01 SSJ HEALTH & WELLNESS FOUNDATION | ANNUAL REPORT 2023 & 2024LOOKING BACK AT 4 YEARS OF TRUST-BASED PHILANTHROPYAs part of our 2020 Strategic Plan, the Sistersof St. Joseph Health and Wellness Foundationadopted a trust-based philanthropy (TBP)approach in 2020. According to the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project, TBP advocatesfor “mutual accountability between fundersand nonprofits to create philanthropicsystems and structures that reflect theneeds of communities.”The West Virginia Prevention Research Center used Ripple Effects Mapping, aqualitative evaluation tool that centers the success of the project or initiative, toassess the impact of the TBP model from the perspective of grant partners, grant-makers, and foundation staff in August 2024. Several important themes developed.Building Relationships that are Meaningful and JustSSJHWF built meaningful relationships between grantmakers, program staff, andgrant partners. Coffee conversations - which bring grant partners and programstaff together to discuss progress and troubleshoot if necessary - were “an organicway to build relationships between SSJHWF and their grantees.” Theseconversations led to “support beyond the check” where SSJHWF was able toconnect the dots between grant partners and other partners of the Foundation whocould support the work. Grantmakers felt the coffee conversations and buildingrelationships around trust and collaboration “adds deeper value” to grantmaking. Moreover, the shift to trust-based philanthropy removed power differentials that___historically have beenpresent in grantmakingand can limit relationalpotential between allparties. This led tostronger relationshipsthat encouraged moreimpactful work.

SSJHWF also provided momentum to the trust-based philanthropy movement byhighlighting their successes and challenges with other foundations. This helpedseveral other foundations in other states to adopt a trust-based philanthropymodel. Moreover, “two local foundations completely shifted their approach toalign with trust-based philanthropy.” The implementation of a trust-basedphilanthropy model SSJHWF streamlined their paperwork and reporting processes to provide grantpartners more time to do what they were funded to do. By reducing the amount oftime grant partners spent on reporting, partners felt they could spend more timeto creatively address issues they are passionate about and had the freedom andflexibility to do so. Another major driver of innovation was unrestricted, multi-year-SSJ HEALTH & WELLNESS FOUNDATION | ANNUAL REPORT 2023 & 202402Freedom and Innovation funding. This gave grant partners the ability to pay for staff to complete theirprojects effectively, which is crucial to making a real difference in West Virginiacommunities. Both grantmakers and program staff noticed these effects as well. The Trust-Based Philanthropy Movementphilanthropy model for grantmaking atthe Sisters of St. Joseph Health andWellness Foundation led to improved, just relationship development betweengrant partners and grantmakers thatwas facilitated by open communication, collaboration, freedom, and trust whilealso making improvements to WestVirginia communities.
