WHO WE ARE MOBB United is a movement and organization that started as a FaceBook group founded by Depelsha McGruder on July 7 2016 as a space for her and 30 initial friends to share concerns fears and propose solutions to the challenges their sons face Today one year later the FaceBook group has grown to over 175 000 members and has developed into two non profit organizations with members across the United States and the world Moms of Black Boys United Inc provides information and support for moms of Black sons while promoting positive images of Black boys and men These moms representing every race age socioeconomic background marital status educational and professional level are united in the goal of changing the perception of Black boys and men Moms of Black Boys United for Social Change is focused on protecting our sons by influencing policy that impacts how Black boys and men are treated and perceived by law enforcement and in society We aim to change the trajectory of racial injustice to ensure that our sons survive and thrive MOBB United is a resource and voice for Moms of Black sons Our mission is simple We want our officers AND our sons to get home alive every night MOBBUNITED ORG MOBBUNITED

VISIONARY Depelsha Thomas McGruder founder of MOBB UNITED was an entertainment executive living in Brooklyn NY However the founding of MOBB United came from a personal space After watching the viral videos of the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile Depelsha wanted to vent But where How She invited about 30 of her close friends who she knew were also worried about the safety of their Black sons This Facebook group would be a refuge for them to speak about the unique challenges and dangers their children faced particularly when it came to encounters with law enforcement Within an hour or two there were 1 000 members By the end of the day more than 21 000 moms from all across the country had joined the group Two months later we were more than 150 000 members and held over 15 local meetings nationwide including New York Washington D C Los Angeles San Diego Atlanta Charlotte Houston Dallas San Antonio Nashville Chicago and Bentonville Arkansas Depelsha leaned on her friends a few passionate moms and her experience to develop committees that are mobilizing to address national state and local legislation and policies build stronger community relationships and improve media imagery Depelsha is married and has two sons ages 8 and 5 Depelsha is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and The Links Inc In 2011 she was selected for The Network Journal s 40 Under Forty Achievers Award Depelsha graduated first in her class with a bachelor s degree in Broadcast Journalism from Howard University and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School MOBBUNITED MOBBUNITED ORG

CURRENT PROGRAMS CAMPAIGNS MOBB UNITED FOR SOCIAL CHANGE Policy Development Outreach Issue MOBB United position statements on current and potential legislation impacting treatment of Black males Examples include Raise the Age bills in NY NC and a criminal justice reform package in Louisiana predicted to reduce the prison population by 10 Ongoing outreach to local state and federal officials to influence policy development and decision making Advocacy Calls to Actions Drive members to action by launching call letter writing social media and petition campaigns and encouraging them to show up to share MOBB United s agenda at government and community meetings Rapid Response Demonstrate power by organizing groups of moms to respond in a coordinated way to crisis situations and cases of injustice that require immediate attention Mobilize moms to voice their concerns daily to local state and federal officials and via media outlets

CURRENT PROGRAMS CAMPAIGNS MOMS OF BLACK BOYS UNITED INC Monthly Informational Webinars Expert guided webinars provide vital information for moms of Black sons Examples include seminars on Knowing Your Rights How to Interact with Law Enforcement Recognizing and Dealing with Trauma Preventing Bullying and a Virtual Vision Board Party for moms and sons Executed through strategic partnerships with experts and partner organizations Storytelling Highlights moms and sons telling their stories and sharing their experiences fears and aspirations with the goal of changing perceptions and driving broader empathy and awareness of the plight of Black males in America Support MOBB United has created an eco system that promotes self care and provides a community of support Specialized support groups enable deeper personal connections i e moms of special needs sons moms of incarcerated sons Our MOBB Connections program provides aunties away from home for sons who go away to college The MOBB Connections Database connects moms and sons to programs and professional services when they need them most Engagement Creating opportunities for meaningful connections between Moms and Sons through coordinated volunteer efforts and community gatherings nationwide
