When the Isuzu NRR-EV arrives in California, customers will appreciate the added incentives provided by California HVIP. The NRR-EV’s HVIP-eligibility means customers can qualify for up to a $60,000 HVIP voucher that can be stacked with other programs (see www.californiahvip.org for more information). In addition, Isuzu’s connected service for the new NRR-EV, ISUZU360, will be an added resource for NRR-EV owners. ISUZU360 provides owners with an extension to their new vehicle warranty, complimentary scheduled service, and a host of online tools to monitor their vehicles. ISUZU360 extends the Basic Warranty from three to five years. The Li-Ion Battery Warranty is extended from three years to eight years, and up to 245,000 miles (years or mileage, whichever occurs first; mileage varies based on battery pack configuration). CONSIGLI BREAKS GROUND ON MAINE HIGHER-ED CAMPUSConsigli Construction broke ground on a new campus for Boston-based Northeastern University’s Roux Institute in Portland, Maine. The cost of the project is $500 million, according to a Northeastern news release. Milford, Massachusetts-based Consigli will build the new campus at the site of the former B&M Baked Beans factory in Portland. The building, which was first built in 1913, closed its doors in 2021, the Portland Press Herald reported. The campus will be anchored by a 245,000-square-foot learning, research and collaboration building that will house wet labs, computational labs, research spaces, and classrooms, according to Northeastern. Separate from Consigli’s work, the university is planning a major rehabilitation of the 58,000-square-foot Bean building to provide workspaces for startups and businesses.The campus will also include a new parking garage, an adjacent childcare center, public green spaces, and pedestrian and bicycle paths on the shores of Casco Bay, which will be made accessible to the public for the first time in more than a century, according to Northeastern.Over 800 graduate students are currently enrolled on the Portland campus, and with the work, officials expect enrollment to grow to 3,500 within five years.Source: www.constructiondive.com

The research examined data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and analyzed the data on fatal occupational industries from 2011 to 2022 to identify the states with the lowest and highest proportions of young worker fatalities. The reports outline the total number of deaths in every state each year from 2011 to 2022 to calculate the annual average deaths adjusted to the state’s population. Maine was deemed the safest state for young workers with 0.37 yearly deaths per 100,000 people. Maine reported a total of three deaths from 2011-2022. The second safest state was Rhode Island, which had an average annual death count of 0.44 per 100,000 people. Rhode Island reported 3 total deaths between 2011 and 2022. Ranking as the third safest state was Delaware with 0.49 deaths a year per 100,000 people, and 3 total deaths from 2011 to 2022. At the other end of the spectrum, Alaska was found to be the most dangerous state for young workers with an annual average of 7.44 deaths per 100,000 people. This corresponded to 36 deaths of young workers from 2011 to 2022. Situated directly across from Ontario International Airport (ONT) in San Bernardino County, The HUB @ ONT project is notable for its scope, location, timeline and complexity. It will also be one of the first large-scale developments in Southern California to incorporate an innovative carbon-reduction system for the slab, tilt-wall panels, and paving as part of Affinius Capital’s strategic plan for achieving significant environmental sustainability goals through concrete decarbonization methods.Premier, a national design-build construction firm, recently began mass grading the entire site. Working on an aggressive timeline, Premier will be constructing more than two million square feet consisting of four buildings during the initial Phase I of the project.The site’s proximity to ONT will require extremely careful coordination with airport authorities to manage temporary runway closures during construction.The team will also work concurrently with the City of Ontario and infrastructure contractor Granite Construction, to make extensive public improvements on every major roadway surrounding the site.“This is an extraordinarily complex project necessitating an incredible amount of precision in both planning and execution,” explains Premier’s Steven Gabbert, president, Western Region. “There is a heavy coordination and communication lift, so we’ve convened a team of highly experienced project managers, project superintendents and project engineers who will be on-site to lead this build.” SUSTAINABILITYIn addition to its complexity, The HUB @ ONT is being designed and built with sustainability high on the list of priorities. Multiple strategies for incorporating concrete decarbonization, sustainable elements and achieving LEED Silver certification for this industrial development were identified. The carbon reduction of emissions volume resulting from this project, as compared to conventional concrete design for industrial projects, will achieve approximately 31,500 tons less embodied carbon released into the atmosphere across the entire development. According to Gabbert, “This is an exciting project for our team, especially because Affinius Capital and McDonald Property Group are so deeply committed to demonstrating the impact of building green.” Gabbert is a LEED accredited professional and a certified sustainable building advisor who has served as a board director for both the USGBC Orange County and the Sustainability Council of Orange County. TIPS PANELSRather than using conventional tilt-up concrete wall panels, Premier will construct the building walls incorporating insulated Total Integrated Panel Systems (“TIPS”). TIPS panels use a specialized truss system, replacing a 4-in layer of concrete with EPS foam core within each panel and dramatically reducing the amount of concrete required. By substituting TIPS panels for standard panels, the team will achieve a significant carbon footprint reduction across the site.“This project is leading the industry by pioneering a new and exciting direction with the use of TIPS panels in lieu of the traditional concrete tilt walls,” explains Derrick Schuster, project executive. “The foam core By Jessica Porter
components are an innovative way to reduce the project’s carbon footprint by eliminating a substantial portion of cement. This is a transformational solution for achieving the elevated sustainability goals established for this industrial park.” ECOSLABIn addition to TIPS panels, Premier’s team will incorporate carbon-reducing specialty concrete EcoSlab, which produces nearly 40 percent less CO2 than traditional concrete slabs. Most CO2 emissions in concrete production occur when the limestone is burned. Since EcoSlab uses less concrete in favor of additional rebar for reinforcement, CO2 emissions are significantly reduced. This innovative process creates a more sustainable slab without sacrificing performance. Other sustainable elements incorporated into the design include rooftop solar arrays, drought-tolerant landscaping and low-flow water systems.”This project has been many years in the making. For example, one LeChase team working above surgical suites devised a split shift—starting early, suspending work for several hours while medical teams performed operations, then resuming construction later in the afternoon.TECH SOLUTIONSOther times, technology must be deployed to ensure that construction proceeds efficiently without disrupting activities or revenue streams. On one project for a financial institution, crews worked near day-traders whose jobs rely on rapid-fire information and instantaneous decisions. On another job, crews worked near computer servers hosting many millions of dollars’ worth of data. The smallest impact to these operations could have had significant, widespread repercussions. In both cases, LeChase safeguarded the surrounding activities with surge protectors and highly sensitive monitors that detect vibrations. Sensors also are available that monitor decibels and temperature changes, automated to alert crews when they approach the limits of acceptable levels.For control of particulates, a construction area can be sealed off with airtight temporary walls that hold in dust and dampen noise—and which give the appearance of permanent walls. HEPA filters can scrub the air and create a negative air pressure so that when a crew member leaves or enters a site, air containing dust and other contaminants is pulled in, trapped and safely routed, rather than escaping.TRAININGLeChase teaches many of these strategies at its Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) Center that opened in 2021 in its New York Metro office in Armonk, N.Y. The center trains employees in the use of sound-reducing walls, filters, negative air pressure, and sticky mats that remove dust and particles from boots as workers leave or enter the construction space. Employees are also trained on best practices for the construction of separation walls and ante rooms, as well as proper monitoring and documentation procedures.Technology continues to advance, producing ever more sophisticated equipment. But whatever equipment and methods are employed, the most important element of an effective disruption-avoidance plan is an alert, highly skilled crew that understands the importance of safeguarding a site’s surroundings. It became the largest horse-driving ring in America, hosting polo matches and breeding show horses. By 1984, the farm was purchased to become a complex of condominiums, committed to preserving key elements of its history, such as original stone horse fences and green pastoral landscapes.In 2022, the exteriors of the 30 condos needed an update. In addition to looking terribly discolored, the cedar shingles were cupped, cracked, and many of the shingles were falling off the buildings. Jean Sanders, Condo Association President of Oakland Farms II, Inc., and the other residents knew they needed to replace the deteriorated cedar shingles that had once given each unit its native New England look. After lots of research and consideration with the general contractor, the authentic composite shingle Beach House Shake from Tando Composites emerged as the ideal choice. Unlike natural cedar shingles, the composite material would not discolor or crack but would look like the day it was installed for the life of the structure. THE RIGHT LOOKSanders describes the decision-making process: "We looked at fresh natural cedar, which had already rotted here once, and an imitation cedar that was very flat, monochromatic, and not realistic. Then our construction team, Schernecker Property Services (SPS), presented Beach House Shake, a composite shingle. GET READY TO MOVETake control of the hauler and your daily work before the ignition has been switched on by making sure you know the truck. It’s important to have a thorough understanding of the truck's controls, capabilities, and limitations. This includes knowing how to operate it efficiently and safely in various conditions, such as on gradients, rough terrain, or in adverse weather.2. CHECK THINGS OVERAt the start of the working day, prestart checks are essential. A diligent operator conducts routine truck inspections to make sure the truck is ready for work. You should check for pre-existing damage, including identifying leaks, loose parts, and the tire conditions. Make sure lights and beacons are fully operational and you have full visibility through the windows. Check fluid and battery levels daily. Rokbak trucks have ground-level test points and a fully tilting cab for quick, easy access when servicing. A thorough equipment walkaround before starting a shift can make a big difference, and it doesn’t require a lot of time.3. KNOW YOUR LIMITSBefore you start working, learn your worksite boundaries such as speed, ground bearing weight limits, travel direction, passing areas, width and height restrictions, and no-go areas. Know your hauler’s capacity and ensure you are aware of your truck’s working limits in regard to payload. Furthermore, keep an eye on how many buckets the loader is dumping in the truck to stay within the safe operating limits of the ADT and avoid accelerated component wear through overloading. They anticipate potential hazards and adapt their driving accordingly to maintain safety for themselves and others. Inevitably there will be challenges, such as navigating tight spaces. An alert operator can quickly assess situations, make informed decisions, and take appropriate action to resolve issues while minimizing downtime. Never operate an articulated hauler if feeling fatigued or unwell.7. KEEP AN EYE ON TARGETSOperating an articulated hauler requires attention to detail to ensure proper loading, unloading, and maneuvering of materials. While an integrated payload system can account for the number of loads moved, manually recording progress in relation to a target keeps productivity proceeding on schedule. For improved fuel efficiency, minimize heavy acceleration and aim to reduce unnecessary idle time whenever feasible.8. DON’T IGNORE FAULT CODESCritical information is delivered whenever system fault codes are triggered. If a truck does develop a fault, the operator will receive a warning symbol on the dashboard. While a construction company loading equipment in the yard might not have any difficulty, a level surface with plenty of room to maneuver is much harder to find on an active jobsite. In towing and recovery applications, loading can be even more difficult. In addition to the struggles of moving dead equipment, often singlehandedly, these operators must also deal with traffic, poor visibility from darkness or weather, and soft shoulders. There is no way to eliminate these challenges completely, but safe, efficient loading is possible with the right equipment.Traveling axle trailers provide the ideal combination of features to increase safety and versatility. However, like any trailer, maximizing these benefits relies on a careful matching of product specs with the individual operation. A careful consideration of available features with a reputable dealer or manufacturer promises a long-term solution that will provide more safety, durability and better return on investment. INDUSTRY STANDARDSTraveling axle or sliding axle trailers are available from several manufacturers, each with slightly different features, but certain design standards make these trailers ideal for operations looking for versatility and ease of loading.Capacity: Generally, traveling axle manufacturers offer models with 40- and 55-ton capacity, making them ideal for transporting a variety of equipment. Loaded Deck Height: Within the U.S., legal load height is 13 feet, 6 inches. However, operators are faced with many overhead obstacles that are even lower, especially in urban environments. In these situations, a single inch can mean a difference of hours when it comes to getting from point A to point B and beyond. A traveling axle trailer with an industry leading low loaded deck height of 36-inches provides optimal flexibility for transporting taller equipment such as excavators and buses.Load Angle: The trailer’s load angle is key to safety and efficiency since it allows operators to simply drive or, in the case of dead or immobile equipment, winch loads onto the deck, eliminating the hassle of ramps and the dangers associated with driving up and over the rear axle. It also makes transporting machines with low ground clearance, such as pavers and rollers, much more convenient. Load angles usually vary between 8 and 6 degrees. Another durability differentiator to consider is the thickness of apitong decking. This tightly woven and incredibly dense South Asian wood is less susceptible to chipping and cracking, compared to oak or other hardwood, while providing more traction than metal. For maximum longevity, look for trailers offering 1.5-inch-thick (nominal) apitong. Winch: Look for a trailer with a 20,000-pound, direct-drive planetary winch, which offers up to twice the loading speed of a more traditional worm-gear model. This productivity boost is especially important for operators frequently needing to load dead equipment, containers, or other immobile objects.With remote control, operators can use the winch from any position — including behind the wheel of inoperable machinery or on the passenger side of the trailer to avoid traffic. In the public statement that preceded the release of the report, (Ret. - British Bench) the Right Honorable Sir Martin Moore-Bick, chairman of the inquiry, pronounced, “The deaths that occurred were all avoidable and those who lived in the tower were badly failed over a number of years and in a number of different ways by those who were responsible for ensuring the safety of the building and its occupants.” The list of those held responsible included the property manager, government and code officials, but also, the manufacturer of the project’s building materials, and the subcontractors, contractor, designers—including the architect and engineers—who reviewed, approved, and used the volatile materials. The root causes were attributed to such behaviors as “incompetence,” “dishonesty,” and “greed.” The massive inquiry included over 300 public hearings, 1,600 witness statements, opinions of 17 expert witnesses, and review of over 300,000 documents. The report’s findings expose current and all too common practices within the construction industry which themselves expose people to unnecessary harm. SUMMARY OF FINDINGSThe Grenfell Tower inquiry report presents a comprehensive analysis of the myriad failures that contributed to the avoidable tragedy. While the report takes aim at the building owner and management entity, government regulators, and firefighters, most instructive is the report’s conclusions about the construction professionals involved. The cladding system which was specified, submitted, and constructed, consisting of aluminum composite material panels with a highly flammable polyethylene core, was identified as a primary factor in the fire’s progression. Additionally, the report points to a lack of effective fire-stopping measures and inadequate fire doors, which further compromised the building’s safety.The report uncovers specific lapses in the specification, design, and construction of the Grenfell Tower renovations. For instance, the refurbishment process that introduced the combustible cladding did not include a comprehensive risk assessment that accounted for fire safety. The design and installation of the cladding system failed to meet even the most basic fire safety standards. Moreover, fire safety measures such as sprinklers and adequate fire escapes were either absent or insufficiently maintained.The construction industry has a long history of engineering disasters that have resulted in significant loss of life and property, including the Kansas City Hyatt Regency walkway collapse in 1981 and the Ronan Point collapse in 1968.
