They have wreaked havoc on budgets and will continue to do for the foreseeable future. Many fleet managers seek discounts to drive down the price their drivers pay to keep their tanks full. But increasingly, savvy fleet managers realize discounts don’t go far enough to contain costs. Any high-priced supplier can offer discounts and still not be the lowest available resource. It takes a more sophisticated sourcing strategy to find the consistently lowest price. Fleet managers are turning to data mapping at the enterprise level and intuitive mobile apps at the driver level to achieve the lowest possible pricing.Beyond supporting these tech-forward approaches, at U.S. Bank, we also work with fleet managers to hone their fuel networks to give more negotiating leverage. We take an overall perspective to understand where the fuel spend is and whether drivers are operating within the preferred fueling network. Reporting or scorecards are effective at measuring success; putting card controls in place to require drivers to use merchants in their fuel network ensures success.  The counterpart to high fuel prices is the push for electric seemingly everywhere but for fleet managers, the conversion probably raises more questions than answers at this point. What kind of equipment is needed? How much power is needed to support a fleet’s charging stations? How often will drivers need to charge? Do they need to charge at home? DECEMBER 2022 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS But the replenished stock comes with a high sticker price. A holdover from 2022 will be the need to maintain a fleet much longer than in the past. With the higher new-car costs, it will likely be most affordable to focus on repairs instead of replacement. Fleet managers need the flexibility of choosing the maintenance shop best equipped to provide cost-effective, reliable service. That’s why many use the Voyager Mastercard, accepted at virtually any maintenance merchant in the Voyager network, which we own and operate with more than 320,000 retail, truck stops, and maintenance provider locations across the United States. It’s more important than ever to have the flexibility to get the service you need when you need it—with full line of sight into every expense. Beyond repairs, drivers can use the Voyager Mastercard for any fuel-related expenses such as unexpected hotel stays when the weather or other surprises interrupt business as usual. This kind of peace of mind can be important when recruiting new drivers to help address staffing shortages that many fleets have faced in the past year.  Y To manage a fleet cost effectively and efficiently, fleet managers need data how and when it best serves them. Many have their own fleet management system. Others want to tap into the U.S. Bank portal. Either way, fleet managers need reliably relevant insights at their fingertips. To enable a seamless data exchange, even before but also during the pandemic, we invested in API development to enable easy integration with fleet management systems. We are also reimagining our portal to make it even easier to use. The result: streamlined data syncs from telematics to driver updates. This makes it simple to add a driver, remove a driver, monitor driver behavior, identify the lowest-price fuel through real-time alerts, and more—in seconds from the fleet manager’s preferred technology platform.  Definitely. Even with fluctuating fuel prices, limited vehicle inventories, and ongoing staffing shortages, more than ever, fleet managers have innovative tools to create opportunities for greater success. Whether a fleet is large or small, there are innovative strategies that give fleet managers greater control over costs, drivers, and their overall fleet stability. One exciting innovation introduced in 2022 that will gain increasing importance in the years ahead is creating a tokenization for our Voyager card. Tokenization replaces the number printed on the card with an alphanumeric key that contains no sensitive data and no exploitable value during a transaction, which paves the way for mobile and other cardless transactions. Basically, it enables a driver to use cardless payments for tolls, EV charging, or at truck scales, easily, securely, and with complete accountability. These innovations together with the enhanced controls that fleet managers can now command help make the most of each opportunity for success while preparing for and preventing costly challenges.FOR MORE INFORMATION Travis Lachinski is the vice president Systems. This is a product that absolutely smashes the performance benchmarks set by today’s hydraulic liftgates. To frame how truly revolutionary this liftgate is, it helps to start with a basic understanding of today’s liftgates. Essentially all modern liftgates are powered by hydraulics that require electricity from a motor. These motors get their power from batteries onboard the vehicle. This arrangement works well in many ways, but hydraulics do come among them are energy consumption, risk of oil spills, sensitivity to extreme temperatures, and high maintenance costs. Further, the majority of the energy input to a liftgate is lost as it translates to a moving cargo platform, so they are notoriously abusive to truck batteries. Keeping these batteries charged can be a challenge, especially on trailers, since their added length and intermittent connection to the tractor only make the problem of inadequate power more pronounced. Most attempts to solve the energy supply-demand mismatch of liftgates have focused on increasing the power supplied. The ReGEN takes a comprehensive approach to both sides of the equation, and it drastically reduces the amount of power demanded by the whole system. It employs a brand-new drive concept to replace the entire hydraulic system developed in exclusive partnership with Rise Robotics. The ReGEN can recover energy from a downward cycle, and the total energy input required to operate one is only between 10% and 50% of a hydraulic equivalent liftgate, depending on how it is loaded. The ReGEN RailTrac is oil-free, so operators never have to worry about a broken hydraulic line causing a mess on their customer’s parking lot or somewhere on the road. Another fantastic benefit to this liftgate is that it is completely “connected.” Remote diagnostics are integrated with the system’s hardware, providing remote visibility to the system performance far beyond simply reporting battery state of charge or cycles. The technology inside this liftgate delivers hydraulic-like forces with incredible precision and at a fraction of the energy input. Page 27

DECEMBER 2022 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS Municipalities responsible to keep sewer lines free from debris and blockages face the challenge of maintaining these lines during a time of rising fuel prices and water scarcity throughout much of the United States. To reduce costs and conserve these resources, cleaning crews must adopt more efficient cleaning equipment, tools, and techniques to implement water-intensive cleaning that can involve a hundred gallons of water per minute. Fuel is also consumed to operate the sewer truck, vacuum system, water pump, operating platform, and pressure/flow compensation hydraulic system.Fortunately, using more effective tools and methods can cut the industry’s fuel and water usage. Inefficient sewer cleaning nozzles and poor cleaning techniques can cause crews to make many passes to clear a line. But this wastes fuel and water. When crews inefficiently use water, additional fuel, time, and labor are required to drive to the nearest fire hydrant to refill the tank. Dan Story, a trainer and operations manager at KEG Technologies, a manufacturer of sewer and storm line products, says crews must pay attention to water conservation or they can’t do their jobs. Story says that with high fuel prices and a scarce water supply, municipalities look to stretch their resources with better training and tools.INCREASING EFFICIENCYTo clean sewer lines more efficiently, municipalities should consider using more effective tools and methods. Normally, sewer crews use jetting and/or vacuuming systems to remove debris and blockages. With jetting, an operator places a high-pressure water hose with a high-performance nozzle into the line. Operators release high-pressure water from the sewer jet truck to dislodge debris and flush it into a manhole. As debris is removed, the hose is pushed deeper into the sewer. Jetting typically involves using between 50 to 85 gallons of water per minute to flush out debris lodged in the pipe. A vacuum may also be used to remove dislodged debris and transfer it to disposal bins.HIGH EFFICIENCY TOOLSOne of the most effective ways to decrease water and fuel use while improving cleaning efficiency of sewer vacuum trucks is by using a high-performance, Tier 3 nozzle. With improved fluid dynamics, these optimize the cleaning process while using less water, revolutions per These nozzles cost more, but reduce fuel and water costs and enable faster cleaning.Nozzles are classified in three efficiency-based tiers: Tier 1 Story, however, a surprising number of municipalities and third-party contractors still do not use Tier 3 nozzles for sewer cleaning, despite the benefits. What sets the Tier 3 nozzles apart is the fluid mechanics engineering on a par with the aerodynamics of race cars. After exiting the jetter hose, water travels into the body of the nozzle before moving through smooth, curved channels. This design enables the water to maintain its power and speed before entering the nozzle’s replaceable titanium ceramic inserts, which help straighten the water stream. Next, the water is further funneled to enable an even tighter water pattern to emerge. The internal workings of the nozzle redirect the energy of the high-pressure water entering the nozzle so it performs as efficiently as possible. This results in more thrust and power using less water.“If there is turbulence in the water as it exits the nozzle, it dramatically reduces the overall cleaning power,” Story says. “The most effective Tier 3 nozzles create tight water patterns that efficiently clean the pipe wall and produce a powerful water stream to move debris long distances while propelling the nozzle through the lines.”TIER 3 EFFICIENCYIn the case of KEG’s Tier 3 nozzles, such as the Torpedo and OMG models, the high-performance design of the fluid mechanics leaves little room for power losses and excessive turbulence; therefore it can achieve 98% efficiency. In contrast, Tier 3 nozzles are designed not to impede or stop the water flow. The result essentially eliminates water turbulence and produces a much more powerful flow of water directed from the nozzle. In the case of KEG’s Tier 3 nozzles, such as the OMG model, the high-performance design of the fluid mechanics leaves little room for power losses and excessive turbulence and so can achieve 98% efficiency.

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM DECEMBER 202224OPERATIONSAccording to Story, a Tier 1, 30-degree drilled nozzle running 72 gallons a minute at 2,200 PSI will only exert 13 lbs of force to move debris nine feet away from the nozzle. But a high-efficiency Tier-3 nozzle running 60 gallons a minute at 2,000 PSI will exert 98 lbs of force nine feet away.He adds that efficient Tier 3 nozzles also allow a lower water pressure to be used from the truck, which saves water.“If you lower the pressure, you lower the gallons of water being used per minute,” Story says. “This results in water savings. With the Tier 3 nozzles, you can lower the required water pressure in PSI without compromising power.”CLEANING SPEEDSSuperior cleaning techniques can also reduce fuel, time, and labor. According to Story, the main mistake most operators make is when they do not understand how their cleaning speed affects their performance. “The hardest thing to overcome is that for years operators were taught to quickly spray water on the way up the sewer line and then clean as they return,” he says. “But that wastes water because it does not move the debris or clean the walls sufficiently.” With poor techniques, operators are often forced to make several passes to remove the material, wasting water. “Even after that, I have been in situations where after a cleaning to ask if the line was even cleaned,” Story shares.“Most operators want to run up the line in a hurry and clean as they come back because it is how they were taught, but it is impossible to ‘dig a hole from the bottom up,’” Story explains. “When they shoot past all the debris going in, they are trying to bring it all out at once, which is more difficult.”Instead, Story advises operators to go slow when cleaning lines.ft and 60 ft per minute,” Story says. “Remember, at 60 ft per minute, you are traveling one foot per second. However, at one foot a second, you are wetting the pipe, not cleaning it.”CLEANING EFFICIENTLY Story advises operators to pull the nozzle down as they go into a line, observe how dirty it is, and then adjust their cleaning speed accordingly.“If you are not getting a lot of debris back in the first 50 ft, then you can increase your cleaning speed,” Story says. When the operator reaches a manhole in the line, he advises dialing down the water pressure to 900 to 1,000 PSI as they return. organic materials going in, and some of the rocks in it will fall out of the flow,” Story says. “By cleaning as you go in, however, you’re able to get the dirt and debris out of the line, so on the return the rocks will move much easier inside the pipe.”He states that operators often compensate for a lack of power cleaning with Tier 1 or 2 nozzles by increasing the pressure and the water flow. However, with a Tier 3 nozzle, a lower pressure is possible.“A Tier 3 nozzle can generate the same amount of cleaning power as a Tier 1 or 2 using 40 gallons and 1,200 PSI, saving time, water, and fuel,” Story says. “But the trick to the debris up, and let the flow work like a conveyor belt, carrying the debris out. If you clean correctly, the water is going to carry the debris off. When you get to the end of the line, just dial your pressure back down and rinse the pipe as you come out. When you come back, the job is in a second time.” One of the most effective ways to decrease water and fuel use while improving cleaning efficiency of sewer vacuum trucks is by using a high-performance, Tier 3 nozzle like the Torpedo from KEG Technologies. The most effective Tier 3 nozzles like the OMG from KEG create tight water patterns that efficiently clean the pipe wall and produce a powerful water stream to move debris long distances while propelling the nozzle through the lines.

DECEMBER 2022 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS SAVE TIME & WATERWith 6- to 15-inch diameter sewer lines, it should be possible 95% of the time to go from manhole to manhole and clean in a single pass, Story says. “This takes a fraction of the time and resources to make one pass versus making several passes to remove the same material.”It also eliminates extra trips to a nearby fire hydrant to refill the water tank, which can cost crews an hour or more to put all equipment back on the truck and set it up again when they return. With a combination of the right tools and techniques, Story estimates that sewer crews can save approximately 9 to 17% in vehicle fuel costs, including travel to refill water tanks. As municipalities and contractors seek to reduce the use of costly fuel and scarce water, using the most efficient Tier 3 nozzles and cleaning methods will go a long way to stretch their funds and conserve valuable resources. Just as important, adopting industry-proven cleaning techniques will help to protect against future increases in the cost of fuel and water. To reduce costs and conserve fuel and water, cleaning crews are compelled to adopt more efficient tools and techniques, like those from KEG Technologies, to implement cleaning that can involve a hundred gallons of water per minute.ABOUT THE AUTHOR Del Williams is a technical writer who lives in Torrance, California. The downside is quick release design ratchets will allow more damaging debris and dirt to enter ratcheting mechanisms compared to a fully closed back model.RATCHET MAINTENANCEProper serviceability and maintenance are key to getting the most out of your new ratchet. A quality hand tool brand will have spare parts and be willing to service a ratchet years after initial purchase. Additionally, quality brands will back their ratchets with a lifetime warranty. The ratchet is likely the most neglected tool in any toolbox. It is put to the test daily, but seldom taken apart to be cleaned and lubricated. Below are some tips on maintaining ratchets for years of reliable service:1Take it apart as soon as you sense a problem or do not hear a clean smooth ratcheting sound. On pear-shaped models, you will usually find two screws or a snap ring holding in place a back plate.2 Inspect the pawl and gear to see if they are in good condition. About 95% of damaged ratchets have been over torqued, causing the gears to strip but not break. One will notice this as a shearing of the gears; otherwise, pieces of the ratchets will be found in the head.Take out the gear and clean it thoroughly once the head has been removed. Use a degreasing product to clean. Spray the head with the degreaser and switch the reverse lever back and forth to remove the dirt from between the housing and the pawl.4 Replace the gear and lubricate with good oil after the dirt is removed. Do not use WD40 or other degreasing products. These products clean but to do lubricate properly. Simply use a little oil. Do not use grease, as it will attract dirt that builds up and turns into a grinding compound, wearing the ratchet out prematurely. Replace the back plate, and the ratchet will be back to new condition.6Perform the above steps annually to maximize the performance and reliability of the ratchets.ROUND HEAD RATCHETSWith the round head ratchets, there is a ring on the moveable ratchet mechanism that must be removed. Follow the same steps as above lubricating the ratchet.MAKE AN INVESTMENTRatchets are essential to getting a job done quickly and properly. When using any ratchet choose the right size. Don’t try to use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to do the job of a 1/2-inch model. That means using the largest ratchet whenever possible.before buying, implement an annual maintenance and inspection routine, and consider long-term serviceability. As the workhorse in a toolbox, consider the next ratchet purchase an investment—one that if chosen properly should last a lifetime. A cheaply priced ratchet may cost less upfront but could prove much more costly if it damages a work piece, fails and cannot be serviced, or even causes personal injury.Happy ratcheting.ABOUT THE AUTHOR thousands of professionals build and maintain their Gray and Dynamic tool 

They are the lifeblood of our business and true partners to our clients. Overall, I’d say the key element of a successful fleet maintenance management program is a quality preventive maintenance program. The saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure,” comes to mind. Quality preventive maintenance starts with highly trained and skilled technicians who can identify and repair issues before they become catastrophic failures that lead to fleet downtime. Of course, this also includes up-to-date telematics and expert fleet managers. I’d also add top-notch training to the list. We are proud to offer FleeTec Academy, our intensive, hands-on residence training program. There, we teach truck maintenance and repair skills from the ground up. Our FleeTec graduates have seen great success with the program, and a few even competed at our company’s TopTech competition. We also offer advanced training for our more established techs. If we can find something before it breaks, before it becomes an issue, it’s a lot cheaper to repair than after it breaks completely. If we find it during a standard inspection, I ask, “When can we schedule this for repair?” That reduces their long-term downtime and total cost of ownership. It’s just like a roof on a house—you need to catch the leak before it starts causing real damage. If you repair it too long after the leak happens, you’ve got to repair the roof and all the water damage it causes. I had a customer that lost

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM DECEMBER 2022TECHNOLOGYFor fleet-reliant businesses, rightsizing is as applicable to the fleet individually as it is to the overall business. Integrated fleet solutions offer automated data capture and reporting so fleets can quickly see productivity metrics to help rightsize their operation for improved productivity, uptime, and ROI.RIGHTSIZE THE FLEETSince the start of the pandemic, many businesses have had to consider rightsizing their operations, whether to meet the increased demand of e-commerce shoppers or adjust to decreased business volumes. Furthermore, labor shortages combined with a mass exodus of the workforce has caused some businesses to perform a structural reevaluation to ensure operations continue running smoothly. For businesses that rely on fleet assets to carry out services or transport employees or goods, rightsizing the fleet is a critical step in reducing unnecessary expenses while still meeting customer or client expectations.Rightsizing your fleet can encompass a number of actions, from scaling the quantity of assets and/or employees up or down to reorganizing management and restructuring processes. Using productivity-related fleet data, fleet managers can better determine what and where changes should be made for optimal fleet efficiency. METRICS TO TRACKThere are several key metrics fleets can use to gain actionable rightsizing insights: asset usage, shop productivity, and operating cost.Asset usage data allows fleet managers to assess vehicle and equipment overview of asset usage by tracking daily mileage, whether with paper inspections, telematics, or fleet seeing wild fluctuations in use—maybe a vehicle has gone unused for several days for no discernible reason or perhaps it’s clocking more miles than normal—there could be a scaling opportunity. Fleets using FMS and other fleet solutions can quickly and easily break down asset usage on a more granular level, including asset assignment and duration, usage percentage, status history, and service costs thanks to automatic data collection and aggregation. Having instant access to this data allows managers to hone in on imbalances in fleet usage that could be driving up expenses, such as inflated service costs for overused vehicles. Imbalance in fleet usage is a good indicator that the number of assets in your fleet needs to be adjusted.Whether you service fleet assets in house or outsource to a third-party provider, it pays to track shop productivity. Improper staffing, extended lead times on replacement parts, poor organization, and inefficient communication are just some of the factors that can negatively affect shop productivity. Before you can tackle the source of a problem, however, you have to know that the problem exists. Technicians can use the software’s native app to clock in and out of assigned work orders as well as communicate important task-related information within the work order. Because all this data is collected and organized automatically, managers can quickly compare service duration against active time on the job to find potential issues. Fleets outsourcing maintenance can use the software’s outsourced maintenance automation feature to collect service-related data from the shops they frequent.Regardless of your method for tracking shop productivity, this metric can help you determine the best options for rightsizing when overhauling processes or optimizing labor hours.Tracking and monitoring operating cost per asset allows fleets to determine which assets are running up the bill. This is a pertinent piece of information when it comes to future procurement, but it’s also quite helpful if you’ve determined that asset reduction will be part of your rightsizing strategy. An asset's operating cost is basically what it sounds like: a sum of all costs associated with that asset, including registration, insurance, licenses, fuel, service, etc.Fleets using FMS can use automated reports to easily view the operating cost for any asset and compare assets’ costs to quickly pick out the money pits. While the software configures the reports, users can customize the view to surface exactly the data they need and filter out the extra, helping fleets make informed decisions on where and how to scale asset quantity.DATA-DRIVEN DECISIONSRightsizing a fleet operation can be a daunting task, but with the right data at your fingertips the chances of success are greatly improved. Whether you’re using digital fleet solutions or collecting data manually, tracking the above key metrics can help you make data-driven rightsizing decisions to improve productivity, decrease unnecessary spend, and increase ROI.ABOUT THE AUTHOR 

The primary components of the Freedom eGen system consists of a lithium-ion battery pack, inverter/charger, auxiliary alternator, and solar wherever possible. This system is a compelling alternative to generators and engine idling to power jobsite and work tools, which helps reduce fuel costs, emissions, and noise pollution. A Li-Ion battery pack delivers six to eight times the life of traditional lead-acid batteries and can be drawn down much further into the battery bank. The system is regulated by Xantrex’s Intelligent Battery System. Freedom eGen supports charging from a second alternator, which is recommended for charging of lithium-ion batteries or shore power when needed. When this system is paired with our solar panel solutions, the continual trickle charge provides a boost in power to draw from on the jobsite operation of tools and equipment. The main reason that lithium batteries are such a game changer is that they can be completely discharged without damage and provide more cycles than the typical deep cycle battery. So, if you have a 600-amp hour lithium battery, you have 600-amp hours of usable power. Lead-acid batteries, on the other hand can only be discharged 50% at most without causing them damage. Most commercial vehicles have 400-amp hour battery banks, which only gives you 200-amp hours of usable power. Making that even less effective, most OEMs only allow you to discharge the batteries to a 30% state, so in that case, you're hardly getting any usable battery power at all. As the world's lightest metal, lithium provides a huge weight advantage. Li-Ion batteries are 60 to 80% lighter than their lead counterparts. A typical Group 31 battery weighs about 75 lbs while a similar Li-Ion battery only weighs 28 lbs. Li-Ion batteries cost more upfront than traditional batteries, but the additional life cycles and amount of power work trucks can draw before idling would be needed to recharge these batteries can save significant costs over its life. solution that essentially turns diesel trucks into hybrids through its idle mitigation system when in park. It also helps make the onboard power system run quietly and more efficiently. Once a work truck is in park, the system shuts down the engine and provides all power from the Li-Ion battery. During extended stationary use, the system manages start/stop to recharge the batteries as needed. This solution is especially useful for work trucks, such as sewage vacuum trucks, bucket trucks, service vehicles, or trucks using high-powered hydraulic systems like cranes to supply the necessary power without needing to constantly idle or connect to shore power. But, when it comes to spec’ing your work trucks with power solutions, going with the cheapest options available may prove to be more costly in the long run. Traditional AGM or lead-acid batteries need to be replaced more often than premium expect a lead-acid battery to last 400 to 500 cycles, whereas a quality lithium-ion battery may last 4,000 to 5,000 cycles depending on the use. battery by the length of its warranty. Xantrex offers a 10-year warranty on all its lithium-ion batteries. When it comes to inverters, “budget” options may not be robust enough to withstand a sudden inrush of current required to start high-powered tools or equipment, which may end up damaging electronics. A premium inverter would shut down if the inrush of current is too much, which helps prevent damage to downstream loads. What’s more, for work truck operators powering a variety of high-powered tools or equipment, extended surge power is needed. A compressor might need 5 to 9 seconds for example, so you need an inverter that can handle that duration. So, it’s important to check surge power ratings. Low-end inverters often don’t clearly state output performance. All Xantrex inverters list this information so you can match the exact power output specifications you need for your operation.FOR MORE INFORMATION Mitul Chandrani has worked in the trucking industry for close Electronics. Every system is built to order and provides the following benefits: • Doubles the storage volume over traditional shelf/drawer systems. • Increases productivity of work crews by helping them get on/off jobsites quicker. • Reduces injuries—no more lifting heavy items from awkward positions or climbing in and out of a van, injuring knees, ankles, and backs. As seen in the chart above, Extendobed more than doubles the total storage capacity over traditional shelf/drawer storage systems by fully using the “dead space” in the middle of the cargo area.  A half-width ExtendoWall mounted to slide out the back or side door combined with a traditional shelf system for the other side is an option for those that may need both types of storage systems. As mentioned, Extendobed will also help reduce injuries to backs, shoulders, knees, and ankles because workers are not picking up heavy items from awkward angles or climbing in and out of their trucks or vans multiple times per day.Find out more, visit www.extendobed.com or call 800.752.0706.ExtendobedLOOKS TOUGH.
