MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202030Journalists from local stations and newspapers as well as truck journalists across North America gathered in a recently renovated manufacturing facility for an announcement that had been kept a tight secret. Cameras pointed at a stage where representatives from Mack, the Roanoke Country Board of Supervisors, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, and others prepared for the big announcement.Mack Trucks’ announcement included the ribbon cutting of a new manufacturing facility, a government grant, and yes—a brand new truck model. Talk about starting off the new decade on a high note.RVOPerhaps Mack chose to make these announcements all at once because each affects the other immensely. The new manufacturing facility in Salem, Virginia, is dedicated to the assembly of the new Mack model. The government grant—$700,000 from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund—helps fund this project.Mack Trucks invested $13 million in the facility to establish Roanoke Valley Operations (RVO). Its investment is being used for equipment, tooling, and building enhancements in the 280,000-sq-ft facility. At full production, the facility will bring in 250 workers. This location was chosen for its proximity to Mack’s global headquarters and I-85 among other reasons.ABOUT THE TRUCKThe reveal of a new model took me completely by surprise, yet I’m glad of it. Mack Trucks hasn’t had a medium-duty option since 2002 when the Mack Freedom ceased production, and the new Mack MD is the brand’s long-awaited answer to those requiring medium-duty power in their daily operations. The truck is two years in the making from the initial idea to the product reveal. Mack sought the input of dealers in creating the truck, and according to Mack its dealers are plenty excited to get this truck on their lots and keys in customers’ hands. The MD comes in two models: the MD6, a Class 6 truck, and the MD7, a Class 7 truck. The MD6 has a GVWR of 25,995 lbs and does not require a CDL. The MD7 has a GWVR of 33,000 lbs. Drivers of the MD7 must be CDL holders. Both trucks feature the Cummins B6.7, an engine that pumps out 220 to 300 hp and 560 to 660 lb-ft of torque. The Allison 2500HS 6-speed automatic transmission is standard with an option for the Allison 2500RDS for PTO.Mack Trucks’ customers in the logging industry will now have a Mack option for their flatbed and straight truck needs. Other industries will benefit from the MD’s configurations for refrigerated, stake, dump, and tank applications.MACK DIFFERENCEThe MD stands out among other medium-duty trucks because of several reasons starting with its design. Inspired by the Mack Anthem, the MD features a bold, heavy-duty look in a medium-duty package. Other differentiators include:• 120,000-steel frame rails are standard• Eight available wheelbase lengths• Adaptable to a number of body applications• 103-inch bumper to back of cab• Short hood for visibility that complements the maneuverability of the truckMack Trucks is also partnering with Geotab’s Go Rugged solution in the MD. Go Rugged gives owners access to telematics data from their trucks using the latest GPS technology and advanced telematics capabilities. Owners can access this data from their MD through the Mack Uptime Center.MORE TO COMEWith the addition of the MD, Mack’s family of trucks now meets a variety of needs in the industry. Mack begins commercial production of the MD this summer. Once I get behind the wheel of the MD, I’ll bring the scoop back to you! MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202032OPERATIONSHow do fleet managers measure operational needs? Several approaches help quantify necessary functional requirements while filtering out end-user operator demands often communicated as needs. In the end, fleet managers are responsible for maintaining order between operational realities and requirements of the work that needs to be accomplished. Fleet departments are often viewed as red marks in organization budgets. Without understanding the importance and unsung accomplishments of fleet operations, it is easy to see them as expenses and operational necessities rather than assets that can increase productivity and lower the bottom line. Yet fleet managers can act as champions for their organizations and potentially turn a perceived expenditure into a tangible resource.SENSE FROM DOLLARSEvery successful company needs a sound business plan. Controlling costs and saving a few cents on every dollar From Cost Control to Improving Operational EfficienciesASSESSING YOUR FLEET’S NEEDS By Christopher Lyon
FEBRUARY 2020 www.mwsmAg.com modERn woRkTRUck solUTions 33spent can compound in the long run. Regulating expenditures within your control contributes to the success and solvency of an organization. This journey normally begins with leadership directing fleet managers to reduce overall operating expenses. Creating a business plan becomes a necessity. Taking the time to analyze fleet operating costs and address problems rather than cure symptoms can pave the way to long-term success. Some fleet managers fail to effectively execute long-range goals. This often occurs when management expects instant cost reductions, which fleet managers accomplish by: • Eliminating surplus vehicles and equipment• Extending service intervals• Deferring maintenance• Reducing parts inventoryAlthough these items may need to be addressed, they are short-term solutions and can increase overall operating expenses down the road. At some point, lengthening service intervals and postponing maintenance may result in costs that are greater than savings. Downtime is frequently overlooked as an expense that takes a toll on operational efficiency. Stocking enough inventory for maintenance and repairs as well as optimizing the amount of second-line equipment often brings greater financial savings in the long run. A CLOSER LOOKIn the vocational fleet world, inventory can be an asset or liability, and having the right type for your vehicles is critical to cost control. Fleet managers should periodically take a global view of their operations to assess inventory, prioritize needs, and take action to reduce costs. In the late 1890s, Italian economist Vilfredo Parerto suggested the principle of factor sparsity, or the 80/20 rule, which means 80% of effect comes from 20% of cause. This paved the way for ABC analysis. Although this principle is more commonly used in materials management, exercising the process behind it can give fleet managers cost control insights.ABC analysis is a way of categorizing inventory based on quantity and amount of resources consumed. Although there are no defined thresholds for each class, different proportions are weighted based on where they fit within the organization’s overall inventory. items account for a small amount of inventory but are
Modern WorkTruck SoluTionS WWW.MWSMag.coM FeBruarY 202034OPERATIONShigh in value and resource consumption items represent a moderate amount of inventory and moderate consumption of resources items account for a large amount of inventory and small consumption of resourcesTo put this numerically, equipment may only represent 20% of the fleet; however, it could account for 60% of operating costs. equipment would represent 30% of the fleet and 25% of operating costs, and equipment would account for 50% of the fleet and 10% of operating costs.Understanding the importance and use of these assets is key to overall cost control efforts. Your items normally account for specialty equipment, designed to accomplish specific tasks. However, this equipment often carries the highest acquisition and maintenance costs.DETERMINING OUTCOMEAs technology advances, fleet managers can no longer rely on what they have always purchased to continue their operational efficiencies. Conducting front-end research and following a systematic approach will help lessen the burden of determining operational requirements of work vehicles.Begin by defining what the work truck needs to do. The following questions should be answered before designing a new vehicle: • What is the primary purpose of the truck?• What are the towing payload requirements?• What is the unit’s operating environment? After addressing these basic functional questions, look at performance requirements and technical solutions for increasing efficiency. What is the desired maximum speed at full capacity? Have you accounted for special equipment—dimensionally and operationally?Consider the operating conditions and environment. Will this equipment be used in urban or rural conditions? What is the anticipated topology (e.g., is terrain mostly hilly or level)? Take environmental factors into account. Will the vehicle operate in snowy and salty conditions?Adjusting your truck design to these metrics can decrease costs through risk mitigation, reduced maintenance, and extended truck life. For example, consider upgrading transmission and engine cooling systems for vehicles operating in high-temperature regions. Relocate air tanks or use remote drain systems in humid climates. Use heated mirrors, windows, and upgraded air dryers in extreme cold regions.Review maintenance histories of your existing fleet. Looking at failure points can help identify where adjustments are needed. Either changing the specification or matching the proper type of equipment for the defined job will ensure optimal efficiency.LEVERAGING DATAUsing accurate data to drive design changes can improve performance and assist in reducing operating expenses. Taking a few steps to capture specific data can help fleet managers increase operational output and productivity. For most businesses and organizations, resources are limited. Collecting specific information on units that consume the highest amount of resources (i.e., fuel, maintenance, acquisition cost) will likely provide data that can be turned into savings by analyzing and adapting operations.ABOUT THE AUTHOR Christopher Lyon serves as NTEA’s director of eet relaons. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202036OPERATIONSHow Do Those in the Field Really Feel About Telematics?THREE FLEET PROFESSIONALS DISCUSS TELEMATICS FOR THEIR FLEET
FEBRUARY 2020 www.mwsmAg.com modERn woRkTRUck solUTions 37AQA telematics system allows work truck fleet professionals to capture and analyze meaningful data about a fleet’s operation—information they can use to improve productivity, reduce downtime, and save money. Or at least that’s how they are advertised. Three fleet professionals invested in telematics for their work trucks and equipment. Below they weigh in on how their companies use the data to tackle challenges and optimize performance in their fleets and whether they think telematics systems are all they’re cracked up to be., fleet manager, Carter Machinery: When we first invested in telematics, it was driven by fuel expense management. Fuel prices were through the roof, and we were trying to get our arms around how to control that expense. We were also trying to understand what was driving our fuel costs other than price per gallon. fleet manager, Wheeler CAT: The biggest thing was to make sure our telematics system collected in-state and out-of-state miles. One of the biggest changes is how we make better decisions with our equipment. Telematics has become an integral part of everyday use. It also allows us to do a lot of accident investigations. We’ll also install all the equipment, whether it’s an all-in-one power system, a welder, or a crane. Telematics can track information from that equipment. The other big thing is that it's allowing us to dispatch differently. We can look at a job to see if a big truck is needed, so we don’t waste time and money sending a big truck every time. It also gives us a much quicker response time to our customers.VP of product support, Roland Machinery: There's a lot of data. And it's really just understanding and having the time to analyze that data correctly and then putting that into a program or a policy change and monitoring it. Telematics runs on all of my vehicles, and I analyze data on 270 trucks every day. Before we had telematics, I could maybe get to two or three trucks each day to see the information. I had to call that technician and have them get the
Modern WorkTruck SoluTionS WWW.MWSMag.coM FeBruarY 202038OPERATIONSinformation off the truck. Now I can pull reports and drop information into Excel to see everything I need to see. It tells me the vehicle replacement rate, repairs and maintenance, and bill usage. For me, a big part of using telematics is goal setting. Do I just want to reduce costs, or do I want to improve uptime for my drivers? How do I optimize our equipment to keep the downtime minimal for those drivers? We use telematics on our service-related assets because they drive our fuel expenses. We get a better understanding of idle time and its correlation with fuel expense. We can also understand the differences in idle time by region and measure productive versus nonproductive idle time. For example, we can tell if it is different in our mining region versus our construction region. We also frequently use the data to go back and try to understand IRP/IFTA fuel reporting metrics. And we use it for maintenance, understanding what the current hours are on a piece of equipment. We get ignition on/off data, location data, diagnostic trouble codes, and information about driver behavior such as speed alerts, harsh braking, and acceleration. You might have an operator who for some reason burns more fuel than another operator, even though it’s the same machine and the same work. Telematics data helps us understand why that might be so we can use it for training opportunities. It's a part of our daily operations. It makes us more efficient, especially on the sales and support side, because we're developing routes and weekly travel schedules based on some of the mapping we can do. On the field service side, it has made us more efficient in situations where we know a technician is out on a light job that won’t take him very long. We can send him to another job, because we can see which technician is closest. We can see how many hours and how many miles are on the vehicle, so we have a better idea of how often we need to down a vehicle. We can plan maintenance to help prevent some of the breakdowns. It gives us options. We can look at technicians’ schedules and plan the maintenance or repairs around those times, which helps us tremendously. We can make a strategy on how to effectively do this, and it gives us more communication between the fleet department and the supervisor of that technician, as well as the technician. Now with the data, we can do a little bit better. We’re not necessarily only looking at the odometer reading. It’s also the engine hours. The technicians now understand that it’s important to focus a little bit more on engine hours. You could push a truck to whatever the maintenance interval is on an odometer, but it might have needed two oil changes in that time in terms of engine hours. Before, we never really had any visibility to that. It would cripple a lot of stuff I can do, and it would probably force me to hire at least two full-time positions. Previously without telematics, I had to collect every field receipt and review them to make a log showing where they drove, how many miles they drove every day, and in which jurisdictions. If the miles were in different states, you had to compile that data for each quarter and submit it along with information about fuel purchases. It was about a 40-hour report. Having telematics cuts that down significantly. We could not exist today without the data we get from telematics. We monitor every single system on every single machine. We have over 3,000 pieces of mobile equipment and 140 field service trucks that our telematics team is monitoring daily. We get alerts, and we know exactly what systems are failing. Telematics on the equipment is indispensable. If you're not using telematics, you're tying your hands behind your back regarding what you can do with your fleet and how it can help your company, your customers, and your employees. It allows us to be more efficient. There are definitely benefits. Make sure you understand what you want to accomplish with telematics before you jump on. Find a provider that can give you the full spectrum of what it is you need—not just one piece of it. Make sure you understand what it is you're trying to accomplish, and be careful of data overload. The first and foremost question is, "What do you want out of it?" What is driving your need to do this? That dictates what kind of system you need. IMPROVE RESULTSWhen a work truck is down, it isn’t productive or profitable. A truck that isn’t used efficiently or effectively can also drive fleet costs higher. According to these fleet professionals, fleet managers can better track work truck and equipment usage and maintenance needs with the right telematics system.FOR MORE INFORMATION Find out more about work truck soluons and the benets of telemacs for your eet, visit www.millerwelds.com/worktruck.
MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202040OPERATIONSFor heavy-duty truck fleet managers aiming to maximize safety, productivity, and profitability while minimizing downtime and the cost of doing business, having an integrated strategy for trailer lighting is key. However, an effective fleet lighting strategy requires more than simply buying a replacement bulb when one burns out. Instead, enhancing the reliability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of the fleet’s lighting involves considering all the relevant concerns—from headlamps to taillights—over the lifetime of the equipment. A comprehensive lighting strategy should also address the integration of superior technologies, including how all the components of the system, such as LED lighting, smart trailer lighting systems, data telemetry, wiring harnesses, and power cables work together. To accomplish this, fleets are increasingly partnering with lighting manufacturers for integrated “nose-to-tail” solutions for ensuring a smooth transition to updated and superior technologies. A single supplier approach also reduces part costs through bulk purchasing programs while also eliminating the time and labor of managing many suppliers and thousands of part SKUs.By doing so, fleets are realizing significant savings by minimizing inspection, replacement, labor costs, downtime, and CSA fines, while at the same time improving fleet safety and productivity. For some large fleets, the savings can be millions of dollars.LIGHTING INTEGRATIONAlthough every fleet trailer requires fully functioning lamps from head lamp to taillight for safety and compliance, more than 25% of all CSA violations in the heavy-duty trucking Do You Have an Integrated Strategy for Lighting?LIGHTING STRATEGIES CAN MINIMIZE COSTS, DOWNTIME, AND CSA FINES, SAVING MILLIONSheavy-duty feature
FEBRUARY 2020 www.mwsmAg.com modERn woRkTRUck solUTions 41industry are related to lighting outages from inoperable lamps or defective/broken lights. As such, it represents one of the largest annual expense items when CSA fines, maintenance, downtime, and repair are factored together. Lighting outages also attract the attention of law enforcement and can trigger further scrutiny into driver logs, brake wear, tire tread, or other issues, which can lead to additional fleet downtime and fines.“Fleets with a complete lighting strategy in place will not only enhance the safety of their fleets but also virtually eliminate CSA and other fines as well as minimize the cost of repair and downtime,” Kevin Cornelius, global marketing manager of power delivery at Grote Industries, a global manufacturer and expert in lighting and safety equipment for trucking fleets, says. COMPARISON Because of the sheer number of total lamps in vehicle fleets, switching to LEDs from incandescents is a core aspect of any fleet lighting strategy. With an expected 15-year lifespan of a trailer using quality LED lamps, the savings can amount to millions of dollars including the cost of repair, replacement, and downtime, depending on the size and usage of the fleet.A quick review of the numbers shows that hidden costs of incandescent lamps can add up. A basic incandescent stop tail turn lamp may cost $6. Installation costs about $11.25 ($45/hour at 15 minutes) and downtime about $30 ($60/hour at 1/2 hour) for a total of $47.25.In fact with incandescent lamps, a 1,000-trailer fleet of Class 8 trailers would experience about three failures per day, with the costs and penalties ranging $50 to $300 per inspection. Combined with the average cost to provide, change, or repair these bulbs, this would cost about $3 million averaged out over the life of the trailers.Compare this with an expected 15-year lifespan of the same trailers using LED lamps. With no unplanned maintenance or CSA points, the total cost of about $165,000 would save more than $2.8 million over this period. Most headlights are still equipped with halogen or high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps. However switching to LED technology can provide significant advantages, Cornelius says. Because the color of LEDs is closer to that of daylight than the yellowish hue of halogens, it appears brighter and can better illuminate details of objects in the distance. They also
Modern WorkTruck SoluTionS WWW.MWSMag.coM FeBruarY 202042OPERATIONShelp a driver see more at the edge of the road, where traditional lamps tend to fade out even on high beam. This helps the driver spot vehicles, pedestrians, signage, road conditions, and wildlife more quickly and easily to prevent collisions and driving errors.LED BENEFITSSince LED headlights can last 30,000 hours—about 10 years of service for a commercial truck—they can also dramatically reduce the risk and cost of unscheduled downtime to service failed headlights, as well as cut down on the number of fines and points against the driver and the fleet’s CSA scores if cited by law enforcement.Although LED replacement kits are available, some may not be DOT approved. Replacement bulb kits designed to convert halogen lamps to LED must be marked with the DOT symbol. Because cars and heavy-duty trucks are so different in size, shape, configuration, and use, LED headlamps should be specifically designed for Class 7 and 8 trucks, not coming from headlamp manufacturers trying to adapt a passenger car design to satisfy truck requirements, Cornelius says. When considering full trailer lighting integration, the complete range of trailer lights should be reviewed. This would include stop tail turn lights, rear turn signal lamps, and stop lamps. To further enhance visibility and compliance, it would also include clearance marker lights, license, and backup lights. If the fleet is not ready to switch completely, Cornelius says some lighting manufacturers offer an LED lamp option that looks like an incandescent lamp and connects to the incandescent pigtail. This means less work on trucks and trailers to make the switch and provides the option of changing out failed incandescent lamps with LEDs to make the conversion gradually.SMART SYSTEMSBecause lighting outages can be so costly, fleet managers sometimes look to innovative smart trailer lighting systems that can help to prevent or proactively handle most lighting outage and maintenance issues. For example, one device called the Grote Guardian Smart System can be easily integrated into the trailer’s wiring harness system at the nose box. The fully integrated smart system delivers real-time status of the entire trailer lighting system and works with any type of lamp. The system’s sensor continuously monitors voltage and current passing through the wire harness. The system alerts a driver, maintenance technician, or fleet manager using a smartphone app or it can be connected to the on-board telematics system. All the information on status and any changes are logged in cloud-based storage for data analysis. The same sensors could be used to measure temperature, humidity, pressure, or other factors as part of a true headlight to taillight solution as the industry moves more toward monitoring of additional trailer functions. One aspect of the next generation system that is of interest to fleet managers is a “geo-fence” feature that will automatically upload trailer lighting and electrical system information and send alerts for priority attention as needed. Geo-fencing allows a virtual geographic boundary to be drawn around a specific location, such as a facility or repair depot. When the geo-fence is crossed and there is a lamp or light outage, it can be programmed to automatically trigger a warning via e-mail or text message to appropriate personnel. Once the trailer crosses the established geo-fence, the maintenance manager is immediately notified. This approach could even allow for automatic electronic ordering of replacement lamps if desired. The bottom line is that the industry is changing. So fleet managers who delay incorporating the best, most cost-effective technologies available will fall further and further behind the competition.Fortunately those who partner with an industry expert to implement an integrated lighting strategy will find it easier than expected and reap growing benefits down the road. With a little expert guidance and cooperation, they could significantly improve fleet safety and potentially save millions in repair, replacement, downtime, and CSA fines over the lighting equipment’s usable lifespan.FOR MORE INFORMATION Find out more about trailer and truck lighng soluons, visit www.grote.com/guardian. A smart system delivers real-time status of the entire trailer lighting system. Light status and changes are logged in cloud-based storage for data analysis, and fleet managers are alerted of any light faults.

FEBRUARY 2020 www.mwsmAg.com modERn woRkTRUck solUTions 45Cloverdale Equipment Company is a full-service construction equipment sales, service, and rental company. Celebrating 56 years in business in 2019, the company has three locations, including Greater Cleveland, Ohio, Norton Shores, Michigan, and Oak Park, Michigan, which serves as its headquarters. The company’s inventory includes aerial work platforms, boom trucks, cranes, and material handling equipment including forklifts and telehandlers, as well as other construction equipment. As a mechanic, Jack Preimesberger works primarily on servicing Cloverdale’s equipment and vehicles, while occasionally working on customer trucks. He also sets up new tractors, setting up the hydraulics, mounting fenders and lighting, and doing a full inspection before they’re ready to hit the road. Having been in the business for years, Preimesberger has used a variety of tools and equipment, including air compressors. Preimesberger was a long-time user of reciprocating air compressors before switching to a rotary screw air compressor when Cloverdale upgraded to a new service truck and compressor. This made Preimesberger the perfect candidate to share his experience and story on how the change from a reciprocating compressor to a rotary screw compressor improved his workflow.CHALLENGESHow would you describe your reciprocating air compressor? When asked this question, Preimesberger used words like “heavy” and “deadweight.” His reciprocating air compressor was running the best it could, but it wasn’t able to produce the air volume or maintain the air pressure needed to complete jobs efficiently. However, for Preimesberger, this all changed when a new service truck from Summit Truck Bodies showed up in his shop, equipped with a VMAC Hydraulic Driven 40 CFM Rotary Screw Air Compressor.SMARTER COMPRESSOR“I first learned about VMAC when Cloverdale purchased a new service truck from Summit, and it came with a VMAC Hydraulic Air Compressor,” Preimesberger says. “The performance was pretty impressive; it maintains lots of air pressure and gives air on demand.” Though the performance of the VMAC air compressor impressed him, it was the system’s sophisticated technology that blew Preimesberger away.“This hydraulic air compressor monitors temperatures, pressures, and controls whether or not the unit can start building air,” Preimesberger explains. “If it’s too cold the VMAC Hydraulic will limit its use to protect the system and warm it up first. If it gets too hot it will shut off, again to protect itself. A lot of compressors aren’t equipped with this smart technology; they will run until they burn themselves out.”These features described by Preimesberger are the reason why the VMAC Hydraulic Driven Air Compressor is known for having the most advanced control system available. The digital controls are easy to use and extend the compressor life by automatically protecting it in extreme environments and climates, which is much appreciated in areas like Michigan, where temperatures regularly drop below freezing in the winter. CHECK ALL THE BOXESFor Cloverdale, the VMAC Hydraulic Driven Air Compressor checked off all the boxes on the company wish list, which included performance, weight savings, and longevity. “It gives the performance we’re all looking for,” Preimesberger confirms. The 40 CFM VMAC Hydraulic is also up to 260 lbs lighter than comparable units, which allowed Summit to load up the truck with more equipment and tool boxes for Cloverdale during the build process. This hydraulic system is also smaller than the previous air compressors Preimesberger was using—the footprint on the truck is noticeably decreased. But again, it’s the system’s smart technology that’s the difference maker for Preimesberger: “I like to see technology integrated into equipment to improve working conditions. The fact that this system is so well monitored is what I like best. Seeing it internally controlled and making adjustments based on temperature to avoid errors and damage is the biggest plus of all.”The change to VMAC Hydraulic Air Compressors had such a positive
Modern WorkTruck SoluTionS WWW.MWSMag.coM FeBruarY 202048OPERATIONSimpact on the service department at Cloverdale, more trucks from Summit Truck Bodies with VMAC Hydraulic Air Compressors are currently being built. “Summit is a great company with great people,” Preimesberger notes. “We’re happy to work with them on our truck builds.” And when asked if he would recommend VMAC to someone considering a new air compressor, his answer was simple and decisive: “Hell yeah, I would!”SUMMIT TRUCK BODIESSummit Truck Bodies manufactures custom-designed truck bodies, including the ones that Cloverdale ordered. Its manufacturing facility is centrally located in Wathena, Kansas, and the company ships its trucks throughout the United States and Canada. David Thornberry is the Summit Truck Bodies sales representative who worked with Cloverdale on the company’s latest truck builds.“Cloverdale is a very knowledgeable company,” Thornberry says. “They know what they want and what they need—the only real change they’ve made to their trucks in recent years is changing the air compressor to a VMAC hydraulic system.”The VMAC Hydraulic Air Compressor that Cloverdale uses is the air compressor of choice for Summit Truck Bodies, as it is both lightweight and compact. Upfitting trucks with the lightest weight and compact equipment allows Summit to better fulfill its customers’ requests for more storage for tools and equipment on their trucks. “Weight is extremely critical, and it’s what sets VMAC apart from the alternatives,” Thornberry explains. “When you’re spec’ing out a 19,500-GVW chassis, there’s a limited amount of payload to work with, so freeing up an extra 260 lbs makes all the difference in the world.”Thornberry has been with Summit for five years, and like Preimesberger, has nothing but positive things to say about the company. “This is a great family-owned business. I love that everything at Summit is done in-house. It’s got a really good feel here.”And when asked for his closing thoughts on VMAC, Thornberry’s advice is this: “When you’re building a service truck, everyone is doing the same thing, and that’s operating air tools. If you need a hydraulic driven air compressor, go straight to VMAC.”Overcome the challenges of a reciprocating air compressor, and shed a few pounds with a hydraulic air compressor solution.FOR MORE INFORMATION Find out more about on VMAC 40 CFM and 60 CFM Hydraulic Rotary Screw Air Compressors, visit www.vmacair.com/hyd. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202050MAINTENANCEFor proper truck maintenance, there is a checklist of equipment-maintenance items to review before hitting the road. In most cases, the standard list includes oil levels and tire pressure, while trailer wheel maintenance is often forgotten. Checking the bearings inside the wheel mount to see if they need replacement or service is critically important to safe trailer operation. Here’s a step-by-step guide to maintaining these important pieces of trailer equipment during your annual maintenance checks.(DIS)ASSEMBLY REQUIREDWhen disassembling a tire from a trailer, it’s important to be particularly careful: Damaging the hub or spindle when you’re removing components can turn a simple maintenance job into an expensive, full-assembly repair.Remove the tire and wheel assembly, hubcap, cotter pin, adjusting nut, and washer. Then, gently pull the hub assembly toward you, which will loosen the outer bearing cone assembly. Once it’s loosened, remove it and pull the hub assembly off the spindle. This should include the inner bearing cone assembly, inner cup, How to Maintain Your Trailer Wheel Bearings for Long LifePROPER MAINTENANCE IS THE KEY TO LONGEVITY By Rick Dominlight-duty feature

Discard the seal and take the inner bearing cone assembly off the hub.Assess the bearing assemblies. If they are damaged or corroded, it’s time to replace them using a cup driver or mild steel bar to remove the inner and outer cups from the hub assembly. If they are not damaged and you are just cleaning the assemblies, you can skip this step. Once the assembly is apart, assess the bearing’s condition.ASSESS THE BEARINGUsing kerosene or mineral spirits, remove all the old lubricant from the hubcap, hub assembly, spindle, bearings, and cups as well as other components. Once the surface is clean, you’ll be able to assess whether there is any significant damage to the hub and spindle. If the damage is minor—debris, nicks, or burrs—remove it with a fine file, wire brush, emery cloth, or honing stone. If the damage is not repairable, it’s time to replace the hub and spindle.Next examine the bearings and cups for wear, discoloration, pitting, corrosion, or other types of damage. If necessary, replace the bearings and cups. PROPER LUBRICATIONApply a thin film of grease on the spindle, races, seal, and inside the hub and hubcap. The grease will prevent dry startups and protect metal components from corrosion and premature bearing damage.Next pack the tapered roller bearings with an approved grease. When using traditional greases (NLGI No. 1 and 2), you should force a ring of grease into the entire circumference of the wheel hub until it is halfway full. If the hub is packed more than halfway full, it might cause churning and higher temperatures, which can damage the bearings. Then, coat the hubcap inner wall.REASSEMBLE THE HUB Use a cup driver or mild steel bar to drive the inner cup and outer cup into the hub assembly until seated solidly against the hub shoulders. Be cautious not to damage the cup surfaces—and never use a bearing cone assembly to drive the cup.At this point of the reassembly, you should install the inner bearing cone assembly and replace the grease seal. Follow the manufacturer’s specifications for seal-lip direction. Use the proper installation tool to avoid damaging the seal. Next slide the hub assembly back over the spindle, taking care not to damage the seal against the spindle. Finally install the outer bearing cone assembly, washer, and adjusting nut on the spindle. Modern WorkTruck SoluTionS WWW.MWSMag.coM FeBruarY 202052MAINTENANCEBEARING ADJUSTMENTAfter the hub assembly is reassembled, it’s important to ensure the proper bearing adjustment. If the adjustment is incorrect, it will shorten performance life in bearings, seals, and other related wheel-end components. First tighten the adjusting nut to 25 ft-lbs while turning the hub. This should create a slight bind on the bearing indicating the parts are seated correctly. Back the adjusting nut off one-sixth to one-quarter of a turn to allow 0.001-inch to 0.005-inch end play. Place the locking clip over the adjusting nut and insert the cotter pin to prevent the adjusting nut from backing off.Using a dial indicator, mount the base as close to the center of the hub as possible. Once it’s near the center of the spindle, set the indicator to zero. Hold the rotor at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock and push it axially while oscillating the wheel back and forth. Stop and read the indicator. Then do the same while pulling the rotor toward you. Bearing endplay is equal to the total indicator movement, which should be 0.001-0.005 inches. If not, rotate the axle nut in the appropriate direction and recheck bearing clearance.Once you’ve completed all your checks, reinstall the hubcap and tire and wheel assembly remembering to torque lug nuts according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. TAKE NOTEAlways follow the trailer/axle manufacturer’s maintenance schedule recommendations. Consider performing trailer wheel bearing maintenance before storing your trailer for extended periods of time. Moisture in the hubs can lead to corrosion of the bearing assemblies. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202056TECHNOLOGYAside from the cost of buying your fleet vehicles, fuel and maintenance are the highest expenses of any fleet program. Ever-fluctuating gas prices make it hard to predict what you’ll pay at the pump each week. While it’s impossible to control the cost of fuel, managing the expenses of vehicles, including gas consumption, is possible. Implementing a fuel management system that’s integrated with the right fuel cards can optimize fuel use, mitigate fraud, and ultimately save your company a lot of money. No matter the size of your fleet, there are many ways to manage productive usage of your vehicles and gas consumption, as well as keep your drivers on the right course. Implementing a fuel program gives you insights into your company’s fuel purchasing practices and shows where you can cut costs and prevent fraud or theft. MANAGEMENT & REPORTSGood fuel management systems have custom reporting tools that enable managers to spot fuel card discrepancies—which affect your bottom line. The key to a good fuel management system is the accuracy of the data. There is so much data that these programs are able to collect. At first, it can be awesome to have so much information at your fingertips. But on second look much of the How Fuel Management Systems Save MoneyDRIVE SAVINGS WITH FUEL CARDS By Stuart Lamm
FEBRUARY 2020 www.mwsmAg.com modERn woRkTRUck solUTions 57data, albeit interesting, doesn’t help manage the fleet. When selecting a system, focus on information related to fueling at the pump. The accuracy of this data is crucial for two reasons: 1) you’ll plan your budgets and schedules around this data; and 2) when data is inaccurately reported, it can affect how you handle a potential fraudulent situation. Wrongly accusing a driver of stealing gas using a company fuel card would be awkward at best.TAKE CONTROLA company fuel card or business gas card allows drivers to purchase fuel for company vehicles without the hassle of reimbursements or worrying about cash transactions. A fleet card works like any other credit card but also collects additional fuel transaction information that helps fleet managers gain control over fuel purchases and prevent theft. Some fuel cards can be locked to approve certain purchases and even authorized for fuel only to protect against unauthorized spending. Save your driver from going into the store by approving to pay only at the pump. FOR YOUR FLEETThere are many options when deciding on which fuel cards will best meet your needs. Some can only be used for specific fuel brands so you can choose your fueling network, or you can pick a card with universal acceptance and give your drivers more options. Consider setting purchase controls such as fuel grade, diesel only, transactions per day, and gallons per transaction. Each card will offer varying payment options and terms.Additionally, you can negotiate a better rate for gas if you commit to one fuel company. Reach out to a company and talk about your needs and where the fleet travels the most to negotiate better rates. Your company can be assured the best rates by using only that fuel company’s stations to gas up. Once the deal is in place, notify your fuel card company and they will ensure that you’re billed at the correct rate.TRACK FUEL METRICS A good fuel management system will send fleet managers real-time reporting, updates, and alerts to stay informed of driver purchases and possible fraud. You can set custom alerts to monitor after-hours and unauthorized purchases. The best fuel management systems process fuel card purchases nightly and compare them to GPS data. This
Modern WorkTruck SoluTionS WWW.MWSMag.coM FeBruarY 202058TECHNOLOGYstep cross-checks the location of the purchase with the location of the fleet vehicle at the time. It should also verify the amount of fuel purchased matches the amount of fuel that was put into the vehicle. If an individual driver buys a certain amount of gasoline, but only a portion of it is showing up in the gas tank of the vehicle, verify what could account for the extra fuel: filling up a gas can or generator to be used at a jobsite, for example. If the excess fuel cannot be explained, the transaction should be flagged as a bad transaction. A fuel management system will greatly minimize the time you spend on administrative tasks and micro-managing drivers’ purchases by giving you access to monthly summary reports, weekly or bi-weekly vehicle management reporting, and immediate email alerts to report unauthorized spending activity. Manage your fleet and fuel use by using these new technologies that can maximize savings, increase productivity, and pinpoint areas of improvement across your entire fleet. With an array of restrictions, varying controls, and reporting capabilities, you could save your company thousands of dollars a year.ABOUT THE AUTHOR Stuart Lamm is the founder and president of BlueArrow Telemacs. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202060TECHNOLOGYCommon Issues Fleet Managers FaceAND HOW FLEET MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS SOLVE THEM
FEBRUARY 2020 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 61Managing a fleet isn’t the easiest job, no matter the size of your fleet. After all, our whole magazine is dedicated to solving common issues faced by fleet owners and managers on a daily basis.Although there are many issues fleet managers have in common, several issues fall under three categories: maintenance, money, and driver and customer satisfaction. These issues often overlap and affect each other. It’s important to ensure these aspects are well taken care of to avoid a domino effect that could ruin your operations. One way to monitor these issues and keep them in check is through a fleet management system. MAINTENANCEVehicles that aren’t well maintained or even moderately maintained end up parked on the lot in need of costly repairs. Keeping track of maintenance with a smaller fleet is manageable, but once your fleet hits double and triple digits, keeping track of scheduled maintenance can quickly get out of hand., a Texas-based provider of GPS fleet monitoring systems in all 50 states and Canada, provides its clients with proactive maintenance alerts. Its diagnostics feature runs a check on an engine and provides information on its condition. If a problem is detected, large or small, the fleet manager is alerted. Rhino’s system also sends alerts for routine maintenance such as an oil change to ensure your vehicles are in tip-top shape and ready for any job.is another fleet management platform that simplifies maintenance with customized forms for different vehicles, allows managers to set maintenance reminders, and offers reports to ensure DOT compliance.Speaking of compliance, ’s platform is committed to helping its clients meet compliance needs through easy-to-use solutions that are current with all the most recent government regulations. Another way to prevent maintenance and compliance issues is with inspections. Fleet managers should consider a system that simplifies this process. offers inspection solutions for commercial fleets. “EVIR, our patented verification system drives efficiency and can reduce inspection processing time by more than 50%, while helping to save costs,” Fred Fakkema, vice president of safety and compliance at Zonar, says. “For example, we partnered with City of North Port in Florida to improve pre- and post-trip inspections on their waste management fleet. After our
Modern WorkTruck SoluTionS WWW.MWSMag.coM FeBruarY 202062TECHNOLOGYintegration, the City found that they are better able to verify that their trucks are in proper working order and identify and address small issues before they ever have the chance to become larger and potentially catastrophic ones to a vehicle.”MONEYMaintenance and compliance affect your bottom line, but so does driver behavior. According to the Department of Energy, an idling engine on an unloaded medium-duty truck consumes more than 0.8 gallons of fuel in one hour. And that’s without using accessories such as the air conditioner or auxiliary equipment. Multiply that by the number of trucks in your fleet and the amount of time they idle each day, and you could have a number that scares you., a global fleet-management platform, offers a device (Geotab Go) that automatically tracks engine idle to allow managers to see when, where, and why idling occurs. Another company, (Advanced Tracking Technologies, Inc) features software that allows managers to analyze excessive speeding and even unauthorized usage. Managers receive real-time alerts when speeding is detected, and its platform offers 24/7 usage monitoring, allowing mangers to see when company vehicles are on the road. With this insight, managers can coach their drivers on ways to decrease idling and costly driver behaviors.Another fleet management option for managers to consider is . Its fuel reporting suite includes hard data on your fleet’s fuel expense, identifies potential fuel card abuse, helps reduce fuel use, and helps modify fuel-wasting behaviors.Driver behaviors go beyond engine idle and fuel costs. Hopefully your business has never experienced a lawsuit resulting from an accident, but that’s something for which every fleet-owning business should prepare. , a video-based safety and intelligence platform, uses cameras and video evidence to prove a driver’s innocence in a lawsuit. SmartDrive COO Jason Palmer says a SmartDrive customer has had 44 instances where an attorney called to file a lawsuit, and “after they sent a video of the incident, they never heard back from the attorney. This fleet hasn’t had a claim in the last two years that’s been over their deductible, and their bodily injuries have dropped 60%.” Palmer adds, “Time and time again, our customers tell us the system more than pays for itself—often within the first year of deployment. All it takes is one minor lawsuit and the amount saved pays for the program.”SATISFACTION Happy drivers, happy customers, happy managers, and a happy, growing
FEBRUARY 2020 www.mwsmAg.com modERn woRkTRUck solUTions 63business—those are aspirations we can all get behind. But it’s a lot easier said than done. As stated before, each category—maintenance, money, and happiness—affects the other. If your drivers are in well-maintained vehicles and don’t have to worry about changing a tire on a loaded truck or switching vehicles at the last minute because one wasn’t ready for the day, they’ll likely be happy. If your drivers are well coached, remain focused on the road, and exhibit money-saving behaviors, you’re likely to be happy. So how does this affect the customer? The link between these groups is traffic and route optimization—which affects managers, drivers, the bottom line, and the customer. Traffic is a stressor in many urban environments and should not be ignored when considering the truck to use, the fuel budget, driver availability, and the time range told to the customer. Traffic can be unpredictable. No one anticipates an accident when they get into their vehicle. To be as prepared as possible, some fleets incorporate systems that provide real-time delivery visibility, such as ’s route planning that includes real-time route tracking, automatic ETA alerts, and instant route updates. Another route-planning platform is . Its software has proven to cut operating costs by 10 to 30%. It reduces planning time and is customizable to your business’ needs. These solutions make a manager’s job easier, reduce driver stress, save fuel costs, and allow you to give your customers more accurate information and faster service. What does that mean for your business? Happy drivers + happy customers + happy managers = a growing business.IMPROVE BUSINESSIf your fleet faces issues in any of the areas mentioned above, perhaps it’s time for a change. But before you make decisions that could drastically affect your day-to-day operations such as parking trucks and laying off drivers, consider a fleet management system that could help you save money in ways that improve your business, not cripple it. There are multiple options for fleet managers, and we hope this piece will help get you started.FOR MORE INFORMATIONFind out more about eet management systems and which one is best for your business, visit www.mwsmag.com/technology-soluons.
