N O M A D I C | 2 4CARNIVAL JUBILEEC A T C H S O M E W A V E S O N T H EFor most of my life, Hawaii seemed too far away tovisit, too expensive, too many hours in a confinedstate (an airplane) to get there. In my mind, too plustoo, plus too, equalled No! However, opportunity and nudging from family andfriends finally convinced me the reward was goingto be worth the anxiety and physical restrictionsthat had for so long kept Hawaii off my to-do list. Sorecently my wife and I bit the bullet and visited theAloha State for our first -- and, we thought, only --time. I am happy to report that I not only survived, Iprospered. I didn't just like it, I loved it. Here are a couple of reasons, in no particular order, why I loved Hawaii, a list that I hope will serve asinspiration for all of you procrastinators -- and bringback pleasant memories for those of you who havealready been. I must start off with the Volcanoes. Since the islandsowe their very existence to volcanic activity, omitting them would be a shame. The Kilauea volcano has been enlarging the BigIsland almost continuously for years and eachyear it has been expanding the Island by almost40 feet. One of the reasons people come toHawaii is for the beaches. Hawaii has beacheswith different colour sand such as green, red, pink, and even black sand. The differing sandcolours are all attributed to the volcanic activityon the Island. We went to a black sand beachon the Big Island and let me tell you thecontrast of the Azul Blue Ocean and thecrashing white waves left you in awe of thebeauty you will not see on other beaches. Thesame beach also had a few hot springs heatedby the volcanoes. We enjoyed a perfect 102degrees and stayed there till the stars came out.Listening to the waves crashing on the shore, looking at the amazing stars in the hot springswas magical. www.makingtravelpay.com | 17hAWAII bABY!

Page 20

Let's face it, the beaches are one of the firstimages you think of when Hawaii is mentioned. They are the famous: Waikiki, North Shore,Hanalei Bay, Poipu, Sunset and Ka'anapali aresome of the beaches you have heard about, readabout or seen in movies, on TV and in travelmagazines. But did you know the Big Island known asHawaii, you can find hot, arid desert on thenorthwest coast, tropical rainforests on the eastand an arctic polar environment in the middleon the summits of Mauna Loa. In between, thereis a grand mixture of wet tropical rain forest todry and warm and cool. Standing in your shortson the white-, green- or black-sand beaches, it ispossible to see the snow-capped volcanic peaksonly about an hour away. Parts of Hawaii get a lot of rain -- almost everyday. The rainiest areas generally are on theeastern sides of the islands, except Kauai wherethe heaviest concentration is somewhatcentralized. The rain is important for the lushgrowth, the spectacular rainbows and for themagnificent waterfalls. The Big Island of Hawaii, Maui and Kauai havethe most famous falls with some easilyaccessible and some so remote they can only beseen with a helicopter or an extensive hike. Some gracefully cascade hundreds of feet downsheer cliffs and others roar over 20- to 80-footdrops. Any visit to Hawaii will surely includeseveral waterfall experiences that you willcategorize as trip highlights. Before we went, this mainlander thought Hawaiimust have something going for it if so manypeople make the trek, but it actually haseverything going for it. It opened my eyes to thevariety these Islands offer. We were able to swimwith turtles, go whale watching, chasewaterfalls, swim with Manta Rays, snorkel withthe coral reefs, Climb a volcano, and so muchmore. No matter what you decide to do, just sitback enjoy the rainbows, the warm breeze onyour creeks, and the sunsets. After my first visit, Ihope to be lucky enough to return one day.www.makingtravelpay.com | 18hAWAII bABY!

ChinaWelcome to the wondrous China, where you can enjoyBreathtaking Landscapes. Incredible history, food, andculture.I'd suggest Autumn and Spring are unarguably the besttime to visit China, as the temperatures are comfortableand the weather is delightful with the onset of winter andoffset of summer either side. Don't let that put you offvisiting in Summer and Winter if you have no issues withthe scorching and freezing temperatures.Make sure you visit Beijing and the Great Wall. Here are a few interesting facts.. 1. Beijing, capital of China, is the most popular touristdestination in China. 2. The Terracotta Warriors were found by farmers.3. The Great Wall of China is actually a collection of walls.4. Tiananmen Square contains the Mausoleum of MaoZedong.5.Chinese food varies greatly from region to region. 6. Forbidden City is the biggest imperial palace in theworld. 7. Yangtze River is the longest river in AsiaAncient China was a land of invention.Did you know, for centuries, China was way ahead of mostother countries in science and technology, astronomy, andmath! The Chinese invented paper, the magnetic compass, printing, porcelain, silk, and gunpowder, among otherthings.Food.. With ingredients that are ultra-fresh, tastes more subtleand complex. And, the diversity is staggering: most of theChinese food you find in the West cones from theCantonese school of cooking (such as sweet and sourdishes,(my childhood fave) and dim sum). In China, you’re exposed to a whole array of regionalcuisines, from fragrantly spiced Sichuan dishes toShanghainese xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) containing arich, meaty broth. Now, I’d be lying if I said China doesn’t have dishes which,to Western eyes, can make you high brow. For example,Offal of all kinds, are widely eaten. Feeling adventurous?(scorpions on a lolly pop anyone?), there are also lots ofeveryday dishes that are appealing. Alongside the moreout there for some western pallets , you’ll find a hugerange of dumplings, noodles, soups, hotpots, succulentbraised and barbecued meats, fish stews, tofu and beancurd, and plates of steamed or lightly stir-fried vegetables.A taste sensation! My mouths watering now! www.makingtravelpay.com | 33

The trick is to try to stay as open-minded as you can, someexamples of food in China, to start your journey on.. Kung Pao Chicken, Sweet and Sour Pork, Peking RoastDuck, Mapo Tofu, Chow Mein, Chinese Hot Pot, Spring Rolls,Wonton Soup.More reasons to visit China... Explore 5,000 Years of History and Multiple Cultures. Meet Kind and Warm-Hearted Chinese People. Discover Diverse Minority People and Customs. A Luxurious Trip or Budget-Friendly Travel.Amazing tips for your trip.. Apply for your Chinese visa as early as possible!Unless you’re from Singapore, Brunei or Japan, you need avisa to stay in China for more than 72 hours. Contact yourlocal Chinese consulate or use a third-party visa company forgreater ease (and higher fees). The process for obtaining atourist visa differs from country to country, but you shouldplan on it taking up to a month.Online tips.. You’ll need a Virtual Private Network to visit many websitesDownloading a VPN before you travel will allow you tobypass China’s so-called Great Firewall, which blocks Google,Facebook, and Twitter. Astrill VPN is popular among expats. When in China, carry cash…With the emergence of mobile payment methods such asAlipay, WeChat Wallet and even Apple Pay – most of whichmust be linked to a local bank card – China’s economy is nolonger so reliant on cash. That said, cash is still acceptedeverywhere and you’ll be able to withdraw it from ATMsusing foreign bank cards.China prides itself on an efficient, clean and increasingly high-tech public transport service. The high-speed intercity trains, for example, are a dream totravel on, while the subway systems in Beijing, Shanghai andHong Kong are convenient and user-friendly. On both thesubway and intercity trains, you’ll always have to put yourbelongings through an airport-style scanner before goingdown to the tracks. It’s also worth pointing out that lots of other aspects of life inChina are refreshingly straightforward. In the cities, you’llfind ATMs everywhere, and it’s easy to change currency.Credit cards, however, are less commonly used: always carrycash. For the time being, cash remains king There’s no need to tip in ChinaTipping culture simply doesn’t exist in China. Some of thereally nice restaurants in the big cities may include gratuityon the bill but leaving cash tips on the table is not the donething.www.makingtravelpay.com | 34China

Don’t drink Chinese tap waterLocals don’t drink it and neither should you: tap water in Chinatends to contain an unhealthy level of heavy-metal particles.Using a bit to wet your toothbrush is fine, but don’t startguzzling the stuff. Bottled water is cheap. Chinese tap water isfine for brushing your teeth but nothing more Be cautious when buying alcohol in China.Beer and wine are generally safe anywhere you go in China, but exercise caution when it comes to buying spirits in barsand clubs: a cheap brand – or even moonshine – may havebeen poured into an expensive-looking bottle.Haggle at Chinese markets but not in shops Some people will tell you that you should haggle everywherein China, but this just isn’t true. Haggling is encouraged (andoften necessary) in the markets that abound in Chinese citiesbut it’s rude to do the same in a brick-and-mortar shop whereitems have price tags.Haggling is accepted, even encouraged, at Chinese markets;the same isn’t true for shops. Bring toilet paper and hand sanitiser. While your hotel will have a Western-style toilet, squattypotties are still the norm in China, and most bathrooms don’thave toilet paper or soap.Belt it in Chinese taxis Wearing a seat belt is still not common practice in China, however chaotic the traffic gets. The buckle may be burieddeep in the cushions but be sure to dig it out – even if yourdriver starts accusing you of questioning their prowess behindthe wheel.Carry a photocopy of your passport and visa info everywhere!Chinese hotels are required by law to register guests with thepolice, and they will need your passport in order to do so. It isalso possible (though not common) for a police officer to stopyou in the street and ask for your identification.Get ready to feel like a celebrity in China. Even with millions of international visitors every year, China isstill fascinated by a foreign face and people may ask to havetheir photo taken with you. Though it’s no longer common inShanghai, be prepared to say qiezi! – which literally translatesas ‘aubergine!’ but is used thanks to its similarity to the English‘cheese!’ – and flash your best peace sign when locals in otherparts of the country request that you take a starring role intheir latest WeChat moment.Enjoy, have fun, be open minded and have a trip of a lifetime!www.makingtravelpay.com | 35China

Made from high quality Makranamarble and adorned internally with intricatemosaics and semi-precious stones and gems. This mausoleum will forever occupy a specialplace in your heart.3.The Glitz and GlamourIt’s mere presence as a backdrop is the reasonit has appeared in many movies acrossHollywood and India; however, itsrepresentation of luxury is what has drawn somany well-known people to visit – such as,Leonardo DiCaprio, Princess Diana, Tom Cruise,Oprah Winfrey and many more.4.One of Wonders of the WorldThe Taj Mahal, also known as ‘The Jewel of MuslimArt in India’ is a universally admired masterpiece ofWorld Heritage and it is this that landed it a placeas a UNESCO world heritage site, and one of theSeven Wonders of the World.5.Love!Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal to honourhis love for his second wife who died giving birth totheir 14th child in 1631. Every brick, every gem, everypiece was for his wife and a representation of howdeeply he felt for her. It is for this reason that manycouples and honeymooners visit the site as atestament of their own love story and theircommitment to one another.www.makingtravelpay.com | 42

The besttime to visit is early around 6.30am when crowdsare fewer, temperatures cooler and there will benice lighting for pictures as the sun rises.3) Choose your gate wisely! East and West arebetter and less crowded than the South which isalso positioned in front of a busy market with lotsof touts.4) Be prepared to be separated if travelling as acouple as there are separate queues for menand women.5) Have the exact money ready for your ticket.Ticket prices are 1,000 rupees per person forforeigners and include water, shoe covers and amap.6) Dress appropriately.
