Fullbay gives you easy reporting that surfaces any inefficiencies so they can be resolved quickly. On the technician side, transparency into things like efficiency or utilization can create a tighter level of trust within the business. Techs can see exactly how they’re performing and how their peers are doing without guessing about where they stand.Lastly, for customers, transparency can make the difference between whether they do business with you or the shop across the street. Understanding exactly what’s going on with their units, how long a repair will take, what the cost will be, when the next PM is due, and other vital details can create a strong relationship that will lead to more business.MWS: HOW DOES FULLBAY’S MOBILE SERVICE WORK AND WHAT KINDS OF VEHICLES/CUSTOMERS ARE ABLE TO RECEIVE THOSE BENEFITS?FINDLAY: The Fullbay software works on any device with an internet connection—whether it’s a brick and mortar shop or a mobile truck on the side of the road. Many of our customers are mobile-only businesses or shops that have a mobile arm, and Fullbay provides the same benefits no matter where the work is done. The types of equipment can vary greatly, but Fullbay was designed with heavy-duty in mind. Rather than try to create a one-size-fits-all platform, we’re committed to a purpose-built shop management system that serves this essential workforce. Too often we found other tools lacked the right setup for a heavy-duty operation or included irrelevant features, so we’ve built Fullbay to be the best solution for this market.MWS: ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS?FINDLAY: When we launched Fullbay, we set out to not just build software, but also create a community for the heavy-duty repair industry. We’re fortunate to be able to help these businesses run a more efficient and profitable operation each and every day. On top of that, we support the community via our Fullbay Cares initiative by donating to charitable organizations that are near and dear to the hearts of our customers.FOR MORE INFORMATION trade, he graduated with a bachelor's and master's degrees out more, visit www.fullbay.com.

APRIL 2021 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 17702-HP WORTH OF LIGHT-DUTY PICKUP By Jade BrasherRam 1500 TRX Review
MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202118LIGHT-DUTY WORKTRUCK SHOWCASEWhen you can’t wait to open the door and pull yourself up onto the seat with the grab handle; when your heart starts racing after you buckle in the driver’s seat, and when your adrenaline kicks in at the push of the “Start” button, that’s when you know you’re in for something special.A pickup from Ram that offers 702 hp simply refuses to be categorized as “your daddy’s truck,” and dare I say it adds a completely new dimension to light-duty pickups altogether? I’m talking about none other than the Ram 1500 TRX. This is the truck you’ve heard all the motorheads talk about that features the Dodge Hellcat engine and goes from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds (yes, a pickup truck). And that’s not even the beginning.POWER OF RAMAs stated earlier, the Ram 1500 TRX features the Dodge Hellcat engine. The engine is popular in the brand’s muscle cars—the Challenger and Charger. Certain models of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango have also seen a Hellcat engine, but the Ram TRX is by far the largest vehicle with a Hellcat under its hood.Ram touts this particular truck as being the “most powerful production street-legal half-ton pickup” ever built. I don’t know about all that, but I do know
APRIL 2021 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 19I could feel the power beneath me as I was driving it. The 6.2-L Supercharged HEMI V8 SRT engine gave this truck a whopping 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, and the 8-speed automatic 8HP95 transmission it was paired with really did allow the truck to go from 0 to 60 in around 4.5 seconds. I could keep up with certain sports cars with ease as we were coming off a traffic light. The surprised look on other drivers’ faces still makes me laugh. And that take-off was without using the truck’s Launch Control with Launch Assist. This feature regulates RPM and monitors wheel slip feedback to give the fastest acceleration rate.As for work truck aspects, we do get a trailer brake controller in the TRX, and a Trailer Reverse Steering Control system is available. There are multiple power ports for phones, tablets, and laptops. The center console is also quite spacious with the capacity to hold devices as well.TRX INTERIORIt’s safe to say I’ve been around and inside a few trucks. And it seems for many models, what used to be known as a cut-and-dry workhorse has become a luxury vehicle on a pickup platform. Many models have certainly embraced a more techy and—yes, I’ll say it—fancier interior. The Ram TRX follows suit, just as one might expect from a truck of this caliber.
The driver and passenger in the front seat will rest their bottoms on performance-bolstered front seats that are designed to keep you in place when traveling off-road or at high speeds. The interior of the Ram 1500 TRX also features premium materials such as refined leather and brushed metal as well as suede and carbon fiber.A prominent aspect of Ram trucks’ interiors is the foot-long infotainment screen. This screen can be divided multiple ways to display what matters to you most, whether that’s your music, climate control, navigation system, or Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. In the TRX, the infotainment screen features performance and off-road pages to keep you informed of how your truck is handling. And speaking of performance, there is a transfer case switch bank located just below and to the left of the infotainment screen. This bank is exclusive to the TRX and allows easy access for driving modes and launch control.OFF THE BEATEN PATHI’m not sure the exact intent behind the design of this truck, but I would guess that because of its multiple terrain driving modes, its beefy shocks, and its launch mode, that it’s meant to tackle any terrain at crazy high speeds. That’s good news for fleet owners who often travel to remote worksites and want to look good and feel good doing it.Let’s begin exploring the Ram 1500 TRX’s off-road capabilities with a few numbers. The truck features a ground clearance of 11.8 inches. That’s almost a foot of clearance to tread boulders and ford through streams. You’ll experience 13 inches of front suspension MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202120
APRIL 2021 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 21travel before the suspension is fully compressed. And finally, the rear suspension will travel 14 inches before it is fully compressed. That’s a lot of smooth movement for a pickup.Speaking of smooth, Ram equipped the TRX with Bilstein Black Hawk e2 shocks. These bad boys give the TRX one of the smoothest rides I’ve experienced in a pickup—seriously. These Bilstein shocks feature dual-valve technology, high-pressure stainless steel braided hoses, remote reservoirs, and ZoneControl jounce cut off that engage a secondary piston to prevent bottoming out as the shock absorbers approach full compression after a hard landing.Additionally, when in off-road modes, a performance page found on the infotainment display shows Vehicle Dynamics to allow the driver to hone in on the best steering angle, lock axles, or modulate transfer case gearing.GO ANYWHEREI have to admit, I liked driving this truck. I liked the sound it made when I pushed the ignition button. I liked the way I felt when I was walking toward it in a parking lot. I liked having heads turn my way as I drove down the street. And I very much appreciated its handling and the quality of ride. One thing I wasn’t happy about: the fuel economy. It’s estimated to receive 10 mpg in the city and 14 on the highway, but I’m not sure I ever got up to 9 mpg the whole time I had it. Although I didn’t drive many highway miles, and I sure enjoyed rolling hot off the line at traffic lights—which very likely impacted the fuel economy. With the fuel economy and the price tag in mind, this truck might not be best suited for work truck applications—but that isn’t because the truck isn’t capable. With what Ram put on this 1500 TRX, I believe you could travel just about anywhere.ABOUT THE AUTHORJade Brasher is the editor of Modern WorkTruck Soluons magazine. A graduate of
MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202122MAINTENANCEEfficient, Cost-effective Oil Removal from WastewaterKNOCK OUT HIGH INITIAL CONCENTRATIONS OF OIL FROM WASH WATER AT TANK WASH FACILITIES: PART 1 By Del Williams
In the transportation industry, regulations require tank trucks that haul food-grade oils to be thoroughly washed out between loads before any new product is introduced. Facilities that clean these tank trucks produce oily water from a combination of the wash water infused with the oil residue clinging to the inside of the tank. This oily wash water must be disposed of properly. So to comply with the various local, state, and federal EPA requirements in this regard, facilities that clean tank trucks must find cost-effective water treatment solutions involving oil and water separation equipment to remove the residual oil in wash water before it is discharged into the sewer and sent to a municipal facility. Failing such regulatory compliance can be costly. If the water contains too much residual oil after treatment, municipal water treatment centers can refuse to accept it and levy hefty surcharges and fines. There are other economic benefits to recovering and handling waste oil properly. Once separated from the wash water, the residual vegetable waste oils can be sold at a profit to companies making biofuels. The process of separating residual vegetable oils from tank truck wash water poses a number of challenges, and the oil water separation process must accommodate a long list of variables. Every tank truck wash facility is different in many respects. The number of trucks that need to be washed, the cycle time of the wash, the type of washing equipment used, truck sizes, types of oils hauled, oil/water ratios, peak periods of use, changing flow rates, environmental conditions, and facility size and layout can all vary greatly from site to site. In addition, these facilities operate in different locations with differing local and state regulatory requirements. RESIDUAL OIL REMOVALTo make matters more challenging, certain types of vegetable oils will solidify at room temperature. These include oils that are naturally more highly saturated, such as coconut oil, and other types of vegetable oils that are “hydrogenated” by man-made processes (e.g., palm, soy, canola oil). These types of hydrogenated oils can be particularly difficult to remove from wash water because they require relatively high temperatures during the wash cycle to become and remain liquid. In the tank wash process, the proportion of wash water to oil can also vary during the washing cycles, thus putting a sometimes high and variable demand on the oil water separation equipment that follows. “Typically, a number of factors influence the ultimate design of an efficient oil removal system, including flow rate, concentration of oil in the mix, specific gravity of the oil to be removed, and temperature, among others,” according to Jim Petrucci, vice president at Oil Skimmers, Inc., a Cleveland, Ohio-based manufacturer specializing in separating and recovering all types of waste oils, greases, and fats from water. To accommodate all these variables and efficiently remove oil from the wash water, the application should be analyzed by professionals so that the oil separation and removal equipment can be properly matched to the requirements of the application. Ideally, oil removal systems should cost-effectively, continuously, and actively remove food-grade oil no matter the levels of oil concentration, flow rate, or temperature of the wash water with minimal maintenance and direct supervision. Fortunately, such systems exist today and are growing in popularity.OIL SKIMMERS At some tank truck wash facilities there are pits or sumps where oily wash water collects and oil separates naturally and floats to the surface. In this scenario, an oil skimmer should be used to remove the floating oil from the surface of the water. There are a variety of oil skimmers that can be applied to this task. Some use passive oil removal methods such as slotted pipes or overflow weirs. The problem with these methods is they can be APRIL 2021 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 23 The Model 5H Brill® tube-type oil skimmer mounts directly on the edge of the main wastewater holding tank. The Free-Floating Collector Tube actively and continuously removes the oil and grease as it rises to the surface of the water.
MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202124MAINTENANCElabor intensive and require regular monitoring, maintenance, and manual adjustment to perform sufficiently. If they are not maintained and adjusted to meet the flow, they can either take too much fluid—resulting in too much water along with the waste oil—or they can take too little oil relative to the flow—becoming easily overwhelmed with oil and grease—permitting an oil layer to form on the surface of the water. Oil buildup can lead to bacteria growth, creating odors and health risks and bogging down the effectiveness of the separation process. These passive skimming devices are primary causes of excessive maintenance requirements and poor performance issues in oil water separation situations. An efficient and effective way to remove the oil after oil and water separation is with an oil skimmer that uses a Free-Floating Collector Tube™. Tube-type oil skimmers actively and continuously remove oil 24/7 as it rises to the surface of the water. As the tube moves across the surface, oil adheres to the outside, then the tube travels through a series of ceramic scrapers that remove the oil. The recovered oil drains into a collection vessel. Tube skimmers are not affected by water level fluctuation or floating debris and solids, remove very little water in the process, and operate continuously with minimal attention or maintenance.IN THE FIELDOne successful example of oil skimmer in use involves a Midwest-based trucking company with a fleet of over 200 tanker trucks—many used to haul soybean oil. The trucking company cleans its trucks after each job. Each tanker hauls approximately 48,000 lbs of oil, so a material amount of residual oil clings to the inside of the tank and mixes with water during the wash cycle.Local regulations require the company to remove all residual oil from the wash water before discharging it into the sewer system. When the trucking company assessed its existing oil removal process, it found glaring inefficiencies. To clean out the tankers, the maintenance crew sprayed water into the trailers and emptied the oil-infused wash water into holding tanks where the crew had to manually skim the oil from the surface of the wastewater. This practice met local wastewater regulations but was inefficient and labor intensive. As a result, the company’s operations manager sought a more efficient and cost-effective method to remove oil from the wastewater before it was treated further in the company’s existing dissolved air flotation (DAF) unit. The company decided to install a Model 5H Brill® tube-type oil skimmer, mounting it directly on the edge of its main wastewater holding tank. Subsequent to the installation of the tube-type oil skimmer from Oil Skimmers, Inc., the trucking company no longer needed to manually collect sludge from the wastewater, delivering substantial labor savings. The company notes that the oil skimmer is so effective it enhances the performance of its DAF unit and reduces the amount of flocking agent required, further reducing costs.According to the company’s operations manager, the oil skimmer saved enough time and money to more than pay for its cost within a few weeks, while helping the company easily meet wastewater requirements.NEXT TIMEBe sure to check out next month’s issue for part two, discussing oil water separators for more difficult applications when the waste oil does not have the time or the space to rise naturally to the surface of the water.ABOUT THE AUTHOR Del Williams is a technical writer who lives in Torrance, California. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202126SAFETYHow to Create Safer Construction Worksites Amid the COVID-19 PandemicTECHNOLOGY IS KEY FOR UPKEEP, COMPLIANCE, AND ASSET TRACKINGBy Fred Fakkema
APRIL 2021 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 27Equipment and safety managers leverage technology to streamline operations and improve safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of public health guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) responded with new safety and compliance standards for construction industry training programs, evaluations, and reporting. According to the EHS Daily Advisor, the construction industry was among the most frequently cited for violating OSHA workplace safety standards in 2020. During a year when workplace safety was one of the highest priorities of managers and the public alike, equipment and safety managers sought innovative ways to stay up to date on the latest OSHA guidelines to avoid future violations. What has come to light in the last year are three key areas where the construction industry is seeing technology and safety best practices implemented at the worksites and behind the scenes. Many innovative models enable construction teams to safely operate during the pandemic and adhere to OSHA regulations.COLLABORATIONWhile safety managers are responsible for everything that falls under the work area—such as ensuring the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)—the responsibilities that fall under equipment managers differ and are geared more toward equipment use and maintenance. This is why collaboration between these two roles is critical for ensuring compliance and safety. For an example, consider walkaround vehicle inspections and safety briefings. While social distancing guidelines have impacted the number of people recommended at worksites, digital tools for pre-and post-trip inspections, such as Electronic Verified Inspection Reporting (EVIR®), enable greater collaboration between safety and equipment managers through the digitization and verification of activities. EQUIPMENT UPKEEP The pandemic has interrupted typical fleet service schedules and equipment maintenance timelines. Service timing and inspections are critically important to the drivers and operators of work trucks and equipment, and once inspection intervals are off schedule, problems like low fluid can turn into costly issues and repairs. Even malfunctioning lights, if noticed by an OSHA inspector, can lead to a more detailed inspection and therefore downtime and possible fines. The availability of equipment data can also help encourage the safety mindset among construction professionals to execute proper on-site inspections in addition to regularly scheduled maintenance by service teams. ASSET USEAsset use is another area that has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. While OSHA guidelines encouraged construction fleets to adopt staggered work schedules to reduce the total number of employees on the worksite, some projects were put on hold. Paused projects released numerous pieces of equipment and vehicles for use at other projects/worksites, rather than sitting idle. Perhaps one positive outcome from trimming back the workforce at one site was the ability for site and equipment managers to identify freed up equipment in real time and redirect people and resources to new projects—streamlining the efficiency of their fleets. Asset tracking can also protect against theft, which construction fleets and worksites are prone to. Historically, property crime has increased after a recession and with more sites abandoned or put on pause during the pandemic, ill-intentioned passersby have found the pandemic another opportunity to target jobsites and the theft of high-value equipment. Asset tracking equipped with cellular and GPS communication can locate equipment immediately, or its location pings can provide law enforcement assistance in the recovery of stolen worksite assets. WORKPLACE COMPLIANCE By ensuring compliance with OSHA guidelines, regulations, and standards, the benefits for fleets are two-fold. First, when fleets are compliant with worksite and OSHA regulations, a greater sense of safety exists. Second, ensuring compliance also holds the benefit of proper equipment upkeep. By ensuring proper pre- and post-trip inspections through EVIR, construction fleets are tied into maintenance software and real-time alerts of malfunctioning equipment are flagged. This saves time and erroneous trips to the worksite, lowering the risk for potential exposure to COVID-19. It is also important to keep in mind that every state may have its own OSHA inspection standards, so managers of construction fleets must ensure their vehicles are in compliance with standards that vary between local jurisdictions for completing Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and worksite safety briefings.ABOUT THE AUTHORFred Fakkema is the vice president of safety and compliance at Zonar. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202128SAFETYDisrupted sleep can impair a professional truck driver’s cognitive function and cause increased daytime sleepiness, leading to more truck driving accidents and unsafe roads. Estimates show that drowsy driving is responsible for 72,000 crashes, 44,000 injuries, and 800 deaths, although these numbers are underestimated, with up to 6,000 fatal crashes each year possibly caused by drowsy drivers. According to the Department of Transportation, many accidents and mistakes happen due to fatigue and untreated sleep disorders. More than one-third of truck drivers have sleep apnea—a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts—and many do not know it. Professional drivers with insomnia and sleep apnea are affected during working hours in terms of function and focus. Sleep can also be interrupted by snoring and inability to breathe through the nose.According to Smart Trucking, sleep disorders are common among commercial truck drivers due to lack of regular exercise, cramped workspace, inhalation of diesel fuel and other chemicals, lack of access to nutritionally balanced food, and excessive stress. This leads to drivers facing greater health issues and shorter life spans than people in other careers.Today’s professional truck drivers and fleet owners need health strategies that will enable drivers to sustain career productivity, stay safe on the roads, and help mitigate the trucking industry’s employee shortfall—a shortage that could reach over 160,000 by 2028. Fortunately, an innovative medical device hitting the market, nasal airway stents, offers a non-surgical and effective treatment to effectively support the upper airway passage and allow for better airflow, easier breathing, and improved sleep. Steering Toward Better Sleep HealthMEDICAL DEVICE HELPS TRUCK DRIVERS OVERCOME SLEEP DISORDERS, ENHANCE SAFETY AND PRODUCTIVITY By Jon Slaughter and Terry Bayliss
APRIL 2021 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 29DISRUPTED SLEEP One study designed to measure the prevalence and impact of insomnia on motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) and near-miss accidents (NMAs) found that insomnia affected 27.5% of the drivers sampled. Compared to other drivers, in the three years prior to the study, professional truck drivers with insomnia reported a significantly higher number of MVAs; they also reported a greater number of NMAs in the previous six months.A report from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) showed that over 28% of truck drivers have sleep apnea. While these drivers are still qualified to work, the FMCSA recommends that they seek medical attention to determine fitness to operate a motor vehicle. For better sleep, nasal breathing is important because it filters, warms, and humidifies inhaled air, protects the lungs, leads to better oxygen supply to the body, prevents cold, flu, allergic reaction, hay fever, and irritable coughing, stimulates the calming nervous system, and reduces snoring and sleep apnea. SLEEP APNEAThe most common symptoms of sleep apnea include loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, waking with a dry mouth, morning headache, insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty paying attention, and irritability. An estimated 45% of adults snore occasionally and 25% snore regularly. Treatments include oral appliances, surgery, or a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine—comprising an air pump and hose worn at night. While these devices reduce breathing disruptions, they require electricity and an intensive cleaning routine to prevent mold growth. They can also be uncomfortable and inconvenient for drivers on the road. While not all snoring is a sign of sleep apnea, sleep disorders have become a significant health issue in the United States, with 22 million Americans living with sleep apnea and 80% of moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) going undiagnosed.OSA OSA occurs when the muscles that support the soft tissues in the throat, such as the tongue and soft palate, temporarily relax narrowing or closing airways and momentarily cut off breathing. OSA represents a large number of cases that when left untreated can lead to high blood pressure, chronic heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems. This disorder is also associated with Type 2 diabetes and depression and is a factor in a high number of traffic accidents due to persistent drowsiness.AIRWAY STENTSAn airway stent is a medical device that can be inserted by the patient into the nose and throat at night and removed in the morning—comparable to the ease of wearing contact lenses. It also complements traditional treatments, such as CPAP machines. Because airway stents improve nasal breathing, they are also effective for mitigating symptoms of chronic sinusitis. When selecting airway stents, it’s important to look for those that are made of nitinol, a nickel-titanium alloy that has super-elastic characteristics. The stents should also be FDA-approved and clinically proven to support the upper airway passage to allow for better airflow and easier breathing, improve nasal breathing, and enhance sleep and physical performance. The device must also have been clinically tested for treatment of patients struggling with OSA and snoring and designed to support healthy, natural, nasal breathing at night and during the day. A healthy commercial truck driver who is well rested is more efficient and, in conjunction with a fleet sleep program, could reduce insurance premiums.By embracing innovative medical devices like airway nasal stents, commercial truck drivers and fleet owners can treat OSA and other sleep disorders to mitigate their negative impact, enhance breathing and job performance, and improve general health and well-being.ABOUT THE AUTHORSJon Slaughter is the CEO of Healthy Trucking of America. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202130TECHNOLOGYFor vocational fleets, the types of vehicles driven, the cargo hauled, and the distance traveled oftentimes translate to an exemption to complying with Hours of Service (HOS) rules. But there are many scenarios where work truck fleets must be mindful of HOS, and if you fall into this bucket, there are updates to the regulations and new technologies available in 2021 that can help you navigate the rules. Most fleets know that the Hours of Service (HoS) rules must be followed and met so that the organization stays compliant. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) came up with the Hours of Service rules to improve commercial vehicle safety on our nation's highways. The Hours of Service regulations help ensure overall road safety by governing the number of hours truck drivers can drive. The rules dictate the maximum number of hours that operators can drive within a specific timeframe, provide details on mandatory break and rest times, and control duty cycles. The Hours of Service regulations target most long-haul trucking companies with detailed restrictions for truck drivers. Specifically, the rules state that drivers may be on duty for up to 14 hours following 10 hours off duty, but they are limited to 11 hours of driving time. Plus, after driving for 8 hours, the driver must take a 30-minute break. But what about day-use, vocational truckers? Do the Hours of Service rules apply to them? Yes, HoS rules apply to day-use vocational truckers in certain situations. Are you transporting construction equipment? Using work trucks heavier than 10,000 lbs? Traveling more than 150 miles away from home base? Carrying hazardous cargo? Then keep reading.DAILY MILEAGEVocational fleets should pay attention to HOS rules governing “short haul.” Short-haul is classified as operators that drive only within a 150-air-mile radius, do not drive more than 11 hours at a time, and are entirely off-duty within 14 hours of the start of the workday. A new non-CDL short-haul exception for 2021 allows drivers to extend the 14-hour limit to 16 hours on two days in a consecutive seven-day period or after a 34-hour reset. Short-haul drivers are subject to the limit of not driving more than 150 air miles from their home base and returning to that home base after driving for a day or 14 hours. The new '150 air mile' rule exempts a driver with a commercial driver's license from completing a daily log and having supporting documents. Still, carriers who employ these drivers must Hours of Service Rules Can Affect Day-use TruckingMAKE SURE YOUR FLEET IS COMPLIANT By Ryan Camachoheavy-duty feature
APRIL 2021 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 31maintain records of drivers’ hours and duty times. Sometimes drivers exceed their short-haul limits. When this happens, truck drivers must maintain a Record of Duty Status (RODS), a driver's log of daily miles driven, including the 24-hour period starting time, contact information and carrier data, and duty status. If the truck driver completes a RODS more often than eight days in 30 days, you will need to implement an ELD to prove your mileage and hours of service and avoid non-compliance. Many short-haul fleets have installed Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) to ensure they do not violate any hours of service restrictions. ELDsELDs automatically record the distance covered, making it easier to calculate air-miles. Integrating your ELDs with a transportation management system (TMS) will give you visibility into how close you are to your mileage limit so you do not exceed the limit. Tracking trucks through an ELD or telematics system provides visibility into driver logs, driver performance, and navigation, increasing delivery efficiencies and customer satisfaction. The number of miles driven is a significant factor in how truckers calculate profits. If you cross state lines, you are subject to IFTA taxes. IFTA is an agreement between all the US states except Alaska and Hawaii and most of the provinces/territories of Canada. This agreement establishes the concept of one fuel use license and one administering base jurisdiction for each licensee. The licensee's base jurisdiction will be the administrator of this agreement and execute all the licensee provisions. These taxes can add to your profitability equation, so depending on how far you drive and if you cross state lines, your load might not be as profitable as you think. LOAD WEIGHTIf your load is over 10,000 lbs—including the truck itself—you will be subject to the Hours of Service regulations. A load of this size is also governed by Department of Transportation (DOT) heavy-haul regulations and limitations. Each state defines the maximum weight that can be legally transported across its bridges and roadways. If your truck exceeds the maximum weight of a bridge or road that you had planned to use, you will need to find another route, which can lead to more mileage and more time on the road. According to the DOT, if a truck used for business has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 lbs or more, what hours-of-service limits apply?• The driver may drive up to 11 hours after having 10 consecutive hours off duty.• The driver must go off-duty after 14 hours, after having 10 consecutive hours off duty (all-time counts against this 14-hour limit).• For a company that has vehicles operating every day, the driver may not exceed a total of 70 hours on-duty time in the current eight-day period. For a company that does not operate every day, the limit is 60 hours on duty in the current seven-day period.• Drivers using time records may drive up to 11 hours if they return to their work reporting location within 12 hours.CONTENTS OF LOADWhether you are a short-haul driver or a long-haul trucker, you are subject to FMCSA regulations and the Hazardous Materials Transportation Uniform Safety Act (HMTUSA). Carriers, including owner-operators, must be hazmat (Hazardous Materials) certified. Truckers should carry proof of operating authority, permits, safety rating, and years of experience. Operators must ensure that packages are correctly marked and labeled and free of damage and leaks. Packages must be secured to reduce movement in transport, and documentation must be compliant. There is a distinct advantage of short-haul trucking jobs, such as driving shorter routes and returning home more often. Even if you are a short-haul carrier, you can benefit from using a transportation management system (TMS). Many of them are free of charge for use, so they are affordable. A TMS can monitor the number of hours and miles a trucker has driven to stay compliant with HoS rules.ABOUT THE AUTHORRyan Camacho is the director of strategy and business development at Axele. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202132TECHNOLOGYEfficient Distribution of Efficient Distribution of the COVID-19 Vaccinethe COVID-19 VaccineNAVIGATE THE ‘COLD CHAIN’ WITH TELEMATICS by Carlos Caponeramedium-duty feature
APRIL 2021 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 33One thing authorities are learning with the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine is that data matters. Since the first vials of this medical breakthrough left their factories on highly specialized refrigerated trucks in December last year, there have been numerous reports of seemingly avoidable mistakes. From a miscommunication between logistics officials and the US Food and Drug Administration that left 14 states with vaccine shortfalls to reports of vaccine shipments going to waste or spoiling because of poor timing or confusion over protocols, there is a general state of confusion clouding this initial phase of the distribution effort. With the CDC reporting more than 16 million cases and 300,000 deaths in the US throughout 2020, the stakes could not be higher, and these mistakes could be avoided.Part of the solution to this national mobilization is telematics—the data and connectivity of the supply chain as vaccines are transported from the factory to the end recipient. Unlike 2009’s H1N1 vaccines, which had to be maintained at a temperature range of 35 to 46 degrees F, today’s COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer/BioNTech must be kept at a frigid -94 degrees F or it will lose its effectiveness. Each package of 1,000 doses is packed in dry ice and equipped with thermometers that relay critical information to organizers and the team awaiting the supply at an administration site. These individuals are tasked with monitoring the health of the vaccine in transit and ensuring the vaccine maintains stable temperatures during the journey from point A to point B. COLD CHAIN BACKBONEIt’s an example of telematics at its most crucial purpose, and it gets even more complicated. The first COVID-19 vaccines must be administered twice—21 days apart—for each participant to maximize their effectiveness, making timely deliveries all the more critical. More than a billion units must be delivered at precise times and temperatures. Such volume and precision can only be managed with the highest levels of secure information sharing, backed by real-time data and telematics. Supply chains—in this case, it’s known as a “cold chain”—have come a long way since the Spanish flu of a century ago or even more recent medical deployments of rotavirus, pneumococcal, and meningococcal vaccines. Now telematics is the backbone of smart fleet deployments with cameras and sensors in and out of each vehicle communicating with a command center as well as each other. Satellites call in directions. With full transparency, shipments are weighed, and temperatures Telematics systems, like Teletrac Navman TN360, have the ability to track some shipments in greater detail and in real time. A necessary feature when shipping invaluable cargo.
MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202134TECHNOLOGYof the cargo are tabulated—all while important factors such as speed, harsh turning, and braking intensity are measured. These harsh driving behaviors can result in damaged cargo, and this cargo is far too important to allow for these avoidable errors. Everything that can be known is known and relayed to the powers that be. Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), the data collected with each vaccine shipment can become more accurate and predictable with each additional delivery. Due to the nature of the distributions—which are essentially going out to every major market in the nation simultaneously with additional trips for each group of recipients—the data can drive better decisions with each subsequent delivery. Obstacles encountered on each route, such as a dangerous interchange or traffic hot spot, are logged and applied to new calculations, making the journey more efficient each time. PLANNING WITH DATAWith an advanced telematics system, distribution and logistics managers will know when to substitute different trucks, adjust the route, or alert the receiving team at the hospital or vaccination site about a schedule change. It’s the secret ingredient to keeping the distribution running as smoothly as possible.Additionally, telematics systems like fleet and asset management software can inform fleet managers, drivers, and the medical team awaiting the vaccine shipment where the vehicle is on its route and compares its progress to other relevant data sets such as traffic patterns and nearby hazards. Such data can inform those on the receiving end of the cold chain and empower them to plan accordingly with regard to staffing, storage availability, and crowd management. The worst-case scenario with sensitive deliveries like this is when all the effort and data work together through the entire cold chain just to have the shipments spoil at the very end. Unfortunately, so far it’s been a common outcome, but data informed by advanced telematics will go a long way toward avoiding these tragic pitfalls while delivering COVID-19 vaccines to save lives.ABOUT THE AUTHORin 2017. It is the latest addition to Anthony’s popular MTU-GLR lineup of heavy-duty TuckUnders™: The MTU-GLR-XL.XTRA-LARGE PLATFORMSo what makes the XL so exciting? The key is in the model’s “xtra-large” platform.Light but unwieldy cargo like hot tubs, swing sets, appliances, furniture, and construction materials often have a large footprint. While these items may fit easily in the back of a Class 6-8 van, they can prove difficult to offload without a dock or a forklift. Traditionally, most liftgates are well equipped to handle concentrated, heavy loads, but they can leave some to be desired when handling items with a broad footprint, primarily due to limited platform load area.MTU-GLR-XL FEATURESThe new XL boasts an 84-inch-wide by 90-inch-deep platform, made possible with Anthony’s patent-pending Trifold Tuckunder Technology™ (T3). On an Anthony liftgate with T3, the platform is comprised of three folding platform sections instead of the usual two sections generally found on today’s tuck-style liftgates. The result is an increase of over 50% usable load area over the industry’s most common models.Along with the huge aluminum platform, the XL is packed with premium features like standard power down for reliable cycle times in all weather conditions, grease-free bushings to eliminate the need for routine lubrication intervals, and available hot galvanized finish to maximize the longevity of your equipment investment. The XL is designed to fit dock-height trucks and trailers with a maximum load capacity of 4,000 lbs. This is the second liftgate in the Anthony lineup to provide an exceptionally large platform. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202146PRODUCTS AND SERVICESSince 2015, Fullbay has provided heavy-duty repair shop management software to diesel shops around the world. Whether a shop works on semis, agricultural equipment, or something in between, Fullbay can help streamline operations, boost technician productivity, and generally increase revenue.BUILT FOR HEAVY-DUTYCo-founder and CEO Jacob Findlay built Fullbay to address the challenges he saw while working in a repair shop. He realized heavy-duty shops had fallen somewhat behind on the times—where other industries had long ago switched over to apps or software, repair shops were still heavily dependent on paperwork and antiquated tracking systems. Everything took longer than it needed to, and it was entirely too easy to make mistakes or forget to add a part or service to an invoice. He wasn’t just concerned about owners, either; as he worked, he noticed techs bogged down by slow authorizations, lost paperwork, and haphazard parts management. EFFICIENCY IS KEYFullbay is built to make everyone’s lives easier. It lives in the cloud, so it’s accessible anywhere at any time via computer, tablet, or phone. That means there’s no need to spend hours stapled to a desk entering information. You don’t even have to be in the shop to take a peek inside and see what’s going on. Moving everything to the cloud means techs create and add to service orders as they go. The time lost scrawling (and then interpreting) notes is completely eliminated. Techs can clock into and out of jobs, allowing you to see who’s working on what at any given time. When it comes time to settle up, Fullbay automatically converts service orders into invoices. Everything is accounted for, including labor rate and parts markup; click a button and you’re ready to present a customer with an easy-to-read invoice. HAPPY CUSTOMERS, HAPPY SHOPCommunicating with customers is more critical than ever. That’s why Fullbay’s Customer Portal is so innovative. It cuts out time wasted playing phone tag or attempting to get work authorized and provides an open channel for customers to communicate with your shop.Your customers can jump into the Customer Portal and see exactly how their vehicles are doing. They can also authorize work and even issue payment, cutting out all those hours, days, or weeks so many shops spend trying to obtain both. This makes for happy customers, and happy customers are more likely to bring their vehicles back to your shop. They also tend to share your services with their colleagues. And word-of-mouth advertising is priceless. ALL THE SUPPORT YOU NEEDFullbay is committed to providing free, ongoing support to all its shops. Whether you have a question about how something works or a suggestion to improve the app, Fullbay is always listening. When your shop is powered by Fullbay, you have access to a dedicated customer rep and an ever-growing library of educational documents and classes to help you put the app to work for you.Find out more, visit www.fullbay.com.FullbayREPAIR SHOP MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202152PRODUCTS AND SERVICESCell phone safety policies are important to have in place. But how do you know your drivers are following policy? With ORIGOSafeDriver, you can rest assured that your safety policies are being enforced. With the company's proactive cell phone safety solution, not only will you prevent dangerous cell phone use, but you will also improve drivers’ behavior.WHY INVEST IN CELL PHONE SAFETY?Crashes are detrimental to companies. Aside from injuries and fatalities, crashes can have widespread financial impact. The impact goes well beyond the damage to vehicles. Increased insurance premiums, risk of lawsuits, lost productivity due to downtime, and damage to your company’s brand are some examples of costs that affect your bottom line when a crash occurs. On top of the potential loss of life and financial impact, cell phone use is illegal in many states. In fact, 47 states and the District of Columbia have a primary law banning texting while driving, and 24 states have banned all cell phone use while driving.WHY ORIGOSAFEDRIVER?When fleets have the ORIGOSafeDriver solution installed, they are taking a proactive approach to stopping crashes before they happen. By pairing ORIGOSafeDriver’s hardware with the mobile app, the drivers’ screen is disabled when the vehicle is in motion. The screen is unlocked after safe arrival. The system has many customizable features to comply with the fleet company’s policy. For instance, you can either allow or disallow Bluetooth calling. The solution is physically integrated with the Geotab GO Device, and data is transmitted through the hardware instead of the driver’s phone. This is more efficient, accurate, and much less expensive. And it avoids draining the driver’s phone battery and data plan.ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF ORIGOSAFEDRIVER FOR FLEETSRequired compliance—Enforce cell phone policies and know exactly who is driving and what vehicle they are in.Real-time coaching—If the driver attempts to use their phone while in motion, they will receive real-time feedback, and the manager will be alerted.Stolen vehicle alerts—If a vehicle is operated by an unauthorized driver or if it’s being stolen, the manager will receive an SMS alert so they can take appropriate action.Cell Phone Safety Reporting—ORIGOSafeDriver is the only cell phone safety solution that is physically integrated with the Geotab GO Device. As a result, ORIGOSafeDriver provides only unified data that comes directly from the GO Device. That makes overlay reporting stress free. For example, see if hard-braking events corollate to attempted cell phone use.START PROTECTING YOUR FLEET TODAYCell phone use continues to be a major threat on the roadways today. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202154PRODUCTS AND SERVICESRGRAUTO Group has deployed smart IT and safety solutions for nearly two decades, but to differentiate itself from other players in the rapidly growing market, RGRAUTO did something different. “We decided to create uniquely tailored turnkey solutions by integrating different stand-alone products,” says Roman Ferster, founder and CEO of RGRAUTO.Vendors usually sell their own products by aggressively lobbying a particular approach or concept in order to promote their product. But because RGRAUTO represents many vendors, it is able to present tailored, integrated, and comprehensive options.Of the many big vendors and great products out there, RGRAUTO chooses only vendors who are flexible and able to quickly develop a creative solution or a specific feature based on customer requirements.RGRAUTO takes a good product from one vendor, integrates it with another good product from another vendor, and creates a perfect solution. For example, RGRAUTO integrates ADAS with telematics to create Smart ADAS with comprehensive FMS reports and analytics. Similarly, DMS combined with telematics creates smart AI video telematics, filtering what to record to save data and preserving privacy, yet retaining driver safety and valid information for reporting. The goal is to create a true solution, and this concept has been successful. WORKING SMARTThe expression “work smart, not hard,” is at the core of the company’s approach. Because fleet managers don’t have the time to watch hours of videos or to search big data sheets, RGRAUTO’s solutions include user-friendly reports and statistics. One example: Installation is the Achilles' heel of all telematics projects regardless of the type of the fleet, its size, or industry, yet providers were not addressing this point. Whether PoC, demo, or commercial deployment, installation is a serious headache for the fleet and for the vendor. Consider challenges like delayed approvals, logistics challenges (i.e., sending vehicles to authorized service centers or extensive travel time for technicians), work schedule disruptions, vehicle downtime (often during peak hours), installation costs, and subsequent expenses, even vehicle damage during installation. Additionally, situations will invariably arise that require intervention, such as technical problems that can't be resolved remotely, upgrades, repairs, dismantling, etc. These issues are shared by all telematics providers, and there are no exceptions. I-STICKERIn 2016 one of RGRAUTO’s vendors created a telematics and driver safety solution that addressed this problem—the I-Sticker. A completely wireless tracker that collects vehicle and driver behavior data operating on a tiny but powerful solar-charged battery. Since it’s wireless, managers are spared the hassle of traditional hardwired or OBD-ll trackers. Just peel and stick the I-Sticker on the windshield!Since RGRAUTO started selling the I-Sticker almost three years ago, more and more fleets are realizing how crucial these advantages are. It is a real game-changer in the telematics world and here are a few examples:• Need to deploy a few hundred or thousand hardwired trackers? It would take months or even years to install them. • Have a diverse fleet? Car fleets consist of different vehicles, makes, model years, and configuration. Each category has different protocols; some are so old, they require an analog installation. • More and more car makers are developing different (cyber and other) ways to protect against aftermarket equipment installation.I-Sticker can be used in any vehicle regardless of its type and age, allowing fleet managers to seamlessly unify their fleet into one user-friendly FMS platform with no extra costs in no time and with no hassle.RGRAUTO still sells a lot of traditional telematics, but the trend is clear: wireless and installation-free telematics. I-Sticker is just that—extremely easy to deploy and easy to use with zero maintenance required. RGRAUTO markets and sells its solutions directly or through partners and resellers such as leasing companies or telematics and aftermarket dealers, depending on the end customer preferences.A few of RGRAUTO’s clients: Coca Cola HBC, Danone Europe, Schlumberger, Praxair, Linde Gas, Nabors, Orange Business Services, Shell Exploration, Orica, LeasePlan, Arval, ALD Automotive, and many others. RGRAUTO is also partnered with leading global vendors, such as MiX Telematics, Geotab, Cloud-Wise, Ituran, Orpak-Gilbarco, Mobileye, Cipia, GreenRoad, and others.Find out more, visit www.rgrauto.com.RGRAUTO GroupWIRELESS TELEMATICS SOLUTION I-Sticker, cabin facing. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202160PRODUCTS AND SERVICESUWSIMPOSSIBLY STRONGUWS is a leading manufacturer and designer of USA-assembled truck toolboxes and accessories. The brand's products are built to the highest quality standards, offering tough and reliable storage solutions for professional tradesmen and truck enthusiasts alike. We offer a full range of truck toolboxes, transfer tanks, chest boxes, dog boxes, and other truck storage solutions.RIGIDCORE TECHNOLOGYWhile many truck toolboxes look the same from the outside, it’s what’s on the inside that makes UWS boxes so superior. The problem with most boxes is that they are reinforced with less-than-desirable methods: rod braces, half-filled lids, and even styrofoam. These materials don’t provide enough strength and rigidity to keep your lid from warping and ultimately not locking correctly.UWS has engineered the RigidCore™ foam-filled lid to solve this common problem. The lid is completely filled with a hardening, expanding foam material, sandwiched between two aluminum plates. As it hardens, the foam and the plates together create a solid structure. Hidden from view, RigidCore™ technology greatly enhances the strength of the lid, far beyond that of a traditional toolbox.RigidCore™ technology is applied to each UWS truck toolbox at its manufacturing facility in Perry, Florida. UWS assembles its toolboxes in the United States because it believes in the value of American manufacturing and the quality that it guarantees.A CUSTOM FIT FOR EACH JOBUWS crossover truck toolboxes come in a wide variety of sizes and styles to fit each truck bed and job. Many are available in multiple finish options. The brand’s Secure Lock crossover toolboxes feature a dual-locking handle system. Both handles are lockable, allowing the box to be locked on either or both sides of the truck. Secure Lock also features an interior BedRug™ liner for easy cleaning of the box, and they have a low-profile lid for better visibility out the rear window of the truck. MAXIMIZING STORAGE SPACE POTENTIALTo maximize storage space on your truck, consider installing side mount toolboxes. Most side mount boxes can be installed together with an existing crossover toolbox or utility chest, and they provide additional, secure storage and organization.UWS offers truck side toolboxes for mounting along the side of the truck bed walls and topside boxes for mounting on top of the bed walls. The brand also has underbody boxes that can be installed on a truck, cab, and chassis vehicle or a large trailer.SAFE TRANSPORTATION OF LIQUIDSIf you have liquids to transport to and from the jobsite, UWS has a transfer tank to fit the bill. UWS offers L-shaped and rectangular tanks, as well as a combo tank option that features an integrated toolbox.UWS transfer tanks are constructed with extra-thick aluminum and have a commercial-grade ventilation cap. They are great for use on the farm, at the construction site, in commercial jobs, and much more.ON-HAND, READY-TO-USE ORGANIZATIONStaying organized on the jobsite is no small matter. APRIL 2021 WWW.MWSMAG.COM MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS 65Many times choosing the right method of air compression is just as important as choosing the capacity (CFM) and pressures (PSI). Think about it like this: Do you need continuous air, e.g., jack hammers, piercing tools, or running any air tool for longer than 20 minutes at a time? Or do you require intermittent air, e.g., impact wrenches, drills, or any air tool that will be used for a short duration of time, like removing lug nuts on a wheel? If you need continuous air, then you need a rotary screw-type compressor. If you need intermittent air, then you want a piston-type compressor.THE DIFFERENCEA rotary screw compressor is air-on-demand, meaning you have immediate, continuous air that can run for hours or even days. The bonus is there is no air reservoir (tank) needed. This design uses two rotating lobes that are in an oil-flooded system. The oil serves primarily three functions: 1) it seals the tolerances between the lobes (screws) to create compression; 2) helps lubricate the bearings on the rotors; and 3) it transfers the heat from compression to the cooler. A piston-type compressor (reciprocating compressor), uses the piston and rings to build pressure and fills an air reservoir. This requires a short pressure build time to fill the appropriate size air reservoir but is ideal for on/off, short air usage applications. WHAT’S NEXT?You need to define what CFM you need by what tools you use. Boss Industries recommends sizing your compressor to the rated specifications for your tools to ensure the life span and investment in your air tools. Choosing the right type and size of an air compressor is just as important as choosing the right tool for the job.Boss IndustriesCHOOSING THE RIGHT AIR COMPRESSORFind out more, visit www.bossair.com.
MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202166PRODUCTS AND SERVICESIf you run a business that’s reliant on the dependability, performance, and appearance of one or more work trucks, you already know that keeping your vehicles in top shape is absolutely essential. In the fleet management business, there are two factors essential to maintaining a robust operation. First, proper mechanical oversight is critical. This includes the basics:• Regular maintenance checks• Proper lube/oil visits• Checking hoses for leaks and fan belts for cracks and brittleness • Checking tire quality (no damage, denigration, holes/tears, or unsafe tread)• Running systematic circuitry and engine testsSecond is making certain the exteriors of your vehicles are protected from scratches, dents, dings, and overall denigration that can quickly devalue your fleet. This includes use of a protective spray-on coating like Bullet Liner™ elastomer sealant to keep vehicles looking in pristine condition. STABLE, EFFICIENT, DURABLEThe Cooper WORK Series AWD has an open shoulder design with tightly packed center tread blocks that are highly siped. MODERN WORKTRUCK SOLUTIONS WWW.MWSMAG.COM APRIL 202172From Kenworth are completely new (from the ground up) models. The models include the Kenworth T180 (Class 5), T280 (Class 6), T380 (Class 7), and T480 (Class 8). I’ve already spent a little bit of time in these trucks already (more info on that next month!), so I can tell you confidently that you’ll appreciate some of the features and drivability of the new models. Kenworth’s design team brought some of its heavy-duty models’ best aspects and combined them with light-duty vehicle aspects. The result is a medium-duty truck that won’t tire out your drivers and helps them go easily from one jobsite to the next.Peterbilt brings us newly designed medium-duty trucks, too. The all-new Model 535 and Model 536 deliver the highest level of quality customers have come to expect from Peterbilt. Peterbilt also worked heavily with customers to ensure the Model 537 and Model 548 provide maximum versatility and rugged performance.KENWORTH MODELSKenworth’s T180 and T280 are best suited for landscape and delivery applications, whereas the T380 and T480 are perfect for utility, dump, and mixer applications. All trucks feature automatic temperature control as a standard feature—similar to those you’d see in a passenger vehicle. Drivers will also be introduced to a more tech-savvy instrument cluster. A 7-inch display gives drivers a view of critical information at a glance, and buttons on the steering wheel bring display control to their fingertips.PETERBILT MODELSPeterbilt models saw similar updates. Each truck features safer, stair-style steps to get in and out the vehicle. The cabs are all 8-inches wider than previous generations, and they each feature 4.6 cu-ft of storage. Like the Kenworth, Peterbilt added a 7-inch display to the cluster where drivers can toggle through menus using buttons on the steering wheel. The display is fully integrated with the ADAS system (collision mitigation, lane departure warning) as well as the TPMS system. Other functions include a system check and trip summary.PACCAR PRODUCTSWith both brands being PACCAR brands, they share similar components as well. Both Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks feature the new PACCAR TX-8 automatic transmission. It provides a great power-to-weight ratio and features 2.5% fuel savings compared to competitive transmissions. The 8-speed transmission, when paired with a PACCAR PX-7 or PX-9 engine, is capable of a max torque rating of up to 1,000 lb-ft of torque and a 57,000-lb GCWR. The trucks are available with PACCAR’s PX-7 and PX-9 engines. The PX-7 offers 200 to 360 hp and 520 to 800 lb-ft of torque. The PX-9 offers 260 to 450 hp and 860 to 1,250 lb-ft of torque.NEW MEDIUM-DUTY TRUCKS UNVEILEDWe’re barely in the second quarter of 2021.
