MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM JULY 202312INDUSTRY INSIGHTAQJUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER, ONE ELECTRIC VEHICLE MANUFACTURER IS MAKING WAVES IN THE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SEGMENT. THE COMPANY, MULLEN AUTOMOTIVE, LAUNCHED ITS NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLES, THE MULLEN ONE, MULLEN CAMPUS, AND MULLEN THREE, AT WORK TRUCK WEEK 2023. WE CHATTED WITH PAUL LOEWER, MULLEN’S DIRECTOR OF PRODUCT PLANNING AND MARKETING, TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE COMPANY AND FIND OUT WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE.PAUL LOEWERNow Introducing, Mullen Automotive!MWS: CAN YOU GIVE A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF MULLEN AUTOMOTIVE AND HOW IT GOT ITS START? LOEWER: In 2014, Mullen Automotive set out to create clean and scalable electric vehicles and energy solutions. Recognizing the impacts of global fossil fuel dependence, founder and CEO David Michery launched with the intent to accelerate electrification and adoption of electric vehicles. We’ve developed a complementary portfolio of products including a variety of both commercial and retail vehicles.MWS: WITH THE AMOUNT OF EV STARTUPS POPPING UP EVERY DAY IT SEEMS, WHAT SETS MULLEN AUTOMOTIVE APART FROM THE REST?LOEWER: Mullen Automotive is strategically aligned to provide our customers with products that are both new and familiar, with similar utilitarian layouts and designs that fleets are akin to. Upfitting our vehicles will prove simple. On the other hand, our vehicles have greater capacities and include advanced technologies that increase cost savings and lower emissions for fleets. Our advanced in-house telematics provide fleet managers and drivers with important information about performance, vehicle health, and location information to maximize uptime and increase revenue. Further, our vehicles are available this year with commercial production commencing in July 2023. Today, Mullen works diligently to provide exciting electric vehicle options in both the commercial and retail environments. Our vehicle portfolio includes the Mullen FIVE, MullenGT, Mullen ONE, Mullen THREE, Mullen CAMPUS, and Mullen-GO. By investing in a complimentary retail and commercial brand, Bollinger Motors, our vehicle line expands to include the B1, B2, B4, B5, and B6.MWS: CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT THE MULLEN ONE? HOW IS IT ANTICIPATED TO BE THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE US MARKET? LOEWER: The Mullen ONE is an all-electric Class 1 cargo van, anticipated to be the first of its kind in the US market. Page 15

JULY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 13The Mullen ONE’s height is less than 6.5 ft, meaning your driver can park the vehicle in a residential garage. As all OEMs have exited the small van space, we see that the market requires commercial vehicles of all sizes. The Mullen ONE fills the gap with a smaller commercial vehicle for fleets and provides an all-electric option as well. As states enact further regulations on vehicle sales, all-electric vehicles like the Mullen ONE will be crucial for small and large fleets alike.Production of the Mullen ONE is anticipated to begin in 2023 with product availability immediately following. Fleets interested in the Mullen ONE may request a demo or pilot at www.mullencommercial.com.MWS: MULLEN AUTOMOTIVE’S CLASS 3 VEHICLE, THE MULLEN THREE, WAS DESIGNED AS A LOW CAB FORWARD. WHY DID MULLEN’S ENGINEERS DECIDE ON THIS DESIGN, AND HOW WILL THE MULLEN THREE BENEFIT FLEETS?LOEWER: The efficient Class 3 low cab forward features a tight turning diameter of 38 ft and excellent visibility for superior maneuverability on narrow city streets. Even in reverse, maneuverability is a breeze with our standard backup camera and 7-inch display screen. This versatile chassis provides a clean top-of-rail for easy upfitting with bodies up to 14-ft long and over 5,800 lbs of payload. In addition, the design of the low cab forward chassis allows more cargo length within a given overall length.Production of the Mullen THREE is anticipated to begin in July 2023 with product availability immediately following. Fleets interested in the Mullen THREE may request a demo or pilot at www.mullencommercial.com.MWS: HAS EITHER VEHICLE BEEN USED OUT IN THE FIELD? IF SO, WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE?LOEWER: As we prepare our vehicles for production, we have had interest from companies in a variety of industries from leasing companies to airports, grocery stores to utility services, body upfitters to last-mile delivery services, and more. To date, we’ve entered into pilot agreements with multiple organizations; delivered vehicles to MGT Lease Company and the University of North Carolina Charlotte; and signed sales agreements with Randy Marion Automotive Group for 6,000 Mullen ONE cargo vans and 1,000 Mullen THREE low cab forwards. In regard to pilot programs, we have finished a successful pilot with Menzies Aviation, the world’s largest aviation services company, and have two further airport pilots ongoing. Our pilot programs have generated many positive reports including increased uptime, lower total cost of ownership, emissions reduction, positive vehicle use rates, and minimal maintenance.Mullen recently announced pricing for the Mullen ONE and Mullen THREE at $34,500 and $68,500 respectively. Our competitive prices paired with available state and local incentives, the $7,500 Federal Tax Incentive and other incentives like California’s Hybrid and Zero Emission Vehicle Incentive Program’s (HVIP) Class 3 $45,000 discount, makes our vehicles perfect for organizations looking to reduce emissions and increase cost savings. Those that attended Work Truck Week 2023 might have already seen the new Class 1 EV cargo van from Mullen Automotive, the Mullen ONE. Mullen first revealed the vehicle at the show in Indianapolis alongside its Class 3 low cab forward, Mullen THREE.Since then, Mullen has received a purchase order from Randy Marion Automotive Group (RMA) out of North Carolina, for 6,000 Mullen ONE vans. RMA also ordered 1,000 Mullen THREE EVs and 22 Mullen CAMPUS vehicles, a slightly smaller van with the same DNA as the Mullen ONE, purpose-built for microenvironments. Mullen (alongside RMA) has already delivered 39 Mullen CAMPUS EV cargo vans to various companies and anticipates multiple deliveries of its vehicles over the coming months.Mullen touts the Mullen ONE vehicle as the first of its kind to hit the US market—meaning the first Class 1 electric cargo van. So what is it about this vehicle that makes it special? Keep reading to find out.POWER OF ONEThe Mullen ONE is a Class 1 electric cargo van designed to maximize cargo space and payload while breezing through residential neighborhoods and cruising around narrow city streets. It has a 60-kW motor and a 42-kWh battery that offer a range of 110 miles. The Mullen ONE is level 2 charging capable at 6.6kW, with an estimated charge time of 7.5 hours. Further, the Mullen ONE includes regenerative braking technology, increasing battery state of charge in last-mile delivery environments. The Mullen ONE can accommodate a payload of 1,683 lbs and a cargo capacity of 157 cu ft—that’s 20% more cargo capacity than the average vehicle in its segment. The Mullen ONE features a 120-inch wheelbase and offers a turning radius of only 20 ft. And because the vehicle is only 6.5-ft tall, fleet drivers can park it in their garage overnight.Mullen Automotive uses a lithium iron phosphate battery pack in its Mullen ONE. The electric motor produces 80 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque with a top speed of 65 mph.FOR THE DRIVEREquipped with three cupholders, a four-way manual driver seat, adjustable headrests, a floor console, power locks and windows, air conditioning, sun visors, and cargo tie down hooks, the Mullen ONE electric work van includes all the necessary features of a classic work vehicle—with none of the emissions. O P E RRAATTIIOONNSS A Toll Management Solution that Simplifies Operations ONE SOLUTION FOR TOLL AUTHORITIES NATIONWIDE T he frequency of a fleet vehicle traveling toll roads depends on the location of the business or how far the fleet vehicle needs to travel to get to a job or perform the job Some businesses have very little interaction with tolls and toll roads other businesses however use them daily Large fleets that use toll roads on a regular basis know the headache of keeping toll passes paid and in order as well as registering vehicles to use the toll roads Thankfully there are toll management providers that can help Jason Walker shares about Bestpass a toll management provider and how fleets can benefit MWS WHAT IS BESTPASS AND HOW DID IT GET ITS START WALKER Bestpass is a comprehensive payment platform provider and leader in toll management solutions for commercial fleets of all shapes and sizes The company ensures data accuracy consolidates payments and saves customers time and money Headquartered in Albany New York Bestpass was founded in 2001 by truckers for truckers to create an easier solution for companies to manage tolls Bestpass was 24 MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW MWSMAG COM JULY 2023

Page 29

JULY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 25started as member benefit of the Trucking Association of New York (TANY) to offer its members toll management services for truckers operating in New York. Since then, it has become an independent company and expanded its partnerships with tolling agencies across the US. Bestpass covers 100% off all major toll roads across the country. MWS: WHAT TYPES OF FLEETS CAN BENEFIT FROM TOLL MANAGEMENT SERVICES? WALKER: Whether operating commercial vans or Class 8 work trucks, fleets of all sizes can benefit from using toll management services in areas where there are tolls. If vehicles use toll roads several times a month, fleets can save time dealing with back-office management and reduce the costs associated with tolls through subscribing to a toll management provider such as Bestpass. For service trucks, final-mile fleets, or other local or regional transportation providers where vehicles are expected to make multiple stops a day, every minute counts. Situations that create extra drive time for drivers are magnified. Surprisingly, there are still many companies that direct drivers to avoid tolls to save money. Depending on how many tolls drivers pass each day, the opportunity costs, such as fewer deliveries and longer drive time, and fixed costs, such as fuel, can easily negate any toll fee savings. When working with a toll management provider, much of the “busy work” dealing with toll-related tasks is avoided (we’ll get more into this later). Plus, since toll management providers such as Bestpass are the tolling authority’s largest customer, Bestpass receives discounted toll rates, which are passed down to its customers. These rates are better than what fleets can get through registering vehicles directly with some tolling authority. Whether it’s a large corporation with multiple locations and vehicles operating across the United States or a regional service provider, fleets can select a nationwide toll pass that covers all major tolls in the US or one of several regional passes Bestpass offers that best covers the tolls in the state(s) the fleet operates. MWS: WHY SHOULD A FLEET CONSIDER USING TOLL MANAGEMENT SERVICES VERSUS MANAGING TOLLS THEMSELVES?WALKER: It takes time to review toll bill statements for each vehicle registered with a tolling authority. Those problems compound when

Page 30

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM JULY 202326OPERATIONStoll roads used are managed by different authorities, which means separate bills from each. For instance, Texas has six different tolling authorities. If drivers travel throughout Texas, fleets will need to register each vehicle using those toll roads separately with the tolling authorities. Vehicles that aren’t registered and use toll roads receive a “violation” or a toll-by-mail letter with information about the vehicle that used the toll and an invoice, which costs significantly more than what a registered vehicle would pay. By using a toll management provider, there’s no need to register vehicles with each tolling authority. There is no such thing as a “toll manager” in a fleet, and that job typically falls on the shoulders of a fleet or safety manager. Managing that on your own is a lot of busy work, and it takes time away from completing tasks that are more important to the business. In fact, a large Bestpass customer significantly reduced the number of employees responsible for managing tolls after it began using toll management services. Before subscribing to toll management services, the company had 20 employees managing tolls. Now there is only one. When you work with a toll management provider, all vehicles included in a toll management plan are bundled into one account with toll bills from each vehicle funneled into one monthly bill. You can still access information on each vehicle included in the plan to see exactly when trucks went through a toll and the fees associated with them, providing visibility into the fleet’s toll usage to better forecast budgets. It also makes it easy for fleets to bill back customers for their toll usage. MWS: A BENEFIT OF USING TOLL MANAGEMENT SERVICES IS HELP WITH TOLL VIOLATIONS. HOW BIG OF A PROBLEM IS DEALING WITH TOLL VIOLATIONS AND HOW CAN BESTPASS HELP?WALKER: One of the biggest benefits of using toll management services is the reduction in toll overcharges vehicles can receive due to toll “misreads.” Occasionally, when a vehicle passes through a toll road, the cameras the tolling authority use are unable to capture the vehicle’s transponder when it exits the toll road, resulting in a misread. Even if you’re using a toll management service or are registered with a tolling authority directly, misreads still happen. This can lead to a vehicle being charged more than it should have for its toll usage. A toll management provider has your vehicle plates on file and identifies when misreads are happening for you. Working with a toll management provider can also help fleets reduce violations or toll-by-mail fees they receive from unregistered vehicles passing through tolls since it’s easier to manage all company vehicles using toll roads under one account. When vehicles do receive a violation because a company didn’t register a vehicle with a tolling authority through its toll management provider, it’s easy to allocate the violation to the specific vehicle and have it registered to prevent future violations. MWS: WHAT RESULTS SHOULD A COMPANY EXPECT TO ACHIEVE BY IMPLEMENTING TOLL MANAGEMENT SERVICES INTO THEIR OPERATIONS?WALKER: As mentioned earlier, since Bestpass works directly with tolling authorities and receives discounted toll rates that are passed down to our customers, vehicles using Bestpass are guaranteed the best possible rate each time they use a toll. Those savings can add up quickly depending on how many vehicles are in the fleet. Fleets that work with Bestpass typically see a 90% or more reduction in violations. This can save fleets hours in the back-office managing paper bills (violations) and reduce violation fees and opportunity costs associated with paying staff to rectify violations instead of working on other important tasks. With Bestpass, managers also can incorporate toll spending into your vehicle expenses, giving you a full view of costs by vehicle. Fleets that use Bestpass also can manage their devices and reduce fraud by setting the hours the toll pass should be in use and flagging when it’s outside those times. Fleets can also see if the routes they took match up with the toll costs. Many fleets are using this data to look at route optimization or give feedback to drivers to help them become more efficient. The ROI companies can expect varies depending on fleet sizes and frequency of toll usage.FOR MORE INFORMATION Jason Walker is chief revenue officer of Bestpass, the leader in toll payment and management solutions for commercial fleets and owner operators. Emulating the operation of those cathedral doors, the Swivel Storage unit cannot be overlooked in its function and design.SWIVEL HISTORYThe Penner Family has operated Okno Manufacturing since 1981, and during that time they went through many tool boxes and work benches. The problem was that they just weren't built well enough to survive the heavy tools and dusty shop atmosphere. They were disappointed that someone wasn’t offering a solution for their needs. Out of necessity they designed and created their own workbenches that would stand up to their expectations. The most important feature to be included was a hinge or sliding mechanism that would not be affected by dirt and debris typical in many shops. After many years of trial and error the design that proved most successful is what started the Swivel Storage Solutions line. It was thought that others may be experiencing the same concern in looking for a long-lasting, well-built workbench that spawned the idea to patent the Swivel Products and then create the company itself: Swivel Storage Solutions. The design came from designer Norm Penner, a custom fabricator who needed a better solution to failing boxes. After several dozen design changes, the current version has been around for more than 15 years. The use of heavy steel in its construction contributes to the longevity of the product’s design.MORE THAN STORAGESwivel Storage Solutions also provides workshop space with mobile two-in-one workbench toolbox products, such as the Pro603512 or the Max603510 with casters. A permanent workbench (which comes in 30-inch increments) is available, using the patented drawer opening design that swings open. The top can be 7 gauge, quarter inch, half inch, or 1-inch thick in powder-coated steel or stainless. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM JULY 202330OPERATIONSRetreading has been around since the beginning of the 1900s, and during WWII, synthetic rubber was invented due to the import restrictions of natural rubber. Since the development of synthetic rubber was in its infancy, it did not perform as well as anticipated, and memories of this still plague the industry.Retreading has advanced by leaps and bounds since its beginning, not unlike other technologies. I like to use several analogies when comparing the old technology of retreading to today's advanced retread process and the advancements in tread development.Look at how far vehicles have come since the Model T. Look at fleets and understand that we don’t use the same trucks we did 80 years ago. Consider phones. Are phones the same as they were 50 years ago? I remember my first cell phone weighed 2 lbs and worked about half the time. When it did work, it cost 50 cents a minute. Now we all have smartphones that work 99% of the time with unlimited plans.MORE MILEAGE The advanced tread rubber of today runs as good if not better than the original tread, and the actual process that the modern-day retreader uses to inspect, prepare, apply, and vulcanize the tread rubber to the casing has advanced as well. Therefore, if you do not already incorporate retreading into your tire program, I suggest you start. In 2022, the US truck tire replacement market came in at 42 million, of which 16 million were retreads.A quality new tire with two retreads can deliver approximately 20% more miles than four new one-and-done low-quality, low-cost tires that have to be thrown away once the new tread is worn down. The charts on page 31 only reflect an average cost comparison between the two kinds of tires.BUSTED MYTHSWe have addressed that today's retreads are more advanced and superior to days gone by, so now let's address some of the retread myths you may or may not have heard of before. The below busted myths are from the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB).MYTH: Rubber on the road comes from retreaded tires. FACT : The rubber pieces you see on the road come from both new and retreaded tires in equal proportions to their usage on roads. Multiple Federal and State studies have proven that most of the rubber on the road comes from truck tires and is caused mainly by underinflation, overloading, and tire abuse.Reasons to Consider a Retreaded TireGET MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK WITH RETREADS By Ron Elliottheavy-duty showcase

Adjustment percentages of retreaded tires are about the same as new tires. Statistics compiled by the US Department of Transportation show that nearly all tires involved in tire-related accidents are underinflated or bald. Properly maintained tires, whether new or retreaded, do not cause accidents. MYTH: Retreaded tires can't be driven at highway speeds. FACT : Yes, retreaded tires can be driven at the same legal speeds as comparable new tires with no loss in safety or comfort.RETREADS AT WORKIf retreaded tires weren’t safe, they wouldn’t be trusted by numerous fleets. Retreaded tires are used daily and safely by ambulances, fire engines, USPS, school buses, aircraft, UPS, FedEx, and large and small fleets worldwide. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM JULY 202332OPERATIONSNearly 100% of the world's airlines will retread their tires multiple times, and 80% of all aviation tires are retreads.A GREEN SOLUTIONNow let's talk about retreads as they relate to the environment. It takes 22 gallons of oil to manufacture one new truck tire. Most of that oil is found in the casing, which is reused in the retread process. As a result, it takes only 7 gallons of oil to produce a quality retread. In fact, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency, retreading is responsible for saving North Americans more than 400 million gallons of oil every year. Therefore, the retreading process produces significantly less carbon emissions than creating a new tire. All in all, when using state-of-the-art technology, retreading uses only 30% of the energy it takes to produce a new tire. Additionally, retreading significantly reduces solid waste disposal problems. Over 300 million scrap tires are generated every year. When a tire is retreaded, it doesn't end up in the landfill, which helps decrease this number.Further, retreading is economically sound because approximately 70% of the cost of a new tire is in the tire casing. With proper maintenance, retreading permits the continued use of the fleet's investment. On average, a premium quality new tire tread lasts around 250,000 miles. Still, the casing has an average life of approximately 750,000 to one million miles, so retreading saves money and will nearly always increase mileage. A retreaded tire can cost 50% less than the cost of leading brand-new tires. This translates to millions of dollars in annual savings for consumers and trucking fleets. The quality of a well-crafted American-made retread tire is far superior to a new, one-and-done low quality, low-cost imported tire, and not to mention, retreading supports thousands of American jobs.TAKE NOTERETREAD FACTS Retreading uses only 30% of the energy it takes to manufacture a new tire.A retreaded tire costs 30 to 50% less than a new tire.Tread rubber manufacturers do not add wire or metal material to the tread. So, the next time you see a road gator on the side of the road, look and see if you can see some wires. If you do, the failure was more than likely caused by under or over-inflation, road hazard, etc.ABOUT THE AUTHORRon Elliott is the marketing manager for Pre-Q® GALGO and responsible for leading the marketing direction of the long-term growth strategy for the brand throughout the United States and Canada. Page 39

JULY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 35Is water wet? Are hot dogs tacos? Is Dad ever coming back with those cigarettes? These questions have plagued mankind since the beginning. More recently, fleet managers and CFOs around the world are asking a more important question: Should I be buying or leasing commercial vehicles?Fleet professionals shouldn’t view the question in terms of one versus the other. The answer is tied to the larger picture of proper capital forecasting and the long-term impact the decision will have on the company’s finances. Owning an asset means managing its acquisition, depreciation, operation, maintenance, repairs, and eventual disposal. Leasing a vehicle allows a company to only pay for the portion used, freeing up more capital to operate and grow a business. Most fleets finance vehicles through a combination of buying and leasing because leveraging debt is a huge part of the growth equation. Order too many vehicles and an underutilized fleet could cost a fortune without generating revenue. Don’t order enough and you could miss out on new business. All fleet planning comes with uncertainties. When unforeseen circumstances arise, or when dealerships and leasing companies aren’t able to provide vehicles, there is a third, more versatile option that complements current purchasing and leasing strategies. WHEN TO PURCHASEPurchasing makes the world a fleet’s oyster. Douse it in butter and slurp out the insides. Order a bottle and impress friends. Purchasing helps managers to not worry about going over allotted miles or paying hefty fines for wear and tear. The biggest benefit to purchasing is that there are no restrictions—it’s an owned vehicle to play with or neglect however is best fit.Benefits of purchasing: flexibility in vehicle disposal; reduced cost; tax benefits; equity reinvestment; boost in self-esteem.WHO SHOULD BUYPurchasing may seem like the most intuitive option, but it comes with the greatest financial burden. Companies should only buy vehicles when they are absolutely certain how many they’ll need. This includes small fleets—like plumbing startups or neighborhood landscapers—who just need a couple of vehicles and don’t want to worry about mileage or damage. If a fleet doesn’t need enough vehicles to bring down the price of a lease, it makes sense to buy. Medium and large fleets will typically purchase a percentage of their

Page 40

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM JULY 202336OPERATIONSvehicles to take advantage of various depreciation schedules.WHEN TO LEASEThe biggest advantage of leasing is the low initial investment. Instead of paying for the vehicle itself, only pay for the portion used. There’s no obligation to pay the full value, and the upfront payment is significantly lower. Enjoy all of the benefits of having new vehicles without incurring additional costs or liabilities, making it easier to invest in and grow a business. Leasing can reduce the total cost of ownership by 10 to 15%, but the vehicle won’t be owned at the end of the lease.Benefits of leasing: free up borrowing capacity; preserve capital; preview new safety features; replace vehicles easily; commitment issues? That’s okay!WHO SHOULD LEASEFleets with over 50 vehicles will find leasing to be the most convenient. Enterprises with hundreds of vehicles will lease the majority of their fleet so that they are not obligated to pay the entire price upfront. Fleets that lease through an FMC will receive a litany of services, including more purchasing power and cost savings.WHEN TO RENTAsk an old boy about rental vehicles, and they might spit in disdain. “I ain’t paying more for an empty van from Enterprise,” they might say. And they’d be right. Rental has long been a dirty word for fleet managers who don’t want their employees driving outdated, unmarked vans at a high weekly cost. But the attitude toward vehicle rentals and their functionality within commercial fleets has come a long way. The most effective fleets are able to adapt when uncertainties arise. What if you need vans quickly but only for six months, like during peak season or for a certain project? Or if it’s necessary to supplement the fleet while waiting for OEM allocation? Maybe it’s necessary to test a new technology to see how it performs before making a major investment. The main advantage of renting is the convenience it offers. Rental vehicles are readily available, meaning no more extensive paperwork and negotiations associated with purchasing or leasing. For example, consider a landscaping business that needs extra vehicles during the spring and summer months to transport employees and equipment. Renting vans might cost more than a lease for the same time period, but that landscaping business can return them when the season is over rather than being shackled to them in the off-season. Or consider a solar company that’s planning to expand into a new market. The local electric company has signed off on net metering, and the state has passed tax credits for renewable energy. Now it’s a race to get to market between this particular solar company and all the big players. Often, a business can’t afford to wait nine months to get vans from a dealer. On top of that, this gold rush has the potential to turn up only dirt. If things don’t go as planned, one might get stuck with a bunch of vehicles collecting dust and draining funds.Rental companies—such as Kingbee—have hundreds of vans available now, meaning there’s no wait. Less time waiting around means more days satisfying customers, meaning more profit.Benefits of renting: avoid maintenance costs; crush the peak season; survive high-turnover; save on ownership costs; return vehicles when finished.WHO SHOULD RENTSmall fleets, large fleets, short fleets, tall fleets—fleets of every size should consider renting. Even fleets that experience high turnover or need vehicles quickly or fleets that can’t afford to wait another six months for OEM allocation should rent. Renting is for when a big contract is won or when a business only uses vehicles seasonally—it allows the freedom from committing to a vehicle that ends up becoming a spare when the project ends.Renting is for when it all hits the fan and waiting is not an option. Renting is for when time equates to money. The lease, buy, rent question is not an either/or choice. For most fleets, the answer is all three, and it all boils

Page 41

down to which combination is the most cost-effective. A combination of long- and short-term assets will help a business adapt to unforeseen circumstances. COMPLEMENT THE STRATEGYWhen vehicles aren’t available through traditional avenues or when cashflow is tight, Kingbee provides vans right away. Since its inception, Kingbee has helped the nation’s leading solar companies scale their fleets at an unprecedented pace. It has also helped small businesses that needed new vans because their orders with dealerships were canceled. In three to four weeks, a fleet could have new vans wrapped with the company’s branding and upfitted with shelves and racks—all without adding to the balance sheet. Kingbee complements a business’ current funding strategy and offers a third avenue for funding vehicles, alongside leasing and purchasing, so business owners don’t miss out on revenue while planning for a more long-term solution.JULY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 37ABOUT THE AUTHORTanner Lee has written about vans and trucks for the last eight years. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM JULY 202338OPERATIONSAs we progress further into the 21st century, the need for efficient and versatile cargo handling solutions in work van applications becomes increasingly essential. It’s not necessarily about making work easier; it’s about making it smarter and sometimes simpler in the process. Hydraulic liftgates and compact electric cranes are indeed beneficial for offloading some equipment and cargo types from vans, but these technologies have their own sets of challenges, such as upfront cost, maintenance, service downtime, and training requirements.According to Vinny Lamontagna, US Upfitters’ sales manager, “In this case, the most straightforward solution is also the least expensive and most versatile—it’s an aluminum ramp—and it will get the job done.”Small liftgates and cranes don’t just drain vehicle batteries; they also require significantly more maintenance and cost, between two to four times more, to purchase and install than a ramp,” comments Kevin Parker, founder of Advantage Outfitters. “Depending on the specific application and the type of freight or equipment involved, ramps, particularly spring-assist aluminum ramps, are a highly practical and versatile solution catering to a wide range of needs.”A SWIVEL STANDARDOver the decades, advancements in design, engineering, and materials have meant advancements in ramp design, and using all three, Link Manufacturing has set the standard.Link ramps mount just within a vehicle’s doors, occupying less than 12 inches of horizontal space. With this feature, opening and closing a ramp requires a minimal amount of effort.Link ramps are designed to meet a variety of uses, with dimensions ranging from 24 to 47 inches in width, comfortably accommodating standard hand trucks and other cargo conveyance equipment. Bifold ramp lengths vary from 72 to 135 inches, while extended ramp models can reach 119 inches, featuring an adjustable support mechanism for added stability. In 2021, Link introduced a 42-inch by 108-inch ramp to its line of nine standard ramp designs, catering to an array of applications. This new addition provides more ramp width without obstructing door access when mounted to one side and folded into its upright, storage position.“Link ramps often outlast more than one vehicle; we just remove them and put them in a new van,” Lamontagna says. “They make our customers happy—and that’s why we always keep them in stock.”LIGHTENING THE LOADLink recently modified its product line, focusing on weight reduction and improved mounting solutions for its aluminum swivel ramps as well as improved bumper clearance for its entire ramp line. This evolution allows for even greater flexibility and adaptability for those in the fast-paced world of work van upfitting.“We were excited to hear that Link had made its remarkably good product line even better,” Lamontagna adds. “Their new swivel and folding ramp designs will help make our installation process easier and our customers happier.”The company’s light-weighting effort led to approximately 30 lbs shed from the ramp’s original mounting plate design. Link’s installation instructions are now much more straightforward. This, combined with the addition of extra mounting holes, makes it easier and faster for upfitters to install Link’s swivel ramps. So, what does a 30-lb weight reduction mean in real-world applications? Link’s swivel ramps now weigh between 157 and 225 lbs, translating to a weight savings of 13.3 to 19.1%, depending on the ramp model. This lighter-weight mounting plate is also easier for upfitters to install and provides benefits to end users, such as improved fuel efficiency and less stress on the vehicle structure.ELEVATING EFFICIENCYLink Manufacturing is also working on a design modification that improves the functionality of not only its swivel-ramp design, but its folding ramps as well. A new extended spring design configuration allows both types of Link ramps to better clear their host vehicle’s bumpers.“So on all ramps of 108 inches and longer, we moved our spring-assist components farther down the ramp,” VanderKooi says. “That way we can get additional clearance above the vehicle’s bumper, giving upfitters a little more flexibility in the mounting location. Now they can mount the folding ramp farther into the vehicle if they need to, and it gives them a lot more clearance to the bumper.”The innovative clearance feature targets the step van market because that’s where users most often see interference with ramp-to-bumper contact. On Link’s swivel ramps the new design provides about 3 to 4 inches of increased clearance above the bumper. On Link’s LB20 model folding ramp, the new design accounts for 8 or 9 inches of increased clearance.“The versatility and practicality of ramps, particularly spring-assist aluminum ramps, meet a wide variety of our needs,” says Advantage Outfitters’ Parker. “And with Link’s constant innovations, they continue to be an extremely practical and versatile solution.”FOR MORE INFORMATIONFind out more about Link ramp products, visit www.linkramps.com. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM JULY 202344Using technology within fleet operations helps improve efficiency, customer satisfaction, driver safety, and more. Yet with all the technology offerings and the immense data collection and analysis, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. That’s where Samsara comes in. The company analyzes data in its Connected Operations Cloud platform to help fleets make sense of all the data collected from their drivers, their fleet vehicles, each trip made, and more. To better improve its platform, Samsara announced innovations designed to help the worker experience. These digital tools include Virtual Coach, Mobile Experience Management, Smart Trailer and Asset Tracking solutions, and Data Connectors.INNOVATION BREAKDOWNMobile Experience Management (MEM)Samsara’s MEM offers workers in the field a lifeline, instead of a distraction, through mobile devices. MEM simplifies mobile management so that workers remain connected, productive, and safe. MEM offers field employees customized support, such as remote training and troubleshooting, through their mobile device, while minimizing unnecessary digital distractions.Virtual CoachVirtual Coach improves road safety by empowering drivers to self-coach directly from the Samsara Driver App. Managers can also personalize coaching experiences at scale, which helps improve both road safety and driver retention and engagement.Smart Trailer and Asset TrackingUsing next-generation Asset Gateways, Samsara connects and extends trailer and asset data, such as usage, location, and temperature, to produce better operational outcomes. Samsara offers a “Find My Asset” feature that helps managers quickly find lost or stolen assets, even while unpowered. Further, a new integration with Thermo King’s TracKing Telematics allows customers to monitor and remotely control their Thermo King reefers from the Samsara dashboard.Data ConnectorsBecause Samsara focuses on connectivity, it stresses integrations among multiple OEM and telematics platforms. Adding to its integrations this year are FiveTran, Kafka, and Power BI. With the integration, Samsara easily streams data to power business applications and workflows. This visibility empowers organizations to make data-driven decisions and improve the bottom line.CONNECT OPERATIONS“We know that data is essential in today’s environment to drive better business outcomes—whether that’s lowering emissions, preventing accidents, or automating workflows,” explains Jeff Hausman, Samsara chief product officer. “Empowering the people within your organization with the right digital tools is critical to achieving these outcomes.”Among the digital tools announced at the conference, Mobile Experience Management and Virtual Coach are available for US customers today.INNOVATIONS ANNOUNCED AT SAMSARA BEYOND CONFERENCESamsara, pioneer of the Connected Operations Cloud, which harnesses data to develop business insights, held its second annual Samsara Beyond conference in Austin, Texas, last month. The conference gathered together leaders and innovators across industries that keep the global economy on the move.
