The Mountain Shadows Way.From its inception, Mountain Shadows has advanced a new way of supporting individuals with intellectualdisabilities and developmental delays – encouraging them to not only live, but to thrive. And we’ve alwaysdone things “The Mountain Shadows Way,” which means we put our Mountain Shadows Family – ourresidents, participants, and staff – first. And, as in every family, if a family member has a need, we find away to meet it.Based on the needs of our family members over the years, we have grown from providing care in ourresidential homes to offering a robust whole-life, Continuum of Care, whereby we provide a broad scopeof integrated services and supports to meet the needs of all the intellectually and developmentallydisabled individuals we serve, through all phases of their lives, including nursing care, communityoutreach, support for behavioral challenges, post-secondary education, employment opportunities, assistance with managing finances, and transportation services. As I look forward, I am excited about our future. We will continue to explore innovative new programs tobenefit those we serve. And our mission will always remain the same – to meet each individual’s needs –and to provide the best life possible for all of our family members – The Mountain Shadows Way.It’s what families do.And, from our Mountain Shadows Family to yours, we thank you all for your support and generosity – wecouldn’t do any of this without you.Warm Regards,Stacy SullivanExecutive Director Mountain Shadows Support GroupMountain Shadows Ancillary ServicesA LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The Mountain Shadows Way.From its inception, Mountain Shadows has advanced a new way of supporting individuals with intellectualdisabilities and developmental delays – encouraging them to not only live, but to thrive. As I reflect on the mission of Mountain Shadows Support Group (MSSG), I recall standing at the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, watching the sun riseover Tanzania. At just over 19,000 feet above sea level, the journey up Africa’s highest mountain taught me that we can push beyond ourperceived limits – something I believe applies to all of us, including my son, Parker, and all of the residents of our Mountain ShadowsCommunity.Parker has cerebral palsy. Daily tasks we take for granted – the ability to dress ourselves, the ability to bathe and feed ourselves, the ability towalk and talk – these are things Parker has challenges with. He needs help, every day, 24 hours a day, with all of these daily things. As a parent ofa special needs child, two fears dominate: “Who will take care of him when I cannot?” and “Will he be cared for by people who love him as muchas I do?”Today, we stand strong, ready to climb new summits. This strength is a testament to our senior leadership, particularly Wade Wilde, who servedas Executive Director/Chief Financial Officer, for more than three decades. Wade has stepped down as Executive Director, while retaining hisposition as CFO. Stacy Sullivan, our new Executive Director, brings over 30 years of experience as MSSG Director of Operations to the position, and together, we are collaborating to implement strategic goals for sustainable growth.Mountain Shadows remains a beacon within the industry, due to our financial stability, and our dedicated team of professionals, who genuinelycare about our mission of helping parents, families, and individuals with special needs. The support of the Mountain Shadows Foundation andour San Diego and Riverside communities remains crucial to our mission. And, thanks to our donors’ generosity, Parker recently achieved hisown milestone – sit-skiing down a mountain through our CARE Program. For our residents and families, what Mountain Shadows provides is – I’ll call it love. Every resident deserves it. And every day, I see it in action,in the care Mountain Shadows provides my son, and all those who call Mountain Shadows home. And, as the Chairman of the MSSG Board ofDirectors, it is my mission to ensure this love continues to uplift every member of the Mountain Shadows Family. With Warm Regards, Ted BrownChair, MSSG Board of DirectorsFather, MSCH-SD Resident, ParkerA LETTER FROM THE MSSG BOARD OF DIRECTORSTed Brown As I reflect on the mission of Mountain Shadows Support Group (MSSG), I recall standing at the summit of Mt. MSF aims to expand the resources available to Mountain Shadows so that funds are easily accessed for equipmentand capital projects. With ongoing changes in how Mountain Shadows receives funding from the government, certain items our residents need are no longer funded. Additionally, there are ongoing capital improvements thatare needed to make our homes and campus better for our residents. To accomplish this, we continue to grow and diversify our donor base with the underlying goal of building ourendowment fund. Mountain Shadows Foundation (MSF) Mountain Shadows Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization organized as a resource for Mountain ShadowsSupport Group and Mountain Shadows Ancillary Services to preserve and improve the homes and services theyprovide for individuals with intellectual disabilities in the San Diego and Riverside communities.MSF helps MSSG and MSAS accomplish their missions by supporting special programs designed to promote thewelfare of the people they serve and assist them in achieving their maximum potential.VisionMountain Shadows Foundation envisions a future whereabundant resources empower us to sustain, strengthen, and expand the programs and capital that support theMountain Shadows community Why are we here? What is your purpose for being here on this earth? In short, I believe we are all here to serve. But you may besurprised that the answer to my “why” was revealed to me by Brittany, a little girl in a wheelchair, who lives at Mountain Shadows. The Mountain Shadows Foundation (MSF) is the funding arm which supports the critical, life-saving, life-serving, activities of MSSGand MSAS. Brittany, like the other developmentally challenged individuals receiving care and support under this Mountain Shadowsumbrella of organizations, is severely disabled. Born with Cerebral Palsy, she will never walk, sit up, feed herself, be a mother, or doany of the myriad of daily activities you and I take for granted. Yet, while many would see Brittany as someone in need, she considers it her mission in life to serve others. She has given hope tocancer victims by donating locks of her own hair. Hope to amputees by visiting a disabled veteran’s hospital. And, by using herspecial gifts, she has literally saved lives by reaching out to, and inspiring, those who had given up all hope in life.“Doing things for others makes me feel good in my heart. I want to help. Not everyone has the opportunity to do something good for someone else.”~Brittany Barnson, Mountain Shadows ResidentI served 39 years in your United States Air Force. I fought in 11 wars. And people ask me, “Are you a hero?” I say, “No. But I servedwith those who are.” As Chair of the Mountain Shadows Foundation Board of Directors, I now serve with another kind of hero – thestaff and volunteers who selflessly give of themselves every day to care for, nurture and love all of the special needs individualsMountain Shadows supports. But the real hero? The unsung hero? That’s the little girl in the wheelchair – my daughter, Brittany. She’s my hero, because despite her challenges, she has chosen to serve others, and she has made a difference in countless lives. You may wonder, “Why am I here? Can I really make a difference in this world?” Yes, you can! You can follow Brittany’s example andhelp those who cannot help themselves. You can become a member of our Mountain Shadows Family and make a difference in thelives of 434 developmentally disabled individuals. Your time, talents, and treasure can make a lasting difference here.As the Chair of the Mountain Shadows Foundation Board of Directors, I am honored to serve my daughter, Brittany, and all of themembers of the Mountain Shadows Community. I invite you to join us as we sustain, strengthen, and expand the programs andcapital to uplift those who cannot lift themselves. With Best Wishes,Jeff BarnsonChair, MSF Board of DirectorsFather, MSCH-SD Resident, BrittanyA LETTER FROM THE MSF BOARD OF DIRECTORS Brittany is a shining example of why we are all hereTo read more of Brittany’s story please go to: mtnshadows.org/riding-her-coattails-to-heaven/

Each year, thanks toour generous donors, residents swim, sail, canoe, play volleyball in the sand, and even sing around the campfire, atthis fully accessible aquatic camp for special needs individuals. While many of us take a day at the beach for granted, just getting to the water’s edge can be challenging for thedisabled. For our Mountain Shadows residents, a day at the beach requires a fleet of custom, handicap-accessiblebuses, drivers, caregivers, special equipment, medical supplies, special foods, and more. All the effort is well worth it! You can see Mountain Shadows’ residents transform as the dayprogresses with smiles growing bigger and bigger. Each has something they especially lookforward to.
