The show was full of innovations, electric trucks and chassis, and so much more. I wrote a show review and a show recap on pages 14 and 48. This being our alternative fuels issue, we thought it fitting to showcase three trucks this month: the Ford F-150 Lightning (page 16), the Peterbilt 220E (page 20), and the Volvo VNR electric (page 24). But our alternative fuels issue doesn’t focus one just one type of alternative fuel. The new gas MT chassis is powered by a GM 6.6-L V8 engine and fetures increased power and torque, improved fuel economy and increased durability, as well as industry-first direct-injection technology. The gas-powered MT 6.6-L comes in two versions—the MT45, which offers a GVWR of up to 19,000 lbs, and the MT55, which offers a GVWR of up to 23,000 lbs. The MT 6.6-L is optimized for driver safety and ease of operation through its standard OptiView, a fully integrated all-digital gauge display, DriveTech driver controls, 360-degree camera, and overhead obstacle-detection system. Designed as an open system, the functionality will work with camera systems from multiple leading providers. The dashcam integration system enables carriers to create and assign personalized programs for each driver. Using a simple drop-down menu, administrators can create as many rules as needed, specify the type of driving behavior, and set trigger thresholds and periods. The integration system allows for cascading levels of training intervention based on the number and frequency of driver events. Rules are customer configurable and can be changed at any time. This strong but lightweight unit is capable of loading, unloading, and dumping various truck bodies. The NXT18 is the first telescopic hooklift in the new NXT Series and features a Z channel base design and an industry leading universal body latching system. The NXT18 is an 18,000-lb capacity hoist built for a Class 4 through 7 chassis. The unit has a

Show exhibitors, attendees, coordinators, and all others carried an energy at the show that was electrifying—and it wasn’t all due to the many electric chassis, trucks, and products on the show floor. In many respects, I think everyone was just glad to be back, soaking in all the new products from their favorite manufacturers and service providers since the last time we all got together before the world shut down due to COVID-19 back in March 2020.Each year I’ve attended the show since 2018, I noted that the show had a theme of electrification. This year, I would say a theme of electrification was even more pronounced with an electric truck, chassis, or some sort of electric product in just about every booth. If you missed the show, we’re here with a show roundup.IT’S ELECTRICChevrolet, Ford, Ram, Hino, International, Peterbilt, Isuzu, Freightliner—just about every truck OEM in the building had an electric vehicle either on the show floor or detailed plans as to when to expect to see one from them.Two trucks garnering a lot of hype in the media and on the show floor were the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Chevrolet Silverado EV. We showcase the Ford F-150 Lightning on page 16, but Ford also announced a complete scope of charging solutions for the home, the depot, and when taking the Lightning on the go with Ford Pro Charging. Ford also announced Ford Pro Intelligence, a charging software similar to telematics that directly integrates with utility companies and can schedule charging between electric vehicles in your fleet.The Chevrolet Silverado EV was on display in the Chevrolet booth. The engineers at Chevrolet developed the all-new pickup from the ground up. The truck will feature a range of more than 400 miles per charge, 510 hp and 615 lb-ft of toque, DC fast charging capabilities that enable the truck to add about 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging, up to 10 outlets to power devices and equipment, and more. The vehicle will launch next spring to the fleet market first. The Silverado EV Work Truck trim will also feature 15 active safety features as a standard offering. Be looking for a showcase of the truck in an upcoming issue.Ram also announced its plans for an electric pickup coming in 2024 after its electric ProMaster and ProMaster City set to launch in 2023. Using input from Amazon, Ram designed the electric ProMaster to be suited for the delivery segment.TRUCK MARKET UPDATEIf COVID-19 taught us anything, it’s that the work truck segment is vital to our society. But the pandemic did more than solidify the necessity of the work truck segment—it caused businesses to adapt. Online shopping has remained popular, and bringing services directly to the customer has impacted the work truck side of the business as well. Ram reported a whopping 25% sales increase of its ProMaster vans in 2021 alone, while sales for its ProMaster City skyrocketed by 40%. On the truck side, manufacturers just couldn't, and still can't, get trucks on the lots fast enough.Morgan Truck Body couldn’t ignore the demand for trucks in last-mile delivery, either. Morgan Truck Body also can’t ignore the current driver shortage or compliance concerns. So, the company has developed and will continue to develop ways to make drivers more comfortable and safe, ways to reduce truck body weight, and more.At the show, Mack Trucks reported 3.7% market share for its Mack MD, a medium-duty truck launched in the winter of 2020 just as COVID-19 was Work Truck Week 2022THAT’S A WRAP By Jade Brasher, MWS editor

ramping up. Mack reported that one-third of the sales for the truck were used in segments the manufacture wasn’t even targeting, showcasing the versatility of the truck as well as industry demand.NEW & NEXTAlong with all the innovation in EVs and ways to improve operations for a robust work truck market, several manufacturers and providers debuted their results of the past two years of development. One manufacturer, Stellar, showcased new service van updates, a new telescopic hooklift, a new control system (CDTpro) with Range Finder, and a new truck body and welder body.At its first appearance at Work Truck Week, REE Automotive proved it’s making its way into the US market. Its innovative REEcorners were on display in its booth. REE essentially redesigned vehicles as we know them with its REEcorners that integrate all critical vehicle components into the arch of the wheel. Each REEcorner is independent, powered by its own ECU. REEcorners allow fleet owners to tailor the vehicle platform specifically for what they need. Although revolutionary—and with REE literally reinventing the wheel—REEcorners have the potential to be even much simpler to maintain than any other vehicle on the market. Be watching out for REE Automotive, because this innovation is going to make waves.We’ve talked a lot about EVs and electric products, but Vanair showcased something different. Its next generation Air N Arc 330 Diesel was brought on through a collaboration with Lincoln Electric. It features a Vanair 60 CFM rotary screw air compressor, a Lincoln Electric 330Amp welder output, and a 10kW generator. It can be used as an air compressor, a welder, a generator, a battery booster, and a battery charger. It’s small, saving valuable space for other equipment and tools. But if you’re still pining for operations that are all electric, Vanair also showcased its EPEQ electrified equipment lineup. At Modern WorkTruck Solutions, we’re excited to see how well this electric pickup performs for work truck fleet owners. But until you can get it in your driveway or in your truck yard, we’re here with an overview.POWER OF LIGHTNINGThe Ford F-150 Lightning has two battery options: one suited more for everyday driving and one more suited for longer trips or heavy hauls. First up is the standard range battery that offers a range of approximately 230 miles on a full charge. Then there is the extended range battery capable of approximately 300 miles in the XLT and Lariat models. Owners of Platinum models can expect a range of approximately 200 miles with the extended range battery.The batteries are housed in a lithium-ion battery pack, and an exostructure acts as a shield to protect the pack when off-roading. Additionally, Ford engineers mounted the battery pack between the frame rails, which means it doesn’t occupy interior volume or compromise bed space. The truck also features metal skid plates and underbody protection for further peace of mind when taking the road less traveled.Along with the battery, the F-150 Lightning features two inboard motors that power the 4x4 system (which is standard with the F-150 Lightning). Coupled with the extended range battery, the powertrain in the F-150 Lightning can produce 563 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque. This ensures faster acceleration, targeting 0 to 60 in approximately 4.5 seconds. For businesses that require towing, the F-150 Lightning features a maximum towing capability of 10,000 lbs on Pro, XLT, and Lariat models with the extended range battery and towing package. The F-150 Lightning features a payload capacity of up to 2,000 lbs.CHARGING UPFor those concerned about charging their F-150 Lightning, Ford offers two ways to charge the F-150 Lightning: when home with the Ford Charge Station Pro and when on the road through the BlueOval Charge Network.The Ford Charge Station Pro is available to all Ford EV customers for around $1,300. It offers 80 amps of power on demand. The charging station charges extended range batteries to 30 miles per charge hour. It charges standard range batteries to 19 miles per charge hour. The charge station fully charges the F-150 Lightning extended range battery in 8 hours. The F-150 Lightning can also act as a home generator, automatically transferring its Intelligent Backup Power to your home when connected to the Ford Charge Station Pro.For charging on the road, Ford supplies a mobile power cord with every F-150 Lightning purchase. The cord is compatible with a 240V NEMA 14-50 outlet and can fully charge your F-150 Lightning’s extended range battery in 20 hours. However, when a 240V outlet isn’t available, F-150 Lightning owners can simply plug their trucks into a common 120V outlet and charge at a lower speed. Ford also announced other fleet-specific charging options at Work Truck Week 2022.LIGHTNING TECHIt should be no surprise that this all-electric Ford pickup is filled with technology. Ford’s SYNC 4 is available in the truck, as well as Ford’s SYNC 4A that comes with a huge 15.5-inch touchscreen infotainment center standard on Lariat and Platinum models. With SYNC 4A, owners can access apps, navigation, and more through touch or voice commands. The Ford F-150 Lightning also offers the convenience and efficiency of different drive modes that drivers can select at the push of a button. These modes include Normal, Sport, Tow/Haul, and LIGHT-DUTY WORKTRUCK SHOWCASE The F-150 Lightning's tailgate features an integrated work surface.

The digital cluster display is 12-inches wide and features a customized display depending on the drive mode selected.But not only is this technology a nice perk—it makes work easier. For instance, Ford’s Pro Trailer Hitch Assist is available with the F-150 Lightning; it’s a technology feature that automatically controls the steering, brake, and throttle of the truck to align the hitch with the trailer. When the trailer is connected to the truck, owners can take advantage of the available Pro Trailer Backup Assist that allows drivers to automatically turn their trailers with a knob at their fingertips. And when backing a trailer, the 15.5-inch infotainment screen displays Trailer Reverse Guidance that uses multiple cameras to give drivers a better idea of their surroundings.The truck is also available with onboard scales that measure payload weight. And when weight is a direct correlation to the truck’s range, you can count on using this feature often. FOR WORKFinally, for those in the work truck industry, the Ford F-150 Lightning offers some work-ready features, such as an interior work surface. This work surface is all thanks to the engineers that implemented a way to stow the shifter, creating a flat surface between the front driver and passenger seats. Speaking of stowing, you’ve likely already seen the F-150 Lightning’s front trunk or “frunk.” Storing electric battery and motor components within the frame frees up space under the hood of the truck, which Ford engineers have converted into cargo space. It’s definitely a concept we’ll have to get used to, but talk about maximizing space.Within the frunk cargo area, the cab, and in the bed of the F-150 Lightning are power sources to power your worksite equipment and devices (the frunk alone has four different 120V outlets). The truck also stores 9.6kW of power for your devices and equipment—and as mentioned earlier, even your home.When you’re using the truck to power your tools on the jobsite, you might also choose to use the integrated work surface in the tailgate of the F-150 Lightning. The tailgate is made of durable materials, offers a flat surface for writing or measuring, features clamp pockets and tie-downs, and has integrated rulers, a cup holder, and a mobile device holder.And if all of that wasn’t enough to impress you, the F-150 Lightning comes with worksite lighting with its Enhanced Zone Lighting that can illuminate 360 degrees around the truck—including inside the bed. This truly gives a new meaning to the word “Lightning.”ACT NOWFord has stopped taking reservations for the F-150 Lightning at this time due to the volume it has already received. The company previously announced plans to almost double production of the truck to meet demand. Customers with reservations can begin converting those reservations to orders. Delivery is expected later this spring. HOW IT WORKSIf you’re confused about how these electric vehicles can work without a conventional engine and transmission, let’s break it down.In the Peterbilt 220EV, an inverter converts battery energy into power for the electric motor. Then the direct-drive motor powers the drive shaft. This eliminates the need for a transmission. Finally—and a must-have feature in electric vehicles in a “stop-and-go” application—is regenerative braking. But that’s just some of the equation; it’s important to understand as much as you can about propane autogas—the fuel itself and the all-important question of the cost of the fuel. At the heart of that question are pricing contracts negotiated with a propane provider. PROPANE BASICSLet’s start with the basics. Propane, sometimes known as liquefied petroleum gas or LPG, is a gas normally compressed and stored as a liquid. It is nontoxic, colorless, and virtually odorless; an identifying odor is added so it can be detected. Propane is used for many on-road applications, including transit shuttles, school buses, and Class 4-7 work trucks. When it’s used as a transportation fuel, it is referred to as propane autogas.Propane is primarily a byproduct of domestic natural gas processing, though some propane is produced from crude oil refinement. US propane supplies are abundant due in large part to increased supplies of natural gas, which is one of the many reasons it makes so much sense for work truck fleets. The actual amount of propane used by work truck fleets varies greatly. If you’re a US Postal Service contractor that operates regionally, you may use 1,100 or more gallons per month per truck.FUEL PRICING CONTRACTSThere are a number of important factors to consider before and during the contract negotiation process. A propane fuel provider will review factors including: your number of fleet vehicles; fueling infrastructure specifics such as location; and actual site costs, like electrical and concrete work.Propane autogas contracts usually run from three to five years. The key is to negotiate a multi-year propane autogas pricing contract that “locks in” the per-gallon cost over the length of the contract. This is advantageous because the per-gallon cost won’t fluctuate based on factors like supply or geopolitics. Your fuel price will stay the same, making it easier to budget long term.Propane autogas is cost effective without the necessity of grants or incentives to create a return on investment. In other words, the relative pricing of propane autogas compared with gasoline, diesel, or other alternative fuels makes the investment easy to both quantify and justify. INFRASTRUCTUREThere are three types of fueling available. First is through public propane stations, where your vehicles refill just like at a gasoline station. There are over 1,000 publicly accessible propane stations in the United States. A second way is mobile fueling, where a propane supplier brings a “bobtail” fueling vehicle to your site to fuel your vehicles. The third and most common way is by erecting an onsite station on your property. The station will include a propane tank that can range in size from 1,000 to 30,000 gallons and fueling dispensers, which are almost identical to gasoline or diesel dispensers in ease of use and refill speed. Some dispensers even have a built-in touchscreen and video monitor with a tutorial if a fleet driver needs assistance.By and large, most work truck fleet operators elect to install onsite fueling infrastructure; propane providers estimate more than 90% of fleets with propane vehicles choose this option. Propane providers prefer to provide the infrastructure because they can manage the ongoing maintenance, a value-add for the fleet operator. And you get the benefit of their industry expertise in managing costs.

CONTRACT & COSTOf all the transportation fuel sources (including diesel, gasoline, electric, natural gas, etc.), propane stations are the least expensive to install. A propane provider will install a fuel station on a fleet operator’s property for low cost, often even zero cost. But, negotiating the out-of-pocket cost of the station goes hand-in-hand with negotiating your propane per-gallon fuel cost. Be sure to also clearly work through any additional out-of-pocket expenses, like electrical panel upgrades and concrete, ahead of time.For a propane provider, annual gallons purchased are its main concern, which is predicated on the number of vehicles in your fleet and how and where they are used. If you plan to expand the number of propane autogas vehicles during the contract period, the propane provider can use anticipated gallons as a lever for better pricing on the front end of your contract.Other questions to ask: Is there an onsite fuel management system currently in place, or does that need to be added? If not, will the fleet add its own management system or will the propane provider install a dispenser with fuel management capabilities as part of the fuel contract?ONSITE BENEFITSThere is a plethora of reasons to consider an onsite fuel station. Among them: Having a bulk tank and a dispenser allows access to fuel 24/7. A propane provider can deliver 2,000 to 15,000 gallons per delivery depending on the size of the bulk tank versus vehicle-to-vehicle fueling, which is time consuming and laborious for the propane provider. That savings is passed on to the fleet operator.  An onsite propane fueling station qualifies your fleet for tax incentives.* A $0.376 per gallon tax rebate is available to fleets that install onsite fueling infrastructure and fuel their vehicles from it even if the propane provider supplies the equipment at no out-of-pocket expense.*(*The current tax credit expired in December 2021. The Build Back Better plan includes a five-year extension that has yet to pass.)RELIABLE SUPPLYAs mentioned, the United States has a huge supply of propane. The nation produces 28 billion gallons of propane annually and only uses 8 billion of those gallons domestically. Working with a propane provider that owns its own supply division ensures a fleet manager’s peace of mind that there will never be an interruption in service.From abundant supply to reduced emissions and cost, propane autogas makes a lot of sense for work truck fleets. You can tap into those benefits by negotiating a contract that includes long-term pricing and fueling infrastructure. Carrie Song, vice president of sales and renewable fuels at Neste, the world’s largest producer of renewable fuels refined from waste and residues, says renewable diesel is quite similar to conventional diesel fuel from a chemical component perspective. However, the difference between the fuels is found in the way they are produced. Renewable diesel is produced by refining fish oil, animal fat, and cooking oil. The renewable diesel process is essentially recycling an already existing product. The process of producing conventional diesel introduces a new energy into the atmosphere.Although renewable diesel and conventional diesel are chemically similar, renewable diesel carries an environmental benefit that conventional diesel can’t touch. Renewable diesel produces 75% fewer greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a fuel that can help fleets meet their health and safety goals as it contains no aromatics and is free of carcinogens, making it healthier for truck drivers and truck maintenance technicians alike. Renewable diesel is also a drop-in fuel, meaning it is compatible with conventional diesel powertrains today, giving fleet owners an alternative fuel option without requiring a powertrain conversion.NOT BIODIESELRenewable diesel is not to be confused with biodiesel—another fuel produced from cooking oils and animal fats. Song says the production process of biodiesel is easier than the process of producing renewable diesel. The production process of renewable diesel requires it to be properly treated to meet strict criteria. In the end, regardless of the fuel stock, be it cooking oil, animal fats, etc., the final renewable diesel product is clear, containing no color and with a very consistent quality. On the other hand, the consistency of biodiesel is more likely to vary between batches.Aside from the way they are produced, Song says another key difference between biodiesel and renewable diesel is a water component in the finished product. Renewable diesel contains no water, decreasing the chances of fuel contamination and prolonging its shelf life.SUPPLY & DEMANDNeste projects both the demand and supply of renewable diesel to grow. Song says Neste produced more than 1 billion gallons of product in 2021, and it projects a production of 1.5 billion gallons this year. Song also says Neste has seen more and more investment flowing into the renewable energy side of the industry. Today, renewable diesel is available along the west coast at 1,400 fuel points, and Neste aspires to work with fleet owners as well as customers to continue to grow the renewable diesel business. The goal of these advocacy efforts are to promote awareness and support incentive programs like the ones introduced by California and Oregon. These efforts depend on how quickly other states are willing to introduce incentive programs to produce a higher demand and greater supply as quickly as possible.But renewable diesel use isn’t completely dependent on incentive programs from state and local governments. Neste services customers in states along the east coast and nationwide through channel partners. Song ensures that Neste and renewable diesel has volume in the market, and that implementing the fuel in a fleet or on a nationwide scale requires no additional infrastructure because renewable diesel is compatible with the infrastructure that the United States currently has in place. This is due to the fact that renewable diesel’s chemical component is exactly the same as conventional diesel fuel and can work with current distribution networks.MONEY TALKSOne of the most common—or most popular—alternative fuels in the industry today is electricity. Electric vehicles are a great option for some work truck applications. But powering a fleet of EVs requires charging stations—which many fleet yards do not currently have. Then there is the cost of buying electric vehicles or converting existing vehicles to run on electricity. However, as mentioned above, renewable diesel operates on the infrastructure many fleets and towns already have in place. And the fact that renewable diesel can fuel existing diesel-powered vehicles negates any need for powertrain conversion. Therefore, from an infrastructure perspective, running a fleet on renewable diesel fuel requires no additional cost.In fact, fueling a fleet with renewable diesel will actually save money in maintenance costs. Maintenance costs for renewable diesel-fueled vehicles are lower because renewable diesel doesn’t carry the pollutants of conventional diesel fuel. Fewer pollutants entering the engine causes fewer issues and reduces the need to clean the diesel particulate filter as well as the frequency and costs of regeneration. As a result, vehicles running on renewable diesel experience less downtime, which allows them to stay on the road and on the job earning money.Maintenance costs for renewable diesel-fueled vehicles are lower because renewable diesel doesn’t carry the pollutants of conventional diesel fuel.”“

One Neste MY renewable diesel fuel customer, Cox Petroleum Transport, experienced a maintenance savings of 90%, or $30,000 in yearly savings, after switching to renewable diesel fuel.A ‘NOW’ OPTIONToday there are 11 million diesel-powered commercial vehicles on the road and in service, Song says. And those vehicles aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, as many fleets don’t have the capital or the time to offload diesel-powered vehicles and replace them with electric vehicles or convert their powertrain—much less, build on-site charging stations. But the reality is that the industry can’t wait until it is too late to make “green” decisions in their fleet operations.Renewable diesel is the drop-in, “now” solution, Song says. It’s a fuel that operates on diesel-powered vehicles that fleets currently own, and it is compatible with the infrastructure currently in place across the nation. In fact, Neste MY renewable diesel fuel is already approved by major OEMs as fuel options for their diesel vehicles. In addition, renewable diesel already has capable distributors in place that are ready to work with customers with their fueling needs. START TODAYCEMEX USA, a building material company, has used Neste My renewable diesel to fuel its construction vehicles since 2018. The company shared its sustainability and climate goals with Neste, and the companies worked together on a solution that helped CEMEX achieve its goals. Since then, the company has prevented more than 33,000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Song says that the CEMEX case, although a real-world example of what can happen when using renewable diesel fuel, is just a reference as to how companies can implement changes in their operations while benefiting both their business and the environment. However, just a few short years later, governments in many countries began to better understand the benefits that could come from corporations curbing their carbon emissions output, and new greenhouse gas mandates began to take effect by the early 2000s.SUSTAINABILITYIn the early 2000s, the use of data analytics began to help fleet customers run their operations more efficiently. We considered the major players of the industry and where we need to be from a body standpoint. We also evaluated the industry challenges that presented themselves last year and in 2020. These challenges are well known, with the supply chain presenting the biggest challenge, leading to chassis shortages among other shortages.Then on the electrification side, it was, again, determining the biggest players in the industry and figuring out how we can collaborate with each other. Our EAVX team spoke with and met with everyone in the electric vehicle space. We identified potential collaborations, one being our collaboration with Zeus Electric Chassis, Inc., which Modern WorkTruck Solutions has covered, to integrate JBPCO commercial bodies, utility bodies, and cargo management systems with the Zeus Power Platform. We also focused on specific body types, such as refrigeration, walk-in van, and service bodies with different manufacturers like Morgan Olson, Morgan Truck Body, and Reading Truck. From an industry standpoint, I expect to see the industry to continue working through supply chain issues this year. However, I do expect supply to catch up with demand and for us to eventually come out of these shortages. The backlog is still high for components and vehicles. And not only is the backlog for vehicles high, but demand is still rising. But once we do come away from those shortages and demand is met, I expect there to be a pickup in the industry marketplace, and pressure on businesses to shift to “green” operations will bring on even more growth. This growth includes different chassis platforms, different engine components, and more to accommodate alternative fuels and reduce emissions and the impact on the environment. As far as EAVX is concerned, expect to see new product introductions in 2022.EAVX as a business unit speaks to JBPCO’s commitment in developing 

With EAVX, JBPCO has centralized the focus of the next generation into one business unit. The intent behind EAVX was to establish a tighter integration between the body and the chassis. Traditionally, there were two different streams of operations: those that work exclusively with the truck body, and those that work exclusively with the chassis. EAVX’s goal is to bridge the gap between the two and collaborate with different chassis manufacturers to enhance the electric value to the customer. You can put a truck body on any battery, but if we at EAVX can figure out ways to provide completed solutions for the end user that makes the work safer, more efficient, and more ethical, that’s where you find the value.EAVX is all about finding creative and innovative ways to provide value to the end user. And we can accomplish this through body design, weight structure analyses, and technology integration. It’s important to understand that EAVX will not produce work truck bodies. The bodies developed through EAVX partnerships will be bodies from brands that fleet owners already know, such as Reading, Morgan, and others. EAVX will provide the ideation and integration. Some of these bodies will be available to customers sooner than others, because our focus for this year continues to be establishing relationships and building partnerships with manufacturers in the industry. This year, we also aim to establish integrations with a new chassis platform (such as an electric chassis) and a current truck body that fleet owners use today. The chassis will be the variable in the beginning, but eventually EAVX will aim to revolutionize the body.With an electric chassis, the powertrain is replaced with a battery, which provides significantly much more room but also weighs more than a conventional powertrain. EAVX aims to explore how we can optimize the body with the new electric chassis. We want to explore and envision what the body can do—or maybe what we need to do to make it more efficient. For example, on a service body, we might find that it makes more sense to reduce its weight to balance out the weight from the addition of the battery.The reason JB Poindexter and Co. formed EAVX was because the group is the largest commercial service body provider in North America with each business unit focused on meeting the demands of the industry today. With the industry’s evolution toward more environmentally friendly vehicles, it only makes sense that JBPCO develop a new unit that can support its work truck body units within that space. Within EAVX is a research and development hub, testing artificial intelligence, robotics, lighting solutions, and more, to help us discover ways to enhance the overall value of the truck. At EAVX, we want to focus on the technical side of the chassis and body integration so that JBPCO’s body manufacturing units can focus on what they do best—building truck bodies. For EAVX, 2021 was all about establishing ourselves. At the end of 2020, EAVX was essentially a team of one. We grew the EAVX team to around 20 members by the end of 2021. Half of the team’s focus is electrification, and the other half is focused on the truck. Companies with a world-class fleet training program use telematics to discover the causes behind their most common and costly accidents. Then, they focus their training efforts on reducing those unsafe behaviors and preventing accidents. This process saves money, makes the training program more effective, and protects employees from harm.SAFETY & TELEMATICSSo, if your goal is to reduce accidents by basing fleet safety on your accident data, how should you do so? There are five steps you need to follow.1Of course, you need telematics programs or event video recorders to capture the data you need. However, you also need to invest in the right fleet safety training tools and programs.For example, you may choose to create your own safety training, but this is time-intensive and doesn’t guarantee results. Instead, we often recommend investing in a professionally-produced safety training program. There are many cost-effective options that guarantee large reductions in accidents.2Begin tracking accident data in order to determine what areas drivers need training. However, there are many factors that contribute to rear-end collisions, such as improper following distance, distracted driving, speeding, and more.Thus, it’s helpful to use event video recorders to see what caused the collision and categorize them as such. Most event video recorder or telematics software makes it easy to do so.3It’s important to determine the top unsafe behaviors that lead to your fleet’s most common and costly accidents.When determining these behaviors, factor in both what is common and what is costly. For example, your fleet’s most common accidents are likely backing, fixed object strikes, and rear-end collisions. These are not always serious, but they add up over time.On the other hand, a pedestrian or cyclist collision is rare, but it is extremely costly. While it’s possible none of your employees have caused one of these accidents, it’s still worth it to prevent.All that being said, your “Top Six List” won’t include events such as rear-end collisions, pedestrian strikes, or fixed object collisions. Instead, it will list behaviors that contribute to those events, such as distracted driving, failure to maintain a proper following distance, and failure to look ahead for pedestrians and cyclists.Remember, we don’t care as much about the accident type as the unsafe behavior that caused it.4When you hire a new employee, you train them on company policies, vehicle pre-trip inspections, how to log their hours, etc. However, you must dedicate time to training them on safety and defensive driving. It should make up the majority of your safety training.More specifically, spend time on your “Top Six List.” Make it clear that these are the most important unsafe behaviors to avoid.5Safety meetings are where the “six” come into play. It’s recommended to host a monthly safety meeting focused on one of your top six unsafe behaviors. Switch to a new behavior every month, and then repeat them in the second half of the year.This training cycle ensures that your employees will put time and attention toward avoiding those unsafe behaviors. Thus, your most common and costly accidents will go down.You can further supplement these safety meetings with videos, posters, and safety pledges. There are even services that will send you professionally produced safety training materials monthly.START TODAYYou won’t develop a world-class safety program overnight. It takes time. That being said, you don’t have much time to waste. Whether it’s the result of direct regulation of the vans and trucks in question or more restrictive carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions targets, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have responded by designing and building electrified vehicles to address the changing market. Numbers vary by analyst, but there is a consensus that more than half of the light-duty new vehicle market will consist of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and battery electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030. With so many electric vehicles coming onto the market, the light-duty truck market will not be immune to these changes. The latest e-hardware configurations will require new lubricants, often termed e-fluids, to address the challenges that arise with electrification.Conventional lubricants designed for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles aren’t specifically engineered for HEV and EV vehicles, so lubricant manufacturers are working diligently to engineer fluids that are tailored to electric fleets. Like traditional fluids, e-fluids should help protect parts under a broad range of temperatures while maximizing mechanical efficiency. Unlike traditional fluids, e-fluids must be compatible with new materials of construction and more sensitive copper componentry, deliver optimal electrical conductivity, and sometimes function as the motor cooling fluid. Lubricant manufacturers are engineering these fluids now to prepare for a future where ICE engines become less common and electric vehicles begin to dominate the market.MARKET STATUSCurrently, most light-duty trucks and vans contain internal combustion engines. The technology is well understood, and lubricant manufacturers have decades of experience in making fluids for these vehicles. Even though the market for ICE is mature, ICE innovation continues alongside EV innovation. But the market is changing, thanks to concerns about climate change driving some countries to ban ICE vehicles entirely from fleets within the next decade. These legislation changes are driving the trend toward battery electric vehicles. Currently, analysts predict that one-third of the light-duty vehicle market will consist of battery electric vehicles by 2030 with a second-third being hybrid electric vehicles. As the market evolves rapidly, it is both exhilarating and daunting to think of the number of emerging new e-driveline architectures and what characteristics the lubricants must have to accommodate these different configurations.LUBRICANT EVOLUTIONe-Driveline architectures incorporate the electric motor, inverter, and gearbox into the powertrain. As a result, the powertrain contains significantly more copper than a traditional vehicle. Many EVs contain nearly six kilometers of copper wiring in their batteries, windings, and e-motor rotors. In the latest hardware configurations, these elements can come into contact with the lubricant, therefore copper compatibility must be taken into account. Even unlubricated components above the oil line can be affected by corrosive vapors that may form as the motor runs. Corroded copper in an EV could cause electric motors to short out and fail, leaving commercial operators with expensive motor repairs or replacements.e-Devices still incorporate plastics in the same ways that traditional devices do (e.g. nylon bearing cases), but they also contain new materials of

These materials can be used in components such as wire coatings, lamination coatings, circuit boards, and insulating papers and are often polymers derived from silicon, acrylates, amides, imides, sulfides, or ethers. It is critical that the lubricant does not degrade the integrity of these materials. Additionally, e-fluids are designed to be more stable to oxidation and thermal breakdown as they must be able to stand up to potential high temperature excursions in the electric motors. Upon exposure to high temperatures, lubricants can degrade over time resulting in deposits and sludge that can harm components and vehicle operation. Unlike with their predecessors, electrical conductivity of e-fluids is an important concern. If the conductivity is too low, it can lead to static discharge that can cause pitting on the components. Conductivity that is too high on the other hand, can lead to current leakage, lower efficiency, and potential shock hazards. Viscosity and additive chemistry play large roles in keeping conductivity within its proper parameters.THERMAL PROPERTIESe-Fluids are designed to keep devices cooler, which keeps the motor operating at peak performance and extends the range available to the vehicle. The thermal properties of lubricants are an important factor in their performance these days, and engineers pay more attention now to the fluid’s thermal conductivity and heat capacity, as well as fluid density and viscosity profiles as they relate to heat transfer.Practically speaking, many lubricant manufacturers are reducing viscosity to enhance the lubricant’s thermal properties and improve its heat transfer capability. Lowering viscosity can also improve mechanical efficiency depending on the duty cycle—but that approach brings its own challenge. Thinner fluids have a risk of foaming or exhibiting aeration, and they typically have higher electrical conductivity, which is undesirable. Furthermore, the thinner fluid films associated with low viscosity fluids make it more difficult to protect parts like gears and bearings. Balancing these competing goals is one of the biggest challenges manufacturers face as they try to engineer e-fluids for light-duty trucks and vans.A CHANGING INDUSTRYAs the electrification of light-duty vehicles continues with increasing speed, fleet owners are going to have to change their thinking about what lubricants are appropriate to use in electric vehicles. No longer will traditional lubricants suffice to protect all of the proliferating types of vehicle hardware. Instead, specific e-fluids will be required to maintain the long-term protection of the drivetrain while avoiding damage to the wiring, optimizing electrical conductivity and improving efficiency.Lubricant manufacturers have a vital role to play in formulating their lubricants to meet and exceed the requirements for the latest generation of EVs.
