REMEMBER TO GIVE THANKSThis month’s focus is on veterans. A simple “thanks” is not enough for those who give of themselves to serve our nation. Let’s remember also the families and loved ones touched by this selfless act of kindness. I’m reminded of my husband’s grandfather who passed way in October 2013. “Pop” was a Navy man and served on the USS Merrick, an Andromeda-class attack cargo ship. In preparation for the funeral, the family asked the funeral director to request military funeral honors. The director told the family his calls were not being answered; no one was picking up. I learned of this demise the evening before the funeral. My husband and his mother asked if there was anything I could do to help. I loved Pop and it would be a disgrace to not have a proper goodbye from the Navy. I accepted the challenge. I had less than 12 hours to complete my mission. Using my contacts, I weaved my way to the desk of a Navy office in Florida. I shared our situation and two Navy sailors were dispatched with orders to meet us graveside to play “Taps” and fold the flag. It was beautiful. You may be asking yourself, “why was the funeral director not able to reach the military funeral honors desk in Florida?” See, the government was shut down. Calls were not being transferred. It took my tenacity to reach the right desk. Mission accomplished. An article to read this month is “Hiring Veterans” by Josh White (pg 28). The article shares four benefits for the commercial contracting business by hiring veterans. “Successful Recruiting” by Christine Corelli is a good read this month that highlights military lessons to help recruit and manage young employees (pg 24).This November issue is also a special issue … the MCS 2021 Buyers Guide with must-see companies that are delivering solutions to help you do your best work. The profiles start on page 35 and we have a directory beginning on page 100. Enjoy this resource for the year ahead. Thanksgiving is coming up and it may not look like family get-togethers from the past. Pass the mashed potatoes doesn’t work in Zoom. I hope everyone is safe, has some family around, enjoys some good food, and looks ahead to December. What will I be doing for Thanksgiving? I’m so glad you asked. I’m cooking a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings … for two people … I love leftovers.Stay well; be strong, my friends.Cheers,From the Editor@mcsmagModern Contractor Solutions MagazineModern Contractor SolutionsPROJECT PROFILECofferdam Cells .................................................................20MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONSSpecial Inspections ............................................................22Successful Recruiting ........................................................24Hiring Veterans ...................................................................28 TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONConquering Technology .....................................................302021 BUYERS GUIDECompany Profiles ...............................................................34Directory .............................................................................94IT’S NOW OR NEVER FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY TECH ADOPTION Guest Post by Jamie GriffithsWREATHS ACROSS AMERICAHonoring our Fallen Heroes Wreaths Across America’s annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National is a tradition to honor our fallen heroes. NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com10industry newsTRADE HOUNDS LAUNCHES CONSTRUCTION JOBS PLATFORM NATIONWIDETrade Hounds announces the launch of its Jobs platform, which connects contractors directly with the skilled tradespeople they’re seeking to hire. Unlike other job boards serving the industry, Trade Hounds has built a vast community of 175,000 tradespeople that are already using the platform to showcase their work, build professional profiles, and expand their networks. Existing professional platforms have failed to meet the unique needs of the $1.3 trillion construction industry, one of the largest in the world. Sourcing qualified talent remains a huge challenge for contractors and the industry at-large. Trade Hounds believes a construction-only hiring platform is what’s needed to meet the unique demands of both workers and employers in construction. The company has taken what it calls a “worker-first approach” by building a platform that workers use for a variety of professional reasons—showcasing work, building professional profiles, and networking. Now that Trade Hounds has amassed more than 175,000 workers, they’re enabling contractors to tap into their deep and vast community of skilled tradespeople.Trade Hounds’ Jobs platform is being introduced at a time when the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has displaced construction workers and delayed projects. While disruption from the pandemic lingers, many markets are experiencing a strong recovery, with permitting and jobs starting to pick up. The Jobs platform is helping to put people back to work and advance the progress of critical construction projects across the country. For more, visit www.tradehounds.com. NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com20project profilesCofferdam Cellsmassive port upgrade at Neptune Terminals in North VancouverNORTH VANCOUVER PROJECTWe work in some pretty challenging environments,” says Brian Casper, construction superintendent with West Shore Constructors. “We need equipment that we can rely on to be durable and safe; that’s why we work closely with Bigfoot.” West Shore has been a leader in Western Canada’s heavy construction industry for more than 50 years. They are known for their outstanding work in bridge building, pile driving, deep foundation improvement, marine construction, and industrial transport. “We are a highly specialized company,” says Supervisor Michael Kobelka, “and we encounter some of the more unique problems in the heavy construction world.” THE PROJECTThroughout 2020, West Shore has been a part of the port upgrade at North Vancouver’s Neptune Terminal, where they have been using some very specialized equipment from Bigfoot’s Boscaro line of products.“At Neptune, we were asked to design and build a series of interlocked cofferdam cells, so the new coal dumper pit could be constructed,” explains Kobelka. “When it’s all finished, they will be able to bring two rail cars at a time directly over the pit, where they’ll be rotated upside down to dump out the coal. Then the conveyors and ship loaders will transfer the coal into the ships. It’s a huge project.” In order to build these deep cofferdam cells, West Shore has been driving interlocking piles to form a series of interconnected boxes, each about 20 meters by 20 meters. “We started digging from the top with our excavators, but we couldn’t go very far down because the cells are so big,” says Casper. “So, we had to lower the excavators in and out of the cells with our cranes, but we still needed a way to get the material out.” THE SOLUTIONThe solution was a Boscaro self-dumping bin from Bigfoot. Suspended by the crane, the bin could be lowered, filled with material, lifted out and dumped, all without any outside manipulation or unloading, which saved considerable time. “We’ve been using that dumping bin constantly on this project,” says Casper, “and we’ve probably hoisted out about 30,000 cubic meters of material with it. It’s been invaluable.” West Shore has been dealing with Bigfoot for years as a supplier of quality products for both rental and purchase, but Kobelka and Casper both got to know Bigfoot initially through its training programs. “Most of our guys at West Shore have gone through Bigfoot’s rigging courses,” “

Page 23

www.mcsmag.com NOVEMBER 202021says Kobelka. “For guys like us who have been in the industry for more than 30 years and have attended multiple training sessions, I can honestly say that those courses at Bigfoot are some of the best I’ve ever taken.” Whether through the training courses or through years of steady business-to-business sales and service, West Shore and Bigfoot have developed a strong relationship of trust. “Now, when we need a new product, we’ll call Bigfoot right away or we’ll go to their website,” says Casper. “And, if they don’t have what we need, they always talk to us straight, and refer us to someone else who can help. We appreciate that kind of honesty and integrity.”“We’ve never had any issues with our purchases from Bigfoot,” says Kobelka. “They always provide great products and great service.”In addition to the Boscaro dumping bin, West Shore also utilized several other key pieces of equipment from Bigfoot that have been put to good use on the Neptune project. “We needed a heavy-duty spreader bar,” says Kobelka, “so we could lower a Komatsu 138 down into the hole. You can’t do that with just any spreader bar.”West Shore used the Boscaro 110-ton system and they’ve been using it steadily at Neptune. “It’s a quality spreader bar, and it’s holding up extremely well,” says Casper. West Shore has come to expect the highest quality standards from Boscaro. “We’ve been using their man baskets for years,” Casper says, “and we recently got another one from Bigfoot. For access in and out of these cells at Neptune, we regularly have to use man baskets off of the crane. They get used a lot, day and night, and we always keep one on hand, in case of emergency, if we need to do a rescue.”CLOSING THOUGHTFor West Shore, the close working relationship with Bigfoot, and the top-quality products from Boscaro, continue to be indispensable at Neptune, one of their most challenging projects to date. for more informationFor more information, visit Bigfoot products, visit www.bigfootcrane.com.

NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com22management solutionsS pecial inspections originated in response to public safety concerns over a series of catastrophic structural failures in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Following high-profile incidents, like the collapse of a pedestrian walkway at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1981, the U.S. House of Representatives tasked a subcommittee with examining causes of the failures. The subcommittee reported the need for improved communication on construction projects and recommended the onsite presence of the structural engineer or his designee during construction.Since then, special inspections have been developed, now known as Chapter 17 of the International Building Code (IBC) and adopted by all 50 states. Special inspections code language addresses requirements for materials, fabrication, and installation, where special expertise is needed via inspection to assure that buildings are constructed according to the design specifications. Requirements are based on such factors as height of the structure, occupancy category, and additional requirements for “high” seismic and “high” wind conditions. While designed to assure public safety, special inspections are sometimes viewed by late adopters as costly additions to construction projects. However, special inspections requirements have been thoughtfully developed by the ICC code development process to increase the quality of construction and simultaneously reduce overall construction costs. This occurs as a result of the trade-off between higher factors of safety during the design process and these intensive inspections by an inspection agent to evaluate the accuracy of the construction as compared to the design documents. When implemented properly by a qualified team, special inspections add value for all stakeholders in construction projects. Here are three ways special inspections add value to any project: HIRE FOR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCEWhile special inspectors must be thoroughly trained and qualified to serve, a knowledgeable and experienced special inspector provides value far above the mandatory requirements. When hiring special inspectors, identify those who have in-depth knowledge of both the special inspections and design chapters of the building code. With the understanding of both design factors of safety and special inspections requirements, the special inspector can develop a plan that is safe and effective without adding unnecessary burden or cost to the project. In addition to depth of knowledge of the codes, look for breadth of experience. While inspectors are usually deployed based on their areas of expertise, one with the proper training and experience can manage an entire project. Whether a Master of Special Inspections who is qualified across all materials and service lines, or a Professional Engineer who has been trained intentionally across multiple inspection disciplines, identifying a lead inspector provides continuity in understanding of the design, efficiency in having one person who can manage any concurrent issues onsite, and improved communication across stakeholders throughout the project. FOCUS ON QUALITYSome project owners are tempted by low-cost special inspections programs, viewing the code as creating unnecessary cost and schedule burdens. However, when the focus is placed on quality, project stakeholders have the assurance that the structure will perform as intended, which more often saves time and money in the long run.An effective quality assurance (QA) program requires the special inspector to be more than a figurehead on the project; they must be intimately involved and regularly onsite to ensure the quality of construction. By performing in-process inspections as required, the inspector can ensure construction progresses with the specified materials, within tolerances, and with proper installation techniques, benefitting the contractor and project owner by reducing the frequency of callbacks and future maintenance Special Inspections3 ways to add value to construction projectsBEST PRACTICESBy Tommy Faulkner

Page 25

www.mcsmag.com NOVEMBER 202023issues. The inspector can proactively manage and reduce the need for field changes, providing assurance to the owner and design team that the structure is constructed, and will thus perform, as designed.QA programs require a thorough communication plan, including the documentation process and speed with which deficiencies are communicated to the contractor. By adhering to requirements for onsite presence, and communicating with the contractor quickly and effectively, the inspector can recognize deficiencies in-phase, reducing potential rework. Through this collaboration, the inspector and contractor can ensure deficiencies are corrected with limited cost and schedule impacts or safety risks. COMMUNICATE PROACTIVELYAn effective special inspections program cannot be reactive: if communication does not begin until the first deficiency is noted, a significant opportunity is lost. Pre-construction conferences provide a forum for discussing the QA program and addressing potential challenges with the project’s specific materials, fabrication, or installation techniques. Drawing on their knowledge and experience, special inspectors can identify areas of concern and consult on strategies to prevent issues during construction. In addition to the requirement for a Statement of Special Inspections (SSI) prepared by the design professional in responsible charge, the designer will provide the full road map of the testing and inspections plan. This process allows for all project participants to understand what is required by IBC and/or local codes, the quality requirements set forth by the project owner and the timeline for testing and inspections. By looking ahead, the contractor and special inspector can partner to address potential challenges in advance, rather than waiting for deficiencies. This collaboration will serve to reduce the cost of correcting deficiencies and the resulting schedule impacts.CLOSING THOUGHTWhen properly planned and implemented, special inspections add value to construction projects in areas of schedule, cost, and quality. By hiring special inspectors based on their knowledge and experience, and implementing a plan that focuses on quality and proactive communication, project owners can mitigate cost and risks during construction, and ensure structures perform as designed. about the authorTommy Faulkner, CEO of JDSfaulkner, is a licensed professional engineer, general contractor, Master of Special Inspections and realtor. NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com24management solutionsThere is much to learn from those who lead the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard when it comes to recruiting and managing today’s younger generation of employees. Every leader in your dealership should pay attention to what the military can teach.Consider, for example, how the Army overcame a serious recent challenge in meeting its recruitment goals. In 2018, the Army came up short by 6,500 enlistees. The reasons for this were many. One problem was its “Army Strong” slogan. This tagline turned out to be less compelling than its much more powerful and effective predecessor “Be All You Can Be.”The Army soon realized that it needed a better understanding of the younger generation and what makes that demographic tick.To gain those insights, Army leaders paid visits to recruitment offices around the country. Little of what they came back with should surprise anyone. They heard what we already know—that young people are tech-crazy, fascinated by apps, glued to their cell phones, avid users of social media, love new experiences, value life-balance, are impatient, and are outspoken. Surprising, nonetheless to investigators, was the observation that members of the younger generation tend to be team-oriented, value harmony, and love to learn (all good traits to bring to the armed forces and to a dealership). On top of that, twentysomethings were found to desire to contribute to the betterment of society and that they care deeply about social issues. All of this convinced Army leaders to change their recruitment slogan to appeal to these virtues. The new tagline they came up with was “Warriors Wanted.” In concert with this change, the Army trotted out a revamped and energized website, offered more generous signup bonuses, and—most recently—began advertising the availability of training for specialties and futuristic cyber-tech roles. Taken as a whole, these steps got results. The Army ended fiscal year 2019 achieving its recruitment goal of 68,000 enlistees, according to a report at armytimes.com. New slogans are in the works. SMART RECRUITMENT TACTICSIf you want to successfully recruit the younger generation, it can help to think of your company—like the Army did with itself—as a brand you need to market What’s your slogan like? Does it “sing” to the Younger Generation? Does it establish your brand? One such possible recruiting slogan would be this to appeal to youth’s enrapture with all things technologic: “Harnessing High-Tech to Build.”Or maybe headline your next want-ad with a series of questions like these: “What Do You Love? To Use State-of-the-Art Technology? To be a part of construction from concept to completion? To Help People? To Problem-Solve? To Be Part of a Great Team? To Receive Great Benefits and Bonuses? Come Work With Us! HAVE A CAUSE!If you haven’t established a cause for your business, you are indeed behind the times. Cause marketing helps non-profits and worthwhile causes, increases brand awareness and attracts the Younger Generation. In a recent survey, nearly 2/3 expressed a preference to work for companies that make a positive impact on their community or society. A few ideas: “We Have the Habit of Giving to Habitat for Humanity.” “We Donate to the Wounded Warrior Project.” “We Care Successful Recruiting3 military lessons to help recruit/manage young employeesBEST PRACTICESBy Christine Corelli

Page 27

www.mcsmag.com NOVEMBER 202025About Our Employees, Our Customers, and Our Community.” LESSONS FROM THE TRENCHESIn the military, young people are taught to follow orders. They are trained to respect their leaders, and never challenge authority. It’s different in the “rough and tumble” world of construction contracting. You’re not automatically due respect from the younger generation just because you’re the boss. You have to earn that respect. How? By communicating to your young employees with honesty, sincerity, and caring. And any show of these qualities must extend as well to subs and customers—even the difficult ones who become irate and out of control when there are big change orders they didn’t expect. They say that military commanders need to lead by role-modeling, setting a strong, indisputably good example for every activity. They must inspire their troops to embrace personal passion, courage, discipline, teamwork, and high levels of performance. But never is this truer—or more critical—than for contractors – especially now that COVID-19 has turned our businesses and lives upside down. Military leaders also play the role of teachers and coaches. They do this all day, every day. Modern contractors should emulate them at every opportunity. Unfortunately, some are so focused on operations and the bottom line, and handling the challenges brought forth by COVID, and feel they are too busy to give their time and attention to their millennials and Gen-Z employees. For those contractors, dynamic leadership has fallen by the wayside. The good news is that progressive contractors are recognizing the invaluable contribution their exemplary conduct combined with a willingness to shepherd the young makes to business success and helps to ensure the future of their dealership—even if it’s tough. THINK OF THEM AS YOUR OWN SIGNAL CORPSThe Army’s Signal Corps is all about communication. When you hire members of the younger generation, you can expect to receive from them plenty of Signal Corps-style communication—and much of it in the form of outspokenness.Rather than tell them to keep their ideas to themselves, you should be open to hearing what they have to say. That’s how retired Col. Robert Carr, Senior Fellow with the Kellogg School of Management, suggests you respond when young employees offer unsolicited opinions. Writing in a recent issue of Kellogg Insight, Carr says: “Our young recruits often come up with new ways of doing things, so you want to encourage that ingenuity. And it’s not always a bad thing to challenge the status quo. The key is to give them enough latitude to shake things up a bit without upending core traditions or standard operating procedures.“Leaders tend to get frustrated when millennials challenge them. And it’s true that some millennials can be very outspoken. But usually what they’re doing is stretching, which isn’t always a bad thing. As a senior leader, you have to have the discernment to say: ‘This millennial isn’t challenging authority; they’re challenging the way things have been done,’ which forces you to be more agile, flexible, and innovative.” Applying Carr’s advice to your business you may find it potentially very profitable to invite rather than wait for input from the younger generation. Form a “Young Leaders Club.” Ask your young project managers, superintendents, office personnel, to collaborate with you on figuring out ways to improve productivity, save money, improve operations, increase customer satisfaction, work in the field, and handle tough customers. From the suggestions they give might just emerge a solution that makes all the difference in the world.CLOSING THOUGHTSo be a modern contractor who promotes—better yet, demands dynamic leadership throughout your organization, as well as peer-support and camaraderie. Plan team get-togethers where employees both young and old can develop friendships and treat each other like family. Do fun stuff together! Donate to a worthy cause. Be bold about it! NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com28management solutionsOOf the 18.2 million veterans currently residing in the U.S., around 621,000 receive disability insurance or pension payments. Sadly, veterans with disabilities are disproportionately more vulnerable to the current impact of COVID-19. The pandemic creates a set of unique challenges to these veterans, including the fact that a majority now face a dire financial situation due to lost income. This has already led to increased homelessness and all the related mental, physical, and emotional problems that come with housing insecurity. To amend this problem, many veterans are seeking available jobs to regain lost income and to utilize their unique skillsets in an American workforce in dire need of productive workers. Now more than ever, it’s crucial that commercial contracting businesses that can hire and are looking for hard-working, motivated, and ethical employees, consider hiring veterans. It can be difficult for employers to recognize the invaluable experience and transferable skills veterans acquire during their time of military service. This creates a deep knowledge gap between veterans entering the workforce and employers searching for top talent. If your commercial contracting company is looking for new employees, now or in the future, consider these four benefits to hiring veterans. HEIGHTENED HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURESThe global pandemic has turned the world upside down, with companies across the world heightening their health and safety procedures to maintain a safe environment for all. While in the military, veterans were taught to learn and follow strict safety and health protocols for both the welfare of team members and themselves. The rules and regulations set in place in the military becomes second nature, with veterans easily adapting to new guidelines as they arise, since they are highly aware of any dangers that can happen in an environment. In short, veterans are trained to protect and care for the safety of their employees, property, and materials. TRAINABLE, ADAPTABLE, DETERMINEDVeterans continuously learn, develop, and grow from day one. As situations can change rapidly and without notice, members master adaptability and learn to improvise as their specific roles can be affected day to day. Adaptable Hiring Veterans4 benefits for the commercial contracting Industry BEST PRACTICESBy Josh White

Not to mention that veterans are persistent and determined, sticking with a problem or solution until results are achieved. An ongoing focus on development not only proves successful for the individual, but for their team, and their organization as well. EXPERIENCE WORKING IN TEAMS AND IN A DIVERSE GROUPFrom the moment they enter service, military veterans are taught that genuine teamwork derives from a responsibility to one’s peers. Being an ultimate team player is not taken lightly, as members must learn to think in terms of the greater good of the team and what they can do to improve, grow, and strengthen it. A blend of individual and group responsibilities allows veterans to work side-by-side successfully with teammates of all backgrounds—regardless of gender, race, religion, economic status, or geographic origin. As much of the job force is done with a team in a diverse workspace, veterans are already ahead of the curve. SERVANT LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHYWhen military personnel enter into the service, the majority of whom have just reached adulthood, they quickly learn the skills to be a good follower, and obtain the experience to become a great leader. Through training, education, and experiences, veterans take on a variety of roles and responsibilities. In the face of ever-changing and unpredictable situations, veterans are required to make quick and smart decisions as leaders, a parallel that translates to the fast-paced work environment. Additionally, veterans have an innate, conscientious obligation to serve others. It’s this servant leadership philosophy that allows veterans to be selfless, putting the needs of teams first, and acting towards improving the organization, rather than only themselves. CLOSING THOUGHTVeterans can bring a wide array of unique traits that transfer directly from the military world to the contracting world. In a time where so much is uncertain, your commercial contracting company can be confident in knowing that hiring veterans is not only a good idea, but good business. about the authorA disabled veteran from Indianapolis, Indiana, Josh White has served as the president of Hoosier Contractors since 2013. NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com30technology solutionsThe construction industry is undergoing a digital revolution, and new approaches are improving traditional tools and processes. With this comes the opportunity for contractors to adopt easy-to-implement technology to elevate their work to deliver projects on time, to specification, and within budget.Solutions such as machine control are more accessible than ever before, and deploying them to existing teams is a lot easier, and less time-consuming, than even a few years ago.Machine control can reduce costs and empower teams to execute at a higher experience level. Contractors and builders are taking notice and responding accordingly.According to The Civil Quarterly (TCQ), a new publication launched in July 2020 by Dodge Data & Analytics, 47 percent of contractors use machine control, while even more are looking to move in that direction. Of the contractors that use machine control, they use it on the majority (61 percent) of their projects. In the wake of COVID-19, machine control has again proven its worth on the jobsite. A more recent poll from The Civil Quarterly revealed nearly one in three (32%) contractors cite machine control as one of the most widely adopted new technologies helping them minimize negative business impacts amid the COVID-19 pandemic. While larger companies tend to use machine control two-to-three times more frequently than smaller operations, more and more it’s the smaller companies that are adopting these digital solutions to grow their business and effectively compete.“Machine control in this day and age is really the only way to go in construction, especially when you start factoring in different efficiencies,” says Jacob Daniel, GPS data manager at construction company, RV Associates. “It almost wouldn’t be possible for a company our size to do a large jobsite without spending thousands of dollars in hubs and stakes.”MOVE MATERIALS ONCEBesides labor and equipment, materials pose the most significant potential for added cost on most projects. Contractors have one chance to do it right or risk racking up potentially high costs to correct avoidable mistakes.Machine control essentially enables a one-and-done approach, eliminating the guesswork, and ensuring work is performed correctly.Plus, it eliminates the need to hire surveyors to verify work against the site’s plans, and empowers contractors to correctly place materials to grade the first time. The real benefit of this technology is that it can potentially reduce a job’s cost by 30-to-50 percent.“NO” EXPERIENCE NEEDEDWhen technology is easy to deploy, and intuitive for both novice and experienced operators to use, it’s not surprising to see a rising trend in adoption. Such solutions enable any team member to effectively contribute, perhaps as much as the most tenured team member.Manufacturers are making it easier to adopt a single solution for use with mixed fleets, and operators can use a single panels for multiple machine types.Solutions like the iCON GPS rover release the limitations of working with the pole in vertical positions and Conquering Technologyhow machine control makes your job easierDIGITAL REVOLUTIONBy Troy Dahlin

www.mcsmag.com NOVEMBER 202031increases productivity over conventional methods. Additionally, the offering collects as-built field data and stakes out designs faster, while ensuring accuracy to minimize errors.ON-TIME, ON-SPEC, WITHIN BUDGETEasy-to-use solutions, like 3D machine control, are ideal for teams that need real-time jobsite intelligence, as they communicate between the field and the office. Not long ago, design changes required someone to drive the updated details from the office to the site, a potentially time-consuming prospect.Because machine control solutions work with Leica ConX, a cloud-enabled solution, companies can manage, monitor, and share jobsite data in real-time from anywhere. Using the most up-to-date plans reduces the likelihood of errors and the need to redo work, thereby reducing the costs of mistakes.Machine control also allows contractors to mitigate problems stemming from the ongoing labor shortage and reduce overall time on the jobsite by 25 percent. The savings snowball and extend beyond labor to include lower fuel costs and savings resulting from lower wear and tear on machines.JUST THE STARTOrganizations need easy-to-understand and deploy tools that empower them to work smarter and more efficiently, while not putting their teams at risk, or sacrificing quality. Because it seamlessly and rapidly harmonizes and simplifies data handling, machine control reduces downtime, enabling higher utilization.Machine control complements other solutions currently employed on the jobsite, such as underground utility detection, to further reduce costs stemming from mistakes.Underground utilities pose a significant risk to projects, and stopping work for a utility strike can cost companies thousands of dollars. In 2018, workers reported more than 330,000 underground utility strikes in the United States and more than 11,000 in Canada, an increase of more than 13% since 2015.Technology is a professional partner that complements existing team members’ efforts, allowing them to accomplish more without complex additions.CLOSING THOUGHTToday’s jobsite is full of potential pitfalls and is challenging enough without introducing additional ones. While contractors are accustomed to finding solutions to unexpected challenges, machine control is another tool they can use alongside their other proven options. about the authorTroy Dahlin is vice president, heavy construction segment, US/CAN of Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon. NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com36company profilesAfter more than 50 years, modern contractors know that they can count on Alliance Tire Group (ATG), a group company of Yokohama, for performance, low cost of ownership, and innovation. And now, ATG has built on those to make it easier than ever to step up to the latest innovation in construction tires—radials—by pricing high-performance radial tires at the same level as most competitors’ bias-ply tires. RADIAL PERFORMANCERadial tires boost the performance of construction equipment. Their long, even footprint puts more horsepower on the ground, delivers greater traction, and improves fuel economy. Steel-belted construction keeps tires running cooler for longer service life and resists punctures. Flexible radial sidewalls reduce jolts and vibration, so they’re easier on operators and machinery. And radials last longer than bias-ply tires do—as much as two to three times longer.ATG’s skilled crews, working in state-of-the-art factories, manufacture a broad line of radial tires for backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, and skid steers so efficiently that they can compete with other manufacturers’ bias-ply tires. The bottom line: better performance and lower cost per hour.RADIAL CHOICESATG delivers a wide range of radial tires for construction machinery. The Galaxy Multi Tough is a great introduction to radials. Priced to compete head-to-head with bias-ply options, the Galaxy Multi Tough features radial construction and an innovative block tread pattern for outstanding longevity and performance on mixed surfaces. The steel-belted Alliance 580 radial uses a classic “hockey stick” bar lug design for the loose soils that backhoe, loader and utility tractor operators often find themselves in ... boosted by the added traction that radials deliver. The Alliance 585 combines steel-belted radial construction with a unique, non-directional hybrid block tread design optimized for both traction and self-cleaning. The result is a long-lasting tire for backhoes, loaders, and telehandlers that can handle any surface—and any direction—with a sure grip and wear resistance. The Alliance 550 Multi Use radial is a four-season heavy hitter, with more biting edges in its hybrid, curved block tread pattern and outstanding performance in snow as well as loose soil, mud, and even pavement. On backhoes, loaders, wheeled excavators, tractors, and skid steers, the steel-belted Alliance 550 takes equipment to the next level.MORE OPTIONSWith more than 2,000 SKUs under the Alliance, Galaxy, and Primex brands, ATG manufactures more than just great radials. Bias-ply tires from ATG are purpose built for the real-world challenges of any jobsite, from snow and sand to hard rock mines and everything in between. And, the Galaxy Severe Duty Solid (SDS) line has built a global reputation for performance in some of the most punishing environments on earth. Quality and performance have earned Alliance, Galaxy, and Primex tires the trust of some of the world’s most popular machinery companies, including CNH, John Deere, AGCO, Caterpillar, and Bobcat, which include ATG brands as original equipment. And ATG’s tires are widely used as replacement tires by contractors looking for better performance, longer service life, and lower total cost of ownership. NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com38company profilesSince 1970, American Augers has specialized in designing and manufacturing the largest category of horizontal directional drills in the industry, in addition to a full range of auger-boring machines and efficient high-pressure cleaning systems. We take pride in being American-made and internationally distributed. Our machines are produced in our West Salem, Ohio, location and are built to be rugged, dependable, and long-lasting. This keeps our customers confident about their equipment and productive on the jobsite. The saying “built to last” is engrained in our culture, and it’s reflected in our entire fleet of equipment by working as hard as the people operating it. UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION VETERANWe know jobsites are not created equal, which is why we’ve worked closely with our customers over the last 50 years to engineer, build, and customize equipment that is best suited to their needs. Our engineers take pride in their work and are as reliable as the machines they create. This is why we’ve led the way in several industry advancements. For example, our electric auger-boring system provides an alternative to traditional diesel-powered machines, minimizing the amount of exhaust and diesel fumes blowing into the boring pit. In addition, the system is designed to boost operator efficiency without compromising power, using an electric motor that produces 600,000 lbs of thrust for a more consistent power output along a wider range of auger speeds. We’ve also led the industry as the first HDD manufacturer to eliminate the chain carriage, instead utilizing a rack and pinion carriage design on our directional drills. This design provides smoother carriage movement, more precise operating control, and eliminates the need for complicated parts, which optimizes operator productivity. It’s also tough and rugged enough to withstand a variety of horizontal boring projects. When all is said and done, our #1 goal is to provide reliable, durable, and long-lasting machines that keep our customers up and running.BEYOND THE EQUIPMENT From the moment boots hit the ground to the finished project, our team is there to help our customers get the job done. Easy Kleen does things differently. They have a hands-on approach to ensure that the equipment not only meets the customers’ needs now but also takes future growth into account. Easy Kleen has equipment in the field that has been in use for more than 30 years due to its rugged, dependable, and serviceable design. The complete line of hot and cold water pressure washers, jetting equipment and trailer options, dry steam generators, hose reels, and modular heaters for vacuum trucks are designed and manufactured in a 80,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in Canada. SOLID COILSCoils are designed and manufactured in-house as well. The coil pipe is purchased directly from the mill in lengths up to twice as long as the competition. This minimizes seam welds within the coils. Easy Kleen coils are solid. 100% pipe penetration is achieved during the fusion welding process versus the competitors stick welding process, which only yields 60-70% pipe penetration. The pipe is elliptically wound with a CNC 11 axis pipe maneuvering machine which eliminates flow restrictions. Each layer of pipe is structurally braced and welded to the next to reduce pipe vibration and wear. The coil mounting studs are welded directly to the coil pipe, the pipe cannot move around within its skin. Everything down to the cutting and rolling of the skins to the stamping of the lids is carried out within the factory. CRN/ASME 30.1 pressure vessel coded coils are also available. Rugged: the only word needed to describe Easy Kleen frames. Fully welded with 3 mil power coat finish, these frames will stand the test of time. Designed in-house using 3D Solidworks software, each frame is designed for maximum serviceability. All of the components on an Easy Kleen machine are easy to access, which makes them easy to maintain and service. SUPERIOR COMPONENTS FOR SUPERIOR PERFORMANCEAll components are sourced direct from industry leading manufacturers such as Honda, Kohler, Kubota, Techtop, General Pump, Cat Pumps, Wayne Burners, just to name a few. NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com52company profilesFor more than 25 years, Express Blower, Inc. has led the pneumatic blower truck market with innovation, state-of-the-art systems, and practical experience, resulting in a greater number of large-size machines working in the field today than any other manufacturer. The mantra, “We are selling a business, not just a piece of equipment,” is ingrained in Express Blower’s culture and is reflected in the equipment and customer service provided to its customers.EQUIPMENT TO MEET EVERY NEEDBeginning as woodchip blowers more than 70 years ago, today there are a variety of Express Blower (EB) machines, some powerful enough to productively blow 1.5-inch aggregates more than 1,800 feet and soil blends more than 2,000 feet.* Including all available power packages, as well as the newly designed PTO driven high-output “HO” models and the compact TR-HD model, EB now offers 11 different machines. There are also two machines available through the Express Mulcher™ line, with walking floor, hose reel, and limited options for companies interested in a more economical machine to be used primarily for lightweight material applications.VIBRANT USED EQUIPMENT MARKETExpress Blower machines are built to last, and this longevity has resulted in a vigorous used equipment market. Recognizing that building new machines plus refurbishing used machines could strain factory and personnel capacity, EB partnered with Conveyor Application Systems, LLC (CAS) to assist in the refurbishment and sale of used EB machines. CAS is a Rexius Forest By-Products company which was the inventor of EB machines and the creator of Express Blower, Inc. Their knowledge and experience are a great asset to this market. While customers speak directly with the EB sales team when purchasing new or used equipment, CAS is responsible for securing the used equipment inventory and refurbishing the machines to get them in sellable condition. www.usedblowertrucks.comUNLIMITED OPPORTUNITIESSave time. Save labor. Offer services that few companies can while providing your business with year-round revenue streams. EB makes it easier for you to expand your business and capitalize on high profit specialty applications like erosion control blankets and berms, green roof media installations, Terraseeding®, aggregate placement, and playground safety surface installation. Erosion Control Blankets, Sediment Control Berms, Filter Sock: EB application delivers 100 percent ground contact for greater success at controlling runoff and stabilizing slopes. NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com54company profilesGAS CLIP TECHNOLOGIESGAS CLIP TECHNOLOGIESAlthough keeping employees safe while at a worksite has always been a priority, this year’s world events have placed a spotlight on maintaining safety through prevention. Gas detection is a prime example of that concept, and one of the top manufacturers of gas detection solutions is Gas Clip Technologies. They have spent over a decade specializing in providing dependable, compliance-based, affordable gas detectors that utilize cutting-edge technology. Their innovation has led to multi gas detection that is simpler and safer than ever. One prime example is their popular Multi Gas Clip Simple Plus. TECHNOLOGY THAT LASTSLike all of their detectors, the Multi Gas Clip Simple Plus arrives fully charged, calibrated and ready to use straight out of the box. However, this simple-to-use, portable multi gas detector is the first wearable gas monitor that runs for three years without needing to be recharged or recalibrated. Its longevity comes from the advanced low-power LED photometric infrared technology. Most multiple gas detectors must be charged every day. However, the extremely low drain on the detector’s battery makes the Multi Gas Clip Simple Plus the only multi gas detector on the market today to provide 1,095 days of continuous use without recharging. The constant hassle of making sure that detectors are fully charged before each use along with the daily concern of detectors powering down in the middle of a job are both eliminated.SAFETY AND RELIABILITYAdditionally, the use of low-power LED photometric infrared LEL sensor technology allows the Multi Gas Clip Simple Plus to more reliably detect the presence of combustible gases. Even in the most extreme conditions, the monitor has proven dependable by immediately warning workers of the presence of combustible gases (Lower Explosive Limit - LEL), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and carbon monoxide (CO), as well as the deficiency or enrichment of oxygen (O2) in the atmosphere. With the Multi Gas Clip Simple Plus, workers can focus on the job at hand knowing that they can rely on their gas detectors to alert them when there is exposure to dangerous gases no matter the situation. WHAT MAKES EVERYTHING SIMPLEAnother resource-saving feature that contributes to the safety and operation of the Multi Gas Clip Simple Plus is the ability to perform a full-function self-test upon activation and at regular intervals for the life of the detector to ensure proper operation of the sensors, battery and circuitry. If there is a problem, the failure alert feature displays an error message to notify the user and helps prevent workers from entering potentially unsafe conditions with faulty equipment. Additionally, the Multi Gas Clip Simple Plus allows customizable alarm set points and detailed data logging. Valuable information is documented in one-second increments, which in turn provides a “black box” of critical details that map out the development of gas exposure from the moment of detection.TOP-QUALITY CLIENT CAREIn conjunction with Gas Clip Technologies’ superlative products, their customer service department is second-to-none. Their team tests 100% of their detectors before shipping them to clients in order to guarantee product quality. This procedure helps eliminate potential downtime and expenses that can occur due to detector malfunctions. Since Gas Clip Technologies’ products are available through distributors worldwide, innovative gas detection solutions are always within easy reach. For more information, visit www.gascliptech.com or call 972.775.7577.Simple Solution to Your Gas Detection Needs

NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com66company profilesMETSO OUTOTECMETSO OUTOTECThe use of recycled concrete and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) has grown exponentially on a global scale, offering practical business opportunities for small- to medium-sized crushing contractors. Waste management has become an issue of increasing concern as cities run out of landfill space. To provide context, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which measures the generation of construction and demolition (C&D) waste in the United States, estimated that 569 million tons of C&D debris was generated in 2017.Recycling and reuse have, therefore, been identified as the efficient solutions in dealing with waste. The U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), for example, supports and promotes the use of recycled highway materials in pavement construction, in an effort to preserve the environment, reduce waste, and provide cost-effective material for the construction of highways. About 80 percent of asphalt removed from U.S. roads is recycled, according to the FHWA.WHAT TO LOOK FORFor contractors to take full advantage of this surge in recycling demand, the choice of correct equipment from a reputable supplier that has a strong global support footprint is key, says Vesa Tuloisela, director, Nordtrack offering, Metso Outotec. Some of the key considerations when buying crushing equipment for recycling concrete and asphalt, advises Tuloisela, include equipment compactness, ease of use, ability to be moved easily between worksites, accessibility, reasonable price point, quick return on investment, and product support. NEW NORDTRACK RANGEMetso Outotec has a long history of offering purpose-built equipment for recycling. A case in point is its Lokotrack LT1213 horizontal shaft impact (HSI) crusher, which has been serving this sector with great success over a long period of time. This unit is renowned for its high capacity and efficient fuel economy. It can operate as a primary or secondary crusher—especially in recycling applications, such as processing concrete, asphalt, and demolition waste. The launch of the Nordtrack range in October 2019 ushered in a new era for the global recycling contracting sector. A key feature that appeals to this group of customers is the compactness of the range. “Typically, most recycling projects happen at the point of demolition to reduce transport costs. This is mostly in urban areas, where space is at a premium. It’s important that crushing machinery is compact in size and easy to move between sites,” says Tuloisela. The Nordtrack I908S, for example, is a crusher and screen in one. It is a compact, lightweight recycling crusher that is easy to transport between project sites. TIME IS CRITICALRecycling contracts by their very nature are short, with strict project timelines. Consequently, crushing contractors are looking for quick lead times for their crushing equipment. Delivery times for Nordtrack equipment are usually just a few weeks, on average. With standard designs for off-the-shelf availability and plug-and-play features, complemented by an extensive Metso Outotec support network, these mobile solutions make it easy to get contracting operations up and running quickly. With recycling contracts mostly small in size and value, crushing contractors are looking for affordable solutions. “The Nordtrack units are generally smaller and compact in size with a lower price point than larger units with more options and tailoring. Thanks to various leasing possibilities, too, contractors can get started in the recycling business with a moderate initial investment,” concludes Tuloisela. Correct Equipment: Key to Running Successful Recycling BusinessThe Nordtrack range includes 19 products, such as small to midsize jaw crushers, impact crushers, mobile screens and mobile conveyors. The products are designed to be used in multiple applications, whether it be aggregate production, recycling or sand and gravel. The range is ideal for contractors looking for flexibility—to have a solution they can use in any application and move from one application to another. Read more at www.metso.com/nordtrack.

NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com70company profilesNLB CORP.NLB CORP.We’ve been helping contractors, private industry customers, and municipalities use the power of ultra-high-pressure water—up to 40,000 psi—for everything from surface preparation of concrete and metal, road construction industry pavement marking removal, and hydro demolition, as well as a host of other specialty applications where water may be a better more environmentally friendly option. GLOBAL REACHNLB equipment can be found in every region in the world and in myriad applications. Contractors are at the heart of NLB’s customer base. Long-lasting and smooth-running equipment give them the assurance that their equipment will perform as needed and without worry. And when service is required beyond a customer’s ability, a global distributor network of knowledgeable sales and service assistance is there to keep the equipment running and a company producing. If a well-stocked distributor doesn’t have what a customer needs, NLB’s main warehouse can ship parts worldwide efficiently and when they’re needed.WHY WATER?These environmental concerns are becoming more important every year as traditional methods involving sandblasting, use of chemicals and cleaning compounds, and other methods that produce unwanted air effluence and run-off are more heavily scrutinized and limited by customer and government mandate. NLB’s newest technology, the E-Clutch ™, is a PTO-free system that reduces water usage and lessens unit maintenance, resulting in less water on the ground and longer cycle times in the field. Utilization of water also leaves a clean, chemical-free surface and leaves an excellent surface finish if a coating or refinishing process is necessary. MEETING INDUSTRY NEEDSAs new building costs rise, the refurbishment of existing structures become more attractive. But, in some of the more traditional methods of construction preparation and demolition, contractors can run up against application or regulatory difficulties. We’ve responded by developing not only the water jetting tools for applying high pressure water, but also the means to capture the spent water and material with vacuum and other containment processes. Further, there is a greater emphasis on safe operation of equipment in these processes. NLB has responding strongly by developing a number of remote controlled, hands-free products that allow the user to effectively utilize water jetting while providing a safer environment for their workers. A PARTNER IN YOUR SUCCESSNLB sales engineers are more than available to walk customers through an application and provide the right water jetting solution for them. Our consultative approach assures we are going to match up the right product for a specific application. Our nationwide rental program with rent-to-own options can also allow a customer to try water jetting before making a capital equipment commitment. We have rental facilities in six states that give us a regional coverage that even allows unit delivery and pick up should a customer want it. Water Jetting Makes It Possible

NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com72company profilesConstruction management is an integral part of the process that influences the time and cost put into a project. Whether in the field or in the office, each decision made requires careful analysis to ensure that each part of each phase is effectively executed. That’s why RedTeam developed a construction management platform that integrates all of these required aspects to make sure your business functions smoothly, easily, and successfully.THE REDTEAM EXPERIENCERedTeam: Developed by general contractors, the platform is specifically designed to improve productivity and efficiency using experience from the field. Created with the commercial general contractor in mind, there are five key aspects the platform provides to help businesses monitor upcoming projects, convert information safely in the cloud, and manage campaigns, opportunities, and interactions.RedTeam allows businesses to consolidate all data in one secure location that is accessible through sub-locations determined by the platform’s key aspects: business development, preconstruction, project management, field management, and financials. This comprehensive platform enhances collaboration and captures all metadata critical to operational efficiency that results in work done right the first time.BUILT FROM THE GROUND UPRedTeam was built from the ground up by CEO Michael Wright, who worked as, and still is, a licensed commercial general contractor. Michael Wright says, “I love the business of construction. Building is a core human endeavor, much of it timeless by nature, visceral hard work measured in lengths, widths, heights, and volumes. Simply put, our job is to help construction project teams work safely and effectively while delivering work they can be proud of, done right the first time. At this point, we’ve been developing great software for more than 20 years, but everything we’re doing still feels new and exciting. As much as we’ve done, there is that much and more yet to do. For me, there’s nothing I’d rather be working on than helping contractors succeed.”Construction is one of the largest industries in the world and depending on the size of a project, it can involve a magnitude of individuals working either in the office or in the field. Construction management ensures that the planning process flows smoothly and seamlessly and that each stakeholder is held accountable on all projects.COMPREHENSIVE PLATFORMWith RedTeam, project teams are able to communicate and collaborate instantly online by having the ability to create and share documents, post updates, upload photos, monitor performance, and much more. The platform has every aspect of a business’s construction project covered. The comprehensive platform was built with flexibility and ease of access in mind. Businesses are given the right tools to succeed from day one with the entire platform at their fingertips. REDTEAMREDTEAMTime and speed are important [in a construction management platform] but a pace that is too fast leads people to give up and go back to what they were doing before. I liked the fact that RedTeam offers more flexibility with what they’re willing to do, and the overall navigation makes sense. ~ 24HR BOOKKEEPER, A CONSTRUCTION FINANCIAL COMPANY

NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com90Surface protection for steel tracked construction equipment is a deal-breaker for most contractors today, and for good reason. Many excavators come from the factory with bolt-to-link “roadliner” rubber pads for this reason; however, rubber didn’t seem to be performing very well and Superior Tire noticed it. “We see it at almost every jobsite we go to—chunks of rubber, chewed up pads, and an unhappy contractor that just bought the pads a few hundred hours ago. There’s a far better solution,” says Kevin Rotondelli, national sales manager at Superior Tire. Superior Tire looked to polyurethane, a far stronger pad material, to solve the durability issue and created the CUSHOTRAC® ReDDi™. Confident in its performance, they gave it a work-life guarantee of 2 years or 2,000 hours—whichever comes first. That’s not all they set out to solve either. Kevin stated that contractors were being left waiting weeks and even months in some cases due to overseas shipping issues. “We manufacture right here in Pennsylvania and we designed the CUSHOTRAC® ReDDi in a way that allows us to ship off the shelf in 72 hours or less, and we guarantee that availability as well,” he says. “You don’t have to over-pay for poor product and you don’t have to wait forever—you can buy a better made, American product, faster and cheaper.”Superior Tire & Rubber Corp. has been designing and manufacturing rubber and polyurethane track pads for more than 40 years. Their industry leading CUSHOTRAC® Track Pads are used to protect existing infrastructure from damage caused by the steel grouser shoes typically found on crawler type construction equipment. Kevin Rotondelli and his team work alongside contractors, operators, and mechanics, in person and on jobsites to understand the capabilities and problems they face.Superior Tire & Rubber Corp. was founded in 1964 in Warren, Pennsylvania. They’re one of the few polyurethane and rubber manufacturers that operate entirely in the United States. Kevin states in closing, “Being an American Made company is important to us; it’s something that we’re proud of. There are a lot of companies out there outsourcing their manufacturing to foreign countries for ten cents on the dollar—but you get what you pay for.” Superior Tire is also one of the only rubber and polyurethane tire and wheel manufacturers in the US to be certified to ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management. They are national OSHA compliant and CAL-OSHA approved. The caps are easy to use and only two caps are needed per 8 feet of rebar (3 per 8 feet in California). They’re incredibly cost effective; instead of having to purchase a cap for each rebar, you can use far fewer pieces and still get better protection. They’re rarely knocked off or lost, so neither money nor precious time searching your jobsite for lost caps is wasted. Plus, these caps are reusable. Carnie Caps are made in the USA and ship in boxes of 100 from Moline, Illinois, Monday through Friday. Ask about quantity specials. Check the website for additional information and safety articles. company profilesThe Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve is the original engine oil drain valve. More than 40 years ago, founder Mr. Yamamoto invented the Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve, forever changing the messy task of changing oil into a “simply effortless” one with a simple flip of a lever. Since 1976, over 13 million valves have been sold worldwide to fleets, OEMs, DIY mechanics, auto shops, and more.Fumoto USA is the proud primary importer and distributor of Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valves in the United States. Named after its majority shareholder and inventor of the Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve in Japan (Fumoto Giken Co., Ltd. – fumotogiken.co.jp), Fumoto USA is a closely held corporation with the majority of its shareholders being the inventor and ISO-certified manufacturer of the Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve. This close relationship allows Fumoto USA to quickly respond to customer requests for new products and designs. Fumoto USA strives to be unmatched in quality, reputation, and service. For more information, visit fumotousa.com.FUMOTO USAOff-road machinery is subjected to dust and debris that, in just a few hours, can bog down the equipment and render it less productive. Fuel consumption and downtime will increase, and the bottom line of any construction operation will be negatively impacted. By eliminating the need for operators to stop the equipment to clean out plugged radiators, the installation of a Cleanfix reversible fan will help maximize the machine’s productivity. While delivering engine cooling equal to the machine’s standard fan, the Cleanfix replacement fan additionally provides powerful cleanout of dust and debris by reversing the airflow. The innovative Cleanfix design, by which the blades rotate through the cross position, ensures that not just the grille is cleaned off, but more importantly the cooler also. Other “reversing fan” systems rely on changing the rotational direction of the fan while the blade profile remains the same. This results in low pressure and highly turbulent reverse flow conditions. Reef Industries specializes in custom plastic laminates that safeguard and prolong the service life of customers’ investments. Products range from covers that protect equipment during outdoor storage to underground marking tape that ensures buried utilities are protected from accidental dig-ins. Reef Industries provides customers with dependable and proven high-quality materials for long-term performance. Each year, countless building owners suffer the problems associated with material and systems failures due to moisture. Reef Industries’ Griffolyn® vapor barriers and vapor retarders can prevent water vapor from causing poor insulation performance, structural damage, and other moisture-related problems. The main reason for retarding the transmission of water vapor through the building envelope is to prevent water vapor from condensing within the building structure cavities. The Griffolyn polyethylene vapor retarder system’s low permanence keeps moisture from infiltrating the building envelope. For more information, visit reefindustries.com.REEF INDUSTRIES

NOVEMBER 2020 www.mcsmag.com112The last decade has seen an explosion in 3D printing, among hobbyists and professional users alike. The ability to prototype—or even, increasingly, industrially produce—almost any component with just a CAD package and a 3D printer has transformed the manufacturing landscape. Although there are drawbacks to the process, including proportionate cost and scalability, recent improvements in 3D printing capabilities meant that pre-COVID-19 commentators predicted a bright future for this technology and the sector had been on a solid upward trajectory for around a decade. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has wrought havoc with many sectors, including the automotive, aerospace, and industrial markets that have adopted 3D printing most enthusiastically. This, and other factors, are impacting 3D printing just as it reaches maturity as a versatile manufacturing technique, and have stalled that pattern of growth. But for how long?IDTechEx’s new report, “3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing 2020-2030: COVID Edition,” answers that and related questions, and takes a look into the next decade for 3D printing technologies. While COVID has clearly had a huge effect on industry, there remains every reason to forecast a brighter future. “Despite COVID, the 3D printing market will be worth $45 billion in 2030”. DIVERSE AND EVOLVINGWithout doubt, the impact of COVID-19 is being felt at a pivotal point in the evolution of 3D printing. Having been invented in the early 1980s, the technology became more widespread following expiry of a key patent in 2009, and within a few years the technology had become affordable enough for entrepreneurs and hobbyists to use.Initially, most printing used the fused deposition technique with plastic filament which, while useful, had clear limitations in terms of the accuracy and durability of objects produced. However, new techniques were quickly developed, including 3D printing with metal, carbon fiber, and fiberglass materials, which opened the way for more sectors to replace traditional fabrication with 3D printing. The precision of printed objects has also increased, and the latest generation of 3D printers has the capability to work to measurements smaller than the width of a human hair. This brings the potential of 3D printing to even more industrial sectors, and extends its use in output-critical environments including aerospace and medical devices.Adoption of 3D printing currently varies much by industry and geography, with use concentrated in the US and parts of Western Europe, leaving many markets as yet untapped.Apart from the market for 3D printers themselves, several related sectors have grown alongside the 3D printing boom. Chief among these are the development and production of printable materials for various markets, and third-party enterprises that refine and finish 3D-printed goods. Whether these will emerge from the pandemic, and/or remain sustainable as printing techniques become more refined, are important questions.CLOSING THOUGHTAs a manufacturing technique, 3D printing’s future is entwined with that of the industries it serves. Those industries have been hugely affected by COVID, but will doubtless be revived in due course—although like many businesses, their “new normal” may differ greatly from the old. There are other issues that could restrict 3D printing technology, too, including trade-offs between speed, precision, volume, and scalability; cost per item; the nature of printable materials and access to markets and supply.
