recipe from the book “Island Vibes the Joy of Caribbean Cooking” by Curaçao chef Helmi Smeulders. Available at local bookstores and online via: www.helmismeulders.com/shop.In my philosophy, anything can be delicious as long as you use fresh, high-quality ingredients. Even a simple dish like these chicken fingers can become a showstopper! Use chicken thighs instead of dry chicken breasts for more flavor. 162 | my aruba guide my aruba guide | 163Though some hot spots are found elsewhere on the island, most nightlife action revolves around two main regions. The Palm Beach “strip” is always electric aer dark in front of the high-rise hotels on L.G. Smith Blvd. and no car is required to barhop with ease. And there’s always something happening all around Renaissance Marketplace in downtown Oranjestad. But the party spirit begins early here, and usually on the sea!Party boats, buses, & surfside barsGet a head start to rev up with a rollicking Havana Sunset Cruise aboard Pelican Adventures’ fun catamaran where you can learn to salsa with their instructors before you hit the dance floors later. (Unlimited mojitos get hips moving!) Then enjoy happy hour drink specials and great snacks at their Pelican Pier Bar. Or head to Holiday Inn’s Oceanside Bar & Grill Aruba for 2-for-1 drinks beginning at 3pm, their beachfront is an excellent place for a final daylight dip. Also, a fab spot for a swim at happy hour is Rum Reef Cocktail Bar & Grill just outside of San Nicolas. They have a gorgeous infinity adult-only pool overlooking Baby Beach and live music every Sunday. Also on the water is SharQys Bahia’s fiesta oasis to watch the ships go by and enjoy premium giant margarita specials on the downtown harbor. The West Desk Island Grill & Beach Bar is also within cruise ship spotting distance nearby for buckets of beer, creative cocktails, and sumptuous small plates of Caribbean specialties. Or you can leave the driving to the fun folks of Kukoo Kunukoo. They have fabulous barhopping “parranda”’ style bus tours that go all over the island where you’ll have as much fun on the bus as you will in the clubs!Camaraderie CornersIn the mood to belly up to the bar and raise a few with friendly locals? Eetcafe The Paddock on the downtown marina is the classic spot for expat Dutch elbow-bending and fanatical soccer fans. Expect a sea of orange shirts if the Netherlands are playing. Bingo! Bar & Restaurant in Noord is another favorite for Dutch expats seeking a taste of home pub culture with authentic Dutch fare and beer. Or if you’re seeking an American sports fix, head for Double Down Sports Bar at Eagle Resort.Dancing & sing-along spotsFind The Old Dutch in Noord, a friendly local pub with killer cra beers that morphs into a live music rockfest at night on their alfresco patio. Want to dance on the bar? It’s almost a requirement at The Saloon Aruba in South Beach Mall, a wild west blowout party spot with Texas-sized drinks, live music, AND hardcore karaoke. Or grab a cocktail at trendy Fusion Cuisine in Paseo Herencia and enjoy free live entertainment in their colonial courtyard. Renaissance Marketplace downtown is also a musical smorgasbord. Cuba’s Cookin’ has nightly live Latin music every night, or grab one of their “best mojitos in town” to go, and dance along to the nightly live bands in the public square. Take a break at colorful Camara De Lobos, they have bottomless sangria specials and skewered snacks, too. Later, join the glam, stylish crowd for Vegas style VIP clubbing with bottle service, pulsating lights, and hot DJs at The Oice just o the strip. They stay open until the wee hours.Where’s the Party?

You’ll also find insanely good cra cocktails tucked away at Holiday Inn Resort’s Agave Mexican Cuisine. Their talented mixologists can create something exotically original just for you, too.The bar at Brutto Aruba is also on trend, oen ahead of the curve, with very creative drinks, house music, and a dazzling selection of shareables. And another future-forward spot is the Perfect Shot Restaurant located in the new Metro Mall. They use next-level technology to custom print images captured from your camera in liquid on the foam of your cocktail or coee. So cool! They also serve an excellent selection of creative small bites. Practically next door, Carnivorus Grill & Cocktail Lounge oers a relaxed lounge vibe with great drinks to enjoy. Or go retro-romantic at Quinta del Carmen’s magnificent 100-year-old mansion’s gorgeous antique bar or share specialty drinks and delectable bites in their lovely tapas garden. Also classic is Pappa’s Cigar Lounge hidden away in Papiamento Restaurant’s historic family home for upscale digestives and an aer-dinner smoke. And you’ll find a new speakeasy-style parlor in South Beach Mall called The Barn. The vibe is smooth live whisky blues music, meticulously craed cocktails, and top-notch cigars. And of course, there’s the high-rolling classy action at the island’s cosmopolitan casinos. Aruba Marriot’s Stellaris Casino, Hilton’s The Casino Aruba, and Casino at The Ritz-Carlton Aruba are all best bets for a glam night out. 192 | my aruba guide my aruba guide | 192Royal Jewels & Diamonds Generational Pride Sammy & Raj seemed to be blessed with good fortunes as they were able to secure a new location in the Hotel Zone, right on the main hotel strip across from the Barcelo Hotel. The presence of Royal Jewels & Diamonds right in the thick of the action has changed their business model considerably. Now, the continued pedestrian traic, as well as the closeness to the high-rise hotels, has brought a more convenient place of business where Raj says, “We now see a greater volume of store traic almost daily. People love the proximity and I love welcoming all our loyal, returning clients and meeting so many new people as well.” But it isn’t only the address change that’s new. Sammy and Raj have welcomed in Krish, their 24-year-old Barcelona & Holland educated son, thrilled at the idea of making his mark in the store and the world. As we watch our children grow into maturity and adulthood it’s every parent’s dream to see how they will turn out and, in some cases, it just seems to fit their DNA to move into the family business. Krish seems totally up to the challenge. Not only is this new generation of new ideas and fresh energy inspiring everyone, but Krish’s talent is steeped in design whereby he transforms clients’ old jewelry into modern, contemporary designs so that they can be produced within days of their vacation. From sketch to fruition, a truly unique skill that has both Mom & Dad beaming with pride. With continued humility both Sammy and Raj stand back and see how destiny has taken them forward and never for a moment take for granted the wonderful opportunities that have been bestowed upon them, their family, and their Royal Jewels store clientele.+1 646-205-0839 / +297 280-4990royaldiamonds@usa.netwww.royaljewelers.netET
