8 Michigan Seniors Guide • Fall 2024by Brian Christopher Retirement. Ah, yes! After a long career full of years spent toiling to earn a living, cobble together a nestegg and buy all the things you need or make you happy, it’s time to relax and let your retirement savings and Social Security do its stuff. But wait. Refining your strategy for deploying those resources is certainly worthy of your time and consideration. And patience is a virtue — one that could pay off with in the long run through bigger checks every month. “If they go on early Social Security at 62, they’re going to take a 30% reduction in Social Security benefits, and that’s permanent,” said Art Reaume, the owner of Reaume Benefits Advisors/Medicare Choices. “You can go for your full Social Security when you reach that age bracket. If they opt not to take Social Security then, once in a while people do, I believe it’s (up to) 8% they get for not going on it for that time.” By age 70, the experts say you’re maxed out. There’s no benefit in delaying it any longer. But there are things you can do before that to beef-up your benefit amount. According to the Social Security Administration, benefits are based on “your lifetime earnings,” adjusted for “changes in average wages since the year the earnings were received.” The average of these adjusted earnings is calculated for your 35 highest earning years. Working for at least 35 years is one way to make sure you get the most out of Social Security. You only need to work 10 years to qualify for benefits, having fewer than 35 years of work at the time you apply can lower your benefit amount because, according to the Social Security Administration, “Years with no earnings count as zeroes in the benefit calculation.” Your maximum benefit depends on the age you retire, according to the government’s response to a “frequently asked question” posted on SSA.gov in January 2024. Those who retire at their calculated full retirement age in 2024 are eligible to receive a maximum benefit of $3,822. Those who retire early at age 62 are eligible for a maximum benefit of $2,710. Those who delay drawing benefits until the ripe old age of 70 are eligible for a maximum monthly benefit of $4,873. Again, those are maximum numbers, and individual calculations are based on lifetime earnings. Social Security has historically offered automatic cost-of-living adjustments “to ensure that the purchasing power of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits is not eroded by inflation,” according to SSA.gov. COLAs are based on the percentage increase in the consumer price index for urban wage and clerical workers for the third quarter of the last year the previous adjustment was determined to the third quarter of the current year. No increase means no COLA. Given the recent rise in inflation, a 3.2% adjustment was made payable through benefits beginning in January 2024. Given the direct impact of Social Security on the retirement picture and standard of living for millions of Americans, the importance of maximizing these benefits — and others — cannot be understated. By law, employees of the Social Security Administration are not allowed to give advice. Instead, consult with a benefits planner or a financial advisor to ensure your retirement income, health benefits and savings are in order. The offices of Reaume Benefits Advisors/Medicare Choices are located at 8070 21 Mile Road in Shelby Township, and 312 Superior Mall in Port Huron. To set up a consultation or for more information, call (586) 204-2088. What to expect when you’re expecting your Social SecurityStrategies to heed for maximizing your benefit payments

12 Michigan Seniors Guide • Fall 2024by Brian Christopher There’s a time and a place for everything and every type of travel experience. Going solo on a trip to Europe or alone on an Alaskan cruise is a good fit for young couples or individual travelers with wanderlust. But for those looking to see the sights, savor the essence of strange lands and truly experience foreign cities are best served to go with a group led by a professional. Erik Hall, the owner/operator of Noble Frog Tours, spent more than 30 years working with a professor at Macomb Community College to coordinate trips to London. Hall also worked for a bus company to coordinate group trips around the state, and he worked in AAA’s group travel division for six states in the Midwest. “Wherever you go, do some research about the area, especially if you have some time on your own,” Hall said. “No matter where you go, (the time) it just flies by. It doesn’t stand still for anything, and you can never do everything you want to do. You’ll see it, but you won’t experience it. I think that’s important with travel — the experience.” This summer, Hall took a group of 21 travelers over age 50 to London where he shared much of what he’s learned about the city over the years. Every tour is as unique as every group of travelers, but Hall said he has found success by building an experience that provides a framework with some must-see highlights and off-the-beaten-path spots interspersed with optional to explore individual pursuits. Hall founded Noble Frog Tours after the professor he worked with all those years retired during the COVID-19 period. Hall took a trip with the professor back in 1986 and eventually started working with the professor to host the tours. Noble Frog has two more London tours planned for 2025: one in May, and one around Christmastime in December. “I guess I would say it’s a really smart way to go,” said Dina Spoerl, 51, who grew up in Detroit but now lives in Winnetka, Illinois, just north of Chicago. “I don’t know what all group tours are like, but as far as this trip is concerned, you have your own space and time to do the things you want to do. It’s not so structured. A group trip of this nature is really good because all of the hard stuff is taken care of. All you have to do is enjoy what the presentations are, and enjoy the structured things, and then have the opportunity to do stuff yourself as well. It’s a real comfort-level situation.” Leslie Tolstyka, 63, of Warren, Michigan, has traveled with Hall and the group from MCC many times. “He’s a great communicator. He’s very knowledgeable. When we’re walking around, he’s got a lot of information about the area and certain things around the London area, inside and outside of London.” Guided tours outshine solo adventures, deliver enriched experiences

Page 13

Michigan Seniors Guide • Fall 2024 13Tolstyka said touring with a diverse group of people adds to the experience. “I think your best bet is to go with a group. People come from all over the place, socioeconomic statuses, educational levels. You just kind of join up and go and do some other things, in addition to the things that are planned,” Tolstyka said. Going with an expert tour leader is critical for those looking to make the most out of their time abroad. “If you try to go by yourself or with your family, they’re not as knowledgeable of the things you want to do. There’s so many other things that are more interesting when you’re with a group,” Tolstyka said. Regardless of the group, its size or destination, Hall, who just turned 56, said there are many things for seniors to consider when planning a trip abroad. “Europe is definitely a good place for seniors to go,” Hall said. “The only drawback as I see it is Europe is an old place. A lot of places are protected. There are a lot of uneven walkways. That’s one of the things I’ve found over the years, and getting older myself, you could probably twist an ankle fairly easily if you’re not looking out.” He said cruises are also great touring destinations for seniors because you can really go at your own pace when the ship sets sail and docks in port. “You don’t need to pack and unpack, like if you were on a tour somewhere. The cruise ships take you where you want to go, and you’re seeing multiple destinations. I would recommend that an Alaskan cruise would be the way to go,” Hall said. Travel insurance is something Hall said he recommends to protect yourself and your investment in a travel experience. “Most health insurance doesn’t carry over outside of the U.S. Travel insurance helps cover that,” Hall said. “If you need medical treatment for something relatively small, or you could get hit by a bus, it’s horrible. (Insurance) costs money, but it’s some security that you’ll have.” Hall said traveling with a companion not only adds a level of security, but it gives you someone with whom to share memories that will last a lifetime. “It’s always good to have someone you can rely on to travel with,” Hall said. “It makes it more enjoyable. Here are a few more tips for those in their golden years interested in touring with Noble Frog, or any group headed for adventure abroad: • Stay hydrated. “Hydration is a big thing, especially as you get older,” Hall said. “Planes will dry you out. Traveling will just dry you out, especially if you’re on a bus. Bring a thermos with you. Even if you can’t take liquid on the plane, at least bring the container with you so you can fill it up later and stay hydrated.” • Be in the time zone you’re in. “Try to get to whatever time zone you might be in. When I go to Europe, I fly overnight, but it’s usually only a seven-hour flight. If you can, try to sleep, even if it’s just a hard nap. And then, when you check in, take a nap for an hour or two, go out, get dinner, and try to stay up until your normal time,” Hall said. “Don’t look at the clock and say, ‘Oh, it’s 5 o’clock here, back home it’s noon.’ You need to have your body realize this is where you’re at. This is the time zone you’re in.” • Check about vaccinations, prepare your prescriptions. “There are some places you need to take vaccinations for. It’s best to do some research on your own. Definitely check with your doctor, or a pharmacist. They’ll be on top of that for you, too. Sometimes, there are things you need to do a few months in advance,” Hall said. “(For prescriptions) they recommend you take your medication in the bottle with the label on it. You may want to have the bottles with you. Ask your pharmacist for a smaller bottle. Some people don’t want to have it in a carry-on, but luggage gets lost all the time. You’ve got to keep that in mind.” To learn more about Noble Frog Tours, call Erik Hall at (586) 551-0448, email him at noblefrogtours@gmail.com or go to noblefrogtours.com. Every tour is as unique as every group of travelers

14 Michigan Seniors Guide • Fall 2024What is Medicare? Medicare is the federal health insurance program for: • People who are 65 or older • Certain younger people with disabilities • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, ESRD) What are the parts of Medicare? The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services: • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) Part B covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. • Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines). How does Medicare work? With Medicare, you have options in how you get your coverage. Once you enroll, you’ll need to decide how you’ll get your Medicare coverage. There are 2 main ways: • Original Medicare Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance). You pay for services as you get them. When you get services, you’ll pay a deductible at the start of each year, and you usually pay 20% of the cost of the Medicare-approved service, called coinsurance. If you want drug coverage, you can add a separate drug plan (Part D). Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy can help pay some of the remaining health care costs, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Some Medigap policies also cover services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. • Medicare Advantage Medicare Advantage is an “all in one” alternative to Original Medicare. These “bundled” plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D. Most plans offer extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover — like vision, hearing, dental, and more. Medicare Advantage Plans have yearly contracts with Medicare and must follow Medicare’s coverage rules. The plan must notify you about any changes before the start of the next enrollment year. • Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) Medicare drug coverage helps pay for prescription drugs you need. To get Medicare drug coverage, you must join a Medicare-approved plan that offers drug coverage (this includes Medicare drug plans and Medicare Advantage Plans with drug coverage). Each plan can vary in cost and specific drugs covered, but must give at least a standard level of coverage set by Medicare. Medicare drug coverage includes generic and brand-name drugs. Plans can vary the list of prescription drugs they cover (called a formulary) and how they place drugs into different "tiers" on their formularies. Plans have different monthly premiums. You’ll also have other costs throughout the year in a Medicare drug plan. How much you pay for each drug depends on which plan you choose. Important Medicare Dates To Remember... October 1st Start comparing your current coverage with other options. You may be able to save money or get extra benefits. Visit Medicare.gov/plan-compare. October 15th - December 7th Change your Medicare health or drug coverage for 2025, if you decide to. This includes changing to Original Medicare, or joining or changing a Medicare Advantage Plan. January 1st New coverage begins if you made a change. If you kept your existing coverage and your plan's costs or benefits changed, those changes also start on this date. January 1st - March 31st If you're in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can change to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or switch to Original Medicare (and join a separate Medicare drug plan) once during this time. Any changes you make will be effective the first of the month after the plan gets your request.YOUR GUIDE TO MEDICARE IN MICHIGAN DO YOU HAVE MORE QUESTIONS? Whether you’re ready to enroll in Medicare for the first time or have had Medicare coverage for years, Michigan’s Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program – MMAP – is here to help. MMAP is a free, unbiased service, not connected with any insurance company, that helps you understand your Medicare benefits. Working through the Area Agencies on Aging statewide, MMAP is also part of a nationwide network called the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) – a primary resource for personalized Medicare counseling throughout the country. 18 Michigan Seniors Guide • Fall 2024DNEM’s RecConnect offers adaptive recreation programs for people of all ages with disabilities. Recreational therapy promotes independent living by providing education and opportunities that revolve around social, emotional, and physical programming. The program began several years ago with a smaller focus on inclusive arts, crafts and cooking classes. RecConnect now includes wellness programs, music classes, therapeutic exercises and adaptive sports including golf, kayaking and cycling. The program is offered to residents of Huron, Lapeer, Macomb, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair and Tuscola counties who have a disability. RecConnect has grown under the leadership Carrie Gerdeman who is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and serves as DNEM’s Recreation & Health Services Director. She proudly boasts “this past year we had more than 750 people participate in one or more of our adaptive and inclusive programs. More than 90 people participated in Adaptive Kayaking”. DNEM hosts kayaking clinics for people with disabilities by providing individualized trained instructors, uniquely modified kayaks that are a little wider and might include outriggers to increase stability on the water as well as specialized adaptive equipment that helps support the weight of the paddle. “Initially, when people show up they might be a little nervous. Maybe they've never participated in kayaking or maybe they've never taken an art class before. But as soon as they see the amount of support and guidance we provide, they are so excited and most sign up for additional programs.” This year, Disability Network Eastern Michigan added Adaptive Cycling and Adaptive Golf to the list of inclusive recreation activities. These new programs created additional opportunities for persons with disabilities to engage in outdoors activities. “I get paid to play, or that's what my parents say because I do fun things” shared Gerdeman. “But we play with a purpose. We base the programs on individual interests and the community needs. We provide structure and individual modification to recreational, wellness, and social activities for people with disabilities.” One in five (20%) people in Michigan have a disability and this number is increasing as our population ages. Persons with disabilities often face physical and societal barriers to recreation. Fun runs and walks in the community are generally not accessible for all. Water sports, fishing, and golf events usually do not include adaptable equipment for people with disabilities. DNEM works with other recreation programs in the community to explore new ways to build inclusivity and accessibility. Change is needed and DNEM is committed to breaking down the recreation barriers that exist for people with disabilities through ADA assessments and disability awareness workshops. “We want to showcase diversity and inclusion with all programs and services while promoting personal choice and independence” notes Kelly Winn, DNEM’s Chief Executive Officer. “We want to provide the opportunity for all individuals to drive the ball further while golfing, explore something adventurous while kayaking or cycling, or snag the "big one" during an adaptive fishing experience on Lake St. Clair. We want individuals to open their hearts and find their passions through music, dance, art and adaptive recreation. We continue to raise the bar and maintain a vision of a world where people with disabilities are empowered to pursue personal growth and choice through access to community resources and supportive services.” Disability Network Eastern Michigan (DNEM) is committed to promoting inclusion for all by breaking down barriers and opening paths towards independence and personal choice through resources, advocacy, information, support, and education. DNEM provides programming and resources to residents of Huron, Lapeer, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Sanilac and Tuscola counties. Please visit www.DNEMichigan.org or call 586-268-4160 to learn more about the many programs and services offered to people of all ages. Here’s a guide to help determine the right time for this transition. As health and mobility change with age, living in a home that suits these needs becomes increasingly important. Consider downsizing or moving if: • Stairs and home maintenance become challenging. • There’s a need for closer proximity to medical facilities or caregivers. Financial stability is a critical factor in deciding to downsize or move. Evaluate the following: • Home upkeep and maintenance costs versus potential savings of a smaller home. • Property taxes, utilities, and insurance costs. • Financial benefits of selling a larger home on retirement savings. Consider the impact on your social life and daily activities: • Opportunities for social interaction and recreational activities in a new community. • Proximity to family and friends for emotional support. • Access to amenities like community centers, parks, and shopping areas. Thinking of the future is crucial when deciding to downsize or move. Plan ahead by considering: • Future health care needs and availability of assisted living. • Accessibility and adaptability of a new home for potential mobility aids. • Minimal modifications needed if health conditions change. The emotional aspect of leaving a long-time home can be significant. Reflect on: • Emotional attachment to the current home and readiness to part with it. • Potential benefits of a fresh start in a new environment. • Discussing the decision with family members and seeking their support. Steps to Take When Deciding to Downsize or Move 1. Evaluate Needs: Assess health, financial, and lifestyle needs. 2. Research Options: Look into different housing types like smaller homes or senior living communities. 3. Consult Professionals: Speak with financial advisors, real estate agents, and senior living experts. 4. Visit Potential Homes: Tour various housing options to find the right fit. 5. Plan the Move: Plan the move carefully, considering logistics and emotional impact. Deciding to downsize or move is a personal and complex decision for seniors. By assessing health, financial, and lifestyle needs, and planning for the future, seniors can make a choice that enhances their quality of life and provides peace of mind. How to know when it's time to downsize or move

22 Michigan Seniors Guide • Fall 2024Senior Companion Program lifts spirits, enriches livesBeverly Bray just turned 87 and loves her weekly visits scheduled through the Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan’s AmeriCorps Seniors Senior Companion Program. But Bray, of Madison Heights, isn’t a program client. She’s a volunteer companion who enjoys the company of others and the bonds she has built over 17 years with the program that brings joy and friendly interaction to the lives of homebound, isolated or lonely seniors living among us. “It’s a wonderful program,” Bray said. “I moved here in 2007 and I had one daughter and they live out of state, in Virginia, so I know what it is to be alone. I had just moved here. To make a long story short, one of the people who was in the program at the time told me about the Senior Companion Program and I said, ‘What’s that?’ She told me about it and gave me a phone number to call, who to talk to, and the rest is history. I love it.” The program celebrated its 50th anniversary on Aug. 1. Carmela LaCommare, the program manager, said the Senior Companion Program is funded by AmeriCorps Seniors and the state of Michigan. The program services Oakland and Macomb counties. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Catholic Charities of Southeastern Michigan by phone or email, and there is an enrollment process. For those interested in arranging companion visits, there is a simple intake procedure and a process for matching volunteers with seniors in their area. “My volunteers are amazing,” LaCommare said. “They’re 55 or better. The average age of our volunteers is, I think, 80, and many of our volunteers serve anywhere between 20 and 32 hours a week.” Volunteers visit homebound seniors, socialize with them and try to keep them engaged. They also offer respite care for family members and caregivers. “They (the volunteers) found purpose with this program,” LaCommare said. “That’s the No. 1 thing they tell me.” That’s certainly true for Bray, who said she loves spending time with her client, Alice. Bray said two visits a week “keeps me on my toes” and provides a framework that inspires her to get things done around her home on a schedule that accommodates her volunteer work. “She (Alice) said, ‘I don’t know what I’d do without you, Bev.’ She doesn’t realize, she’s actually helping me keep my marbles together,” Bray said. “I’m tickled pink. I plan to be with it, health-wise, as long as I can walk and do what I’m doing. I like what I do. “I am so glad and intend to stay with the program as long as God has the final say so,” Bray said. For more information about the Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan AmeriCorps Seniors Senior Companion Program, go to ccsem.org or call (248) 537-3300.

26 Michigan Seniors Guide • Fall 2024Fall 2024 Guide for Senior Housing OptionsIL - Independent Living Independent living is simply any housing arrangement designed exclusively for older adults, generally those aged 55 and over. Housing varies widely, from apartment-style living to single-family detached homes. In general, the housing is friendlier to aging adults, often being more compact, with easier navigation and no maintenance or yard work to worry about. AL - Assisted Living Assisted living is a residential option for older adults who need help with some of the activities of daily living—things like cooking meals, getting to the bathroom in the middle of the night, keeping house, and traveling to appointments. An assisted living facility may be a good choice if you need more personal care services than you can get at home or in an independent living or retirement community. MC - Memory Care Memory care is a form of senior living that provides intensive, specialized care for people with memory issues. Many assisted living facilities and nursing homes have created special memory care units for dementia patients. There are also stand-alone memory care facilities. RC - Respite Care Respite care provides temporary relief for a primary caregiver, enabling you to take a much-needed break from the demands of caregiving. Some senior residential communities offer short-term overnight services. HC - Hospice Care Hospice (and palliative) care offers a dignified and comfortable alternative to spending your final months in the impersonal environment of a hospital, far from family, friends, pets, and all that you know and love. Palliative medicine helps you manage pain while hospice provides special care to improve the quality of life for both you as the patient and your family. We hope you find the Fall 2024 edition of our Senior Housing Guide for Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties helpful. The facilities are grouped by county, sorted alphabetically by city and then, by name. Each provides a variety of services and offers a range of amenities. We encourage you to contact them directly to learn more. If you’d like your Senior Care Facility listed in the Guide, please contact us.For your convenience, we have provided a key indicating the type of care available at each facility:
