Paul came to us nearly two years ago in crisis. His health was declining, hecouldn’t work, and he wasn’t yet receiving disability. His housing wasunsafe, and he lacked basic necessities. When he arrived, seeking food, hehadn’t had a real meal in over two weeks. His only source of comfort washis beloved cats, whom he struggled to care for. Before long, he washospitalized for several weeks, needing critical care.As we got to know Paul, we discovered the root causes of his instability.Paul’s childhood was a story of generational trauma. His grandmother, whoraised him and his siblings, was a hard worker, but he endured significantabuse in her home. As an adult, he needed more than food, shelter, andhealthcare—he needed to be seen, heard, and loved. He neededcommunity.Today, Paul’s life looks very different. He completed our Getting Aheadprogram, gaining access to vital resources and support. He now receivesdisability and food assistance, has a wonderful healthcare provider, and issurrounded by a caring community. He also has a home in our new Cooperative CommunityLiving program, where he shares not just expenses but friendship and mutual support with two fellow Getting Ahead graduates. Together, they’re about to embark on a journey of healthy living through our Food Pharmacyprogram.Paul’s transformation is a testament tothe power of a caring community.
