WHICH CRUISE LINE SHOULD YOU BOOK?The majority of people who try a cruise for the first timewill love it, and many end up cruising again and again. So, which cruise line should you book? It’s not an easy decision with so many to choose from. There are dozens of cruise lines out there, and no twoare alike. Some just operate big ships. Some operatesmall ships. Some just sail in North America. Others sailall over the world. Some offer ships designed for familyfun, whereas others won't allow children onboard. When you think of a “cruise ship,” you may think of thegiant floating mega-resorts operated by the likes ofRoyal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line you see intelevision advertisements - the kind of ships that carrythousands of passengers and have all sorts of gee-whizamusements on their top decks. But the world ofcruising also includes companies that operate farsmaller, more intimate vessels that carry just a fewdozen to a few hundred people. These ships have acompletely different vibe. They’re more like smallboutique hotels floating from place to place. In addition, you’ll find cruise lines all over the mapwhen it comes to price points. Just like with land-basedresorts and hotels, there are cruise lines for people onthe tightest of budgets and cruise lines that cater topeople where money is no object. There really is something for everyone, and over thenext few pages we aim to share a little bit about someof the cruise lines we offer. To ensure you get the correct one for your needs speakto the agent who sent you this ebook.C O N T A C T Y O U R L O C A L A G E N T T O B O O KT H E M I N I M A G - A U G U S T E D I T I O N

A SIMPLE GUIDE WITH REAL-LIFE EXAMPLESChoosing the perfect cruise can feeloverwhelming - after all, there are so manyoptions. From luxury liners to adventure - filledexpeditions, short getaways to world cruises, there’s something for everyone. The key topicking the right one? Knowing what youwant out of the experience. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help youdecide - with real-life examples to bring it allto life.1. DECIDE WHAT KIND OF EXPERIENCEYOU WANTAsk yourself:Do I want to relax or explore?Do I want a family trip or an adult-onlyexperience?Do I want a party vibe or peace andquiet?Example:Sarah, a single mother of two, was looking fora fun-filled family vacation. She chose a 7-night Caribbean cruise with Royal Caribbeanbecause of the kids’ clubs, water slides, andfamily-friendly excursions. It allowed her torelax while her kids stayed entertained. On the other hand:Mike and Jen, a couple celebrating theiranniversary, chose a Celebrity Cruise to theGreek Isles. It offered a more refined, quieteratmosphere with fine dining, wine tastings, and stunning romantic stops like Santoriniand Mykonos. How to choose the right cruise:C O N T A C T Y O U R L O C A L A G E N T T O B O O KT H E M I N I M A G - A U G U S T E D I T I O N

2. PICK THE RIGHT DESTINATIONCruises go everywhere, from the Caribbean andMediterranean to Alaska, Asia, and evenAntarctica.Ask yourself:Do I want sunshine or cool weather?Culture and history or beaches and cocktails?Close to home or far away?Example:Tom, a retiree with a love for history, opted for ariver cruise along the Danube through CentralEurope. He got to explore castles, old towns, andenjoy immersive guided tours in Vienna andBudapest.Meanwhile:Lena and her group of friends wanted fun in thesun and nightlife, so they picked a 5-nightBahamas cruise with Virgin Voyages - adultsonly, full of beach parties, yoga, and trendy food.3. CONSIDER THE CRUISE LINE’S PERSONALITYEach cruise line has its own vibe.Royal Caribbean: Action-packed, family-friendlyCarnival: Affordable, fun, party atmosphereNorwegian (NCL): Flexible dining andentertainmentCelebrity Cruises: Upscale, modern, adult-friendlyVirgin Voyages: Trendy, adults-only,unconventionalDisney Cruise Line: Magical, best for familieswith kidsViking: Elegant, cultural, adult-focusedMSC: European flair, family-orientedExample:Jasmine wanted to go solo and meet newpeople, so she chose Virgin Voyages. With its solocabins, modern nightlife, and group fitnessclasses, it was perfect for her.C O N T A C T Y O U R L O C A L A G E N T T O B O O KT H E M I N I M A G - A U G U S T E D I T I O N

4. CHECK THE ITINERARY AND PORT TIMESNot all cruises spend equal time in port vs. atsea. Some prioritise the destinations, othersthe onboard experience.Example:Jake and Laura wanted to explore as much ofItaly as possible. They chose a Mediterraneancruise with MSC that had long days in Rome,Naples, and Venice. In contrast:Emma and Steve booked a repositioningcruise from Miami to Barcelona. With manysea days, ideal for relaxing, reading, andenjoying the ship’s spa and entertainment.5. MATCH YOUR BUDGET AND TRAVEL STYLECruises range from budget-friendly to ultra-luxury. With this in mind, factor in:What’s included (drinks, Wi-Fi,excursions, etc.)Cabin type (inside, oceanview, balcony, suite)Extra costs (gratuities, shore trips, specialty dining).ExampleLeo, a first-time cruiser on a tight budget, chose a 4-night Carnival cruise in an insidecabin. It gave him a great intro to cruisingminus the big price tag.C O N T A C T Y O U R L O C A L A G E N T T O B O O KT H E M I N I M A G - A U G U S T E D I T I O NWhereas:Sandra and her partner wanted a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They splurged on a suiteaboard Regent Seven Seas - an all-inclusiveluxury cruise that covered everything frombusiness-class flights to excursions andchampagne - the ultimate in luxury cruising.6. THINK ABOUT THE SEASONSome destinations are seasonal. Alaskacruises typically run May–September. TheCaribbean is year-round but has a hurricaneseason. Europe is best spring through fall.Similarly, some cruise lines run seasonalthemed cruises for things such as Halloween, and Christmas.Example:Alex and Priya wanted to avoid the crowdsand save money, so they booked aMediterranean cruise in early May. Theweather was great, and prices were lowerthan during the peak summer season.FINAL THOUGHTSThere’s no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all”cruise. Ultimately, the best one is the one thatfits your travel style, budget, and dreams. Whether you’re sailing for sun, scenery, orstories to tell, there’s a cruise that’s just rightfor you.

Prices generally don’t decrease over timebut if you are lucky to see that, then you maybe able to get a price adjustment. However, this is not guaranteed.Booking early, like most activities/holidays etcensures both a lower price and better cabins.Popular categories fill up quickly as families orcouples would want the bigger cabins orbalcony suites. Prime locations are from mid-ship to the upper decks. However, if you are prone to seasickness, avoidthe forward and aft locations (the very back orfront of the ship).Cruise ships have a variety of accommodations.Ensure that you understand the size andinclusions of stateroom categories. This willhelp you to determine the best setup for yourfamily or yourself. Also, how long will you be inthe cabin? A place to just sleep, shower and getout to experience? You could be saving thatlittle extra to use at your destinations oractivities/photos for the memories. In addition to the inside, balcony rooms, andocean view, other classes of staterooms mayhave extra privileges. They tend to vary bycruise line. When you are looking at the sites you willgenerally note that ‘Guaranteed Cabins’ comeup at a better price. These guaranteed cabins, you will be booked in for a cabin in yourcategory. You will not receive a cabin numberor location until you receive your final boardingdocuments. River cruising is a relaxing, immersive andthoroughly enjoyable form of travel where youcan enjoy ever-changing scenery along thebanks of waterways such as the Danube, Rhine,Seine, Douro, Volga and Yangtze. Unpack justonce on an award-winning, state-of-the-art 190-guest Longship and journey into the very heart oficonic cities and charming towns.A RIVER CRUISE CAN BE DEFINED AS:A form of leisure travel that takes guestsalong inland waterways.Usually there are several port stops over thecourse of each passage.Typical river cruises often last longer than aweek.Carry anywhere from 100 to 250 guests, depending on the ship size. Are popular on many of the world’s majorrivers, including the Danube, Rhine, Volgaand YangtzeACCOMMODATIONS:River cruises are brimming with onboardamenities. Staterooms are most often river-facing, and come equipped with hotel-style beds, private bathrooms, individual climate control, refrigerators, safes and TVs. Higher stateroom categories may have Frenchbalconies, verandas, and separate sleeping andsitting quarters. Rooms range from 150 to 600square feet.Guests receive excellent and personalised servicefrom onboard staff. Additionally, ships includerestaurants, lounges and bars, as well as free Wi-Fi. Some ships even come equipped withlibraries, boutiques, pools and/or sun deckCUISINE:Guests are given a choice of dining options, including where and what to eat. Breakfasts caneither be enjoyed al fresco or at the morningbuffet, while lunches and dinners can be eatenwhile viewing passing sights or with friends in acommon eating area. Open seating is offered, allowing guests to meet new people or enjoy thepresence of the same people each day. Cruisesoffer regional cuisine and use locally sourcedingredients to help with their authenticity. Alsocommon are wine pairings, selected from localtastes to help guests get a closer understandingof a region's culture.THINGS TO DO:River cruisers spend more time in the cities, towns and ports along the way. Included shoreexcursions consist of guided tours that helpguests become well-acquainted with the culture, art and history of their destinations. In addition toguided tours, guests can roam freely around localstops or arrange optional shore excursions. There's always ample opportunity to findsomething to do in every port, whether it'svisiting an ancient castle, attending a classicalconcert or enjoying a famous museum.C O N T A C T Y O U R L O C A L A G E N T T O B O O KT H E M I N I M A G - A U G U S T E D I T I O N

WHO YOU’LL BE CRUISING WITH:While river cruises can be enjoyed by people ofall ages, they generally appeal to people moreadvanced in age, baby boomers. Many rivercruise lines allow children aboard their ships, although they may have age restrictions in placeand usually there isn't much for kids to do. Themakeup of a liner can include people of a widerange of nationalities, but more often than not, guests come from English-speaking countries.THE BEST TIMES TO GO:Whether you choose to travel in the on-season orthe off-season, you’ll be able to gain a deepcultural experience in each of your destinations. In the spring and summer, you may witness localoutdoor events and lively activities that onlyoccur during the warmer months of the year. Cooler weather in the fall may mean you’ll runinto fewer people in the streets of cities and portsyou visit, which will allow you to take your timeand get a closer look at sites that interest youwithout feeling rushed or crowded. And in thewinter season, you’ll be delighted by festiveChristmas markets and enchanted by the holidaytraditions and celebrations of the locals.WHAT SHOULD YOU PACK:Given that weather will be variable depending onwhere your river cruise takes you, bringing alongboth warm and light clothes is wise. Even duringwarm months, there is wind on the rivers, so it’sbest to plan for layers even if the weather is hot. Additionally, you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking,so bring along comfortable shoes. Lastly, packsome dressier clothes in case you attend a formalevent while visiting one of your cruisedestinations.HOW THEY DIFFER FROM OCEAN CRUISES:Although river cruises and ocean cruises share anumber of similarities, there are also various -and considerable - differences between the two. For one, ocean liners are bigger and offer morestateroom accommodations on average.Appropriately, they’re able to host significantlymore guests. The smaller scale of river shipsmeans fewer guests, but more opportunities toget to know fellow travellers, which often lead tolifelong friendships.C O N T A C T Y O U R L O C A L A G E N T T O B O O KT H E M I N I M A G - A U G U S T E D I T I O N

In contrast to ocean cruises that may includemultiple sea days, you will rarely experience a fullday of sailing on a river cruise. Typically, guestswill awake each morning to find themselves in anew port. With river cruising, you can also enjoyan ever-changing mural of breathtaking sceneryfrom your ship, so the journey itself becomes partof your discovery. For those without sea legs, river cruises have theadvantage of smooth trekking, shallow watersand the gift of land that’s always in sight. Lastly, most river cruises offer inclusive value, meaningyour Wi-Fi, water, alcohol and includedexcursions are covered in the price. However, ocean cruises tend to offer more upscaleamenities, like fitness centres, multiple diningoptions and a variety of live entertainment.WHO WOULD ENJOY A RIVER CRUISE:River cruises are great for everyone, especiallythose desiring a more relaxed and intimate formof travel. Individuals who've never stepped footon a ship before will enjoy the relative ease of ariver-bound trip with little chance of seasickness. Furthermore, with a focus on cultural explorationof locations, river cruises are perfect for thosewith a curiosity about art and history, or a generalinterest in travel. Every river is unique and each tells a differentstory - not only of the countries through which itflows, but also of its locks, canals, scenery andbridges. Further more, of the 20,000people that actually step foot onAntarctica - there are a handful of crazypeople that are foolish (or as weconsider it, blessed) enough to camp atthe bottom of the world. We are two of those people.Being able to say that not only have youslept on Antarctica under the stars, butyou’ve done it with nothing but you, your sleeping bag, tent and a large sackis one hell of a camping experience. It had already been a day to end alldays. We had survived the Polar Plunge, paddled through brash ice andmesmerising scenery, landed on theshore to visit a penguin colony, seenorca’s and ended the afternoon with azodiac cruise to the stunning glaciers. It had the makings of a perfect day andnow we were topping it off with theultimate adventure. We weren’t the only crazy people inAntarctica however and together, we ARCTIC ADVENTUREtook up the challenge of making itthrough the night in sub zero weatherwhile sleeping in the snow on theshores of Paradise Bay.To have been able to do something thatvery few people in this world haveopportunity to do was sensational. We feel incredibly grateful to be one of thevery few lucky people to be invited to sleep on the frozen continent with theteam from HX expeditions .

The crunch of the snow is akind of magic, putting you under an icyspell you won’t want to escape from.Up until now all of our landings had beenon islands around the Antarctic peninsula. ANTARCTIC EXPERIENCEAnd although we had seen plenty of ice, penguins, whales and seals, we couldhave easily called everything so far an“Antarctic experience,”But of course, we wanted that truecontinental landing - to set foot on thepeninsula itself, and not just step foot onthe peninsula, but to do so after our firstnight camping. The “purists” among us (myself included)would not have had it any other way, sohere we are, our continental landing - and our official 7th out of 7 continent!Due to the highly glaciated terrain ofAntarctica, there are only a small handfulof locations where you can actually make acontinental landing and, as with allthings in Antarctica, visiting these issubject to weather and ice conditions. EPIC FROZEN EXPANSESAntarctica is more than just a place –it's a dream for generations oftravellers who have had theirimaginations fired by its epic frozenexpanses. This is truly an ultimate bucket listdestination - would you step foot onthe fabled 7th Continent?LANDING

C O N T A C T Y O U R L O C A L A G E N T T O B O O KT H E M I N I M A G - A U G U S T E D I T I O NHOW LONG WILL YOUR CRUISE LAST?It’s important to consider how much timeyou have available when you’re deciding ona ship to book. Keep in mind that you’llhave to add time if you plan to fly to a port.Ifyou’re new to long cruises or you’re pressedfor time, you might want to book asegment of a world cruise. This optionallows you to get a taste of the worldcruising experience for only a part of thevoyage. Once you’ve returned home, youcan decide whether you’d like to take thefull trip next time.WHAT SIZE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?Small, boutique cruise ships carry only a fewhundred passengers, creating a moreintimate and relaxing experience. Theirsmall size allows them to pull in close toport cities, so you’ll have more time toexplore the shore. Because there are fewerpeople on board, you’ll build a deep senseof camaraderie with your fellow passengersas well as the crew, gaining morepersonalised service.Midsize ships provide a similar elegantexperience to small cruises. These shipspresent a middle ground between smallships and large ocean liners.Large cruises can hold hundreds orthousands of passengers. Although theyprovide many diverse amenities, they’re toolarge to dock near port cities. If you take alarge ship, independent sightseeing canget difficult - and costly.Mega liners the largest cruise ship, canaccommodate thousands of passengers pervoyage. These massive ships offer moreamenities, such as on-ship casinos andfitness centres. But, due to their size, megacruises can feel overwhelming for thoselooking for a relaxing getaway.Check duration of port stays: How long willyou stay in each port city? You’ll gain anidea of how long you have in eachdestination to prioritise what you want toshop for, see or do.Look at excursions: Getan idea of what excursions you can sign upfor early so you can ensure your spot.
