RETHINKING ASSISTED LIVING As poets songwriters and authors have helped us see over the centuries love is a powerful motivator It is a complex emotion that s both the source of our greatest joys and our deepest pain It can guide us to do what s right and fool us into making decisions we regret And while we never break IUHH IURP ORYH V LQ XHQFH ZH GR JHW EHWWHU DW PDQDJLQJ LW ZLWK age We learn to keep it more balanced with non emotions like clear thinking and logic Again it s nothing new to any of us to hear all this But it s important to keep it in mind when we discuss an emotion heavy subject we all have to face at some point in our lives assisted living How do we balance love with logic when making decisions on behalf of our aged DQG LQ UP IDPLO PHPEHUV When it comes to family members love can easily lead to feelings of misplaced guilt This is not a healthy mindset because it leads to decisions we think are based on their happiness but are really more about what makes us feel better This is often the reason for deciding to take care of our loved one at home as opposed to say a facility designed and staffed by professionals who have actual knowledge of what our loved ones require both emotionally and physically Or to put it another way a place designed around the clear thinking realities of what they really need and very often what they really want 16 Michigan Seniors Guide Spring 2023 So now that we have shifted the focus to logic let s build on it a little more What exactly do you look for when shopping IRU VXFK D IDFLOLW DVLFDOO LW V HYHU WKLQJ RX ZRXOG ZDQW to give them at home in your care You would want them to feel safe and secure day and night in the event of any unforeseen medical emergencies You would want a regular program of daily personal care maintained like bathing grooming and dressing You would want to make sure their living space is clean their laundry done their meals prepared on time You would want to keep them socially active with peers and friends And above all you would want to promote a sense of dignity and purpose in their life Can we agree at this point that unless you possess extremely unusual circumstances you simply cannot meet WKHVH IXQGDPHQWDO QHHGV ZLWK KRPH FDUH W V QRERG V fault There s no place for guilt misplaced or otherwise It s just a fact of life that many of us need to face and frankly rethink Ask yourself Wouldn t your deep love for an aged SDUHQW EH EHWWHU VHUYHG E GRLQJ WKH UHVHDUFK DQG QGLQJ a facility that meets the real needs you can t provide at KRPH HOO WKH JRRG QHZV LV WKH UH RXW WKHUH Guilt is the enemy of peace of mind says John Toupin Administrator at The Rivers a Michigan based assisted living facility Before you commit to a facility we encourage asking all the questions that matter and listening for all the right answers Tour the facilities Observe the activities and get a feel for the overall spirit of the place Make sure the staff are real pros who genuinely care Yes love is a powerful motivator But rethinking assisted living isn t a matter of excluding love it s a matter of putting LW WR EHWWHU XVH KDW FRXOG EH PRUH ORJLFDO WKDQ WKDW

Frank Fedel president of the Southeastern Michigan Pickleball Assoc Multigenerational pickleball offers fitness fun for everyone by Brian Christopher Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States and with good reason It is perhaps as close to a perfect sport for people of all ages that you can get But don t take it from the millions who flock to their local courts to play this mishmash of tennis pingpong racquetball and badminton in singles or doubles matches Frank Fedel is more than the current president of the Southeastern Michigan Pickleball Association He s a professor at Eastern Michigan University with degrees in exercise physiology and biomechanics There are recommendations for adults to get moderate level physical activity and pickleball actually fits that category based on what they ve looked at so far Fedel said It s not taxing for people who are older or maybe not particularly highly fit right now and yet it can get your heart rate up to a reasonable range where you re actually doing a little bit for yourself Fedel referenced a short term study that showed a positive result relative to cholesterol levels While participation did not lower total cholesterol the level of exercise involved in playing pickleball did appear to raise the good cholesterol number of participants in the study 18 Michigan Seniors Guide Spring 2023 But there s more to the story about why pickleball is good healthy fun for everyone Cardiovascular fitness is one aspect Another aspect you want to consider is as people are getting older you want to consider the amount of wear and tear on the joints Fedel said Something that s very vigorous will quite frequently also be challenging for people who are older in terms of to use a colloquialism beating up on your joints We have people on our leagues who are in their 70s or 80s who play pickleball Fedel added It s a lifelong activity and it s one of those sports that s kind of multigenerational Fedel 63 has played pickleball for 10 years now He played racquetball before that and also got into inline skating which was for a time the country s fastest growing sport As an exercise physiologist I knew it wasn t going to be the fastest growing sport forever You don t see 60 year olds rollerblading It s not a lifetime activity Fedel said But that s exactly what pickleball is because of its adaptable pace of play moderate intensity low impact and accessibility to people of all ages and all skill levels This sport is really unique There s never been something that I can think of like this where you can get so many people interested in a sport that they re going to continue for 30 or 40 years That just hasn t happened This is crazy good for you because it doesn t beat you up It doesn t wear you out Fedel said Although if you want a good workout you can certainly make it hard You can play singles and you re going to work up a sweat just like you re out jogging or more because you re moving in fits and bursts You re doing fast activity and then you get a little bit of a break then fast again It can be very challenging and yet you can make it accommodating for people that are out there to have fun WHERE TO PLAY Check USA Pickleball s Places2Play website at places2play org to search for games and facilities by name state and city You can read what other players say about the locations and there is an interactive map showing places to play in your area For more information about the Southeastern Michigan Pickleball Association visit southeastmichiganpba org For much more about the growing sport of pickleball including its history how to play the full rules and tournaments across the country visit usapickleball org

Carl Marlinga ready to lead Michigan s Elder Abuse Task Force by Brian Christopher On Dec 22 Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Carl Marlinga will lead the state s Elder Abuse Task Force as a special assistant to the attorney general He brings decades of experience as an attorney prosecutor and judge with him As Marlinga prepares to step into this new and important role in 2023 he agreed to take a few questions from the Michigan Seniors Guide Meet Ret Judge Carl Marlinga Age 76 Graduate of the University of Detroit Graduate of the University of Michigan Law School Macomb County Prosecuting Attorney 1985 2004 Attorney in private practice Macomb County Probate Court Judge 2013 2016 Macomb County Circuit Court Judge 2017 2022 Sup pport to be a more Confide f dent nt Careegive ve r IIff y you re ou re c caring aring ffor or a lloved oved one with o ne w ith a serious serious illness illness and and want w ant to to keep keep them them at at home home Hospice Michigan can help H ospice of M i c h ig a n c an h e lp Hospice Michigan s expert H ospice of M ichigan s e xp e r t provides tteam eam p rovides guidance g uid a n c ce e training tr aining and and emotional emotional help ssupport uppor t to to h elp you you be be a PRUH VNLOOHG DQG FRQ GHQW P RUH VNLOOHG DQG FRQ GHQW caregiver c areg egiver a att home home Proving P roving c compassionate ompassionate care omp care and an a nd ssupport upport since since 1978 1978 You ve had a long career as a prosecutor attorney and judge Tell us about your newest title and what you bring to the table as special assistant to the attorney general Yes I have had a long career in public service but I regard this appointment as one of the most meaningful opportunities ever presented to me to serve the people of the State of Michigan Vulnerable adults of any age and particularly those of advanced years are often the target of unscrupulous predators who take advantage of their trust Even more shocking sometimes the very people whom courts appoint to assist persons who have become incapacitated take advantage of them by embezzling their funds stealing their property or grossly overcharging the protected person s accounts to pay for guardianship services I have dealt with such predators in individual cases as a prosecutor and as a judge The Attorney General has now allowed me to apply my experience to lead a talented team to fight these injustices statewide As a senior yourself it must be extremely rewarding to be equipped with the experience 24 Michigan Seniors Guide Spring 2023 the professional tools and the office to help protect all seniors in Michigan How does that feel At 76 years of age I am indeed honored to help in this effort I appreciate the trust that Attorney General Nessel has placed in me Choosing a person of my age also shows that the Attorney General recognizes that elderly people are still able to contribute as much or more as they did in their younger years As Senator Robert Kennedy said Youth is not a time of life but a state of mind As a probate judge I once appointed an 84 year old man to be the guardian and conservator of his 64 year old brother People become vulnerable in different ways and at different times in their lives You ve seen a lot in terms of elder abuse crimes as a prosecutor and a judge Are seniors more at risk now than ever and what is the biggest threat to their safety and security Seniors and other vulnerable adults have always been the target of predators The internet has made it easier for predators to find targets to victimize and has made it easier to entice people into

Marlinga Cont fraudulent scams I find that the most heinous and disgusting crimes are those where the perpetrator uses a charitable or religious message to gain control over a victim In one case a person advertised on the internet that contributions to her charity would make it possible for her to help thousands of people and that she would offer special powerful prayers for anyone who would make a donation When donations came in this criminal would then seek out the donors and try to establish a personal relationship with them Once that relationship was established the predator was able to gain control over bank accounts in one case embezzling over 265 000 before the crime was discovered What are the most notable accomplishments of the EATF and what s next for it under your leadership These have been very busy and successful years for the Elder Abuse Task Force The most significant legislative accomplishment to date has been the passage of the Financial Exploitation Prevention Act effective September 26 2021 requiring financial institutions to report suspected financial exploitation of vulnerable members customers The Act also allows financial institutions to freeze transactions and assets in certain circumstances The EATF has also created a standard reporting form for law enforcement agencies throughout the state to investigate crimes against the elderly and other vulnerable adults Excellent training videos and case studies have also been made available to law enforcement agencies to assist in the investigation and prosecution of these crimes Additionally bills will be introduced in the legislature providing for better supervision of guardians and conservators and offering better easier and less costly alternatives to guardianship The Attorney General s Financial Crimes Division has also led the way in investigating and charging predators in several high profile cases The Attorney General and every member of the Elder Abuse Task Force is dedicated to protecting seniors from physical emotional and financial abuse and making sure that every person has the freedom to make his or her own informed choices In those circumstances where a person s abilities may be impaired we want to make sure that any intervention in that person s life is as little as possible for the least amount of time as necessary while fully respecting the person s abilities rights dignity and independence What is the single most important thing family members can do to help protect their aging loved ones from those looking to prey on them in their golden years The single most important thing for family members is to stay in constant contact with aging loved ones Isolation is the key to exploitation Sometimes an elderly person is wise enough to suspect a scam but invites the person into his or her life anyway because some human contact is better than no human contact at all It takes a village to raise a child The same communal support should be there to protect and nourish us at the other end of our life span as well NO EXCUSE FOR ELDER ABUSE REPORT ABUSE NEGLECT EXPLOITATION ABUSE Harm or threatened harm to an adult s health or welfare caused by another person NEGLECT The inability or failure to provide adequate food shelter clothing medical care etc EXPLOITATION The misuse of an adult s funds property or personal dignity e g humiliation objectification degradation dehumanization by another person 26560 Van Dyke Center Line MI 586 754 2464 George Rafaidus Licensed Funeral Director George and Charlene Rafaidus info thefordfuneralhome com Michigan Seniors Guide Spring 2023 25

New study shows everyone hates using passwords but generational differences persist Most people are well aware of the shortcomings of passwords Generally they just don t deliver the level of security and convenience you expect They can be weak prone to theft and loss and just a major source of frustration In fact a recent Aware study suggests these levels of frustration have hit a whole new threshold Uniformly across age demographics research shows that around 30 percent of users are incredibly frustrated when they have to undergo a password reset process And while people of all ages are similarly irritated with the length and complexity requirements of passwords those in the rush hour of life generally considered to be 25 45 report higher levels of frustration than any other age group Age Matters This study also reveals some generational differences with regards to acceptance of new authentication options such as biometrics Compared to members of the Baby Boomer generation millennials and respondents in generations X and Z are more than twice as likely to be comfortable adopting biometrics The younger respondents were the more willing they would be to implement facial recognition to protect their accounts almost double the number of 18 to 24 year olds indicated a willingness to use the technology compared to Baby Boomers Big On Biometrics Despite these differences people as a whole seem receptive to using biometric authentication Over half regardless of age bracket said they d replace passwords with biometrics for activities such as ecommerce online banking and social media Almost half of respondents said they d also do so for online government services Additionally across all age brackets the majority of users said the ability to sign up for a new service with their biometric identity made them more likely to use that service So what s it going to take to get everyone to do away with outdated passwords and get on board with biometrics Public education goes a long way it s important to ensure that every generation understands the benefits and protections around this kind of data especially as biometric security becomes more and more commonplace In many cases biometric data is deleted within milliseconds after being used Even in cases where it s stored images are broken down into bits so small that hackers wouldn t be able to make a composite image to access personal information And of course commercial services can t use your biometrics without consent While there aren t many issues that can prompt agreement over generational divides it s pretty clear that passwords are a universal source of frustration It s hoped as data indicates those frustrations will subside as biometric authentication becomes a more popular and convenient option For further facts and tips visit www aware com Home Transitioning with an Expert Now is the Time to Consider a Move Your Seniors Real Estate Specialist SRES Ready to Help You Make Life changing Decisions Don t Just List Your Home with Anyone List with Someone Who Knows Your Neighborhood Cheryl Parisi New Construction Luxury Custom Homes Complimentary Staging Complete Moving Services Relocation Services FREE Home Warranty with Your Listing Customized Plans to Meet All of Your Real Estate Needs Realtor ABR SRES CRS 2022 Top Selling Producer Serving Metro Detroit Area For OVER 27 Years 248 733 5806 Parisirealty gmail com www parisirealty com Call Me Today I am the KEY to all of your real estate needs Experience Knowledge Integrity 30 Michigan Seniors Guide Spring 2023 210 W University Suite 4 Rochester MI 48307
