EXPECTATIONSWho participates in Maymester? All Middle School students are required to participate in a Maymester course. When does Maymester take place? The dates of Maymester are May 14-22, 2025. There are six primary days of class during this mini semester for each on-campus course, plus the final day, May 22, which includes our Maymester Expo, a celebration of learning.Does Maymester follow a regular school day schedule?Maymester days are academic days in our school calendar, and it is important to be on time each day, arriving no later than 8:40 a.m. The Woodward Academy Middle School attendance policy applies during this time. Please do not plan any unnecessary absences that will take you away from your course. Woodward Academy Middle School cannot accommodate students who arrive after their field trip has already left campus. Most courses with off-campus experiences will return to campus by the late bus departure. If a course will arrive later, parents will be notified in advance in order to make arrangements for pick up.How will this course be graded? To ensure a safe and non-competitive space, every Maymester course will be graded Pass/Fail. All students will produce a cumulative project, reflective of their experience and acquired knowledge. The completion of the project will serve as an assessment for the course. At the end of the term, students will participate in a celebration of learning to share their work with peers and the Woodward Academy community. This exhibit of Maymester projects takes place during the Maymester Expo.7
COURSE SELECTIONHow will students register for a course? In early January, students will have one to two weeks to choose five courses in which they have an interest. Students should consider opportunities that they are passionate about or that are outside of their comfort zones so that they may engage deeply in the learning experience. Students with commitments to teams/ activities outside of Woodward should not choose a course that will conflict with those commitments. Once a student decides on five choices, they will enter their choices into a form. Students should not select a course more than once. They must choose five different courses, or their entry will be invalid. If a student does not enroll on time and/or correctly, they will be assigned to a course. Students will be notified of their Maymester placement in early February. After this official notice, students will not be able to make changes. Is there an added cost?Because Woodward Academy believes that Maymester is an integral part of our educa-tional program, Maymester courses are covered by your family’s tuition. Exceptions include domestic or international travel experiences as well as potential souvenir purchases on field trips.8Courses include one or more of these themes:PurposeInspiring change and finding solutions (social awareness and responsibility)PassionPursuing or discovering a passionPersonalGrowthEncouraging personal well-being and healthy lifestyles

27O Maymest ExpiencesTEACHERS“Our Maymester course, Minor League Baseball Experience, was a fantastic experience for the teachers and students. The ability to attend the baseball games, meet with team executives, and enjoy the atmosphere made for a fantastic and educational opportunity.”Chris Hardin“Trains, Planes, and Automobiles: Exploring the World of Transportation provided students an opportunity to gain hands-on mechanical experience that will prove useful in the real world, and it was great getting to know students outside of the typical classroom atmosphere!”Jonathan Lee“The Grand Slam Tennis Experience was beyond what we had hoped, planned, and dreamed! The hands-on activities and hard work throughout the week culminated in our students teaching the Lower School students in a tennis clinic-like format. Seeing our stu-dents become ‘the teacher’ was evidence of purpose, passion, and personal growth. This was transformational! Also, the student-teacher relationships created in Maymester have con-tinued into this school year.”Debra E. Smith“Maymester was a great experience for the students and teachers. I had a great time being a trip leader for the Up, Down, and All Around - Central Florida Stem Tour because I could interact with new students who I did not teach and were interested in Disney, SeaWorld, and NASA. The students learned about how science was connected to all the main attractions of Orlando!”Leslie Widener STUDENTS“Last year I did the Sports Management 101 Maymester. It was very fun and energetic. We also got to visit some arenas and stadiums such as Mercedes Benz Stadium.”Bobby Barnette ’29“I had a great Maymester experience; I traveled internationally to Costa Rica. Not only was it fun, but it was also very informative. I learned a lot about the history of the country and many other things. This was a great opportunity filled with multiple amazing experiences.”Ishani Bhat ’29“I loved my Healthy Helpings Maymester. It was a blast. I had great friends and the field trips were fun. I learned how to make ravioli and a pita bread sandwich. I loved being in a group with my friends and being able to cook and have fun with them.”Paige Maiberger ’29“I really enjoyed my time in my Dungeons & Dragons Maymester because our teachers were really interesting, and I found the Mayme-ster was super fun and engaging overall. Get-ting to hear and talk about the history of D&D really fascinated me. One thing I learned from my Maymester experience was that it’s super important to add colorful adjectives and verbs whenever you’re telling a story. It’s also import-ant to make interesting characters with their own motivations and personalities. Getting to play D&D with some of my peers was also really enjoyable.”Kevin Choice ’29
