24 | my aruba guideThough Aruba appears as a tiny speck on the world map, larger-than-life characters who hail from our ‘dushi tera’ (beloved land) are making big global splashes.Locally loved, and oen internationally respected, Aruba’s heroes range from trailblazing leaders like Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes, the first woman ever to hold this prestigious oice, to esteemed fashion designer Ronchi de Cuba. Founder of Aruba Reef Care Foundation Castro Perez was knighted for his decades of marine conservation eorts, and veteran journalist Hilario Donker is applauded for his ongoing promotion of San Nicolas. Though some local heroes are expats, they’ve made their adopted home a better place by spearheading important organizations like Edith Van der Wal’s TurtugaAruba that protects sea turtles, and Desiree Eldering’s Donkey Sanctuary Aruba. Jodi Tobman’s retail stores like The Lazy Lizard and The Juggling Fish have been quietly donating portions of proceeds to local charities for years, while dynamic multimedia artist Armando Goedgedrag beautifying the entire island with his outstanding art has not gone unnoticed either. We thank them all. •Edjean SemeleerPerforming Artist & Creative Entrepreneur Keeping the Culture Alive With an artistic track record of 30 years, singer, TV host, concert producer, and philanthropist Edjean Semeleer is also loved for his annual Christmas concerts “Hey… ta Pasco!” He’s won numerous prestigious awards for his cultural contributions and co-founded the new Go Cultura Foundation, dedicated to promoting Aruba’s creative industries and helping local artists. But you must see him perform. At 40, Edjean’s incessantly boyish charm makes him appear much younger, but once he sings in that classic crooner style, it’s readily apparent that he’s an old soul. Maybe he inherited that musical maturity from his biggest inspiration ‘Padú’ (Juan Chabaya Lampe,) Aruba’s best-loved musical legend and composer of the national anthem “Aruba Dushi Tera”. Edjean first performed publicly at the age of ten, and over the years, Padú became a beloved friend, and they experienced many fantastic musical events together until the master passed away in 2019. Edjean says, “My journey has been an enjoyable symphony of growth, but nurturing the next generation of talent to amplify the vibrant soul of Aruba is fast becoming one of its most rewarding highlights.” Visit: www.gocultura.org www.justcallmeEd.comCULTURELocal Heroes by Susan Campbell

my aruba guide | 25Kiara ArendsMiss Universe Aruba 2022 Charity Founder & Legal Eagle Brains, benevolence, and beauty make Kiara Arends a triple threat and a true inspiration to young women everywhere. She has an irrepressible drive, and by the age of only 25, she had earned her master’s in international business, trade, and tax law, represented Aruba on the world stage as Miss Universe Aruba 2022, and founded a charity dedicated to underprivileged young mothers-to-be called ‘BUMP’. She’s also fluent in five languages, and she’s just getting started!Kiara reflects on the guiding light and inspiration behind her drive, “My remarkable mother is a beacon of determination and ambition. Her dedication and commitment to create positive change, first as a primary school teacher, then later as a school principal, taught me that no challenge is insurmountable, and education paves the way to freedom.”And though her prestigious pageant experiences enhanced her confidence and provided a platform to connect with inspiring women worldwide, hertrue passion lies in the legal field. Today, she works at esteemed local firm Kloes Kock and Partners and intends to pass the bar next year. She says, “The legal realm encapsulates everything I hold dear – my desire to help others, my competitive spirit, and my unwavering dedication to continually become a better version of myself to generate meaningful change.” Outside the courtroom, Kiara finds solace in the sea, a passion rooted from her competitive swimming days. She also participates in Aruba’s Carnival each year, adorning herself in glamour and radiance to wholeheartedly embody its spirit of celebration and national unity.”We are honored to have Kiara grace the cover of our 2024 edition.

26 | my aruba guideXander BogaertsMajor League Baseball Player Dare to Dream Foundation Co-Founder You needn’t be a sports fan to recognize the unique name and the beaming smile of Xander Bogaerts. He made a huge splash during his run as famed shortstop and third baseman for the Boston Red Sox (two World Series wins), and now impresses with exceptional skills playing for the San Diego Padres. (He’s also on the MLB All-Star Team and represents the Netherlands in international competitions). Although fame came quickly for the young athlete, and he’s now ‘royalty’ as a “Knight in the Order of Oranje Nassau”, this homegrown hero never forgets his roots. During o season, you’ll oen find Xander visiting family and friends, playing dominoes, and swimming in the sea to relax and unwind on his one happy island… and giving back.Along with his mother Sandra Brown, Xander created the Dare to Dream Foundation dedicated to financing young local baseball players with equipment to play their favorite sport. 40 | my aruba guideJEWELRYTIWI think that not unlike myself, most people want to know the journey of interesting people, who they are and how they got there. My big question? Are they still able to remain humble and accessible? I know of such a person whom I will present to you in this story. This being the last issue of Aruba Nights I will be involved with, I just had to include my very good friend Ravi Lalwani, the owner of Kristie’s Jewels in Paseo Herencia Mall. What brought the two of us so close in our friendship over these 20 years? Well to start, we both have children of similar ages where it was really nice that we had that extra dimension of family to share and of course that really opened up our friendship. But I have to say there was one other key element that allowed a special trust and really brought us together. Ravi is from India where I had also lived for several years and got to know his culture and customs very well. Ravi has lived here in Aruba for 27 years where he and his wife Anita, have together built a very successful jewelry business singlehandedly.Other than focus on success for this article, I needed to ask Ravi what drives him? What’s the big motivator? Ravi leaned over and quietly shared a couple of things with me, which made me realize this is what he had built his Kristie’s identity upon. Number one he said is, “meeting & developing trusting relationships with my customers. And secondly at this point I get to tell them my passion, that I’m just really crazy about diamonds, precious stones and creating, designing and presenting them in the latest trends.”At the back of the store Ravi has assembled his pride and joy, a selection of Kristie’s handpicked diamonds and fine jewelry pieces for all to admire and purchase. I don’t think I’m Ravi’s only single testimony to his honesty, humility and integrity because well over half of his clientele all come from referrals and now he has one more. He has mine. • Located at Paseo Herencia Mall+297 586-0599info@kristiesjewels.comwww.kristiesjewels.comA Coee With Kristie’sWritten by Douglass MarkusDesigned by Ravi

my aruba guide | 41JEWELRYCelebrates 25 YEARS on ARUBA!A conversation with Founder’s Dan & Raj Chugani, and son Tesh ChuganiWhat continues to inspire you to grow your family business? Dan & Raj Chugani: We grew up in very humble surroundings and started this business to give our kids a better opportunity. Today we are blessed to have a successful business with many faithful clients and have a legacy that will be continued by our children. We also hope to inspire by giving back to Aruba and to create a lasting legacy on the island. Where does the name Kay’s name come from?Dan & Raj Chugani: We are a family owned and operated business in the Caribbean for 34+ years. When deciding upon a name, we wanted to incorporate our parents. Kay was short for our Dad’s name and our Mom’s name started with S, hence Kay’s. We truly believe their blessings are with us as we have grown to 6 Caribbean Islands. How have you handled the changing retail environment and growth of your business?Tesh Chugani: When we choose to expand, we firstly ensure that we have the right team in place to pass on our mission statement, “Luxury with a Family Touch.” We also ensure that our production factory and family design team can make this happen without compromising the quality of our products. What continues to motivate you on a daily basis? Tesh Chugani: This is simple, I have a deep passion for our clients. There is a true meaning to our saying, “walk in as a friend, leave as family.” It never ceases to humble me when people make time to come see our new jewelry collections, shop for family & friends, and share family updates. The success of our family business would not exist if it wasn’t for our clients and sales team’s loyalty and commitment. There is no better fulfillment than to see happy customers & happy members of our KFJ Team. • Weststraat 8, Downtown Oranjestad+297 588-9978info@kaysnejewelry.comwww.kaysnejewelry.comTIWKay’s Fine Jewelry

42 | my aruba guideThis is a story about Nick Varde. The fact that he owns Eternity Fine Jewels is secondary to what he really does in this world and on Aruba. Nick has a true gi. A gi that allows him to make an upliing contact with almost everybody he meets. By using his store as his business card Nick manages to have rewarding communication and connectivity with almost everyone who enters through his doorway. Who has ever heard of such a combination? It’s a little bit hard to explain and maybe I should draw on my own experience here, but every time I either visit with Nick or see him having conversations with people entering his store he just seems to put the business aside, lights up the room with his energy, exuberance and his genuine desire to share himself and his listening ear with all. It’s almost as if he were a magnet that attracts. And Nick is genuine in what and how he speaks, which is probably what is felt on mine and everyone’s personal radar. 44 | my aruba guideIf Coral Could Talk by Susan CampbellCoral reefs are under tremendous stress due to climate change, man-made damage, invasive species, and even disease. But maybe we humans would better protect them if they could simply tell us what they need. When I was young, I loved it when my globetrotting aunt would bring me sparkly, spray-painted “sea rocks” as souvenirs. I had no idea that these ‘rocks’ were once living things. Today, many people do realize that coral is alive as there’s so much news about reefs ‘dying’ due to climate change and coral bleaching. But there’s still much we don’t know about these crucial ecosystems. So, maybe if coral could communicate with us humans, here are a few things they might say…“Please get to know us better…”If coral could talk, they’d want you to know they’re not plants, though they contain plant-like algae within them. They’re not rocks either, though their skeletons are akin to limestone. They are small sea creatures related to jellyfish. When you encounter a coral mass, it’s not one single entity. It’s an entire community of gazillion little ‘polyps’—transparent, jelly-like beings—sometimes as small as a pinhead, all living together in one spot. Each of these little creatures inhabits a ‘corallite’ like an underwater apartment building. They create these underwater homes by building upon their ‘stony’ dead ancestors’ skeletons. Polyps secrete calcium carbonate (limestone) as the glue to hold their corallites together. Though they work together as a community, each polyp has its own space, its own mouth, and its own teeny-tiny set of tentacles tipped with a stinging agent that paralyzes their food. Each little being plays a crucial part in building the enchanting, colorful underwater cities that are essential homes to a multitude of fish and reef creatures.“Please make our behavior easier to understand…”If coral could talk, they might ask marine scientists to use simpler words to help educate the public. Words like ‘zooplankton’ and ‘bacterioplankton’ are a mouthful to describe the tiny sea particles ACTIVITIES

Page 47

my aruba guide | 45that they eat. And ‘zooxanthellae’ is such a long word for the microscopic algae that live within polyps and provide them with most of their nutrition via photosynthesis. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship, as coral provides a protective casing to house them.Their reproductive behavior is complex too. Most coral reproduce by a process called ‘broadcast spawning.’ They take cues annually from the cycle of the moon to simultaneously release both eggs and sperm in an event that looks like underwater fireworks. If you’re certified to dive, it’s a spectacle that should be at the top of your bucket list.“Please admire us from afar…”If coral could talk, they would ask you to keep your distance. Whenever you touch coral, even very lightly, you leave traces of toxins behind that polyps can ingest, which can make them sick. Hard pressure can crush the fragile creatures. And it goes without saying that standing on a reef is a guaranteed death sentence for them. Also, kicking sand in their direction, with your feet or your fins, can smother them too. They are defenseless against our inadvertent assaults. So, be acutely aware of your actions while swimming, snorkeling, or diving around coral reefs.“Please do your part to keep our oceans clean…”If coral could talk, we’re sure they’d ask you not to leave trash on the beaches that could end up in the sea. They’d also ask you to avoid single-use plastics. Conserve water, recycle when you can, and use reef-safe sunscreen that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals. They might also ask you to leave their dead ancestors you might find on the beach alone as well. Shells, coral pieces, and even rocks play an important part in stemming beach erosion. And, of course, never purchase souvenirs made with anything living from the sea. Every little action can make a big dierence.“Please help the groups that help us!”If coral could talk, they would encourage visitors to support the many non-profit organizations throughout the ABC islands that protect and rebuild the coral reefs. Projects like beach and reef clean-ups, planting new coral nurseries and building the gardens, and educating youth on marine life preservation always welcome volunteers. And donations are always welcome, too. You can even adopt a coral! 48 | my aruba guideACTIVITIESSpending the day in Aruba’s colorful capital is a must while on holiday here, no matter where you are staying. There’s so much to explore in this compact historical city, and the enchanting oerings are always evolving! Walk the Walk... Captivating trails await throughout the maze of candy-colored colonial buildings punctuated by historical monuments, museums, outdoor art, and the refreshing green spaces of Oranjestad. And it’s a breeze to explore on foot. In fact, it’s one of the most pedestrian-friendly capitals in the Caribbean. If you are staying in the Palm Beach or Eagle Beach region, downtown is easily accessible by car, taxi, or even public bus. Aruba’s transit system is fast, safe, and reliable, and buses stop at almost every major resort and beach all along the coast. The main terminal is right in the middle of downtown where you can begin your walking explorations. There are also colorful streetcar-like electric trams that depart from the cruise terminal and loop around downtown. And they are not just for cruise passengers; anyone is welcome to hop on and o as they please, and best of all, they are free! But if you really want to dig deep into the culture and history of downtown Oranjestad, book a fun and informative outing with Aruba Walking Tours. You’ll learn so many interesting facts on this tour guided by locals. Like why you keep seeing life-sized blue ceramic horses popping up all around downtown. Or why historic Fort Zoutman seems to be located so far from the sea! You will also be able to climb the historic Willem III Tower there for unequalled panoramic views. (This is where the Bon Bini Festival weekly cultural festival is held Tuesday nights.) They also make a stop at the National Archaeological Museum housed in the historic Ecury family home that has an interesting backstory about Boy Ecury, a World War II hero. You are also welcome to visit this museum on your own; it’s open to the public and admission is free.EnchantingOranjestad by Susan CampbellONLINE CONCIERGE DESK

Page 51

my aruba guide | 49Helpful Tip: If you’d rather discover downtown on foot when it’s not as congested with the throngs of eager explorers from the cruise ships, check the Aruba Ports Authority website to see how many ships are in port on any given day. www.arubaports.comShop Until You Drop...One of the biggest draws to downtown is the vast and eclectic array of shopping options. This is where you’ll find great deals on everything from high-end designer fashions to upscale jewelry, gems, and brand-name timepieces, electronics, cosmetics, perfumes, and, of course, souvenirs! You’ll find the usual suspects of Caribbean-style souvenirs along the marina stalls, but it’s worth it to make the extra eort to sleuth out more unique keepsakes. Look for Dutch Del Blue pottery or made-in-Aruba handcraed treasures to take home in the backstreets and tucked away in mini-malls. There is also a fabulous local arts and cras fair in the Renaissance Marketplace every Friday night.ACTIVITIES

Page 52

50 | my aruba guideACTIVITIESAlso, in the Renaissance Marketplace, you’ll find a colorful collection of one-of-a-kind resin art sculptures and art pieces at Designs of Color by Dariana. Locally made fine-quality spirits like the award-winning Bodegas Papiamento Aruba Reserve Rum also make divine souvenirs. And anything made from Aruba’s world-class local aloe is always an ideal purchase for your time on the island and to take home as well.Sip, Snack, and Play!Oranjestad outings can become hot, but thankfully, there are plenty of fabulous spots to relax, refuel, and rejuvenate in shaded spots and air-conditioned comfort all throughout downtown. One of the best bets for cooling o is to stop by one of the glitzy casinos that are open during the day where you can also try your luck at the same time. Who knows? Maybe you will win big and increase your retail therapy budget for some more shopping later! You’ll find the Wind Creek Crystal Casino above the Renaissance Mall and the Wind Creek Seaport Casino across from the Renaissance Marketplace on the marina. It’s the only waterfront casino on the island. The entire island comes out to play downtown during carnival season. Though some events are held in other regions like San Nicolas, the Grand Parade that finalizes the colorful celebration is always held in Oranjestad. If you are here during carnival time, check the calendar of events so you don’t miss the parades and pageants here: www.myarubaguide.com/blogs/event-calendar.But whenever you’re on holiday here, do plan an incredible downtown day in Oranjestad. 98 | my aruba guideThe opportunity to interact with colorful tropical fish and resplendent reef creatures draws many marine life lovers here each year. So, let’s discover where to go and what’s waiting below all around One Happy Island. Aruba’s waters host hundreds of species of fish. Fortunately, most of the marine life worth seeking out is close to shore. You need not take lengthy boat trips to see tropical fish here as you must in many other islands. But before we tell you where to go, let’s get to know some of our fishy friends a little better. Name That Fish …It’s good to know the names of what you’ve encountered under the waves to tell good “fish stories” once you surface. Some are obvious like ‘hogfish’ who has a pig-like snout, or ‘needlefish’ with its long, thin silver body, while othersmight be more puzzling like ‘grunts.’ (They make grunting sounds). Then there’s the trunk fish named for its square-shaped body, and the queen angelfish is identifiable by a crown marking on its head. “Tangs” get their name from the sword blade curve of their tail, while sergeant majors are defined by their military “stripes”. But the most popular star of the underwater world must be the parrotfish, and it’s named for its bird-like beak.Fish Storyby Susan CampbellGOURMET

Page 101

my aruba guide | 99A Fascinating Fish Fact...Parrotfish are common here, and they are loved for their stunning neon colors. They are great reef cleaners, too! But did you know that much of the white sand of our beaches is parrotfish poop? Parrotfish are equipped with an extra set of teeth in their throat that grinds hard coral into fine particles of sand. It’s estimated that one average-sized parrotfish can produce 1,000 lbs. of sand per year. And better yet, they always seem to be smiling! Where to Find Our Underwater Treasures…You won’t find many fish in the sandy bottoms of our most popular beaches. Marine life seeks out structures with nooks and crannies to hide in and to make their homes. Generally, where there are rocks and reefs there are fish, and they also like to inhabit the roots of mangrove forests. But they also love wrecks! Aruba has over a dozen wreck sites ideal for certified divers, but some are accessible for snorkelers, too. The most famous one is the S.S. Antilla just oshore in shallow water. Most of the snorkel/party boats go there, and they also stop at Boca Catalina and Malmok just north of Palm Beach as both coves are chock full of marine life. (Including sea turtles!) Furthermore, both these spots are also accessible from land, as is Tres Tapi nearby. This tiny cove is famous for its abundance of starfish lining the bottom. And further north is Arashi Beach that has a small reef that oers good snorkeling, too. Mangel Halto’s beach is also an awesome fish-spotting area, and there’s a small sunken wreck there also accessible for snorkelers. This is also a favored entrance for shore diving. And Baby Beach near San Nicolas is the perfect place for small children to don a snorkel mask for the first time as the waves are calm. (You oen spot sea turtles there, too). The Lamentable Plight of the LionshYou’ll encounter scads of fascinating sea creatures here including rays, eels, crabs, and even those funny flying fish that glide over the waves. But one fish you don’t want to meet up with is a lionfish! This invasive species is a danger to the reefs, and to humans, too. They have 18 toxic stingers, so keep your distance! However, there are projects on the island designed to eradicate them including the “Eat ‘em to beat em” drive that encourages local chefs to put them on their menus. Their meat is white and flaky, and they can be delicious. Also look for beautiful jewelry made from lionfish skin at the arts and cras markets. They make ideal authentic locally made souvenirs and some proceeds go to reef care, too. Visit Aruba Lionfish Initiative Foundation for more: www.facebook.com/ArubaLionFish Catch Me If You Can!Aruba’s waters just a few miles o the coast are a great big playground for sport fishers. Big game fish such as Albacore Tuna, Atlantic Sailfish, Blue Marlin, Bull Shark, Great Barracuda, King Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, White Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, and every kind of grouper including Goliaths, are all out there waiting for you to try your skills. And there are many excellent outfits eager to take you out to try and catch them with full and half-day outings on professionally equipped boats. And some will even cook your catch for dinner that night! •Driwood Charters

114 | my aruba guideArepas with a Twist Combine the cornmeal, water, oil, cilantro, jalapeño and salt in a bowl. Knead until it forms a so, pliable, non-sticky dough. Add a little more water if it cracks when you fold it. Wrap in cling film and let rest for 10 minutes. Divide the dough into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and press down into a flat disk with the palm of your hand. Warm a generous layer of oil in a frying pan over medium heat and fry the arepas on both sides until crispy and lightly browned, about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towel.Heat a griddle pan or barbecue. Carefully slice open each arepa to form a pita-like pocket and stu them with mozzarella. Grill the arepas on both sides until they sound hollow when tapped, about 3 to 4 minutes on each side, and the mozzarella has melted. Serve warm with hotsauce. •Serves 4• 2 cups (250g) precooked white or yellow cornmeal*• 2 cups (500ml) water• 1 tablespoon coconut oil• 2 tablespoons cilantro, finely chopped• 2 tablespoons jalapeño, finely chopped• 1 teaspoon salt• 2 cups (200g) shredded mozzarellaextra: vegetable oil for frying* When making arepas, it’s important to use the special precooked variety ofcornmeal such as Hariña PAN.This is a recipe from the book “Island Vibes the Joy of Caribbean Cooking” by Curaçao chef Helmi Smeulders. Available at local bookstores and online via: www.helmismeulders.com/shopArepas are delicious little hot pockets made with creamy cornmeal and stued with goodness. They are especially popular in neighboring countries like Venezuela and Colombia, where they are served for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Depending on the time of the day, the filling varies from scrambled eggs, to chicken, tuna or pulled pork. You can order them at some of our local foodtrucks or simply make your own. This recipe is one of my personal favorites: flavorful snack-time arepas stued with creamy melted mozzarella.RECIPE

Originally from England, he earned his Professional Chef Diploma at Kingsway College in 2001, and began his career at The Sheraton Grand, London Park. He worked his way up to hold prestigious positions throughout England and Australia until finally landing in the Middle East where he worked as Banquet Chef for The St. Regis Doha, Executive Chef at Marriott Doha Hotel Qatar, and executive chef for The St. Regis Abu Dhabi. Now charged with overseeing operations for an eclectic section of top-notch dining venues including BLT Steak and Casa Nonna New York and ensuring the high standards of The Ritz-Carlton brand are always met, he looks forward to getting to know his new island home better, making new friends, and enjoying the beautiful beaches.Brooke Van TolBartender/Mixologist Quinta del CarmenBorn in Holland to a Dutch father and Aruban mother, Brooke spent her formative years between the two. She had studied nursing but didn’t feel it was the right fit, and when by chance, she took a job as a hostess for a party bus here, she knew she’d found her niche. Though she professed to be “the shyest person ever” at the time, it turns out that entertaining people came naturally. Her bubbly demeanor then scored her a cocktail waitress position at a major resort, but she soon became more interested in the bar part of the business, so she made it her business to learn the art of mixology. Today, she’s considered one of Aruba’s most creative barkeeps. You don’t need a dinner reservation to try one of her signature “Team Orange” cocktails and see why. In fact, Brooke has been asked to create original drink recipes for many establishments over her nine years in the industry now. GOURMET

118 | my aruba guideMike FrankHead Chef Saliña Local CuisineOriginally from the Czech Republic, Chef Mike moved here over 20 years ago and fell in love with authentic Aruban cuisine. Aer graduating from culinary school and completing an internship at a five-star resort, Mike decided he wanted to use his talents at an establishment where he could create meals that would infuse local flavors with international flair. He has now taken the helm as head chef at the Saliña Restaurant Where his favorite theme evening has become “Taste of History in Aruba’s Kitchen”. On those nights guests experience the flavors of five dierent Aruban traditional dishes and learn how they became part of the local culture. On his time o, when he’s not traveling the world to glean more culinary knowledge, the chef likes to play tennis or work out at the gym. But his favorite pastime here is fishing and coming up with creative ways to prepare his catch. Chef Olivier FalchiExecutive Chef Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & CasinoOriginally from France, and having worked across Europe, South America, French Polynesia, and the Caribbean over the past 33 years, Chef Olivier settled in Aruba three years ago with a very impressive pedigree. His multiple awards are far too numerous to mention here but include the winner of “Gourmand Best in the World” for his very first cookbook. And one of his award-winning menus was served at every Argentinian embassy all over the world for a year! Though he worked his way up from small beginnings as a dishwasher to graduating from the French Culinary School with a Diploma of Honor, Olivier credits his love for cooking to his family where they always insisted on using fresh ingredients and eating together at home. And his culinary philosophy is simple: ensure the customer’s happiness. If there’s a special request and he has the products to fulfill it, he will always do so. GOURMET

Many people oen ask if The Dutch Pancake House also serves “real food”. Not many people know that they have some delicious dinner options available. Did you know that it is impossible to imagine a Dutch kitchen without schnitzels? If you have tried one, your answer will definitely be YES. Schnitzels are a dinner specialty of The Dutch Pancake House. They serve a variety of schnitzels; juicy chicken breast, tender pork loin or grouper.Schnitzels and Cordon Bleus are served with salad, fresh fruit and your choice of home style potatoes, rice, or French fries. 142 | my aruba guidePrenuptial Party Ideas by Susan CampbellAruba is ideal for bachelor or bachelorette parties, and mixed stags, too. There are many cool and unique things to do as a group to celebrate the betrothed in high style before the big day. “Bach parties” as they are more commonly called these days, have become less wild, booze-fueled soirees and more about spending special time with your best buddies before the big day.Florida native Julianna Hansen, an account executive that represents Amsterdam Manor, completely agrees that “bach parties” have totally evolved. She had her bachelorette shindig here last year with 17 girlfriends. She says, “I was so excited to show my friends everything I love about this island, none had been here before. But I also wanted my celebration to reflect that we are far more than ‘girlie girls’. Yes, we loved the fancy champagne snorkel boat brunch and dreamy toes-in-the-sand sunset dinner at Passions on the Beach, yet we alsohad an absolute blast with a private pizza pool party, we hit the pier bars for local food, and buckets of beer, and went o-roading through the wild, rugged outback on ATVs. It was not your grandmother’s bachelorette party!”However, girls will be girls, and boys will be boys, and there are some pastimes that each gender typically leans more toward when seeking a bonding-by-party trip. For the girls…“Pamper parties” are trending, so, how about gathering your gal pals for a champagne-fueled mani-pedi party. Or book massages and facials, then gather aerward in the water circuit area for some serious de-stressing together. Champagne brunching is big too (endless mimosas anyone?). This island has far more than your typical Sunday buet oerings. You’ll find a la carte Saturday brunches, even night brunches, and some are served right in a pool or even aboard a boat.“Girls Gone Green” is another trend, females focusing on pastimes good for the health of our planet. From private yoga and fitness classes for groups, to Pilates on paddle board, to nature hikes and sea kayaking outings, Aruba has it all. But of course, girls do love to strap on the stilettos and dress to impress for a “Ladies’ Night” out on the town. Exploring the island by hiking, or mountain biking, or even on a Harley guided tour are also ideas, or a day out at watching drag racing at Palo Marga International Raceway Park or driving go karts on a professional track will also satisfy that masculine drive.Pre-wedding fun starts!’NIGHTBEATLuxury Flying Dress

But how about some activities unique to this island? Learning beach tennis or blokarting (land sailing) or taking turns doing tandem skydives from 1,000 . above are a few. And karaoke and sing-along bars are bach party’s best friends. But how about getting your group some private dancing lessons- like salsa, bachata, or kizomba before they hit the town to set the dance floors on fire? All doable here. And Aruba has a great group of professional photographers ready to document your special event, too. Foodie groups will delight in the options here as well. A dozen chef’s tables can accommodate private groups, or how about a progressive dinner via a walking tour of downtown? Or how about a vineyard tour or a local distillery tour with samples galore? Need a rainy-day plan B? Gloria cinemas has VIP sections you can reserve for IMAX first-run movies. Or there are always the glitzy casinos, and some are open 24/7! In the heart of Aruba’s party scene, a visit to The Oice is an absolute must. No adult celebration of any kind would be complete to a visit to this iconic and electric nightclub for hot music, laser lights, and VIP service. Another essential stop is Saloon Aruba, it’s the island’s only country bar! Head on in for free shots, karaoke, dancing on the bar, Texas-sized drinks, live music, and wild, wild west, style partying for all!Plan Swag Bags AheadSome of Aruba’s shops like The Juggling Fish and The Lazy Lizard will stamp the name of your event theme on handy items like beach bags, drink koozies, and personalized attire if you order ahead. And who knows? If you plan your celebration right, your group might want this type of get-together to become an annual thing without the “bach party” theme attached. Aer all, there’s no place like Aruba for unique holiday fun with your buddies! •The OiceBodegas Papiamento

Most importantly, we want you to feel you are coming home, and feel safe, heard and happy throughout your visit. It is so much you do or can still do that contributes to our island. Our 'my promise' campaign is providing you with the opportunity to be part of our community and, better yet, support, protect, preserve and advocate for the environment, wild- & marine life, as well as our cultural heritage in order to have our future generations enjoy what we experience today. As we welcome you home we would like to remind you that, while you explore and enjoy our island, to remember the importance of our values and accordingly practice empathy, understanding and respect for our basic do's and don'ts. A small act of kindness has so much impact here on our island. Want to learn more about how you can be part of our 'my promise' campaign? Visit: www.aruba.com/mypromise and answer that one particular question: what will be your promise to Aruba? When you share your promise with us, you may choose a background that best suits your personality and downloads it as a remembrance/souvenir & take part in our movement #arubapromise.INFORMATION

176 | my aruba guideSammy & Raj seemed to be blessed with good fortunes as they were able to secure a new location in the Hotel Zone, right on the main hotel strip across from the Barcelo Hotel. The presence of Royal Jewels & Diamonds right in the thick of the action has changed their business model considerably. Now, the continued pedestrian traic, as well as the closeness to the high-rise hotels, has brought a more convenient place of business where Raj says, “We now see a greater volume of store traic almost daily. People love the proximity and I love welcoming all our loyal, returning clients and meeting so many new people as well.” But it isn’t only the address change that’s new. Sammy and Raj have just welcomed in Krish, their 24-year-old Barcelona & Holland educated son, thrilled at the idea of making his mark in the store and the world. As we watch our children grow into maturity and adulthood it’s every parent’s dream to see how they will turn out and, in some cases, it just seems to fit their DNA to move into the family business. Krish seems totally up to the challenge. Not only is this new generation of new ideas and fresh energy inspiring everyone, but Krish’s talent is steeped in design whereby he transforms clients’ old jewelry into modern, contemporary designs so that they can be produced within days of their vacation. From sketch to fruition, a truly unique skill that has both Mom & Dad beaming with pride. With continued humility both Sammy and Raj stand back and see how destiny has taken them forward and never for a moment take for granted the wonderful opportunities that have been bestowed upon them, their family, and their Royal Jewelry Store clientele.www.royaljewelers.net+297 280-4990Royal Jewels & Diamonds Generational PrideTW
