In both instances, receiving a notification when a piece of equipment experiences unauthorized movement, either due to theft or employee misuse on side jobs, is invaluable. With the average stolen equipment value at just under $30,000, it’s imperative fleet managers have visibility to not only keep their equipment safe but bottom line profitable.MWS: WHAT ARE STEPS MANAGERS CAN TAKE TO COMBAT THIS WIDESPREAD ISSUE?HEMMATI: GPS tracking solutions like Spireon’s allow managers to combat this issue in multiple ways. First, they can establish geofences around storage yards that generate alerts when equipment enters or exits the yard. They can also generate alerts when equipment moves at all. Even if a telematics device is tampered with, an alert can be set to notify the manager that it’s been disconnected so that the manager knows something is awry. Having the ability to intervene before it’s too late leads to much faster recovery rates. According to the National Equipment Register, delays in reporting are one of the main reasons for low recovery rates. GPS allows real-time tracking so that if theft happens, law enforcement can leverage location data and track down valuable assets. An added benefit is that anti-theft devices Monitor Your AssetsEQUIPMENT TRACKING KEEPS YOU IN THE KNOW

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM NOVEMBER 2020OPERATIONS Power Take-offs 101WITH A CUMMINS EXPERTCummins isn’t quite a household name all over the world, but we would bet that almost all truck enthusiasts know the name. It’s a respected brand of diesel engines, and many of the work truck industry’s hardest working trucks are powered by a Cummins. Yet, for some truck enthusiasts (especially in the light-duty segment) and very unlike Cummins, a power take-off (PTO) is a foreign concept. However, depending on the application, many in the work truck industry use a PTO in daily operations. A PTO is a device that transfers a truck’s mechanical power to another piece of equipment: Think dump truck or crane. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of a PTO, you might be asking yourself “What does a PTO have to do with a Cummins engine, or any engine for that matter?” Our answer: A lot. You see, PTOs are powered by a truck’s powertrain. Without a truck’s engine and transmission, a PTO is useless. That’s why it’s imperative that a truck owner chooses the right PTO for their job and their truck. That’s where Cummins comes in. We chatted with a Cummins expert, Russell Poling, the technical support manager for Truck Equipment Manufacturers (TEM) and Body Builders at Cummins.Read ahead to enter into Russell’s class: Power Take-offs 101.

Page 27

NOVEMBER 2020 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS  MWS: In order for PTOs to work correctly, they must be supported by the truck’s powertrain. How important is it for the engine, transmission, and PTO to work in harmony for maximum PTO output? Can one weak link among the three produce a weak PTO output?POLING: It’s quite important that the engine, transmission, and PTO work in harmony in order to get the amount of power needed to operate the PTO device without causing any damage to the powertrain or the PTO pump itself. One weak link can reduce power output or efficiency, or even lead to component damage.MWS: Fuel savings is a big concern for fleets. How does Cummins work with PTO manufacturers to ensure fuel savings while also delivering ample power for the job?POLING: We recommend appropriate engine ratings to where customers can get the most possible power at the lowest engine speed, which is how they’ll save fuel. The slower the engine spins, the less fuel it takes. MWS: What—if anything—do owners and upfitters need to know about a truck’s engine before installing a PTO?POLING: It’s imperative to know whether the engine has enough horsepower and torque to operate the PTO device. You also need to know whether the engine can accept the installation of a particular device. For example, not every engine can handle REPTO (Rear Engine ed differently.MWS: What should one know about a truck’s transmission before installing a PTO?POLING: If the PTO is transmission-mounted, you need to know whether the transmission has mounting capabilities for that particular PTO device. Most transmissions have a cover plate on either side; one with six bolts and one with eight bolts. The PTO can be mounted there. However, not all have this cover plate.MWS: How does an owner decide what PTO is best for their truck and their application?POLING: First they need the answers to a couple questions. For example, can the PTO handle the horsepower and torque requirements? Can it handle the speed it will run? Some PTO pumps are speed sensitive, so that should be a consideration.MWS: What is a common PTO and transmission pairing with a Cummins engine? Power Take-offs 101

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM NOVEMBER 2020OPERATIONSIt’s the dreaded roadside breakdown. Having a fleet driver stuck on the side of the road with a fleet vehicle that’s loaded with equipment, tools, and supplies might be high on the list of a fleet manager’s worst nightmares. How long will it be until a tow truck can get to the vehicle? How will a customer react when they learn a technician isn’t coming as scheduled? There are a myriad of questions that arise when a fleet manager is notified of a fleet vehicle breakdown. But there are some fleet managers who don’t sweat it.When drivers of those certain fleets experience the dreaded roadside breakdown in a company vehicle carrying equipment and supplies, the nearest tow truck driver in the area can be notified to come to their aid as soon as possible. During roadside breakdowns the drivers in these particular fleets can be confident knowing their tow truck driver’s exact location and when they’ll show up. These drivers can rest easy knowing the tow truck driver prioritizes safety and is qualified for the job.All of this is possible with HONK.HONK FOR HELPUnless the driver or fleet manager directly calls a tow and recovery business to aid in a roadside event, the manager or driver likely calls their insurance company or a roadside assistance company such as AAA. Insurance providers and roadside assistance companies typically use a small amount of tow and recovery providers to work certain territories. What happens if those providers are dispatched to multiple customers at once? Lots of waiting. For fleets using HONK, the experience is drastically different. HONK is an on-demand platform that connects motorists to towing professionals and insurers. A fleet manager or driver can simply request a tow on the platform, and HONK identifies the service providers that are nearest to the event and can get there the fastest. “We race in real time and queue our network based on quality,” says HONK VP of business development, Paul Williams.HONK is reliable. Its two largest demographics of customers are insurance companies and fleet companies—both being businesses that serve others. For fleets specifically, HONK understands that no two fleet companies are the same. They each On-demand Roadside Assistance at Your FingertipsHONK FOR HELP

NOVEMBER 2020 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 37have slightly—or vastly—different needs that should be handled in a timely, professional way. Each fleet wants to be better for their client, and without HONK a customer could be forced to wait on a service technician for hours or even days. HOW IT WORKSWilliams says HONK is different because its focus on the roadside incident experience. While smartphones put technology in everyone's hands, HONK built a platform powered by tech. Tow and recovery professionals simply join the HONK network and download the partner app on their smartphone to connect to those requiring assistance. Currently more than 75,000 service vehicles comprise HONK’s network. Once HONK receives a service request, HONK dispatches the nearest service vehicle for the fastest recovery. HONK’s dispatch technology provides fleet drivers and their managers with real-time ETA, GPS pin-point location data, and its driver/customer communications channel that handles payment virtually. HONK isn’t subscription based and doesn’t require a fee for its services. If you don’t use it, you don’t pay for it; clients and customers send payment per event.Although HONK is for everyone, the company isn’t new to the fleet industry. It currently works with two of the largest fleet management companies in the US: ARI and Wheels, Inc. In fact Wheels, a fleet leasing and management company, uses HONK for its fleet of 300,000 vehicles nationwide. Barbara Banas, the senior director of procurement for Wheels, says the company came across HONK when researching ways to improve its services.“Our perspective in procurement is based on our client driver experience,” Banas begins. “With roadside services, we are most interested in how safely and efficiently our roadside provider can provide repair services for our client drivers.”Banas says that after evaluating competitors in the roadside market, the result proved HONK as the industry leader. Three years later, Wheels, Inc. still uses HONK services.HONK is currently available for light- and medium-duty vehicles up to 26,000 GVWR and features services such as tow and recovery, jump start, flat tire, refueling, and locked out incidents.SAFE, QUALIFIEDQualified, insured, and safe service technicians are the only technicians HONK strives to have on its platform. The brand achieves this goal through its vetting process when a provider signs up to connect with HONK’s network. The process ensures the service provider holds a minimum level of insurance required for tow and recovery. HONK also ensures the service provider holds a license to operate tow and recovery machinery.A breakdown is a vulnerable time for drivers. With uncertainty surrounding the cause of the breakdown, when help will arrive, what their customers will think, etc., the last thing that should be on the driver’s mind is whether the help coming treat them and their equipment in a professional manner. To ease the minds of drivers and fleet managers, HONK sends out a service provider who shares that safety concern. All HONK service providers undergo a complete background check—a service offered and paid for by HONK.In fact, HONK is so concerned about driver safety in the event of a roadside incident that it partnered with Checkr, a company that simplifies and makes sense of the background check process. Checkr expanded how HONK provides and delivers background checks. Checkr provides continuous background data to HONK, so that any time there is an update to the criminal background, HONK is also notified. TRANSPARENCYHONK’s web-driven platform and 24/7 contact center handles the interaction with the service provider, so after the fleet manager has notified HONK that service is needed they can simply sit back and let HONK do its thing. Once a service provider is on their way, the fleet manager (and the driver using service provider’s whereabouts and ETA in real time. If the driver is taking a solo run with no management back at the office, the driver can also use HONK’s mobile platform to request a service provider. With HONK’s transparent platform that shows drivers and fleet managers their service provider’s location, fleet managers can even improve planning. With this feature, fleet managers can assess if it’s possible to send out an extra vehicle to the driver so they can be on their way to their job instead of waiting on their current vehicle. They can also better inform customers on the timing of their driver’s arrival. With these tools and the assurance of a quick, qualified, and safe recovery process, why would any fleet not choose to HONK for help?FOR MORE INFORMATION HONK is an on-demand roadside assistance plaorm that connects service providers to those experiencing a roadside event. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM NOVEMBER 202038OPERATIONSOPERATIONSShipping, logistics, and other vehicle-related services don’t tend to be the first things that come to mind when people consider emerging small businesses. We tend to think of these as services and industries handled by large, established companies. That said, it can be an appealing sort of business to move into. Whether that means starting a local moving company, setting up a small fleet to offer shipping to large businesses at a competitive rate, or anything similar, a well-run small business certainly has a chance of breaking through. If this is something you’re interested to try, there are a few key questions you’ll need to answer for yourself before your business can get up and running.1WHAT WILL YOU DO Unfortunately, this is the first question for any potential new business in 2020—at least if it’s a business that is going to involve any sort of in-person contact. Where logistics and related industries are concerned, there have been significant operational issues associated with the pandemic. Some experts suggested early on that many smaller companies would disappear, and we have in fact seen supply chains and shipping-related businesses struggling mightily in the months since. If you’re starting now though, you’ll have a better chance to establish a new company if you have clear safety measures in place. Equip your business to stay safe, and advertise your consideration of the coronavirus as one of the reasons your business is trustworthy.DO YOU KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT OFFICIAL?It’s easy to imagine that when you’re just getting started in an industry of this nature, you might be able to simply get a truck, launch a website, call some clients, and get started. That may work for a time. Ultimately though, you’ll need to make it official, which means filing the requisite paperwork to start a formal company. Luckily enough, this tends to be relatively simple. There’s ample data suggesting consumers and businesses alike prefer to work with eco-friendly companies. This means that using efficient vehicles and adopting whatever green measures you can muster likely makes your business more attractive. Fortunately, states are actually making it easier for people and businesses alike to transition to more efficient vehicles. In Alabama specifically, recent grants incentivizing electrical vehicle use result in more charging stations placed throughout the state. Additionally, there are some tax breaks associated with purchasing electric vehicles, both in Alabama and elsewhere. Do your research and consider perks like these. You may find that you have a clear route toward an energy-forward business.5In addition to being forward-looking on energy, it’s also a good idea to adopt modern technology that can improve the efficiency of most any vehicle-driven business. Technologies driving the future of logistics include automated systems, data management, and even blockchain use for payment and asset tracking—just to give you an idea. You don’t necessarily have to arm your company and vehicles with all of these things from the beginning. But being aware of the technologies that can improve vehicle-driven businesses is wise because your competitors are likely to be using them.As you get started, you will of course have to address many different challenges to start whatever business it is you’re working on. As businesses evaluate 2020 to prep for 2021, we continue to challenge ourselves to make an even stronger comeback as the pandemic continues.DOT COMPLIANCEIt’s imperative to confirm all employees are correctly licensed, have proper medical certificates, and are following HOS and off-duty regulations. At the start of the pandemic, the number of hours drivers could operate before taking a break was increased, knowing that supplies needed to get to final destinations quickly. More hours on the road equate to additional potential productivity for fleets operating in this challenging economic environment. However, increased hours of service are likely temporary, and drivers need to be aware of potential shifts in government regulations, while fleets must ensure their ELD provider keeps up with any changes.Another evolving regulation is the sleeper berth rule, which allows more opportunities to split drivers’ 10 hours of off-duty time. Even though most drivers have stopped using the sleeper berth split rules, I believe more drivers will start taking advantage of it, due to its flexibility and how easy it is to understand. Companies need to think about how evolving regulations will impact drivers so they can amend policies and implement driver training based on changing requirements and business needs. Planning ahead to balance safety, productivity, and efficiency is key. Rather than becoming complacent as a result of current relaxed enforcement, it’s imperative that companies remain current with documentation and up to date with the latest policy changes.DATA PROGRAMSWith the abundance of data available from onboard and back-end systems, fleets can sometimes be overwhelmed with how best to gather, assess, and apply it to improve business outcomes. A myriad of opportunities exist for fleets to improve performance across a variety of measures if data is collected, curated, and analyzed appropriately. For instance, fleets can leverage the structured, predictive, and consistent data sets coming off ELD devices to build models that can predict preventable accidents, who’s going to quit, and which drivers are likely to be most productive. Knowing each company has different operating parameters and practices, it’s important to determine which data sets are most essential to make your business successful, profitable, and safe. Having a strong telematics partner can help lighten the burden on internal resources.A strong and impactful data program requires clear communication with your drivers about what information is captured, how it is analyzed, and the benefits to drivers. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. One of the reasons we’ve seen drivers quit is because they receive too much redundant or unnecessary training. While that might sound counterintuitive, if training is too repetitive, and frankly boring, experienced drivers may look for opportunities elsewhere. Keep in mind that the most efficient data programs are flexible. Successful programs adapt to changing variables—mileage, road conditions, global pandemics—to make sure insights and training remain relevant across all aspects of the driver’s challenging job.NEW AUDIT PROCESSThe DOT has typically completed on-site fleet audits, providing a couple of days’ notice for what they will review. Today, the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration and its state law enforcement partners have implemented a new training program in order to have off-site or remote audits. Remote audits generally cause less disruption to fleet operations, are more cost-effective for the government, and are more efficient and help ensure the health and safety of personnel by allowing for adherence with social distancing measures. We can expect these off-site audits to continue even post COVID-19, so it is important for businesses to adjust audit processes and planning now. While future implications of the pandemic on business operations are unclear, we encourage fleet operators to continue to adapt to ensure profitability, efficiency, and safety throughout the pandemic and beyond. Ensuring your business stays current and adapts with evolving HOS regulations and off-duty requirements, revising and leveraging a strong data program, and understanding and preparing for the new off-site audit process will help fleets succeed during and post COVID.ABOUT THE AUTHORReza Hemma is the vice president of product management at Spireon. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM NOVEMBER 2020MAINTENANCEWhether you own or manage a single working truck or a fleet, making sure that a truck is maintained and operating properly can have a noticeable impact on the bottom line. If a truck is sidelined for any reason, it’s a financial blow to the business. One of the most common maintenance issues facing hardworking fleet businesses are wheels that have become corroded or rusty. Corroded wheels are often equated with safety issues. OSHA has mandated wheel and rim refurbishing for commercial vehicles since the early 1990s. To ensure that their structural integrity isn’t compromised, wheels need to be maintained and refurbished before corrosion moves in. How to properly restore wheels without exploding the budget is the tricky question.Outsourcing wheels for refurbishing is one way to address the problem. But this can be an expensive undertaking, and most often the results are acceptable but not exceptional—maybe not worth the expense. The procedure usually involves scraping off rust and dirt, powder coating the wheel, then baking it in a paint booth. This can take a few Wheel RefurbishingA DOLLAR-WISE SOLUTION FOR KEEPING TRUCKS ON THE ROAD By Eli Greenbaum STEP 1: Abrade wheel surface to remove corrosion using a drill with a wire or flap abrasive wheel. The cost and time involved in outsourcing could end up being significant.DIY ALTERNATIVEDon’t fret. There are efficient and affordable alternatives to outsourcing the refurbishing of corroded wheels. Thanks to ever-advancing technology, there are now aerosol products that allow a DIY approach to wheel refurbishment at a company’s own maintenance facility or garage. These products are affordable, quickly deliver consistent quality, and don’t require a paint booth or sophisticated mechanical skill to use. One such solution is available from PPG’s commercial coatings offerings. “Our wheel refurbishing system is designed to help keep truck maintenance costs down and make the entire process easy,” says Scott Colvin, PPG brand manager, commercial coatings. “These days everyone needs to be careful about costs, but that doesn’t mean cutting corners on maintenance or settling for less than the right way of doing things. This aerosol-applied method gives truck owners the opportunity to do the job on their own, in house to speed the process, save money, and reduce downtime.”4-STEP PROCESSThe PPG aerosol wheel refurbish process, for example, involves four simple steps: 1. Abrade the wheel surface to remove corrosion using a drill with a wire or flap abrasive wheel.2. Clean the wheel with PPG ONECHOICE® SXA330 Wax and Grease Remover.3. Apply three double wet coats of PPG CPC-SP8150 gray aerosol primer, allowing it to flash for 15 minutes between coats.4. flash for 15 minutes between coats. The PPG process offers a white or black topcoat option. Custom colors can be worked up to match a truck’s look.Colvin also points out that corroded wheels can have an effect beyond maintenance and safety. “Trucks are rolling advertisements; your company’s name is all over the truck, and if the truck doesn’t look good, what does that say about the company? Rusty, dirty wheels are not a plus.” With time-saving, affordable refurbishing now available, trucks can quickly get back on the road and keep racking up the profits.FOR MORE INFORMATION Find out more about PPG’s do-it-yourself wheel refurbishment system, visit www.ppgrenish.com. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM NOVEMBER 202044TECHNOLOGYPaper forms have dominated fleet vehicle inspections and maintenance for years. While tasks such as daily or annual inspections are a compliance requirement for vehicles operating under a DOT number, technology is changing how contractors manage all of their assets. While many companies still rely on two-ply forms for inspections or paper work orders for maintenance, it’s important to understand the advances in technology from the past 20 years. As the way we work changes—with more remote employees and jobs—only technology can ensure we stay connected and safe in an ever-increasing regulatory environment. Here are seven ways technology has changed—and continues to change—not only the way you inspect or service your trucks, but the equipment and assets employees depend on every day.1SENSORS & TELEMATICS DATADepending on the thoroughness of a vehicle inspection, managers and fleet operators can automatically report data related to tire pressure readings (for trip inspection through the use of telematics solutions. Whether installed in commercial or consumer work trucks, solutions like Geotab and Verizon Connect also integrate with digital DVIR solutions like Whip Around to make it easier to bring in vehicle information such as GPS location or an automatic odometer reading for inspection purposes.Leveraging data from tire pressure sensors, oil pressure sensors, and others have made these measurements easier than ever, assuming these systems are regularly serviced.AUTOMATED MAINTENANCE REMINDERSElectronic data collects through the use of inspection and maintenance tools. One way this advances maintenance is through the use of reminders. Especially with a fleet of trucks on numerous jobsites, determining when routine maintenance tasks 7 Ways Technology has Changed Inspections and MaintenanceARE YOUR PROCESSES OUTDATED? NOVEMBER 2020 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 45should be performed is something that technology can remind managers to complete. One example of this is a simple alert triggered from an odometer reading.3COMMUNICATION BETWEEN MECHANICSThe way organizations operate has undoubtedly changed in response to the coronavirus, and this includes how information is communicated between drivers, managers, and even mechanics. What used to be a primarily paper-based inspection and maintenance process has quickly evolved into an entirely digital and contactless process for a growing number of companies. One example of this is the introduction to safety protocols many companies built into the pre-trip and post-trip inspection process. Disinfecting surfaces and making sure essentials like hand sanitizers are available and stocked at all times is a simple inspection item that can make a big difference.4 ENTERING NOTES DIGITALLY INCLUDING ANY IMAGES OF DAMAGEUndocumented damage really can take its toll on jobsites depending on what type of equipment trucks are exposed to.While many still revert to paper accident forms, entering notes digitally and taking photos of damage can help protect employees who otherwise may be blamed for damage they did not cause. 5INVENTORY MANAGEMENT FOR PARTSEspecially with smaller contractors using in-house mechanics, another way technology can help reduce unused inventory is by implementing inventory management for parts work trucks or equipment depend on.Technology such as reorder notifications when tires are low in stock or simply having an accurate count of inventory on hand helps companies stay on budget by reducing over purchasing. BUDGETING & RESALE VALUEA not-so-obvious benefit vehicle inspection and maintenance software has afforded work truck fleets relates to budgeting. Projecting the annual costs of maintenance over time becomes much easier with more vehicle data and can even help in spotting common occurrences based on the vehicle manufacturer. This type of data can not only enable organizations to be more accurate, but also make better purchasing decisions. For example, an organization may realize upgrading to Ford F-250s may be the best data-driven decision over time to avoid common problems that are linked to their fleet of light-duty trucks.7DIGITAL WORK ORDERSCreating work orders is simple enough most of the time, but it’s making sure work orders are delivered to mechanics in a timely manner that technology can really assist with.Instant visibility into vehicle faults whenever they occur allows maintenance teams to be proactive in tasks like ordering parts. This is not possible if work orders are hand delivered at the end of a shift.TAKING ADVANTAGESince there are so many different ways to implement processes internally, it’s best to start small with an existing process like inspections you would like to streamline or modernize. While GPS tracking and other telematics solutions can be installed and provide more data to enable fleets to save on fuel costs or maintenance, getting team members to replace paper processes with a mobile app is usually a good starting point. These types of maintenance and inspection solutions also don’t require any hardware or extensive training to use, making it easy for teams using paper inspections to get started right away.ABOUT THE AUTHOR Tim Boyle is the cofounder of Whip Around, a eet compliance and maintenance soware applicaon for the US transport industry.
