PAGE 12News From Melling And WraytonMELLING ST WILFRID CE PRIMARY SCHOOL‘FOR THE LOVE OF LEARNING, FRIENDSHIP AND FAITH.’This year we opted for an early June sports day to attempt to catch the sunny weather. Despite a downpour the night before we were all set for a day of sunny sporting action. In the morning we held the eld events. These included javelin, shot putt, long distance, long jump and agility jumping. The children were split into groups for each event and scored points for themselves and for their team. We had 3 teams in school; red dragons, blue whales and yellow dynamites. The children had all made banners supporting their team. After the morning events all points were calculated and after lunch it was time for the races. A good audience had gathered on the eld with parents, grandparents and aunts and uncles all bringing their camping chairs and setting up along the sidelines. The children paraded onto the eld with their banners and sat in their teams. Our sports afternoon always starts with an obstacle race devised and demonstrated by our Y6 leavers. This was an exciting race with a penalty shoot out at the end.
PAGE 13News From Melling And WraytonWe then moved onto at races starting out with Reception and getting faster and faster as we moved up the year groups to Y6. The staff at the nish line awarding positions had to keep clear and watch carefully! We continued our afternoon with the traditional egg and spoon and skipping races and replaced the sack race (due to nibbled sacks) with a bean bag race. Our nal school event was the relay in which the children showed great teamwork. We then opened up the races for a Dad’s egg and spoon which was a packed event and highly contested. The Mum’s took a little encouragement from their children at rst but then we had a full turn out for a very speedy egg and spoon event. Finally for the afternoon we were joined by preschool who showed us their throwing and running skills. Our sports stars of the future.Thank you to everyone who took part make it a joyful afternoon for all involved. The team points winners were close but the red dragons took the victory. Junior boy star trophy for most points went to Myles Y6. Junior girl trophy for most points went to Isabelle Y6. Infant trophy for most points went to Leo Y1. Awards for sporting conduct – enthusiasm and team participation went to Joseph Y6 and Oliver Y1.WELL DONE EVERYONE- SUPER SPORTS! Mrs Fiona Ip, Headteacher

PAGE 16TUNSTALL WIAt the March meeting we were joined by our friends from Wennington & District WI to hear a fascinating talk from Hilary McCumiskey about her experiences making costumes for a northern ballet company. She brought along a selection of beautiful costumes and the evening closed with a buffet supper. In April local soap maker Jo Baker came and demonstrated how she makes her lovely soaps and in May Jack the Gardener came and gave us useful tips on how to keep our gardens looking lovely throughout the year. Also in May members enjoyed a superb meal at Avanti in Kirkby Lonsdale. At the June meeting retired MP Dr Michael Clarke had everyone in stitches as he related light hearted parliamentary anecdotes. Who could imagine politics could be so entertaining. Also in June we all looked forward to the annual garden party held at a member’s home. This is always a lovely event when husbands and partners are welcomed to a buffet and drinks.Tunstall WI meets at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of the month. In July we shall welcome back a favourite speaker, Mike Winstanley who will talk about 19th century industry in the Lune Valley.Visitors are always welcome. PAGE 22LUNESDALE PROBUS CLUBWe have had another excellent month with great talks and high levels of attendance: the two being not unrelated! We owe our thanks to Ian Porter for his tireless work as speakernder, a task he has worked on for a long time now.Our two talks this month have been linked by a military theme, but one of great contrast! First we were gripped by the life or death struggle to break the near total stranglehold that Nazi submarines had on British supply lines during World War Two. Thanks to the bravery of our mariners, both civil and military, and the improvements in aircraft and naval equipment, the genius of Admiral Max Horton was able to ensure not only the feeding of Great Britain but also the delivery of over whelming forces which were directly responsible for victory in 1945. And yet how few of us had even heard of him! I’m writing this on the day when the King’s Birthday honours are announced and am reecting on the ckleness of fame. Pop stars and TV presenters beware: your moment of glory may not last! The military theme was continued in our next talk by Pam Barker, former Head of Lancaster Girls Grammar School and current Constable of Lancaster Castle. Latest in a centuries long line of Keepers of the Keys, Pam is the rst female Constable, charged with the maintenance of this great symbol of royal power in the North. Nowadays there is little likelihood of military action but the tradition lives on. Pam spoke most entertainingly of her duties, her relationship with the staff of the Duchy of Lancaster and the responsibility of presenting the keys (large and ceremonial, rather than practical!) to the late Queen Elizabeth, a task she has recently repeated on the visit of His Majesty King Charles to Lancaster this month. Apparently Queen Elizabeth spent the night before her visit on the royal train in Carnforth sidings which she observed were very untidy!TALKS7th July: Philip Burley with an interactive talk on the history of Puzzles. 21st July: Brian Topping completing his entertaining stories of life as a customs ofcer, this time focussing on Mules and Minders! Intriguing! After that we have a break through August and meet again on the rst Monday in September, the 8th. Usual arrangements: 10.00 for 10.30 at Hornby Institute, friends, family, guests welcome as ever. Enjoy the Summer!John Poole, Secretary (07713827032)News From The Neighbours
