SoundOff is dedicated to delivering solutions that create safer working environments for all. Vehicle lighting is important for several reasons. Safety is the number one reason. Work trucks are often used in hazardous environments, such as construction sites, road work zones, or emergency situations, like accidents in the roadway. Vehicle lighting is critical in these environments to ensure that the truck and the worker are visible to oncoming traffic, pedestrians, and even others at the worksite. Proper lighting alerts others of presence, helping prevent accidents and injuries. Compliance is another important factor. Many industries have specific regulations to abide by. It’s important to ensure these requirements are met. Citations and fines imposed SOUNDOFF SIGNAL OFFERS LIGHTING FOR VOCATIONAL APPLICATIONS
APRIL 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 11by regulatory and law enforcement agencies may be unnecessary cost affecting budgets.Lastly, productivity is also of high importance. Work truck operators often work long hours or in many cases, after dark. Appropriate lighting will help these workers not only see better but perform their job more efficiently and not to mention, more safely. For every pivotal, high-pressure moment, SoundOff is on the scene—lighting the way so those working can focus on the job at hand. There are several consequences when adequate warning lighting is not used. First and foremost, increased risk of accidents and injuries. As previously mentioned, without sufficient lighting, these fleet vehicles are less visible to others around them. This increases the risk of accidents, especially in dark conditions or dangerous environments where visibility is already impaired. If an accident were to occur, fleet owners and operators risk an increase in insurance premiums, workers compensations experience modifications, and liability costs, which, overall, adds to company expense. Not to mention, if an accident should occur, there is the risk of a ruined reputation. Customers, employees, and the public may view the company as unsafe or irresponsible, which can lead to loss of business or damage to the brand. All in all, investing in effective and efficient vehicle lighting solutions enables fleet owners and operators to protect their drivers, their reputation, and avoid costly fines and fees. The mpower silicone lighting line of products is a must. This technology is a versatile, durable, and high-performance lighting system designed to be used in a wide range of applications, like work trucks, tow trucks, and other commercial vehicles. One key feature of this type of lighting is its modular design. mpower silicone lighting consists of individual LED light modules that allow for flexible installation and customization. The light modules are made of high-quality silicone material, which is resistant to water, dust, and other environmental factors, ensuring long-lasting performance and durability. mpower products and other SoundOff Signal products include programmable flash patterns, synchronization capabilities, and multiple color options. The control systems used to operate these functions can be wireless or hardwired depending on the choice of install. Product offerings include but are not limited to lightbars, beacons, traffic controllers, perimeter lighting, interior lighting, and more.
MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202312INDUSTRY INSIGHT Of course! APRIL 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 17International HV engineers also placed controls and displays in easy-to-reach places for optimized safety—even the air horn has been relocated because of driver feedback. There is also now more space in the cab, increasing leg room, elbow room, and hip room. The armrest height has also been adjusted, and improved door seals and a redesigned window also reduce noise for a quieter, more comfortable ride. Also contributing to comfort is an all-new, reengineered from the ground up HVAC system. It features redesigned vents that improve cabin airflow and circulate heat in the winter and allow side vents to be completely closed. Not only does the new HVAC system improve driver comfort, it also contributes to improved safety because of the system’s max defrost setting that clears a windshield faster than the competition.SAFETY CENTRALIncreasing truck safety for operators and other motorists has been a significant factor in truck design. The International HV Series is no different, featuring designs and technology that give drivers confidence behind the wheel. The series features standard front and rear air disc brakes that provide shorter stops with more braking power. The HV Series’ electronic stability control assists in rollover and under- and over-steer situations as well as slippery and heavy braking situations. The HV Series’ sloped hood also provides better visibility of the road ahead, and one-piece windows, unobstructed side views, improved hood and cab mirror placements, and a low-rake windshield also contribute to improved visibility. This is also ideal for vocational applications such as construction or a presence at crowded jobsites where optimum visibility is a must. There are also added features in the instrument cluster that aid in driver safety. One toggle card featured in the digital display shows drivers specific axle loading; safety alerts, such as veering too far out of the lane, are also displayed. Drivers can also easily monitor tire pressure from the digital cluster to improve safety and fuel economy.DIAMOND LOGICWould it be an International truck without the ability to feature the International Truck Diamond Logic electrical system? MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202318OPERATIONSThe first workable commercial truck was built by Gottlieb Daimler in Germany in 1896. In North America, the first semi-truck was built by Alexander Winton in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1898. The first commercial vocational truck was sold by Autocar in 1899. It was a parcel delivery vehicle with a 700-lb payload and the option between a 5- or 8-hp engine. But how things have changed! In 2022, some 309,615 Class 8 trucks and 229,821 Class 5-7 trucks were produced. Trucking has become the central pivot around which the American commercial system moves. The truck has become fundamental to economic progress. While truck engineers made strides from materials to electronics over the years, certain things have not changed. I call these the “Truck Fundamentals.” These are the principles that govern vehicle performance, how wheels receive power and torque, and how various auxiliary devices receive power. To create an efficient and productive transport organization, everyone involved should understand how these principles are managed.First, the salesperson should have a firm grip on these fundamental principles and articulate them to the customer. The ability to explain these in a forthright and simple manner instills both confidence in the dealership and the product. The buyer should also understand these principles so the product purchased conforms to the operation’s specifications and needs. Next, the fleet manager must have a strong understanding of the operation the truck is meant to fulfill and how these needs should be met. Often, the fleet manager writes the specification where the fundamentals are articulated. Lastly, the driver or operator should understand the fundamental aspects of the vehicle so they operate the vehicle at peak performance. Understanding the vehicle basics and its equipment also helps the driver or operator describe any failure modes observed during vehicle operation. So, what are these fundamental principles?UNDERSTAND THE JOBThe very first principle is possibly so simple that it often eludes us. It is to fully understand and be able to articulate the operation of the truck. What weights will the truck carry over Understanding Truck FundamentalsA DEEPER DIVE INTO WHAT MAKES A TRUCK A VOCATIONAL ASSETBy Joe Johansson The first Fruehauf "semi-trailer" created in 1914 for a Detroit lumber merchant. Source: The Fruehauf Trailer Historical Society
APRIL 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 19what topography? Is the work always on-highway, which then leads to the question of what road surface will be traversed? What kind of cruise speed will the truck operate? Does it require exportable hydraulic, mechanical, or electrical power to various systems on the vehicle? And does this power need to be available only when the vehicle is stationary or when it is also moving?POWER & TORQUENext, it’s important to understand power and torque and how they are channeled to the wheels. Torque is measured on a dynamometer, and power is calculated using the formula Power = (Torque x Engine RPM) / 5,252.The power produced in the cylinders is called Gross Power, and what “arrives” at the transmission is Net Power. Net Power is less than Gross Power due to accessories and internal losses. Finally, the power that arrives at the wheels is called Wheel Power. Note that Wheel Power is quite less than Gross Power because of efficiency losses along the way. Torque, however, is proportional to speed: The slower a shaft is made to turn at constant power through various gears, the higher the torque. This means that the torque at the wheel can be as high as 40 to 50 times net engine torque in first gear depending on transmission and axle ratios slowing down the wheel.Think of torque as the twisting force generated on the crankshaft of the engine and then transmitted down through the driveline to the wheels. Power is proportional to rotational speed multiplied by torque. If there is no rotation of the crankshaft of the engine, there is no power produced. However, there is an engine speed defined by the speed and load on the engine known as the engine sweet spot. This point of high power is the most efficient engine speed to operate, and it is where you want to cruise. So, how much performance is needed? Ideally you should be able to attain your desired cruise speed on a 0.75% to 1.25% grade in the top gear. The underside of a chassis equipped with an Allison transmission.
MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202320Knowing speed on grade at different GVW/GCW weights is important, and a dealer should be able to show and interpret this.TRANSMISSION USEAnother fundamental factor that must be understood is the type of transmission to use. Automated transmissions use electronics and air to automatically shift gears. Another form of automaticity is the torque converter transmission, which has fewer gears; however, the torque converter accounts for many of the low gears in a manual and automated manual transmission. A torque converter-equipped transmission with planetary gearing makes very smooth shifts and is able to make these shifts at full power. This is beneficial in off-road conditions where a loss of traction can occur during a momentary output shaft disengagement when a shift is made on a manual or automated manual transmission. Additionally, a fully laden heavy vehicle possesses an extraordinary amount of momentum or kinetic energy when traveling at speed. In order to stop efficiently this energy has to be absorbed and dissipated into the surrounding air. This is done through the service brakes that convert this inherent energy into heat. Disc brakes are generally better at dissipating this absorbed heat than drum brakes. This energy is a function of the weight of the vehicle and the square of its speed. Take, for example, a 60,000-lb vehicle traveling at 60 mph. If speed is increased to 70 mph and it hits a stationary object, it dissipates 36% more energy than at 60 mph. But at 80 mph, it dissipates 78% more. It is quite frightening to recognize the impact that a speeding heavy truck makes when hitting a stationary object.POWERING EQUIPMENTMost vocational trucks have systems to generate exportable engine power via power take-offs. But deciding on the right system does require a good understanding of the truck operation. Applications that require PTO operation when moving at speed are recommended to use engine-driven systems. This means either:• FEPTO (Front Engine PTO) units driven directly off the crankshaft at the front of the engine• REPTO (Rear Engine PTO) units driven off a gear on the output end of the engine, often with a special flywheel• Torque converter automatic transmissions that offer a direct drive from the engineSnowplows, concrete mixers, and refuse packers are typical trucks that require continuous engine-driven PTO power. Note that manual and automated manual transmissions interrupt PTO power when shifts occur, as the PTO gear is driven off a countershaft, which momentarily stops during a gear shift. In conclusion, the importance of understanding these fundamental aspects of the technology of the truck is important for any fleet owner or operator. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202324PREVENTING SSOsProper sanitary sewer systems are meant to collect and transport all the sewage that flows into them to a publicly owned treatment works (POTW). However, occasional unintentional discharges of raw sewage from municipal sanitary sewers occur in almost every system. The first line of defense against SSOs is to use tools, specifically powerful nozzles, to clean sewer lines and remove debris to prevent a blockage. In this effort, using Tier 3 nozzles instead of Tier 1 or 2 nozzles can be an advantage.Although rated for water efficiency (Tier 1: about 30% efficient; Tier 2: 50 to 60% efficient; and Tier 3: 75 to 98% efficient), top Tier 3 nozzles can also more reliably direct the most force with less water at lower pressure to remove debris. Efficient Tier 3 nozzles, such as KEG’s Torpedo and OMG models, are designed with fluid mechanics engineering on par with the aerodynamics of race cars. After exiting the jetter hose, water travels into the body of the nozzle before moving through smooth, curved channels. This design enables the water to maintain its power and speed before entering the nozzle’s replaceable titanium ceramic inserts, which help straighten the water stream. The water is further funneled to enable an even tighter water pattern to emerge. The power and reliability of a Tier 3 nozzle can help operators clean more line more effectively before a water tank refill. According to Story, a Tier 1, 30-degree drilled nozzle running 72 gallons a minute at 2,200 PSI will only exert 13 lbs of force to move debris 9 ft away from the nozzle. In contrast, a high-efficiency Tier 3 nozzle running 60 gallons a minute at 2,000 PSI will exert 98 lbs of force 9 ft away.IDENTIFYING OBSTRUCTIONSThe EPA can hold municipalities accountable for preventing SSOs in hundreds or thousands of miles of sewer line, annually. Therefore, crews must provide proper cleaning and maintenance. Waiting for a separate crew with a CCTV truck to access pipe conditions can be insufficient. Out of sight, obstructions will develop into blockages that trigger SSOs when the camera crew cannot assess all line on a regular basis. To enable timely sewer line inspection when a CCTV truck crew is unavailable, some manufacturers in the industry have developed camera nozzles that capture video while cleaning. For example, KEG’s KleenSight camera-nozzle system provides operators with the ability to clean sewer and storm lines while recording upright high-definition video. The device has a self-leveling camera head and provides its own illumination. Only a jetter hose connection is required—no cables or wires. The camera captures the video in memory, and the files are automatically date- and time-stamped for Wi-Fi download.Using a nozzle-camera during cleaning can capture video that shows if obstructions exist in a pipe that should be removed before becoming a problem. REMOVING OBSTRUCTIONSWhen a serious blockage occurs, it usually results in an SSO, and a chain Municipalities can cost effectively reduce sanitary sewer overflows to virtually zero with best-in-class equipment and cleaning habits.
APRIL 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 25cutter is used to resolve the situation. Most are hydraulically powered. Although this reduces the overall cost of the unit, many hydraulic cutters supply insufficient power or torque to cut through the heavy roots, hard mineral deposits, grease, or wipes that can be at the core of a blockage. In some cases, the chain cutter can stall or seize up.“Chain cutter nozzles that utilize water pressure are more efficient and can deliver the required torque to cut through thick masses,” Story advises. “The high-pressure water enters the chain cutter nozzle chamber and is directed to spin the cutting chains at high velocity.”As an example, he points to a chain cutter that has a high-speed, high-torque, water-driven design. The chain cutter can eliminate heavy root blockages, scale, rust, mineral deposits, hardened grease, and accumulated debris.“When you remove the roots and debris from the lines, it becomes easy for future debris to pass through on its own,” Story explains. “This eliminates the problem of backing up and sanitary sewer overflow.”PROACTIVE, NOT REACTIVEWhen SSOs occur and municipalities are out of EPA compliance, it can be difficult to do more than react. However, proactively maintaining sewer line with the most effective tools and tactics is vital to prevent and resolve SSOs. For this reason, KEG offers customized training programs to municipalities that specifically target the challenge of SSOs.With the goal of eliminating SSOs, the training program corrects common cleaning errors, such as excessive operator speed, requiring multiple passes, which ends up wasting water, labor, and time. Proper line assessment and cleaning speed are taught, which allow operators to adjust to circumstances as needed while minimizing water use. When operators complete the training, most will understand how to “chop up the debris and let the flow of water work like a conveyor belt, carrying the debris out.” They will be trained to “go from manhole to manhole and clean in a single pass.” It takes a fraction of the time and resources to make one pass versus making several passes to remove the same material. The results of being proactive with equipment and training to minimize SSOs have been more successful than might be expected.“One city in Arizona that we have worked with has not had an SSO in 30 years,” Story says. “It’s all about staying on top of your game.”ABOUT THE AUTHORDel Williams is a technical writer who lives in Torrance, California. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202326MAINTENANCEPurchasing a Used EV?Check itsBatteryHealth First.USE THE EV BATTERY HEALTH MOBILE APP
APRIL 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 27AQ The battery pack is the single most expensive part of an EV, accounting for 30 to 45% of the total cost of the vehicle. With the anticipated influx of used EVs entering the market, an EV battery health score will help drive confidence and transparency at the point of sale. Most, but not all, EV batteries are built to last. During our initial testing, the average used battery health score reported was high, with an average score of 4.6 (out of 5). However, as batteries age, the number of outliers increases, highlighting the importance of evaluating each individual vehicle. Our EV Battery Health tool that is in development addresses three of the top five barriers to EV adoption among non-considerers, including consumers’ concerns about low range, the cost of battery replacements, and batteries not holding their charge. Furthermore, most EV considerers would consider a used EV at 90% (or 10% degradation) capacity with a battery health certificate. Ultimately, this tool could help give potential owners transparency and peace of mind knowing the condition of their used or new EV battery. Typical grading systems of other EV battery diagnostic tools provide a general battery estimate based on make and model, whereas Cox Automotive’s mobile Battery Health tool directly evaluates each car and provides VIN-specific information, which is vital in capturing accurate information around the health of the battery. The tool in development will be easy-to-use and measure current battery condition, historical battery data (times, temperatures and types of charges), and performance, which our patented STEPHANIEVALDEZ-STREATY
MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202328MAINTENANCEhealth algorithm then uses to produce a VIN-specific battery score ranging from 1 to 5 or potentially 0 to 100. Cox Automotive is planning to launch a pilot of our new EV battery health tool at 10 Manheim auction locations across the US. While dealers are an obvious future target for the easy-to-use EV battery health mobile app and Bluetooth™ dongle, the opportunities for application are endless, including service centers, fleet operators, and consumers. We are working across the organization on our plans for where to go next. Yes, certainly. With internal combustion engine vehicles, mileage is king, but in the EV world, battery health is the metric. We see this tool being used to help manage the life cycle of EV batteries with real-time condition reports to monitor EV battery health and inform vehicle service needs. Our small data sample of battery health metrics collected from vehicles tested at Manheim confirmed that mileage is less relevant with EVs. There was an inconsistent correlation between a battery health score and mileage on the vehicle’s odometer. This opens more purchasing opportunities for fleet operators thinking about making the switch from vehicles powered by an internal combustion engine to electric vehicles, so long as a battery health check is performed to ensure the battery is in good condition. We’re not just thinking about the battery component of electrification, but the whole vehicle. Vehicles are now platforms for connected software, and Cox Automotive is leading our clients through this evolution. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202330MAINTENANCEProtect Your Fleet From Showers this SpringINSPECT VEHICLES AND EMPLOY PROTECTIVE ACCESSORIESBy Mikayla KyleNo matter the type of fleet, be it electric, alternative fuel, gas powered, or diesel powered, taking care of a work truck is crucial, especially in the rainy spring months. With spring quickly approaching, it’s time to take a look at fleet vehicles and consider some maintenance that may need to be done. Not sure what to check? Don’t worry. See the list of parts and accessories to check before hitting the road.VEHICLE COMPONENTSTires are the most important part of the vehicle to check before the rainy months come. Making sure tires have enough tread on them is especially important for the safety of the operator and others on the road. Give tires a quick inspection, and make sure they are in good condition. Be sure to check the tread, air pressure, alignment, and balance of tires. Also remember to always have a spare on hand for unexpected blowouts or flats.Brakes are one of the most important parts of the vehicle, and having them regularly maintained is extremely important. With the roads getting sleek in the spring months, brakes must work perfectly. Whether using air brakes, drum brakes, or disc brakes, it is important to inspect them before the spring rainfall begins. Nothing is more important than driver safety and the safety of those around the driver, so be sure to inspect brakes sooner rather than later. While this seems like an obvious part to check, it often goes unnoticed. After driving around in the winter, windshield wipers take a beating from the snow and ice. It is best to check wipers by splashing some water on the windshield and making sure they are in good shape by not leaving streaks. Having new wipers assures a driver has clear visibility when traveling. Also, be sure the windshield wiper fluid reservoir is filled so that drivers are not left with a dirty windshield when driving.Checking the vehicle battery to ensure it has the right charge can save a driver from being stuck on the side of the road this spring. The cold months can take a toll on the battery, so checking or replacing the battery can save a headache down the line. A simple battery testing can show if it’s necessary to replace the battery and help avoid lost productivity from a dead battery.Wipers aren’t the only components that take a beating during the winter. Winter weather also takes a toll on the suspension due to the the snow, ice, and salt. Inspect the suspension before the spring to ensure there
APRIL 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 31are no damages or leaks. A failing suspension leads to a bumpier, less safe ride. With a suspension inspection, fleet managers can avoid misalignments and have a safer and smoother ride.PREVENTIONAfter all vehicle components have been inspected, replaced, and replenished, it’s also a good idea to employ accessories to help keep fleet vehicles in top shape. Buying durable, well-fitted floor mats will help keep the interior of fleet vehicles nice and clean. These mats can be easily removed and washed to clean any dirt that may get tracked into the vehicle. Additionally, having seat covers will also help keep the vehicle interior clean and dry. Seat covers now come in memory foam so when a driver travels long distances, they can experience as much comfort as possible.Purchasing some new mud flaps before the rainy months will not only make a fleet vehicle look more attractive, but it will also protect it from dirt and rocks kicked up onto other drivers and the fleet vehicle itself. Mud flaps can be customized to match the branding of the company or the preferred style of the driver, so have some fun when picking out new mud flaps.Unexpected injuries or basic cuts and burns happen all the time. Therefore, buying a first aid kit to keep in the vehicle should be a priority for all fleet owners and operators. Some items to make sure you have in your first aid kit include gauze pads, a box of Band-Aids, scissors, splints, tweezers, and at least one blanket. Having these items in the vehicle will help when unexpected injuries occur. If the vehicle isn’t equipped with a hands-free communication Bluetooth device, it might be time to have one installed. Having a Bluetooth device in the vehicle helps reduce distracted driving and keeps the driver’s eyes on the road. A Bluetooth device allows the driver to make phone calls, enable GPS, and perform other voice-activated actions—preventing drivers from ever having to look down at their phone. This will help keep fleet drivers and others safe on the road.Having an easily removable cover for the fleet vehicle helps protect the inside of a pickup bed from the rain. These covers can be customized to fit a specific type of pickup truck and have a weather-resistant textured powder coated finish. These covers will ensure that anything in the bed will be protected from the rain this spring. From tools to work supplies, a roll cover ensures protection from the elements. Before the weather gets rainy, be sure to go through the list above and prepare fleet vehicles for the weather ahead. This will not only be beneficial to the fleet, but also other drivers on the road. Let safety be the most important aspect of fleet operations this year, and completely inspect fleet vehicles before hitting the road this spring. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202332TECHNOLOGYRight-sizing can Ensure Safety, Reliability, and Low Costs in theLong TermUSE DATA TO UNDERSTAND AND RIGHT-SIZE A FLEETBy Clinton Strother
APRIL 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 33The US Department of Energy (DOE) has stated that right-sizing a fleet is a management practice that will help vehicle fleet managers build and maintain sustainable and fuel-efficient fleets. It’s important to recognize that right-sizing is not the same as downsizing. Rather, it is a way to assist all levels of management in creating the most efficient fleets. It’s not just about reducing costs but creating a cost-effective fleet for the long term. Doing so now can implement means of significant cost-cutting and ensure reduction of fuel costs and maintenance, lower emissions, and optimized usage. For agencies to do this, they must implement a telematics platform that can provide the most critical information on route inefficiencies, underused vehicles, and over or underpowered units that don’t match the needs of a fleet.UNDERSTAND THE FLEETThe first step in right-sizing a fleet is understanding how the vehicles are used. Part of that means dissecting a few things about the fleet, like whether it has the appropriate number of vehicles, the right type, where they are at any given time, how often they’re used, and the general health of the fleet. But how does one definitively know? Using and understanding data through telematics is the most effective way to recognize these key parts of a fleet.A telematics platform provides all this data by using its ability to identify route inefficiencies, under-used vehicles, and units that don’t align with the needs of a particular fleet. The insights can help managers determine if they have the appropriate number and type of vehicles in their fleet and if they are using them in the best ways possible. It can also help provide complete transparency to know if some assets are sitting idle while others are overused.Telematics gives fleet managers the support they need to accurately identify vehicle downtime and availability while pinpointing the use of each vehicle. Landmark history reports and fleet use data provide necessary information to identify underused vehicles and understand why they have been unused for extended periods—resulting in a better understanding of which assets are needed within the fleet. Managers should run this review regularly and have frequent conversations with drivers about the COMPLETE FASTER OIL CHANGES2
MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202334TECHNOLOGYvehicles they operate. They should also comb through other specific telematics data and fleet analytics.RIGHT-SIZING WORKUsing the tools needed to figure out how to right-size a fleet is one thing, but once managers execute right-sizing and see the benefits they reap from it, the payoff comes. The results were staggering in studies that determined precisely how right-sizing a fleet has benefitted companies. After implementing telematics to right-size their fleet, one company saw a 1,500% ROI and saved more than $1 million in fuel costs. The technology was able to determine vehicles and equipment that were left idling unnecessarily for hours on end, which meant they were subsequently creating large amounts of greenhouse gases. All that wear on the engines led to warranty issues. On another note, the company was also experiencing issues with equipment usage. By right-sizing their fleet with the help of telematics technology, they could track the equipment use in a way that helped them improve efficiency and vehicle availability and address other issues that allowed them to operate at peak efficiency.RIGHT-SIZING PAYOFFSIn large agencies with expansive fleets, there is naturally more room for error in oversight, so right-sizing is even more crucial to these agencies. Doing this through the implementation of telematics will prove to benefit the below essential aspects of fleets. There’s no surprise that purchasing vehicles is the highest cost for most fleets. When telematics can assist in getting an agency to be right-sized, they have the data to make the best purchasing decisions as well, and they won’t throw money at an underused or unnecessary vehicle. Right-sizing can help managers decide the best new vehicles to purchase—perhaps something more fuel efficient or even
APRIL 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 35an electric vehicle, which won’t just save them money but will be better for the environment. When a fleet is right-sized, an agency will only spend on fuel and maintenance if necessary. When managers understand how many vehicles they genuinely need, they can use their fleet more effectively and ensure they get a better ROI per vehicle.ONGOING ASSESSMENTMonitoring critical parts of a fleet—its usage, maintenance, and asset location—is crucial to guaranteeing an agency has the appropriate number and types of vehicles in the right place. It is essential to continue operational efficiency, so right-sizing should be a constantly active process. Ultimately, there is better customer service and an enhanced revenue stream when there is the appropriate mix of assets for maximum productivity through right-sizing. It will minimize downtime, ensure the proper assets are available at the right time and in the location needed, lower the cost of fuel and maintenance, reduce emissions, and optimize usage.Implementing technology that can assist in right-sizing a fleet will provide tools to flourish and adjust as needed. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202336SAFETYAn AI-enabled Safety System that KeepsDriver Safety andPrivacy a Top PriorityHOW NAUTO USES COMPUTER VISION TO ENCOURAGE SAFER DRIVING: PART 1According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, car accidents are the number one or number two cause of work-related deaths in every major industry. In 2020, work-related crashes made up 22% of all work-related deaths. Also in 2020, 11% of all work-related deaths involved off-road motoring or pedestrians struck by motor vehicles. In May 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published statistics on distracted driving in the year 2020 and found that 35% of traffic accidents were caused by distracted driving. Statistics aside, we’ve all seen the driver in the lane beside us scrolling or texting on their phone at some point. These statistics and our own observations prove that distracted driving is a major problem for work truck drivers and the public at large. With the current driver shortage only growing, fleets are looking for ways to retain their drivers, and maximizing safety on the road is one aspect they’re looking into. Buying trucks with advanced safety technology and employing telematics, driving logs, cameras, radars, and artificial intelligence (AI), it seems fleets will stop at nothing to keep their drivers safe. Although safety is the reason behind the technology adoption, some drivers might be hesitant to welcome the intrusive technology into their cabs for fear of loss of privacy. After all, who wants Big Brother watching their every move? One company hopes to change the stigma some drivers feel toward AI and cameras by offering a safety technology that still allows drivers to maintain their privacy. That company is Nauto.FEEDBACK FROM AIArtificial intelligence has recently made headlines (thanks, ChatGPT), and it’s brought some members of the public to wonder “Will my boss replace my job with a computer?” “Will computers become smarter than people?” “Will computers take over
APRIL 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 37the world?” It sounds far-fetched, but it’s enough to keep society wary of this new technology barreling toward them. Contrary to the science fiction adaptations of this technology, AI is an incredible, useful technology that can be used in multiple aspects of life to make work easier and make us safer. That’s where Nauto steps in.Nauto began eight years ago with a simple vision: Use AI and computer vision to help the driver rather than replace the driver—after all, in service applications, the driver simply cannot be replaced as they are service technicians, plumbers, electricians, utility workers, and more. Nauto uses a small device that retrofits to the vehicle’s windshield. This device uses computer vision to detect what’s happening on the road and determine risks, including driver distractions. If the device detects a distraction or poor driving behavior, the device will audibly notify the driver with an alert or real-time voice feedback to correct the behavior. Stefan Heck, Nauto founder and CEO, says this alert eliminates about 25% of collisions on its own. This feedback makes drivers aware of the mistakes they’re making or the amount of times they take their attention away from driving. Heck says 80% of drivers drop about 80% of their distractions in just one week after implementing Nauto. Not only do drivers eliminate collisions from their own mistakes, but being more aware also helps them navigate others’ mistakes, eliminating even more potential collisions in the process.VIDEO AS AN OPTIONBecause Nauto uses computer vision and AI to process data in real time inside the vehicle without storing it, drivers won’t feel like they’re being “watched.” However, if a fleet manager wants to capture video, Nauto provides that option. The difference between Nauto’s video capture and other companies’ video capture is that Nauto records only what the fleet manager elects to have recorded. For instance, if a fleet manager decides they only want to see footage of near-misses, close calls, and collisions, then only those events will be recorded and sent to the fleet manager. Fleet managers won’t have to sift through footage of drivers looking down to grab their drink from the cup holder, briefly glancing at their phone to view navigation directions, or other low safety risks. Talk about saving time.In fact, because Nauto has proven to make drivers better, many drivers might also want to have a video recording of collisions. If the collision wasn’t the fault of the driver, the footage can help exonerate them.MAINTAINING PRIVACYAlthough video capture can help drivers in many instances, some drivers could still be hesitant to have a camera facing them the extent of their working day. On the other hand, fleet managers often see the importance of cab transparency. That’s something Nauto has learned to navigate in a way that pleases all parties. “The idea that whether you have the camera recording or whether you have the safety system alerting you and warning you—those are two separate things for us,” Heck explains. Nauto allows drivers to receive alerts without activating video recording.“We want the driver to get feedback and alerts,” Heck says. “Whether or not anything is recorded is an explicit decision.” He says the system starts from recording nothing, and then it’s up to the fleet manager to decide what other events they’d like to see on camera. Even if a fleet manager does elect to capture video for every risk, the system records only about 0.4% of driving time. Heck says that drivers have shared their concerns of being recorded while singing along to the radio or talking to their spouse while driving, but because Nauto only captures event footage, Heck says that unless those actions cause a collision, the drivers maintain their privacy.NEXT MONTHThis article continues in next month’s issue, covering what triggers the system to record and when, how Nauto takes context into account, how the system helps with fleet manager and driver coaching, and additional benefits of the Nauto system.FOR MORE INFORMATIONLook for the second part of this Find out more about Nauto, visit www.nauto.com.

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202342PRODUCTS AND SERVICESFounded in 1988, BOSS Industries is a leader in PTO driven rotary screw compressors, engine driven rotary screw compressors, hydraulically driven rotary screw compressors, along with a wide selection of rotary screw airends for OEM applications. BOSS Industries offers a range of piston air compressors, as well. BOSS compressors are ideal for the utility truck and service truck industry. BOSS is also an innovator, and it recently introduced its newest innovation. The mechanics and tire professionals asked for it, and BOSS built it! The BA870 is built upon the legacy of the industry leading BOSS BA440.The BOSS BA440 sets the standard when it comes to hydraulic driven piston air compressors for the 40 cfm market. The reasons are plentiful. First, it's lightweight—in fact it's over 200-lbs lighter than its nearest competitor. At the heart of the system is an aluminum, single stage, V4, pressure and splash lubricated reciprocating air compressor. Fully assembled in the US, the aluminum compressor assembly offers lighter weight and higher thermal efficiency than cast iron compressor assemblies like everyone else uses. The BA440 includes an internal oil pump for increased lubrication over that of splash lubrication only compressors. It only makes sense, BOSS states that if the company wanted to build an air compressor for the 70 cfm marketplace that it would start with the BA440. But does BOSS just make it bigger or start from scratch? If a V4 style pump works great for 40 cfm, how would a V8 style pump work for 70 cfm? Instead of re-inventing the wheel, BOSS decided upon two V4 airends mounted inline and driven off the same hydraulic pump to produce a comfortable 70 cfm. Would this work? No one has tried this before on a piston air compressor.During initial testing, everything BOSS was concerned about was either a non-issue or a benefit. For example, if one airend goes down, the other end still produces half the volume—Bonus! The efficiencies of BOSS airends and the heat rejection was fantastic during testing. Next was packaging. How much taller, wider, and length would the final canopy packaging be? Would it be too big for the side packs or too tall for cranes? Once again, BOSS’ concerns were for naught. Measuring 36.5-inches long, 20.5-inches in height, and only 20.75-inches wide, BOSS was right where it needed to be. And once again, BOSS’ product is lighter than the nearest competitor by almost 100 lbs. Never has a hydraulic-driven piston air compressor been so light and produce so much air.Once again BOSS has redefined the hydraulic driven piston air compressor market. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202352PRODUCTS AND SERVICESWhen you don’t have the right equipment for the job, downtime is sure to follow. And if projects go sideways, you’ll need to re-spec everything—costing revenue and pushing back timelines. All because you didn’t have what you needed to get the job done. Since 1952, Venco Venturo® has been a leader in developing a line of service cranes, hoists, truck bodies, and accessories all made in the USA. The Cincinnati-based company prides itself on its history of providing durable equipment to handle any job with excellent customer service and the fastest lead times in the industry. A commitment to understanding customers’ needs and then getting them the equipment to match the application has helped Venturo maintain its pioneering position. When construction and maintenance companies don’t get the right components for their fleets, they’re forced to spend, re-measure, and spend again. Understanding this trap, Venturo is dedicated to two principles:1. Deliver only what is needed. 2. Provide unmatched customer support and service.“We understand what goes into finding work-ready truck and crane equipment,” Ian Lahmer, Venco Venturo director of marketing and West Coast sales manager, says. “If you don’t get what you need, you’ll have to re-measure everything and swap features as you go. That’s why we work directly with each customer to install the equipment they need so they can get back to the job. Simple as that.” Venturo also provides application-specific components with custom options. A prime example is the HT45KX service crane. This fully hydraulic crane has less weight for added versatility and more crane capacity with a lighter payload. It is designed to work with all service body manufacturers and includes the following:• Hexagonal boom structure and crane housing• 7,800-lb lifting capacity• 45,600 ft/lb rating• 30-ft reachThe highlight of the crane is the Venturo Logic Controls (VLC™) management system. VLC™ contains a wireless, pistol-grip remote. It gives operators ease of use (and peace of mind) with safety alerts and statuses on the LCD screen. The crane itself contains its own safety feature with alert lights on the underside of the boom, which go from green to yellow to red to indicate different safety warnings. In addition to standard product lines, Venturo’s equipment services round out a complete customer experience. For installations, modifications, or custom builds, Venturo has it covered. These capabilities have been keeping operations in several industries running smoothly for decades. In effect, Venturo either has it—or will build it. Venturo’s VTEC Center is a custom upfit shop staffed by factory-trained technicians. They can build and install cranes and hoists on existing fleets or perform a range of custom work for a complete, work-ready package. “We’re happy to do custom builds,” Lahmer says. “That’s where the VTEC Center comes in. Whether you need a new crane, a full work truck, or even if you aren’t sure where to begin, it doesn’t matter. We’ll customize the truck package for any job.”To ensure the right components, Venturo put a user-friendly system in place.“We designed a simple checklist,” Lahmer explains. “All a customer needs to do is fill out the crane and truck specs they need: size, weight, operational requirements, and the accessories they want. Then we’ll handle the rest.”Venturo equipment is purpose-built to help operators improve productivity and safety at any jobsite. From basic upfits to complete packages, Venturo’s light and heavy-duty cranes, hoists, and truck bodies are ready to handle whatever the job demands.Find out more, visit www.venturo.com.The Tools for Any TradeVENTURO DELIVERS 70 YEARS OF WORK-READY RELIABILITY

APRIL 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 55Keeping the interior of work trucks clean is an arduous and sometimes impossible task. Off-road and abusive environments can wreak havoc on cab floors, costing companies money when it comes time to sell their own trucks or return leased trucks.Nobody wants damage to the interior of the cab, yet in-cab corrosion is one of the costliest issues facing companies that run garbage haulers, cement mixers, or bucket trucks—just to name a few applications—because drivers constantly enter and exit the cab due to the very nature of the work.Since harmful elements enter the cab unavoidably and spills originating on the inside do happen, prevention and cleaning are key.One solution that helps accomplish both is custom molded, tray-style floor mats. The raised edge prevents damaging chemicals, accidental spills, and the usual dirt and grime from escaping the mats, which are easily removed to make the cleaning process significantly shorter. Clean the mats with a simple hose or pressure washer, and leave them to dry. Shortly after, the mats can be reinserted to make the cab floor look new again.Custom molded, tray-style floor mats are perfect for work trucks. Keep your trucks clean and nice with this no-brainer accessory that adds real value to the truck. Improve resale value and create cleaner/safer working conditions throughout the life of the truck.Minimizer offers custom molded floor mats for more than 70 Class 5, 6, 7, and 8 trucks. APRIL 2023 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 61TThe pandemic left a lingering impact on the economy. In the work truck and equipment industry, specifically, “the two driving factors that we hear are the current supply chain disruptions and the workforce shortages,” says AEM’s Senior Vice President of Government and Industry Relations Kip Eideberg at a recent Equipment Market Outlook Webinar.INDUSTRY IMPACTSMany industries have seen ongoing challenges of high interest rates, but it’s the high interest rates coupled with energy and material prices that have slowed the construction industry. However, it’s predicted these issues will begin to improve. Listed are some of the key points from AEM’s Q1 webinar regarding what the industry will face in 2023, according to presenter Danny Richards, lead economist, construction, at Global Data. WHAT'S AHEAD• 2023. Interest rates remain high and could continue to rise before falling again; however inflation must fall before we see lower interest rates. Energy and construction material prices also remain high.• Investment in infrastructure will continue to force growth, especially as the Investment Infrastructure and Jobs Act in the US gathers momentum. Renewable energy projects remain a key investment focus, boosting construction activity in energy and utilities.• The US was one of the few markets to register positive growth in 2020 and 2021. However, with inflationary pressure and a slowing residential sector, output dropped in 2022. Despite the residential market decline, non-residential sectors have seen improvement. According to survey results, many equipment manufacturers are hopeful for eventual resolutions to these ongoing issues plaguing the industry.STAY INFORMEDAEM holds webinars on a quarterly basis.
