October 2023There is a lot of great work happening in the Minnehaha Leadership Institute thismonth. We are thrilled to see our students continuing to grow and develop as servantleaders and use those leadership skills to create spaces of belonging and care in ourcommunity! Here is a little update on what is happening and what is to come.YEAR ONEThe 10th-grade Fellows have been discussing and learning about the power of scripture and howthat guides us as we grow into transformational leaders. We had the pleasure of welcomingPresident Dr. Harris to share about her leadership experience and how being rooted in faithchanges the way we lead. YEAR TWOThe 11th grade Fellows have discussed the importance of looking to the Bible to better understand howGod has designed them. They have also begun studying the Parable of the Prodigal Son from Luke 15:11-32by analyzing the motives of each character and what it means to live for God.YEAR THREEThe 12th-grade Fellows continue to work through exercises to help them clarify a sense ofvocation. In October they worked to identify significant stumbling blocks that are preventing themfrom committing to a particular direction after high school. They engaged in good conversationabout the internal, financial, peer, and family pressures that make the decision about post-highschool plans difficult.
This month, Community Leadership Track Interns focused on the topic of listening. Before we lead we mustlisten. Leaders seek to understand the perspective of others before they communicate their own point. They show empathy and ask good questions. As a result, they earn the right to be heard. OCTOBER CHALLENGE: Think of some activities or situations in your typical day that require carefullistening (i.e. class, conversations, etc). Pick one of these moments and focus all of your attention onlistening carefully to what is being said. Try not to speak. See if you observe anything different.WHAT ARE THE CLT COHORTS UP TO???HEALTHBANDHealth Interns highlighted Drug Awareness month by introducing a speaker from Hazelden that talked withthe students about the impact of alcohol and marijuana use on our bodies and lives. The interns alsoprovided more information for students to learn from during the week with prizes given to correct answersabout the content.CHOIRChoir Council were servant leaders at the Fall Vocal Festival by cleaning up the classroom spaces afterthe concert to make them ready for classes the next day. They also offered the pre concert devotional - atime we center ourselves and pray before the performance. The Band Council helped plan and execute a successful day of Homecoming Pep Band, including lunchand an opportunity for 8th grade students to join in. ORCHESTRAOrchestra Council thought about our lesson on hospitality in September and considered how they couldextend that to their 6th-8th grade peers as they join us for the Fall String Festival. Their answer:Homemade cookies (which they made!) and an intentional meet and greet after the concert.CHAPELChapel interns have been planning, preparing, and leading our chapel services for the fall semester, hearing from speakers about how we live out this year’s theme verse, Colossians 3:12-15.
Whose approval are you truly trying to gain? What can you do to remember whom you serve? What specific actions do you need to make or change to glorify God?This month's Athletic Leadership Track began with the FCA Devotional: Silent Servitude. Athletes discussedthe following questions:As a group they talked about the example of service that John Carlson set as a custodian at Minnehahafor many years. Students had time to complete the questions about what they as leaders of their teamcould do for service. Students discussed their answers as a small group and then shared out their answerswith the whole group! SOCIAL AND PUBLICITYThe social and publicity interns worked hard at the end of September to plan a fun Homecoming week andweekend for the upper school student body! Events that the interns planned include the theme for theweek (Dancing with the Stars), spirit days, grade level olympics, and the dance. The next dance we'll beworking on will be Sno Daze in February, but between now and then we'll be having another spirit week forfun, and other fun social events within the school days. This is a great group that's dedicated to schoolspirit and making fun memories for the MA student body!DIVERSITYIn October, the diversity interns created assembly presentations focusing on Hispanic Heritage Month andIndigenous People Day for their fellow student body. They have held three sessions of Diversity Club, whichare small group sessions open to anyone who wants to learn about the culture of others and share theirown with the group. We look forward to our next assembly that will honor Native American Heritage Monthin November. SERVICEThe Service Intern ran their first service project - The Winter Clothing Drive - with great success! In total, there were 323 winter clothing items donated and delivered as a team to Vine + Branches, a clothingdonation service based out of Hope Church in Richfield dedicated to assisting those with unmet clothingneeds, providing an affordable and consistent resource for everyday necessities.
