PAGE 4News From Melling And WraytonPARISH COUNCILThe Annual Parish Meeting and Parish Council AGM took place on Tuesday 14th May 2025. Sandra Towers was re-elected as Chair and Andrew Stevenson re-elected to Vice-Chair. Phill Howson, Graham Fawcett and Mary Jackson will continue to manage “outdoor matters” such as mowing, footpaths and biodiversity. The upkeep of village notice boards was discussed and quotes for repair and replacement will be gained and discussed in the July meeting. The Chair will attend the City Council seminar this month.CHAIRMAN’S REPORT MAY 2024 - MAY 2025Councillors have spent much time on:“Outdoor” matters such as Footpaths and Bridleways and the general upkeep and maintenance of Parish outdoor spaces:• The experimental “pollinator patch” on Moorside Triangle opposite the primary school was initially put in place for 5 years, this time is now up and it has been decided to extend the wild ower area on a permanent basis. Lancaster City Council will manage this.• The PC have started a footpath survey of all paths in the parish with photos and what3words listings for location purposes. It is hoped that this will be a working document where parishioners can report problems. The council will use this document to identify areas where PROW and biodiversity grants should be used.• The role of mowing operative has been updated, with a new contractor employed. Whilst the role of lengthsman has for the moment been disbanded. Any jobs requiring attention will be undertaken by suitable contractors employed on a job-by-job basis. To help with this, a list tasks needed/jobs undertaken is being compiled hopefully this will help with future planning.• The damaged tree on the Green has been inspected and a tree surgeon appointed to ll out the necessary paperwork and undertake any permitted work.Transport:• After the RTA last summer the PC has discussed road use, including speed, speed monitoring, parking, with little progress being made so far.• The Chair and Vice-Chair met with a representative of SUSTRANS and discussed the planning of the Lune Cycle Route from Morecambe to Ingleton. This is very much at a preplanning stage.

PAGE 12News From Melling And WraytonMELLING ST WILFRID CE PRIMARY SCHOOL‘FOR THE LOVE OF LEARNING, FRIENDSHIP AND FAITH.’This week our Y5 an6 pupils have spent an action packed few days on a residential trip to Edinburgh with Mrs Martin and Mrs Ip. We set off from Lancaster station where we met and boarded the 8:10am train to Edinburgh Waverley. We had everything we needed for the 3 days in a back pack so that we did not have to spend the rst and last day carrying around luggage. As we were approaching Edinburgh a broken down train on the track delayed our journey a little but meant we had time to tuck into our lunch at 10:30am! We arrived at the train station just before 11am and walked straight to Dynamic Earth in the Holyrood area of Edinburgh. We started with a planetarium lm and talk about the history of the universe and then went on a museum tour of the history of time complete with earthquakes and icebergs. It was fascinating. Our Dynamic Earth tour was completed with a workshop about climate change which was very interesting and the knowledge will be put to good use back in the classroom. Our next venue was the Chocolatarium- a denite highlight of the trip. All the children got the chance to make their own chocolate bars – either milk or plain chocolate, they chose the moulds and toppings and ensured it was tempered. It was set in the large fridges and we received each child’s beautifully packaged at the end of our tour. After making the chocolate we had a history lesson about chocolate but got to taste each era of chocolate from early chocolate to new avours and from different countries – it was delicious and we now know lots of information about chocolate making. Finally we learned about the rainforests and cocoa bean farming which was nished off with a drink of pure molten chocolate- delicious! After chocolate eating we walked to the Central Youth Hostel where we were staying and had our evening meal there. After dinner we went for a chance to unwind in the park near the youth Hostel before bed.

Page 13

PAGE 13News From Melling And WraytonThe next day we had breakfast at 7:30am in the youth hostel and then headed to the Royal Mile to visit Camera Obscura. The children discovered there are a lot of steps in Edinburgh! We went straight to the top of Camera Obscura from where there is a magnicent Birds Eye view of Edinburgh. We then went in to see the Victorian pinhole camera which shows close up images from the top of the building of all the people walking down below using only mirror and lens technology. There are then 5 oors of optical illusions and a maze of mirrors which are only for the brave!Edinburgh castle was our next stop with planets of chances to see the cannons and walk the castle walls. We saw lots of guards with their elaborate uniforms. After a picnic lunch in the castle we went to the Museum of Scotland which is housed in a beautiful building with many natural and world history exhibits. The children completed a scavenger hunt and explored the whole museum. Next came Mary King close- Edinburgh’s underground street buried under Edinburgh city chambers which gave us a very realistic insight into what life would have been like during the 1600s and was quite gruesome. After the horrors of life long ago the children were glad to return to the present day and visit Pizza Express which we took over for dinner on the Royal mile. Lots of pizzas and ice cream later we headed back to the youth hostel for another game of tig in the park followed by straight to sleep. Our nal day involved another trip to the park followed by an interesting walk with a bagpipe serenade to the national gallery. The children were in awe and wonder at the size and scale of the works of art. They were allowed to make their own sketches looking at the techniques the great artists use. We then went to the city art gallery where we looked at printing techniques in art before a quick visit to Princess Gardens to eat a picnic lunch before catching our train home. We certainly packed a lot into our 3 day visit and we were all exhausted when we got home but had made so many memories that will last a lifetime. If anyone is planning a visit to Edinburgh please ask a Y5 or 6 pupil, they will be able to give you lots of information!Mrs Fiona Ip, Headteacher

PAGE 14News From Melling And WraytonINGREDIENTSFor the Cake• 300 g unsalted butter• 300 g caster sugar• 350 g self raising our• 6 medium eggs• 250 g summer berriesFor the Coulis• 240 g summer berries• 80 g caster sugarMETHOD1) Preheat oven to 180C/160C Fan, line two deep 8”/20cm tins with parchment paper. 2) Add your butter, sugar, self-raising our and eggs to a mixer bowl beat together until smooth. Fold through the fruit and split between the two tins. 3) Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes, or until baked through. A skewer should come out clean, and the cake should bounce back when gently pressed. 4) Once baked, leave to cool in the tin for 20-30 minutes, and then remove carefully and cool fully on a wire rack, remove the parchment paper when cool. To make the Coulis: Chop the strawberries to a similar size to the raspberries. Add fruit to a pan, add the sugar then heat on a medium heat. Stir it often so the sugar doesn’t catch and mash the fruit down as it softens. Blitz the mixture until it’s smooth then pass it through a sieve to get rid of any seeds/lumps. Leave it to cool fully. For the Buttercream: Beat room temperature unsalted butter for about 5 minutes so it is really soft and smooth. Add in the icing sugar a little at a time and beat again. Add in 3 tablespoons of coulis and beat until again. For the Decoration: Put your rst layer of your cake onto a plate, and cover with half of the buttercream. Add the second layer of cake, and top with the rest of the buttercream. Decorate the cake with the berries and serve more coulis on the side.COOKING CORNER ... SUMMER FRUIT CAKE For the Buttercream• 200 g unsalted butter• 400 g icing sugar• 3 tbsp coulisFor the Decoration• Strawberries• Raspberries• Red Currants• Extra Fruit Coulis
