The reinforced panel is a completely extruded 1/8-inch thick aluminum panel with an exterior PVC fascia. The addition of the intermediate aluminum extrusion will provide additional reinforcement and further increase the rigidity of the door. The Streamline 2-inch Insulated roll-up door is a PVC roll-up door with patented no external hinge panels with aluminum reinforcements. The strategically placed reinforcements provide support for the built-in hinges while protecting against door sag and increasing rigidity. Rubber-sealed panel ends help prevent water absorption that increases door weight and decreases thermal efficiency over time. The doors are lightweight, do not rust, rot, or delaminate and do not require painting. For more, visit www.mclarendoors.com. The top units were those that appeared in consumer searches the most, based on users’ search criteria. Each search is distinct, based on that shopper’s needs. Generally, consumers look for mileage, condition, technology, and fuel efficiency, among other factors. So, it's not a shock to see them dominate the list. As leaders in the manufacturer space, they also have vehicles that include some of the top features consumers are looking for such as fuel efficiency and safety features.MWS: WHAT FACTORS HAVE THE MOST POPULAR BRANDS FBOWLES: Brand awareness is a significant factor in driving buyer affinity. For instance, Ford has been a commercial vehicle leader for nearly 50 years, serving Classes 1-7. Like Ford, Freightliner has been a market leader for many years, as well as Chevrolet and International. The Ram brand, which is relatively new, has made dramatic gains in share over the past five years as it has developed a strong commercial sales and service organization. Awareness works hand in hand in building brand trust, which directly correlates to popularity. Its vertical integration and strong commercial sales and service programs are tailored to commercial vehicle buyers. Additionally, as we mentioned in our article, Ford trucks are built with efficiency in mind. In fact, Ford’s pickup trucks are among some of the most reliable options for drivers and have a broad variety of upfit, truck, and trailer types to withstand most commercial jobs.MWS: ARE YOU SURPRISED BY THE PLACEMENT OF ANY OF THESE TO SEE ANYTHING DIFFERENT FBOWLES: There weren’t really any surprises, per se, but trucks are so well-built nowadays that it’s hard to make a bad choice. Depending on what a user is searching for, there are other popular brands that will show up in more specialized vocational categories, such as Isuzu and Mack. Both of which are highly sought after for job-specific applications. One interesting variable that could dramatically add share to a brand will be its electric vehicle offerings. Commercial EVs, particularly those associated with specific vocations, such as buses and delivery trucks, are gaining substantial traction at the fleet and municipality levels. Ford’s E-Transit Van and International’s eMV Series have the potential to gobble up some additional shares.FOR MORE INFORMATION Charles Bowles is the director Commercial Truck Trader’s Top www.commercialtrucktrader.com.

Page 20

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202316MEDIUM-DUTY WORKTRUCK SHOWCASELast year, Modern WorkTruck Solutions introduced its readers to the Bollinger Motors B1, B2, and Chass-E. At the time, Bollinger Motors, a brand that’s relatively new to the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing space, designed and tested prototypes of an electric SUV, an electric pickup truck, and an EV platform that could be used in a variety of work truck applications. But only a few months after the article ran, Bollinger Motors did an overhaul of its Chass-E design, developing an EV work truck that fits virtually any Class 4-6 vehicle need. Built for work truck applications, the design is powerful, durable, efficient, and versatile.CAB FORWARDA major change from its B1 and B2 designs, the B4 Chassis Cab design was thoughtfully executed, and it’s available in Classes 4, 5, and 6.“The cab-forward design is a radical change from our previous concepts,” says Bollinger Motors founder and CEO Robert Bollinger. “And that’s on purpose. We listened to our commercial customers and developed what they need for ultimate efficiency.”Those that currently employ cab-forward trucks know the benefits they bring. Cab-forward trucks allow for more cargo space, improved visibility, and they’re easier to maneuver around city streets and tight suburban spaces. The Bollinger Motors B4 Chassis Cab forward is no exception. Bollinger Motors touts that its cab forward is capable of carrying two extra feet of cargo space compared to conventional work trucks. Cab-forward trucks also don’t have a hood obscuring the driver’s vision, and the result is improved down-vision angles for increased visibility for the road ahead. And the cab-forward design also provides a turning circle that’s only 44 ft (with a 158-inch wheelbase)—making it a great option for operating in congested areas.EV POWERAt the time of last year’s article, Bollinger Motors developed its own batteries. But in the fall of 2022, Bollinger Motors announced a new battery supplier, Our Next Energy (ONE). ONE builds its Aries LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry batteries without the use of nickel or cobalt. The result is a battery that offers superior durability with a daily charging up to 100%. And further, these batteries are built in the USA.The 800-volt Aries LFP battery offers a range of roughly 100 miles per battery pack for a range between 140 and 185 miles—and yes, owners can choose the amount of battery packs (either one or two) that work best for their application. The battery charges from 20 to 80% in 4.4 hours using a Level 2 charger or in 1.2 hours when using a Level 3 charger. Additionally, the B4 Chassis Cab powertrain offers 368 hp with 675 lb-ft of torque.Aside from shear power, the B4 Chassis Cab is built to be durable and efficient. It features a straight beam front axle and a solid rear axle e-drive for higher payload demand. The chassis cab also features a dual wheel drive rear axle. All its rails are flat and straight. The EV's stackable battery packs fit snuggly between the frame rails for protection and less complexity. The Class 4-6 B4 Chassis Cabs feature GVWR from 15,000 to 22,000 lbs. The vehicles can accommodate payloads between 7,080 and 13,300 lbs. Choose between multiple wheelbases with all three classes, from 158 inches to 208 inches, whichever better fits the necessary body type for the

Page 21

FEBRUARY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 17application. And speaking of the best fit, the B4 Chassis Cab is designed to accommodate different body types, such as a box truck, bucket truck, or more.SAFETYNo matter which Bollinger Motors vehicle a fleet owner chooses, rest assured, fleet drivers will be safe. That’s because for Bollinger Motors, safety is paramount. A backup camera and a backup alarm come standard with the B4 Chassis Cab. Additionally, all components rest inside the steel frame rails. This is a safety benefit, but it also allows for easier upfitting.EV SAVINGSThe Bollinger Motors Chass-E redesign resulted in a vehicle designed from the ground up with an emphasis on efficiency and safety. The brand designed the trucks to make the switch to electric seamless for existing fleets. Not only was the truck designed to benefit fleet owners, its manufacture and assembly will benefit fleet owners, as well. This is because Bollinger Motors designs, engineers, and assembles its vehicles in the USA, locally sourcing as many materials and components as possible. This keeps the Bollinger Motors overall cost of operation lower—a savings that Bollinger Motors passes along to its customers. In addition to operational savings, the total cost of ownership for an electric fleet truck is projected to be thousands of dollars lower than the total cost of ownership for vehicles with an internal combustion engine. Bollinger Motors estimates its B4 Chassis Cab's total cost over 10 years to be around $190,000 compared to a similar diesel chassis cab, which Bollinger Motors estimates a 10 year total cost around $280,000—and this excludes savings and rebate from government incentives. With Bollinger Motors’ goal of making the switch to EVs seamless and with the lower total cost of ownership, all that’s left to do is decide what configuration is best for your fleet.FOR MORE INFORMATION Find out more about the Bollinger Motors B4 Chassis Cab, visit www.bollingermotors.com.

FEBRUARY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 21Aaron Smith was always interested in business—enough to graduate college with a degree in business management. But growing up in inner-city Chicago among drug culture, Smith ultimately found himself involved in the illegitimate business of drug-dealing. Smith was arrested in 2006 for a non-violent drug offense, and in 2009, he plead guilty to the charges, receiving a 12-year federal sentence. Smith spent nine years and five months in custody and prepared for his release while doing time. Smith worked dispatch at a large trucking company during his years on bond, so he knew he wanted to work in logistics when he was released. Smith says he knew he could get back into the trucking and logistics industry and find a way to give formerly incarcerated individuals a job opportunity.Upon his release in February 2019, he used his prior work experience, collegiate experience, and his personal skills to land a job—the exact job he wanted—in the logistics industry. He worked the full-time job for roughly three years, learning dispatch from a broker’s standpoint, which provided the experience necessary for Smith to achieve his goals of helping others find work.Smith says trucking is probably the number one or number two job formerly incarcerated men want to do after they are released. This is because the barrier of entry is low and the pay is similar to that of what they might have made performing illicit activities. Smith knew people who wanted to get a job in the industry, but they simply didn’t know where to start.THE COURSEWanting to help those with similar life experiences as himself, Smith started his own trucking company. He began hiring formerly incarcerated drivers and offered them the mentorship and knowledge necessary for them to potentially be the owner/operators of their own trucking business.

Page 26

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202322OPERATIONSHe extended the mentorship and knowledge sharing when he co-developed a non-CDL truck driving course hosted on the Stretch Finance web platform. He developed the course with the help a friend, Ed Hennings, who is also a former inmate, and owns five box trucks of his own. Smith knew Hennings would be the perfect teacher. The course teaches everything a potential truck owner/operator would need to know to get their foot in the door, from A to Z, Smith says. The nine-chapter course includes weekly Zoom calls, mentorship opportunities, and even lessons from other professionals in the industry that help educate students on different aspects of the industry. Smith says that recently a representative from a trucking-specific finance software company spoke to the class, sharing their insight on how to keep finances in order and ways to mitigate accounting issues.Smith says the course basically walks participants through the whole process of learning to drive a truck and acquiring a truck; it provides links to financing options, dispatcher and broker references, and accounting services. There’s also a business planning tool available to course participants with a financial planner that helps students calculate loads and costs per mile.“On top of the information our course provides, we want to give them real-world examples of what it’s like being a professional in the industry,” Smith adds. PROVEN SUCCESSSmith says not only has the course benefited formerly incarcerated individuals, it’s also benefited those that have otherwise been impacted by the justice system.“We teach them how to start their own trucking company without having a commercial driver’s license,” Smith says. “And we have some success stories thus far.”Smith mentions one particular individual, Kwante Williams, who spent almost 15 years in prison. Upon his release, he began Smith’s non-CDL trucking course. Smith says the course taught Williams how to book a load, what a dispatcher was, what a broker was—essentially every component necessary to run a successful owner/operator trucking business. When he completed the course, Smith and his team connected Williams with a financing company, a community development fund, out in California that enabled him to acquire a piece of equipment and begin driving for himself right away. Within just three months from beginning the course, Williams was a truck company owner/operator.“That’s our goal: to take you from not knowing anything about the industry to getting inside a truck and becoming an owner/operator,” Smith says.Smith began teaching the course in April of 2022, and within that time, he estimates that roughly 50 to 70 students have taken classes. Students complete the course in their own time, and Smith says he tries to keep in touch with the ones that have fallen away, knowing that life happens and other commitments can sometimes take priority in their lives. But although some have fallen away, he says many of them come back.FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEThe non-CDL owner/operator course is available on www.stretch.money. The course can be purchased for $349. Scholarships are available for individuals interested in taking the course but find themselves in need of financial assistance. Smith says he’s partnered with one organization that was able to supply a number of scholarships to students, and they also have a weekly scholarship giveaway. Smith says they are also looking to partner with other companies in the transportation industry to help provide scholarships and change someone’s life through trucking.UNTAPPED TALENTWith the current—and growing—driver shortage, no talent pool should be overlooked. Smith encourages fleet owners in need of drivers to connect with him or others like him that are willing to help these individuals reach their goals of becoming truck drivers.“We’re hardworking,” Smith begins. “Most of us just made some bad decisions. But we’re willing to turn that around with an opportunity.”Smith says that any company that offers second-chance job opportunities to formerly incarcerated drivers could change the whole dynamics of a family and of a community.FOR MORE INFORMATION chance job opportunity for formerly incarcerated drivers can email Aaron Smith at aaron.esmith81@gmail.com. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202324MAINTENANCEAll truck manufacturers are fighting to meet emissions targets, whether those targets are set by the manufacturer themselves or, especially, targets set by the government. Because internal combustion engines have been around for well over a century, proving to be a reliable powertrain, manufacturers are straddling the line between holding on to tried and true methods and reinventing the wheel. Thankfully, meeting emissions targets hasn’t required an overhaul of engine design—yet. And some manufacturers are becoming really great at small tweaks and modifications that decrease the amount of emissions a diesel engine pumps into the environment. One such tweak lies in the check valve, specifically, a Parker Hannifin check valve. This simple solution was discovered by a Class 7-8 work truck manufacturer whose engineers tinkered with different ways to improve emissions. This particular manufacturer then informed Parker Hannifin of the way the brand’s check valves helped decrease this manufacturer’s truck emissions.Parker Hannifin is now working to get the word out about this cost-effective solution to engine emissions. How a Check Valve can Reduce EmissionsTHE COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTION THAT ONE MANUFACTURER HAS ALREADY PROVEN

Page 29

FEBRUARY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS FUEL REGULATORHow can something as simple as a check valve reduce vehicle emissions? Parker Hannifin’s Cameron Koller, a market development manager focusing on a range of products in the hydraulic space, says, “The check valve is one small piece of the whole puzzle of emission regulation, but the check valve better allows manufactures to regulate the amount of pressure and fuel that comes through the system.”For fleet owner/operators that aren’t exactly mechanically savvy, Parker Hannifin’s Jake Wehrly, a product sales manager, explains that a check valve is a metal adapter threaded in-line with the fuel system. This product allows fuel flow in only one direction, and a spring in the valve determines how much pressure is built up before it allows fuel to flow through. Wehrly says these check valves aren’t set to allow a specific amount of fuel to flow through, but engine manufacturers can set the flow to any pressure they find is efficient for their engines based on “the check valve’s crack pressure, its size, and the actual area the fuel can flow through.”In fact, it was up to the truck engineers to come up with the perfect specifications to reduce emissions with the check valve. Those engineers went back and forth with Parker Hannifin’s engineers to ensure the check valve met all the specifications that the manufacturer calculated. PARKER QUALITYKoller admits that although Parker is a proactive company, being an early stage business-to-business-oriented company means that sometimes they learn about the benefits of an application—in this case, Parker check valves—after the fact. Then, the Parker strategy is to broaden the awareness of that product and its added value.“We don’t want to tell the world this check valve will help you instantly achieve emissions regulations, but our goal is to help,” Koller says. “And this is a unique way to leverage our product and help contribute to that solution.”Parker isn’t the only company to manufacture check valves, but the company does tout its check valves’ tighter tolerance control compared to competitor valves. Wehrly explains it this way:“If a crack pressure, for example, is 65 PSI … there’s a tolerance on that number. So in reality, it’s 65 plus or minus. And in a situation like this where

Page 30

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202326MAINTENANCEit’s very precise, you need to be able to control those tolerances and calculate.”Koller adds that Parker Hannifin check valves offer more accuracy and control in fuel flow, which makes them more precise. He says it’s those differentiators that set Parker check valves apart from a check valve one could grab off the shelf.“Where we distinguish ourselves in making the valve itself is the engineering support and the quality control in the manufacturing process when making it,” Wehrly says. “That sets it apart from a standard check valve.”AN ADDED VALUEAs Koller mentioned before, this Parker check valve modification is just one piece to a larger puzzle in the process of meeting emissions targets. And Wehrly admits there are countless ways to reduce emissions, but he doesn’t see why this check valve solution couldn’t continue being a cost-effective solution for the foreseeable future.“It’s not the one thing that will get you under your emissions requirements,” Wehrly states. “But there’s no reason it couldn’t continue to be a piece of that puzzle.”Although a simple solution in theory, it’s unlikely that a fleet maintenance technician can perform this emissions-reducing modification. This check valve modification must be done at the manufacturer level, requiring specific calculations to determine the impact check valve modifications will have on a system. Wehrly says calculations with the check valve structure must also be made to ensure the valve can adequately accommodate a specific fuel flow.“It’s not really plug and play,” Wehrly says. “A lot of behind-the-scenes math has to be done to determine the impact the valves can have on the flow.”Despite the fact the modification must be done at the OEM level, fleet owners might find value in speaking with their dealers and vehicle suppliers about this emissions-reducing solution. After all, making modifications to a check valve is a much more cost-effective solution compared to other types of pressure regulators—and that savings could be passed on the fleet owner. So much great information, so readily available.READ ON...www.mwsmag.comHot new products, reviews of trade shows and new releases, arcles from the top brands and the leaders of work truck innovaon are present in every arcle and every issue of Modern Worktruck Soluons magazine. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202328TECHNOLOGYThere are good reasons for many fleets to switch to electric power. But converting a fleet of work trucks to run on electricity is no flip of a switch. To start with, producing a work truck is far from simple. These vehicles are often constructed in multiple stages and by multiple manufacturers. Converting from powering them with internal combustion engines to electric drive systems piles on the complexity.Yet, whether due to the pursuit of improved cost, productivity, regulatory or sustainability outcomes, or some combination thereof, the work truck industry’s interest in electric vehicle (EV) fleets is gaining traction fast. Most of these vehicles will be battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), meaning they are powered solely by batteries installed within the vehicle’s frames that provide all the “juice” needed to drive the powertrain. Some EVs may be hybrids, equipped with both electric drives and (typically) gasoline engines for light-duty How to Smooth the Road to Electric Work TrucksPLAN AHEAD FOR A BRIGHT EV FUTURE By Christopher Lyon

Page 33

FEBRUARY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 29work, such as pickups. While EVs may not be suitable for every work truck application, those that work from central depots, such as refuse collection and utility service vehicles, are excellent candidates for going electric. What’s more, this green technology continues to advance as additional options for electric trucks become available and the batteries that make their wheels turn become more efficient. WHY SWITCH?Electric power appeals to many fleet operators for several compelling reasons. These include the potential for EVs to deliver a lower total cost of vehicle ownership, thanks to reduced fuel spend and lower maintenance costs; to eliminate tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases as required by federal and state regulations; to help achieve corporate environmental sustainability goals; and, in many cases, to enable quiet operation on urban streets and during overnight operations. The specific reasons why a particular fleet would consider shifting to lower emissions vehicles—indeed, the bar now is as low as zero emissions—should be clearly defined and weighed prior to starting any EV conversion. Among the key considerations are:• Lowering operating and life cycle costs• Supporting energy independence• Reducing energy costs• Improving the fleet’s public imageAs bright as the electric future appears, shifting a single truck or an entire fleet to electric power takes a lot of planning. That starts with attaining leadership buy-in. From there, consider the electric ecosystem that will surround and support these work trucks. That’s why the next step is for the fleet to form cooperative partnerships with vehicle builders and their EV component suppliers, battery manufacturers, electric utilities, and providers of on-site charging infrastructure.BACK TO BASICSWhen communicating with these partners, be sure to define the fleet’s

Page 34

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2023TECHNOLOGYdrive cycle and duty cycle for each type of truck to be converted. These are the two pillars to define a work truck’s mission and help scope out how to accomplish that mission. Avoid the common pitfall of confusing the two. The drive cycle defines how a vehicle is used, while the duty cycle defines how much a vehicle is used. These measurements are mutually inclusive, and both define how vehicles are used. They are equally important, especially when designing EVs and the infrastructure to support them. However, they are vastly different. In simple terms, the drive cycle measures physical points, such as vehicle speed, starts and stops, idle time, and power take-off (PTO) power export. On the other hand, the duty cycle measures the length of average operating time, operating cycles per period, total distance driven, and percentage of loaded versus empty operation. Both measurements are crucial when considering all aspects of electrifying the fleet.SUPPLIER ENGAGEMENTMost vocational trucks are built in multiple stages by multiple manufacturers. While some fleets work with a single source, such as a fleet management company, that may provide a turnkey solution, others will interact with several partners, perhaps the chassis supplier, an auxiliary equipment supplier, and an upfitter. While industry standardization evolves, technology also advances. Taking time on the front end to evaluate all options, from the capabilities of the electric drive system under consideration to how the truck batteries will be charged, can ensure that the final spec’d unit serves its intended purpose. Following a methodical procedure and engaging the right people at the right time is critical. With almost every vehicle change, there are hidden and unanticipated costs and other challenges that creep up and can derail or significantly delay a vehicle spec’ing campaign. Don’t overlook costs and prices beyond the power unit when planning. These could involve facility upgrades, technician training, or operational requirements based on vehicle limits (range, towing, etc.). You may find that vehicle design is the easy part. Designing and installing charging and maintenance infrastructure can get complicated.CHARGING AHEADMany fleets, especially in the work truck sector, cannot rely on public infrastructure, either for fueling or charging. Therefore, it’s critical to talk to the utility company about the supply of power available and how or if it can support the vehicles. Next, develop a long-term plan for infrastructure. Planning for

Page 35

FEBRUARY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS infrastructure will be much more cost-effective. Charging infrastructure can be a very expensive afterthought. It’s essential to plan not just for current needs, but for tomorrow’s needs, as well. This involves consultations, designing, permitting, constructing, managing, and finally, activating. Having the right partners lined up and communicating with them effectively is of utmost importance. Diving deeper into charging with a utility and charging suppliers will reveal that most fleets will need two types of charging solutions. Depending on duty cycles, plan to install enough slow-charging stations so vehicles returned to their depot can charge steadily over a period of hours to be ready for their next shift, typically each morning. To supplement this, a fleet may install a smaller number of quick-charging stations that can rapidly “top off” the charge of a vehicle on duty to extend its range as needed. Light-duty fleets may also have drivers charge their vehicles overnight at their homes. This means they’ll need a plan for installing chargers at their employees’ homes and a reliable driver reimbursement system. Ultimately, it’s the fleet’s responsibility to ensure that charging stations are installed to meet building and fire codes and are operated safely by trained personnel. In addition, work with charging suppliers so that charging data will be collected and processed properly to better inform management on the performance of EVs and their chargers. MEASURING SUCCESSWhile EVs are a proven green solution, this shouldn’t obscure the fact there is no single technology that is the only answer to cutting greenhouse gases and fuel costs. For a given fleet, the best option might include other advanced fuels and technologies, such as natural gas and propane engines or, further off, fuel cell power. And that’s not to mention advances that may occur in conventional diesel- or gasoline-fueled powertrains. In the end, vehicles need to perform specific tasks to meet organizational goals. By defining those, each fleet can establish its own measurement of success. While these goals can differ by fleet, whether they’re financial, environmental, or regulatory, success means getting the commercial vehicle’s job done effectively and efficiently.ABOUT THE AUTHOR Christopher Lyon started his career with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage largest work truck event. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2023TECHNOLOGYNovember is a great time to visit Miami Beach, and it’s not a bad place to hold a conference, either. That’s just what Holman did this past fall. Holman, an integrated automotive services company, provides services and insight into fleet management, upfitting, vehicle equipment, vehicle sourcing, and so much more.Holman described its event, Holman Drive, as “an opportunity to connect with leaders from across a variety of industries and participate in spirited, thought-provoking discussions.”The event sessions consisted of discussion topics ranging from key trends impacting the automotive industry. Those trends included topics such as supply chain disruptions, the transition to EVs, pressures of inflation, and emerging technologies, among others. Read below for conference highlights: electric vehicle (EV) supply chain, post-pandemic outlook, and predicted takeaways for 2023.EV SUPPLY CHAINIn the Holman Drive session, New Realities, Holman President and Chief Operating Officer Chris Conroy discussed where the industry stands now and where it could be headed, taking a look at electric vehicles, specifically. It’s no surprise the automotive and truck fleet industry is heavily focused on EVs. With societal and governmental pressure on fleets to lower their emissions and EVs making their way onto dealership lots, a fully electrified fleet is looking like less of a dream and more of a reality for some. Further, existing EV tax credits incentivize consumers to purchase EVs, and new EV tax credits work to incentivize OEMs to shift their EV supply chains to North America. Here’s why…Globally, China is leading the way in terms of battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales. The country is home to 64% of State of the IndustryACCORDING TO HOLMAN Holman President and COO Chris Conroy discussing the state of the fleet industry Holman Drive, an educational and networking conference, took place in Miami Beach last November.

Page 37

FEBRUARY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS global BEV sales. The country is also home to the mining and manufacture of many critical components required to power EVs. The BEV supply chain can be broken down into five segments: 1) mining, 2) processing, 3) battery components, 4) batteries, and 5) vehicles. The United States heavily relies on China for those five components. The US places a reliance on China of 80% for mining cobalt, where the US mines less than 1% of its own cobalt; it places a 60% reliance for lithium processing, where the US processes less than 1% of its own lithium. When it comes to battery components, the US relies on China for 80% of its anodes and 60% of its cathodes production, where the US produces less than 1% of either for its use. The United States places a 79% share of Li-ion battery manufacturing on China compared to its own 7%, and finally, only 10% of EVs are sold in the US compared to China’s 64%.AFTER THE PANDEMICIt’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic affected the supply chain, and with inflation on the rise, when will we begin to see some relief? Will operations ever resume to pre-pandemic levels? Holman’s State of the Industry report states that multiple factors contributed to the inflation seen today. In the lockdowns of 2020, the GDP shrank by 30%, and unemployment rose to 14%. To keep the economy afloat, the federal government pumped money into the economy via stimulus. With extra liquidity in the system, Americans’ buying power increased causing demand for goods to skyrocket. Supply chains weren’t ready to handle this uptick in demand: think, the cargo ships that couldn’t dock at US ports and goods that were sitting in crates at shipyards for weeks. The lockdowns that spawned remote work had many employees An electrified fleet is looking like more of a reality for some.”“

Page 38

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2023TECHNOLOGYrethinking their work situation. Employees left businesses in droves to find more flexible work, which led companies to counter with higher wages. Wage growth has continued (although it’s currently moderating). Now, today’s low unemployment numbers, businesses becoming healthy again, liquidity in the market, and a continuing demand for goods has led to a perfect recipe for increased prices. Some segments of inflation include energy, food, and shelter (people’s homes, apartments, housing, etc.). It’s predicted that once wages level out, consumers will slow their spending, which will result in decreased demand, allowing the market to correct itself.INFLATION & FLEETSJust like the multiple factors that have played into inflation as a whole, multiple factors have also played into inflation of the automotive industry. One factor was the factory shutdowns during the pandemic, decreasing production and inventories. Another factor was a migration from the cities to the suburbs, increasing consumer demand for vehicles. Then, as demand grew, dealership inventories quickly depleted. Regardless, overall fleet sales are up. Bringing the conversation full circle, the hottest segment of the vehicle marketplace rests on EVs. At the time of the report, global sales of EVs were projected to have a global growth of 57% year over year for 2022, exceeding 6% of global auto sales. Momentum is steady in the EV and BEV market, and with government incentives and tax credits combined with the research and development of both startups and legacy OEMs (General Motors and Ford), the needs of an EV consumer and fleet owner are being met on a regular basis.TAKEAWAYS FOR 2023Although we can share only a snapshot of recent events and provide mere predictions of the future, it’s best to keep a business plan for the future—no matter what it throws at your fleet business. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2023TECHNOLOGYThe logistics and shipping industry continues to grow, despite the historical supply chain issues brought on by the global pandemic. Demand is increasing for faster shipping speeds and more technologically advanced logistics processes. One of the most vital parts of the supply chain is last-mile delivery, the process of moving goods from the warehouse to the customer’s front door. The speed of last-mile delivery is of the utmost importance to customers, but it can also be the most costly part of the delivery process. Any inefficiencies in last-mile delivery can lead to added costs, severely affecting the bottom line for the shipping company and causing disappointments for the customers. Making the last-mile delivery process cost-effective and technologically evolved is imperative for businesses that wish to scale and continue to best serve their customers. PROBLEMS IN THE PROCESSThere are several issues that can arise within the space between the warehouse and the customer. It’s the role of innovative delivery partners to develop ways of improving the last-mile process for both shipping companies and customers. Issues outside of exorbitant cost include failed deliveries, antiquated delivery processes, unpredictable transit, lack of proper delivery infrastructure, inefficient tracking, and outdated shipping logistics technology. It may feel like there are a litany of issues that could throw a wrench in efficient delivery, causing some concern for growing e-commerce businesses. However, it’s essential that these businesses are aware of what could go wrong and have a set plan to address possible issues. Why Nailing Last-mile Delivery is Crucial for SuccessUSING AI TO IMPROVE DELIVERY TIMELINES By Anar Mammadov

Page 41

FEBRUARY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS According to Morgan Stanley, e-commerce accounted for 21% of global purchasing in 2021. This increase in online purchasing and selling has led to some hiccups in shipping logistics that still need to evolve with technological advancements and customer-focused policies. To avoid issues and inefficiencies within last-mile delivery, everything from the warehouse inventory process to driver staffing needs to be evaluated. One intervention that can help close shipping gaps is real-time logistics information. Advanced technologies that can provide up-to-date driving routes for delivery drivers, real-time stock numbers, and automated delivery processes can make last-mile delivery faster and more efficient. In addition, quick and accurate data analysis can help shipping companies change course if a process needs to be fixed in order to serve consumers better. SUCCESS WITH AIMachine learning is touching every industry imaginable. With lightning-fast data analysis capabilities, better decisions can be made by e-commerce companies and shipping companies seeking to improve their last-mile delivery process. Machine learning has been used to better predict customer preferences. By analyzing patterns in data, the last-mile process can be optimized. Once e-commerce companies and their shipping partners are aware of customer preference, shipping processes and routing can be adjusted accordingly. With correctly planned routes, shipping times can be cut significantly. AI can also improve the online customer experience. Today’s customers expect minute-by-minute delivery updates and communication about their orders. Customers can feel as if they have more control over the shipping process if they can track their package from the warehouse to their doorstep and make changes if necessary. For example, if they wish to be home for an important delivery, they can contact a company through chatbots or automatically adjust delivery times online in real time. There may be a number of deal breakers regarding customer satisfaction, but SpeedLine Solutions reports slow delivery times rank highest on the list. When a customer is counting on an item to arrive at a specific time, that time missed could lead to lost revenue for the e-commerce or shipping company due to customers refusing to use their service again. According to a study conducted by McKinsey, nine of 10 customers expect two to three-day shipments as the absolute standard. Other customer issues include deliveries turning up unexpectedly, shipments arriving damaged, a lack of shipping options at checkout, and poor communication and

AI and machine learning technologies can help shipping and logistics companies better serve these discerning customers.IMPORTANCE OF IMPROVEMENTAs the pandemic raged, same-day and next-day delivery became not only increasingly important, but expected. Many brick-and-mortar stores closed shop, and delivery became the only way consumers and many essential businesses could receive goods. As the pandemic has waned, however, people’s expectations for the delivery process have not shifted back to pre-pandemic standards. Now that consumers and businesses are aware of the ability of lightning-fast, accurate shipping and delivery, they continue to expect it. E-commerce only continues to boom, with Morgan Stanley predicting the market to hit upwards of $5.4 trillion by 2026. It’s predicted that the pandemic boom in online shopping will not flatten even as shutdowns end and brick-and-mortar businesses open their doors once again. The pandemic may have changed customer expectations forever, and businesses will need to continue to pivot and adjust their processes to keep up. Improving the timeliness of deliveries is advantageous not only for the customer but for the e-commerce company, as well. By closing gaps in delivery times and improving areas needing improvement, businesses can expect better profit margins. Not only will they retain more customers, but fuel costs, staffing costs, and operational expenses will also improve. Getting customers what they need in a timely manner is the basis of e-commerce success. The importance of the last-mile delivery process cannot be overstated. With innovators using the latest technology to help close service and delivery gaps, companies can significantly improve the most complex and most important components of their supply chains. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202340TECHNOLOGYFor many, winter lasts long into March, and it’s not uncommon to have the occasional snowfall in early April. This means fleets must have a comprehensive winterization action plan that lasts several months.WINTER SERVICEThe process of winterization continues to evolve, and advanced, sophisticated truck technology means fleets and their maintenance personnel must take a wide look at their trucks today. As an example, it’s becoming more common to have Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) as part of the specs when ordering and operating equipment. Features like lane departure warning systems use video, laser, and/or infrared lasers to detect visible road markings that are covered by snow, slush, salt, or ice. Forward-collision warning systems use front-facing cameras or radar to take corrective action. These sensors may also be affected by snow, slush, salt, or ice.COMMUNICATECommunicating with drivers can be key in properly maintaining these technologies, especially during the winter months. It is important to discuss with drivers that ADAS isn’t there simply to assist with safety and driving. Drivers still must be in control of the vehicle at all times and recognize when roads are slippery and that stopping distances will need to be increased even with ADAS. They may also need to clean the sensors, radars, and cameras more than once during a trip when driving in snowy or icy conditions. This process of communication with drivers has recently become front and center stage for many fleets, especially as organizations look to recruit and retain drivers through better safety measures. According to the American Trucking Association, the industry’s current shortage of over 80,000 truck drivers could grow to over 160,000 by 2030.Listen to the drivers as they can provide an immense amount of feedback when it comes to what the ADAS system is doing and how it is operating. For instance, some of the early versions of forward collision radars were detecting everything, and the drivers were reporting that the trucks were hard braking on their own, which is not ideal. These issues were likely rectified from their feedback and evolution of the technology.ADAS & TECHNICIANS Fleets must also ensure their technicians are trained on the latest ADAS technology. Technicians must be able to use diagnostic software to check for power, ground, and data link connections. Lack of knowledge on these items can lead to increased costs and a broken system. Training technicians on Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and aftermarket ADAS systems as well as providing them with refresher training is critical in keeping up with this ever-changing technology. Also, learning how the system interacts and communicates with the truck is a key component in diagnosing issues. The most significant culprit with ADAS issues typically centers on a drop in voltage. Technicians must start their diagnosis with the obvious point of corrosion—the battery. Fleets should add ADAS to their PM (preventive maintenance) schedules now. Servicing the ADAS is just as important as an oil change or tire rotation. Proactive monitoring will mitigate potential issues, even if the ADAS just needs a software upgrade.ITEMIZE M&R COSTSADAS repairs as well as other maintenance parts replacements can Why Fleets Should Include ADAS in their Winterization PlansTHE IMPORTANCE OF ADAS WINTER MAINTENANCE By Matthew Wiedmeyer

When fleet personnel have each cost center broken out individually, they can go line item by line item and review efficiencies in each bucket—how are rising repairs and parts costs affecting the scheduled maintenance, preventive maintenance, tire and brakes replacement, etc.?What’s more, the type of lease structure used by a fleet can further impact overall M&R and ADAS costs. Depending on the lease structure—full-service or unbundled—fleets may have an important choice when understanding what is included in their M&R services and costs. There are variable inputs that make up these costs, and it’s not as simple as just looking at M&R as a single bucket, per se. Fleets must be able to dissect all critical M&R parts and components like tires, brakes, service and repair, etc., and ADAS systems such as lane departure warning. If a fleet typically runs 500 tractors and there was an expected downtime of 8% to 10%, they may see their parts costs increase and their labor increase when they're tied to a non-negotiable full-service agreement over a period of time. However, with an unbundled agreement, these fleets aren’t tied to any one parts supplier in particular, freeing up the fleet organization to shop around for the best system price and availability. RETAIN & SAVEFleets that have the right visibility into their M&R costs, unbundled lease structure flexibility to apply to their M&R and Safety strategies, and proactive communication between drivers and fleet personnel will have a better competitive advantage this winter and beyond. Including drivers in the conversation around safety initiatives and acknowledging their input is important for their safety and retention. Also, your drivers and insurance company will both appreciate that you are spec’ing the latest and greatest safety features. As more fleets replace aging trucks with newer, safer equipment on the roads, they will keep drivers and others on the road safer, retain drivers at a higher rate, and also enjoy substantial savings in reduced accident and litigation costs as well as lower maintenance and repair expenditures.ABOUT THE AUTHOR 

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202342SAFETYFor the past several years, catalytic converter theft has dramatically increased. If you haven’t already had yours stolen, there’s a great chance you know someone who has. This is a growing concern for vehicle owners for several reasons: They can be incredibly expensive to replace and are astonishingly simple to steal. In fact, the whole process can be completed in fewer than two minutes. Catalytic converters are designed to convert pollutants into less-toxic gases and were designed in the 1970s to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency's regulation of exhaust emissions. The units are created using valuable metals, including platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These three metals are Platinum Group Metals (PGM) and can be extracted for a low risk/high reward payoff. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), between 2019 and 2020, catalytic converter theft claims increased 325% in a single year with around 14,500 thefts reported. The following year, thefts jumped up again, with more than 50,000 catalytic converters stolen off parked vehicles, according to Car and Driver. NICB President David Glawe says that theft has increased even more during the COVID-19 pandemic as supply chain challenges grew. “As the value of the precious metals contained within the catalytic converters continues to increase, so do the number of thefts of these devices,” Glawe said in a statement. “There is a clear connection between times of crisis, limited resources, and disruption of the supply chain that drives investors towards these precious metals.”CAT CONVERTER VALUEThe Platinum Group Metals in catalytic converters are incredibly valuable, even in small amounts. As of December 2022, rhodium is worth $13,000 an ounce, palladium is close to $2,000 an ounce, and platinum is worth around $1,000 an ounce. These prices are incredibly enticing, even though there are only a small amount of PGMs per catalytic converter. A thief would have to steal 14-15 catalytic converters to claim 1 ounce of each metal—a nice paycheck for what could take less than an hour of work. Protect Against Catalytic Converter TheftEMPLOY MONROE’S CAT CAGE By Jim Smith

Page 47

FEBRUARY 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS Supply and demand challenges make these metals even more valuable. If your catalytic converter is stolen, it could cost thousands of dollars to replace. Therefore, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. FINDING SOLUTIONSMonroe Truck Equipment’s mTEC products were created to address its customer’s core concerns. Monroe’s latest mTEC product is the Cat Cage, a 14-gauge stainless steel box that “cages” the catalytic converter, keeping it safe from theft. The Cat Cage features tamper-resistant fasteners and can be easily installed to the frame using OEM attachment points. It’s a lightweight design that can effectively deter catalytic converter theft, while still offering straightforward bottom access for greasing the driveshaft.Right now, the model is available for 2012 or newer Isuzu NPR and NPR-HD gas engine chassis, 2022-current Isuzu NQR and PRR gas engine chassis, Chevrolet W3500 & W4500 gas engine chassis, as well as 2022 to current Ford F350/F450/F550/F600 chassis cabs with a 7.3-L gas engine. The brand is working on expanding the design to accommodate more chassis. CAT CAGE BENEFITSThere are many benefits to the Cat Cages. It’s secure because the Cat Cage bolts securely to frame rails with tamper-resistant fasteners, surrounding all sides of your catalytic converter, deterring theft of this costly component and letting you rest easier when your truck isn’t within sight. It’s accessible because its sturdy but lightweight 14-gauge stainless steel is designed with bottom access so owners can easily grease the slip joint on the drive shaft without hassle or disassembly. It’s profitable because it keeps vehicles profitably in service by avoiding weeks of repair from theft and eliminates replacement costs of catalytic converters.ADDITIONAL MEASURESNot only does the Cat Cage improve security, allow for accessibility, and help keep operations profitable, the product includes additional features, such as etching and painting. Some municipalities across the country are collaborating with local businesses and the police force to offer free or inexpensive etching services. Users can etch either their license plate number or last six to eight digits of the car’s VIN onto the converter. This deters theft because the parts can be traced back to a real person, increasing the risk of getting caught or punished.

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM FEBRUARY 202344SAFETYSome automotive businesses have offered to paint their customer’s catalytic converter in an attempt to deter thefts, as auto part stores and scrapyards aren’t supposed to be able to buy marked parts. THEFT CRACKDOWNOn November 2, 2022, the United States Department of Justice announced a bust in a large catalytic converter theft ring. A collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement from across the nation executed a coordinated takedown of the leaders and associates of a national network of thieves, dealers, and processors for their involvement in stolen catalytic converters being sold to a metal refinery for tens of millions of dollars.Arrests, searches, and seizures took place in California, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, and Virginia. In total, 21 individuals in five states have been arrested and/or charged for their roles in the conspiracy.“This national network of criminals hurt victims across the country,” says FBI Director Christopher Wray. “They made hundreds of millions of dollars in the process—on the backs of thousands of innocent car owners. Today’s charges showcase how the FBI and its partners act together to stop crimes that hurt all too many Americans.”Additionally, legislators across the country have introduced bills to curb the rate of catalytic converter thefts. According to Bill Track 50, “over the last decade almost 350 bills have been introduced that aim to address some part of the catalytic converter craze. This year alone, 84 bills have been proposed in 29 states. Minnesota and Missouri each proposed 12 bills.”In November, federal legislators brought the fight to a nation-wide level. US Senators Ron Wyden and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn) introduced Senate legislation to combat the rise in catalytic converter thefts across the country. Representative Jim Baird (R-Ind) leads the efforts with affiliated legislation in the House of Representatives. The bill is called the Preventing Auto Recycling Theft (PART) Act. It works to make it easier for law enforcement to solve thefts and punish those who steal catalytic converters.WITH YOU IN MINDMonroe Truck’s mTEC team is dedicated to engineering creative solutions for its customers’ most pressing needs. Both fuel tanks have been granted Executive Orders from the California Air Resources Board.RETROFIT KITSTransfer Flow offers various OEM-quality retrofit filler neck kits for Ford, Ram, and General Motors pickups and chassis.
