POLICE OFFICER DUTY LIMITATION INSURANCEWhat is Duty Limitation coverage?This coverage pays a monthly benefit for a set period when an officer is limited from participating in additional work for compensation, which they otherwise would usually be allowed to perform. Benefits are paid directly to the officer and can help protect their family from the financial challenges that can come from being limited in theirability to earn extra income.What are some reasons for limiting the ability to perform extra duties?Qualifying statuses an officer could experience include administrative duty, administrative leave and indefinite suspension. Examples of these statuses may include:How does the coverage work?Duty Limitation Insurance pays a monthly benefit when an officer is placed on administrative duty, indefinite suspension or administrative leave, and is limited in their ability to earn extra income from additional duties. There, he had a reputation for being a hardworking family man, who worked security at a local club in his off hours. One night, Alex was involved in a high-speed chase that ended with him discharging his weapon. Per department policy, he was immediately placed on paid administrative leave. Fortunately, Alex carried Duty Limitation coverage through his association, which helped him to continue paying his bills and taking care of his family for the 3 months he was unable to work his security job.Elected coverage: Elimination period:$2,000 per month 15 daysTotal benefits paid: $5,000Exclusions & limitationsThis policy does not cover any loss for a duty status change resulting from: Absences due to disabilities, including any medical leave of absences, the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), jury duty or vacations; • An intentionally self-inflicted injury; • Attempted suicide, whether sane or insane; •Events incurred prior to the effective date of coverage; • Active duty in the armed forces of any nation or international governmental authority or units auxiliary thereto or the National Guard or similar government organizations; • Voluntarily taking drugs which federal law prohibits dispensing without a prescription, including sedatives, narcotics, barbiturates, amphetamines or hallucinogens, unless the drug is taken as prescribed or administered by a licensed physician; • Committing or attempting to commit a felony; • Participating in an illegal occupation or activity; • Falsifying, misrepresenting or omitting information for the benefit of one’s self or others; • Misusing or misrepresenting one’s position or authority; • Mental or nervous disorders; • Job limitations due to pregnancy.Crafting a customized planCreating a plan can be done in three easy steps. The officer simply:1. Sets an elimination period of 15 or 30 days,2. Chooses a monthly benefit amount of $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000, and3. NFOPU CONSORTIUMThe National Fraternal Order of Police University (NFOPU) is a consortiumof colleges and universities that provides members of the National FOPwith varied learning programs. These programs include both traditionaland nontraditional forums. The formation of the NFOPU allows FOPmembers the ability to take courses that will accommodate the uniquerequirements of a working law enforcement officer's schedule.
