Established in 2021, the brand focuses on handmade, high-quality swimwear that combines style, sustainability, and inclusivity, and is enjoying great success and popularity. And what better place to photograph these lovely outfits than the inner city tropical oasis of Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau.Speaking of summer vibes, in May the poolside area of Banyan Tree Macau was completely taken over by Louis Vuitton for the pre-launch of the LV By the Pool FW24 women’s collection Pre-fall 24 drop 2 men’s collection, with a number of products exclusively available at the LV store at Galaxy Macau. In the world of art we check out the installation work of Wong Weng Cheong who is representing Macau at the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Art Biennale, with his piece Above Zobeide. We also speak with local director Oliver Fa whose latest mini-series Taste of Love aired on TDM recently. The series explores journeys of love and friendship, across time and culture, all focused around a family recipe for delicious Macanese cuisine. Another TV series, this time on Hong Kong’s TVB, Sinister Beings 2 wrapped up recently, and two episodes featured well-known Macau resident Reggie Martin playing the bad guy role in the show. We chat with him about the fun time he had on set. We also had the chance to immerse ourselves in the amazing high tech shows at Wynn’s Illuminarium, and we check out the impressive sculptures by contemporary Chinese artist Ren Zhe at new exhibition Legends of Chivalry at MGM Cotai.Looking for authentic French cuisine in the heart of Macau? Go no further than Le Bouchon which opened in January. Headed by long term Macau resident Bernard Peres and well-known French Chef Eve Duron, this cozy downtown restaurant serves up excellent Lyonnaise cuisine at great prices. And popping over to Italy, we enjoy some wonderful Prosecco served up by the Italian Chamber of Commerce at a special event at Terrazza Restaurant at Galaxy Macau. Recently, we had a sneak-peak at the futuristic Tesla Cybertruck when it paid a visit to Macau. It’s not available here just yet, but it’s still a lot of fun to see and talk about.In Home Affairs, José Carlos Pereira introduces us to his staggering collection of art pieces gathered up over his 30 years in Macau. And in Closing Story we learn about the fascinating history of one of the city’s most infamous buildings, Hotel Central, which recently reopened after extensive renovations. Spending his first days of life in a darkroom and being brought up on the road, he has previ-ously worked in Brazil, Portugal and Belgium, currently maintaining a studio in Macau. He studied Sculpture, Installation and Multimedia at the Facultyof Fine-Arts in Lisbon and the University of São Paulo in Brazil. In 2016 co-created the arts association “Republic of Arts of Coloane”, inaugurating the year with sculpture consultancy for the 5-year-long public art project “AnnoProject”. In 2017 opened the first photography oriented gallery “Casa do Povo” in Macau. From 2018 to 2022 was able to work between the artistic department of The House of Dancing Water theater and as an art consultant at the University of Macau, for the Review of Culture magazine, while also ex-hibiting regularly. MC MAY / JUN - 202429Myriam Cyr, a Canadian actress at the Royal National Theatre, was so enchanted when she first saw a play reading of Lettres d’une Religieuse Portugaise (in French) that she translated the five love letters into English in her spare time. She then asked a director friend to help her develop the English ver-sion of the play reading, which she was subsequently invited to perform at a cultural festival in New York. After the performance, an editor at a publishing house approached Cyr and asked her to write a book about the stories behind these moving letters. Cyr spent three years researching the relevant literature and exploring the social customs and po-litical situations of Portugal and France more than 300 years ago, and in 2007 published Letters of a Portuguese Nun (translated into Chinese by Zhong Yujue/ Chen Xiuyun, China: Nanjing University Press, 2009).In 1666, a Portuguese nun from a wealthy noble family met a charming French officer by chance, fell in love, was seduced and had a torrid affair. In 1669, five love letters allegedly written by the Portuguese nun to her lover were published in Paris, and the forbidden love story, with its passion and emo-tional intensity, immediately caused a great stir in France, with readers clamouring for copies. It even influenced later literary masters, becoming the in-spiration for the 19th-century British poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Sonnets from the Portuguese and the French novelist Stendhal’s The Red and the Black.But the most interesting question is: who was the real author of these powerful, timeless love let-ters? This has been debated for hundreds of years. It has even been suggested that the author was in fact the French translator Gabriel de Guilleragues (1628-1685), who allegedly forged them to curry favour with his patron, a countess, and make a small fortune. More than three hundred years later, the identity of the author is still shrouded in mystery, making it one of the most famous mysteries in liter-ary history.In Letters of a Portuguese Nun, Cyr confirmed through solid and detailed research that the author of the letters was in fact the Portuguese nun Marianna Alcoforado (1640-1723), and that the protagonist, the French officer Noël Bouton de Chamilly (1636-1715), did assist the Portuguese in their war against Spain. He was stationed in Mariana’s hometown of Beja from the beginning of 1666 until the end of 1667, and the five love letters were written between the end of 1667 (the first) and June 1668 (the last). By study-ing the many historical events, people, timelines, and places from three centuries ago, Cyr gradually uncov-ers the myth of one of the great literary masterpieces. With her theatrical expertise and superb writing, she tells us the story in such a subtle and touching way.It seems that in both non-fictional and fictional historical writing, the author must have the skills of a historian and a detective, as well as great imagination and creativity. 32MC MAY / JUN - 2024The 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Art Biennale, La Biennale di Venezia was inaugurated on April 20 and will run until November 24. Curated by Adriano Pedrosa, the title of this year’s exhi-bition is Foreigners Everywhere, a concept drawn from a series of works started in 2004 by the Paris-born and Palermo-based Claire Fontaine collective. The works consist of neon sculptures in different colours that render in a growing number of languages the words “Foreigners Everywhere”. The phrase comes, in turn, from the name of a Turin col-lective who fought racism and xenophobia in Italy in the early 2000s.“The expression Foreigners Everywhere has several meanings. First of all, wherever you go and wherever you are, you will always en-counter foreigners— they/we are everywhere. Secondly, that no matter where you nd yourself, you are always truly, and deep down inside, a foreigner,” explains Pedrosa.A guiding principle of the Art Biennale is to invite artists who have never participated in the International Exhibition before, and this year, one of those chosen artists is Macau artist Wong Weng Cheong who is presenting his large-scale installation art work Above Zobeide. MC MAY / JUN - 202433󵳨60屆威尼斯國際藝術雙年展於4月20日揭幕,展期將持續至11月24日。今屆雙年展大會總策展人為阿德利亞諾‧裴多沙(Adriano Pedrosa),主題是「處處是外人」(Foreigners Everywhere),靈感源自巴黎藝術家團體Claire Fontaine(2004年創立於巴黎,總部位於巴勒莫)創作的一系列作品,這些作品由不同顏色、構成多種語言字樣的霓虹燈雕塑組成,不斷用更多語言書寫「Foreigners Everywhere」。而盤根究底,「Foreigners Everywhere」來自於21世紀初與意大利的種族主義和仇外心理作鬥爭的一個都靈團體的名字。「處處是外人具有多重含義。首先,無論走到哪裏,無論身在何處,都會遇到外人——他們/我們無處不在。其次,無論身處何方,你在內心深處始終是一個真正的外人,」裴多沙解釋道。威尼斯雙年展的當中一個指導原則是邀請從未參加過這一盛事的藝術家。今年,澳門藝術家黃穎祥成功獲選,赴威尼斯展出大型裝置藝術作品《在佐貝伊德之上》。黃穎祥與策展人常嬋於4月初前往威尼斯進行佈展。展覽空間面積約100平方米,展出的藝術裝置和數字版畫作品風格獨特,作品中,貌似長腳羊的奇異生物居住於起伏的岩石丘陵之中。「今年雙年展的主題引起我們的深深共鳴,因為它反思的是流離失所的概念,」常嬋表示。「我們嘗試將這個裝置與藝術家以前展出過的與羊相關的作品聯繫起來。」策展人繼續解釋說,黃穎祥將自己投射於這些羊之中,長腳象徵著對天空和更高層次精神啟蒙的渴望。然而,矛盾的是,腳越長,長得越高,它們離自己的食物來源——草地就越來越遠,不得不開始挨餓。「這代表了一種精神上的流離失所,我認為很多人都有類似感覺,」常嬋說。「如果你是一個理想主義者,或者追求創造性的目標,就很難在現代社會中生活得很好。作為藝術家,黃穎祥也感受到這種邊緣化。」作品標題《在佐貝伊德之上》的靈感來自意大利作家伊塔洛·卡爾維諾(Italo Calvino)的名作《看不見的城市》。「在小說中,不同國家的男人們循著夢中的路徑前行,追求夢中見到的同一位女子,建立起了一座名為佐貝伊德的慾望之城。隨著時間的推移,這座城市吸引了越來越多追隨夢想和慾望的人,」常嬋解釋道。創作過程中,黃穎祥使用了包括ZBrush、Maya和SketchUp在內的多種軟件,然後將最終作品圖傳送至中國的一間工廠進行3D打印。「我們從去年11月開始著手開始創作。3D打印雖然昂貴,但如果以傳統方式創作雕塑的話,成本會更高。」目前為止,觀者對展覽的反響非常積極,這對藝術拍檔亦期待在未來幾個月迎接更多的訪客。「非常榮幸此次能代表澳門參加威尼斯國際藝術雙年展。對於我們來說,此次的參展經歷非常令人激動也很具有挑戰性,但幸運的是我們得到了來自各方的幫助使得展覽得以順利落地,」常嬋表示。「展覽在展出後收穫了來自世界各地觀眾的肯定和喜愛,感覺一切付出都值得了!我們非常感激有這樣的機會可以通過威尼斯雙年展和全球的觀眾產生連接,用這樣有意義的方式讓澳門的聲音得以被聽見。」“The title of this year’s exhibition really resonated with us because it reects on the idea of displacement,” says the curator Chang Chan. “We tried to connect this installation with some of the artist’s previous works which also featured these sheep.”The curator goes on to explain that Wong Weng Cheong projects himself into these sheep, with their long legs representing a desire to reach for the sky and attain a higher level of spiritual enlightenment. However, paradoxically, as they grow taller, they get further and further away from the grassland that is their source of food, so they begin to starve.“This represents a kind of spiritual displacement, which I think a lot of people feel. If you are an idealist or if you are pursuing something creative, it is difcult to live properly in this society sometimes,” notes the curator. “As an artist, Wong Weng Cheong also feels a sense of this marginalised lifestyle.” The title of the work Above Zobeide is inspired the famous novel Invisible Cities by Italian writer Italo Calvino. “In the novel, Zobeide is basically a city of desire established by a group of men who are searching for a woman who they saw in their dreams. And over time, the city attracts more and more people who are also following their dreams and desires,” Chang Chan explains. To create the project, Wong Weng Cheong used a variety of software applications including ZBrush, Maya and SketchUp, before sending his nal creations to be 3D printed in a factory in China. “We started working on everything in November last year. The 3D printing is expensive, but it would be much more expensive if he created the sculptures in a traditional way.” So far, reaction to the exhibit has been extremely positive, and the duo are looking forward to welcoming more visitors in the coming months. “It’s a great honour to represent Macau at La Biennale di Venezia. The whole experience has been both challenging and exciting for the artist and me,” says Chang Chan. “We feel incredibly lucky to have received so much support from various parties, making this endeavour possible. Plus, our exhibition has received lots of favourable comments from visitors around the world, which makes the journey even more rewarding. MGM X Ren Zhe – ‘Legends of Chivalry’ Art Exhibition features a series of works created un-der the theme of “Wuxia heroism”. This exhibition combines concepts of “selling exhibition” and “public art”, and employs a multi-dimensional, cross-cultural story-telling of Chinese heritage.At the Spectactle at MGM Cotai stand two impressive sculptures of beloved characters from Jin Yong’s Wuxia mar-tial arts novels, Golden-haired Lion King and Xiaolongnu. To accompany the sculptures, award-winning Hong Kong lm visual effects artist Victor Wong has created a multimedia art-work featuring iconic scenes from The Condor Trilogy also by Jin Hong, offering visitors a 360-degree panoramic view of a vibrantly digitised wuxia world through the Spectacle’s LED screens. Meanwhile, M Art Gallery is presenting more than 20 sculptural art pieces by Ren, which exemplies the fusion of his Chinese philosophical thinking with contemporary tech-niques, alongside a series of manuscripts that serve as an ex-tension of his sculptures. Additionally, Ren’s multidisciplinary series of neo-Chinese home décor products and apparel are ex-hibited for the rst time in the world. He, together with fellow authors Gu Long, Liang Yusheng, are known as the “Three Legs of the Tripod of Wuxia”. His 15 works written between 1955 and 1972 earned him a reputation as one of the greatest and most popular Wuxia writers ever. By the time of his death in 2018, he was the best-selling Chinese author, and over 100 million copies of his works have been sold worldwide to date. Born in 1983, artist Ren Zhe graduated from the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University and is renowned for combining traditional Chinese culture with contemporary Western techniques in his works of art. His art-making ethos is to “channel a formidable external presence by unleashing the momentum of impetuous energy, etch an outward image based on intrinsic character, and embody the essential ethos by building up from within”. In 2019, Ren became the rst contemporary artist to be exhibited at at Beijing’s Imperial Ancestral Temple with his Qi — Ren Zhe Sculpture Exhibition causing a sensation in the art world. His sculptural works are highly sought after in the art auction market and have repeatedly set records for bidding prices. This latest exhibit features several of Ren’s works for the very rst time. Outside MGM COTAI in Macau’s Barra district, a concurrent showcase, Into the World of Wuxia Legends - Jin Yong Wuxia Drama Costumes and Weapons Exhibition displays an array of drama costumes and lm props provided by Hong Kong Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB). It joins two other impressive shows already at the venue, SPACE: A Journey to the Moon Beyond which premiered in Decem-ber last year, and WILD: An Immersive Safari Experience launched in March this year. A total of 2.4 billion pixels are transmitted on all four walls and the floor through 4K laser projec-tions. It has created permanent shows in Las Vegas, Atlanta and Toronto, and now here in Macau at Wynn Palace. The first show presented in Macau, SPACE: A Journey to the Moon Beyond allows visitors to marvel at the vast expanse of the universe as they fly through a technicolor nebula, kick up dust on the moon, see Saturn’s rings up close, and weave through an asteroid belt. The show also highlights the signifi-cant achievements of China’s aerospace industry over the past 30 years.The second show launched at Wynn Palace, WILD: An Immersive Safari Experience is a 45-minute awe-inspiring sa-fari journey featuring 47 species of exotic animals native to the African continent in eight chapters. Shot on location in Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa and Tanzania, the adventure was directed and produced by RadicalMedia, the team behind the award-winning movie Hamilton. The WILD creative process took two years to bring to fruition and required the expertise of talented filmmakers and technologists to capture the wondrous African natural habitats from sunrise to sunset. 44MC MAY / JUN - 2024《美味緣是您》是一套由本地導演花天亮執導的澳門原創電視劇,於5月初首播。本劇僅有三集,以土生葡菜的獨特美味出發,透過味覺勾起種種往事的回憶,描述一段與食物有關的跨國情緣。美食是劇中不可缺少的元素。「相傳在十六至十七世紀,葡萄牙人東渡來澳門途中,經過了非洲、印度和東南亞,採集了很多香料,並逐漸融合澳門的烹飪方法,慢慢演化成屬於我們的本土料理。”花導演說。葡萄牙人與不同地區的族群及澳門的本地華人通婚,在他們的家庭裡發展成了獨一無二的食材、菜式和烹飪方法的組合,這就是我們現在吃到特色土生菜的來源。《美味緣是您》故事圍繞著一位女生的尋味之旅展開,她要尋找一道名為「永生繁花」的葡式海鮮飯的味道,這道菜是她爺爺親手為她烹飪的。多年前,葡萄牙青年Vincent(Kelsey Wilhelm 飾)來到澳門,他在澳門總督府府擔任廚師。 在這里,他邂逅了年輕的本地女子,花(蘇嘉慧 Adela Sou 飾),兩人產生了感情,並有了一段短暫的戀情。不過最後總,Vincent還是決定回去葡萄牙,回歸他的家庭。臨行前,他創作了「永生繁花」這道菜來紀念他們的戀情。然而,花因為Vincent的離開傷心欲絕,狠心把菜譜撕成了兩半。多年後,Vincent也有了孫女Lucía(蘇安喬 Joana Soares 飾),她在葡萄牙生活,但對自己的家族歷史充滿好Taste of Love is an original locally-produced TV series by director Oliver Fa, which premiered in early May. With just three episodes, the series uses the unique avours of Macanese cuisine to evoke memories and narrate a cross-cultural romance.Cuisine is an indispensable element of the series, and one of the main characters in the story was inspired by the director’s mother and her cooking skills.“When the Portuguese sailed to Macau in the 16th and 17th centuries, they passed by Africa, India, and Southeast Asia, collecting many spices and gradually integrating local cooking methods to create Macau’s unique cuisine,” says Fa.The intermarriage between the Portuguese and various local communities, including the Chinese in Macau, led to the unique combination of ingredients, dishes, and cooking methods which today characterise Macanese cuisine.Taste of Love centres around a young woman’s search for a recipe for Portuguese style seafood rice called ‘Eternal Flower’, created by her grandfather.Many years ago, a young man from Portugal, Vincent (played by Kelsey Wilhelm) visits Macau to work as chef at Macau Government House. Here he meets a young local woman, Fa (Adela Sou) and they develop feelings for one another and have a eeting romance. Eventually though, Vincent decides that he needs to return to his family in Portugal. Before he leaves he creates the ‘Eternal Flower’ dish to commemorate their relationship. However, Fa is distraught that Vincent is leaving and tears the recipe in half. Years later, Vincent’s granddaughter Lucía (Joana Soares) is living in Portugal and becomes curious about her family history. She travels to Macau to learn more about her grandfather and his ‘Eternal Flower’ recipe. Here she meets a local chef by the name of António (Guilio Acconci), who happens to be the son of Fa, whom her grandfather once fell in love with.

MC MAY / JUN - 202445And thus ensues a tale of self-discovery, love and friendships across time and cultures, connected by the avours of Macanese cuisine. “We hope that the characters resonate with local people,” says the director. “In the movies and TV shows produced in the west, we are often just the supporting characters, while in the local ones, foreign characters are also usually supporting roles; it seems to be a long-standing tradition,” notes Fa, himself from a mixed-race background. In this series however, he hopes to blur such boundaries, especially geographical and ethnic ones.The two leading actors in the series, Guilio Acconci and Joana Soares for example, are both from families with mixed ethnic backgrounds, and have lived in Macau since childhood. Those emotions of feeling just a little ‘lost’ but still hopeful that she will eventually nd her answers and sense of ‘home’.”In telling this story, the production team hoped to present Macau as more than just a city of casinos and tourists, but to highlight local characteristics to showcase a multi-layered Macau.“We hope we can also portray the unique charm of Macau and it’s people,” Guilio Acconci says.A major challenge for any local production is promotion and distribution, but fortunately for the director and his team, local broadcaster TDM provided a lot of support in presenting the series to local households.Indeed, the creation of this series was no accident. Fa’s team stood out as a talented group in the inaugural TDM TV Drama Screenplay and Production Contest last year, winning the award for ‘Best Screenplay’, competing against 14 other entrants. They were awarded MOP790,000 which they used to bring the series to reality. Despite the challenges for local productions, Guilio believes that developing local stories and dramas for the screen is not impossible.“We want to change the narrative that ‘You can’t do this in Macau!’” he says. “Working on this production has got me to start dreaming, why not Macau? Why don’t we do something? And then the next step is for the local audiences to feel the same. We can denitely produce quality content in Macau, so I think this is another series that we should be proud of.” Acconci has taken part in lming in various regions including Hong Kong and mainland China, and notices a subtle difference when working in Macau with a local crew. “There is a real sense of human warmth here, which is very special, so I hope more production teams from other regions will come here to work and have the chance to feel it too.”“I know for sure this is just the beginning for Macau’s TV and movie production industry,” adds Joana. “Honestly I couldn’t be more excited about it as it’s something I always manifested and dreamed of. People used to say Macau was denitely not the place to develop a career in acting or cinema, but I am so excited that that is slowly changing and I am more than honored to be part of that history. Macau has so much talent and people who are passionate about lm and acting. MC MAY / JUN - 202447Kelsey Wilhelm also agrees: “There’s such an amazing talent pool in Macau, and perhaps because it’s such a small market the artists put themselves into the projects wholeheartedly – never complaining about early mornings, long hours or obstacles to overcome. That forges a bond on set and means that you always have friends on the next project. My co-actor Adela Sou was incredible at setting the emotional tone of the scenes, which made my job easy. Overall, I think that the results surpassed expectations and I hope that this encourages more investment in local talent and artistic productions.”Adela played the role of Fa and admits that working in the lm industry is not as glamorous as people might think.“When you go through the trials of this industry and see what it’s really like, you might sometimes question whether you really want to continue. And recently, the nale of the second season of the popular crime drama aired, leaving fans hoping for a third season. The series was directed by Lau Gar Ho and stars Ruco Chan, Ben Wong, Rosina Lam and Cheung Wing Hong among other big names in the Hong Kong acting world. Two senior detectives Hui Chun-sum (Ruco Chan) and Shum Wai-lik (Ben Wong) are investigating transnational crimes. Along the way they discover that Ngai Chi-lok (Cheung Wing Hong), the culprit behind the Tiger Cull case, sent some secret message to the dark web before he was apprehended, and transferred a substantial amount in cryptocurrency. Soon a mysterious person plots to launch a terrorist attack. As the ofcers navigate a series of conspiracies, in one episode they encounter a very sinister looking mob boss, played by someone who is no stranger to people in Macau, our very own ‘friend to the stars’, Reggie Martin.Having grown up on the tough streets of East Chicago, Reggie seemed to have had no trouble getting in to character for the role. “I was playing the head maa boss and I love movies like The Godfather and Scarface, so I had a lot of fun and I think I really mastered the role, even though I’m not an actor. It’s denitely a role I would like to continue to play,” says Reggie.Despite his enthusiasm for the part, sadly Reggie won’t be reprising this particular role because his character gets killed off, violently stabbed in the neck by an assassin.“I was only in two episodes. I came in one episode and I ended up being terminated in the next one,” Reggie laughs. “And it’s funny because I joked with the director beforehand about this. I said “hey man, I’ll do it, but don’t have the black man being killed in the rst scene. We’re always the rst ones to be killed”, and then who was the rst one to be killed? Me! I got stabbed in the neck. 50MC MAY / JUN - 2024Reggie was initially contacted about being part of the Hong Kong TV series by Liviu Covalschi, an actor and stuntman who used to live in Macau, “I want to say a big thanks to Liviu, because he was the one that put us in contact. I’m very thankful and grateful that he made it work. He was awesome.”Even though he only had a small role to play, Reggie clearly had a great time on set. “My project was really just 18 hours. They came to pick me up at three in the morning and I didn’t leave till ten o’clock that night, so it was long day. But the cast and crew made it simple for me because they know acting is not my profession, it’s just a hobby. They gave me a script and coached me, and they told me to say whatever I would say in real life and then let me just run with it,” Reggie comments.“There were so many top Hong Kong actors involved, so it was an honour to be a part of it. But it was also very intimidating. People think it’s easy. They think you just get up and play a role like you’re practising in the mirror. But they don’t realise there’s like 100 people there, with the camera people, makeup artists, and all the cast and crew, so many people just staring at you doing your role. And if you mess up, you just feel like you’ve wasted everybody’s time.”This was not Reggie’s rst time on a set though. Back in 1996 he was an extra on a comedy movie called Original Gangsters. He was also an extra in Now You See Me 2 which starred Daniel Radcliffe and had scenes lmed here in

And in 2013 he acted for some scenes in Hong Kong in From Vegas to Macau starring Chow Yun Fat.“Not many people can say they’ve been in movies with Daniel Radcliffe and Chow Yun Fat,” he laughs.Reecting on his latest performance, Reggie comments: “I think I did a good job for my rst time with a proper speaking role. And I credit the crew because they made me feel so comfortable on the set. It was fun and I’d love to do it again. TV dramas are so popular here.”Almost as popular as Reggie’s Instagram page which has over 4.6 million followers. Not surprisingly, his scenes in Sinister Beings 2 have generated a lot of interest and likes on Instagram too, achieving over a million views (@reggiemartin10).When he’s not going viral on Instagram or playing a gangster, Reggie is one of the co-founding members and vice-chair of AMCHAM in Macau, as well as a long serving executive at The Venetian. While being based in Macau for 23 years, he has always maintained strong ties with his hometown of East Chicago, and last year in December he organised the rst Annual Reggie Martin Basketball Classic established to promote the best high school basketball talent from East Chicago and Northwest Indiana, with great success. With his big acting role done, Reggie is now focusing his attention on planning his next basketball event scheduled for the end of this year. 54MC MAY / JUN - 2024首本由Filipa Simões編著的《澳門街頭藝術指南》,於5月底在九號碼頭創意空間正式發佈。《澳門街頭藝術指南》是澳門首創,以獨特的視角展示澳門的城市景觀。當中匯集了澳門、氹仔和路環的街頭藝術作品。本項目的目標是將本地街頭藝術主題中的內容具體化地呈現,使街頭藝術文化變得有形、可讀和可收藏,將有助於鞏固和認識澳門獨特的城市文化。「街頭藝術是促進城市文化認同、活化被遺忘的舊區的有力途徑,」Filipa說。「這本書的目的是突出和推廣澳門的街頭藝術,從而鞏固和認可澳門城市文化。這也是一封邀請函,讓讀者漫步城中,發掘隱藏的寶藏和獨特的故事。」《指南》收集了2023年的街頭藝術作品,精選當中短暫而具魅力的街頭藝術表現形式。書中把澳門分為六個地區中心:四個在澳門,兩個在氹仔和路環,可作為作為欣賞本地街頭文化的行程指南。「街頭藝術與所在地有著內在的聯繫,往往能詮釋它,改變它。街頭藝術為我們這座本已文化氛圍濃郁、獨具魅力的城市又增添了一層色彩,」作者評論道。「澳門每年迎來數以百萬計的遊客,但他們很少偏離那些最著名的旅遊景點。街頭藝術可以喚起人們對這座城市隱秘角落的關注,展開一幅幅生動的故事畫卷。」The first ever Guide to Street Art in Macau, by Filipa Simões was launched at the end of May at Ponte 9 – Creative Platform. The publication is the first of its kind in Macau, and provides a unique perspective on the urban landscape of the city, gathering street art works from Macau, Taipa, and Coloane. The goal of this project was to make the street art culture in the city more tangible, readable, and collectable, and to aid in the consolidation and recognition of urban culture in Macau. “Street art is a powerful instrument to promote a city’s cultural identity and to activate dilapidated and forgotten urban areas,” says Filipa. “The goal of this book was to highlight and make accessible Macau’s street art, aiding in the consolidation and recognition of urban culture in Macau. It is also an invitation to stroll through the city to discover its hidden treasures and unique stories.”With street art work collected in 2023, the guide offers a curated selection of ephemeral pieces and alternative itineraries around the city, organised into six hubs: four in Macau and two in Taipa and Coloane. It adds a layer to our city, that is already culturally dense and fascinating,” the author comments. “Macau is visited by millions of tourists, but they seldom venture outside the most famous itineraries. Street art can raise awareness about the city’s hidden corners, transforming them into a living canvas of stories.”The book launch event was attended by the author, Filipa Simões, the project coordinator and President of CURB (Center for Architecture and Urbanism), Nuno Soares, the project photographer, David Lopo, and local street artists ANHZ and FEW, also known as AAFK. Filipa Simões is a designer and teacher based in Macau since 2004. She is the Supervisor of the Bachelor of Design at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Saint Joseph, where she has been teaching since 2013. Fascinated with cities, food, books and all things graphic, Filipa develops her creative work across different platforms – as a graphic artist, creative director and teacher. She is the creative director and founder of WHYDESIGN and director of PONTE 9 Creative Platform. “Writing this book was a journey of discovery of places, artworks and the meaning behind them,” she says. “It was surprising how each photograph revealed to us details of the artworks that were not evident to the naked eye.“The street art in Macau is as diverse as the city itself and there are several works that resonate with me. I nd it inspiring when the artists can achieve a subtle dialogue with the place, such as the artwork featured on the book cover. MC MAY / JUN - 202457The Macao of ShōgunOf course it’s mostly about Japan’s Tokugawa Shogunate but James Clavell’s 1975 blockbuster novel Shōgun, now a major new big budget and ambitious TV series, also has plenty to say about Macao. The 1,000+-page novel is, in one sense, about the battle be-tween the mutually antagonistic realms of Protestant England and Catholic Portugal competing across Asia in the early 1600s. England seeks to disrupt and usurp Portugal’s “Black Ships” trade with Japan, and by extension (and via Macao) with China. Far away European pow-er politics and religious sectarianism contrasts with the internecine political manoeuvrings of Japan’s Samurai warlords. Shōgun is loosely based on the life and times of William Adams, the “Pilot”, the rst Englishman to reach Osaka, sailing under a Dutch ag, and his challenge to Lisbon’s dom-inance of “the Japans”. Adams becomes the character John Blackthorne in Clavell’s novel. In another sense Shōgun is about the estab-lishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate and how Japan initially encountered Europe. The new big-budget high-concept ten-episode Shōgun TV show dives deeper into the Japanese char-acters’ lives and motivations, but crucially, in both the book and TV series, Macao is never far from the action – just off-stage, but central to the plot and action throughout. Early on a key fact is revealed by Clavell’s character Father Martin Alvito (based on the real Portuguese sailor-warrior-priest-missionary João Rodrigues, commonly known as Lu Ruohan - 陸若漢 in China and Tçuzu/Tsūji, “The Interpreter”, in Japan). The Jesuit Brotherhood are deeply involved in both reli-gious conversion and trade. They’re proting greatly from both. And, crucially, as Alvito admits to the “Pilot”, they have neglected to men-tion to their Japanese partners their trading base at Macao. Nor have they told them about the existence of Ronin - rogue Samurai warriors with no masters - converted to Christianity and garrisoned in Macao. Thus Macao is revealed as both a secret military base and a concealed trading post exploiting the extremely lucrative commercial links be-tween Shogunate Japan and Ming dynasty China, all to Portugal’s -nancial benet.And so we have the gloriousness of the Portuguese “Black Ships”, 1,600-ton carracks whose hulls were painted with black pitch, riding the monsoon winds between Macao and Nagasaki full of Canton silk and conveying never less than 100,000 ounces of Chinese gold. Then, silks sold, gold traded, Japanese manufactures loaded, the Portuguese rode the November monsoon winds back to Macao, and then perhaps onwards to Goa and eventually Lisbon. But what else lurked in the damp holds of the Black Ships – smuggled muskets to Christian-friendly Lords in Japan; persecuted local Christians transported sur-reptitiously to Macao to augment the Ronin forces?John Blackthorne is eager for the Japanese to hear of this fabled, treasure-laden land of Portuguese Macao. Anything he can do to un-dermine the Portuguese position in Japan is to his, and Protestant England’s, advantage. But he is not perhaps so noble as he constantly insists. The Pilot is essentially a privateer, to the Portuguese simply a pirate, raiding Spanish and Portuguese vessels – the Black Ships out of Nagasaki, the Spanish Galleons out of Manila. But Blackthorne knows that if the Japanese discover the Portuguese have kept Macao secret then the uneasy trust between will be destroyed. And there it is, throughout Shōgun – Macao, the grit that comes between the Japanese and the Portuguese eventually eroding away the Jesuit’s for-merly privileged position. Of course Adams, the inspiration for Shōgun, never actually set foot in Macao. The enmity between Protestant England and Holland against Catholic Spain and Portugal was too great. He died at Hirado, just north of Nagasaki, in 1620. Rodrigues of course did spend time in Macao. Originally a sail-or from Sernancelhe in northern Portugal, he arrived in Japan in 1577 barely 17. Two years later he joined the Jesuits, became uent in Japanese and Chinese and known as “The Interpreter”. In 1594 he was ordained a priest in Macao and did encounter, and verbally spar with, Adams/Blackthorne. In 1614, as the persecution of Christians in Japan began, Rodrigues nally left Japan after 30 years. He head-ed once more for Macao to work with the Jesuit Mission there. For the next 15 years he moved constantly between mainland China and Macao. He died in Macao in 1633 at a very respectable (for the 1600s) 72. Rodrigues was buried in St Paul’s church, tting perhaps as many Japanese Christian craftsmen, converted by Portuguese Jesuits and later expelled from Japan in the 1580s, had worked on St. Paul’s. The ruins of course remain. So why all this history? Well, should you decide to watch the ex-cellent new adaptation of Shōgun, or be inspired to read Clavell’s nov-el, it’s worth remembering that in the background, hovering unseen but symbolically like Banquo’s Ghost in Macbeth (incidentally written by Shakespeare in 1606 just as William Adams began working for the Tokugawa Shogunate) is the constant specter of Portuguese Macao.James Clavell

Although she doesn’t have a physical shop, many customers in Macau turn to her Instagram page where the designer posts photos of all the styles and colours of bags she creates. It’s also possible to order any other design, and choose the colour and material so that “the bag is tailored to its future owner,” Yuliia shares.The process of creating a bag takes about a week, but it all depends on the complexity of the style and the size, she explains, as sometimes she also has to “order material and wait for it to arrive”, in which case it can take two or three weeks. Of the orders she has already received, one of the most challenging was for a whole suitcase with a perfume-shaped zip. “It was very difcult to connect the bag and the lid with a zip, but it turned out great.”With prices starting at MOP350, similar to the cost of a good quality mobile phone case, Yuliia’s bags are all completely original designs, which makes them even more unique. “Each bag is individual, created for a specic person, so no one else will have a bag exactly like it. Often a client wants to buy a bag but can’t decide on the design, so I look at a photo of her and create a bag that reects her character and personality,” Yuliia explains.With their striking aesthetic coming from the shine and texture of the beads, most of the designs are not for everyday use, but are more suitable for special occasions, as wearing them offers an original look. “A bag like this can’t leave anyone feeling indifferent,” says the designer. MC MAY / JUN - 202463As for the possibility of making other products or clothes with beads, she says that it is necessary to consider the weight, but she would still like to explore garments such as tops or a jackets.Yuliia’s desire to create beautiful objects goes back to her childhood, when she enjoyed doing small crafts, sitting for hours on end weaving bead bracelets. She recalls the day she repaired a damaged suitcase by splicing it with beads. “All my friends asked me where I had bought such a beautiful bag. I was about 14 at the time and now I realise that was really my rst bag creation.” Many years later, this forgotten skill came back to “haunt” her, she jokes, taking up this work again by hand and starting rst to make bags for herself, and then for a friend.“My hobby gradually grew into a brand, with the name inspired by my family name.” The objects she creates now come from her strong desire to express the character of the person wearing them. MC MAY / JUN - 202465I have received a few comments that my previous co-lumn was a bit on the heavy side, so let me try so-mething lighter for my twelfth column in this summer time issue. The past two months have been rather eventful for the culinary scene in town, with the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Macau Bailliage welcoming its new Bailli Délégué, Ms. Ada Chio, as well as a newly appointed Committee. Meanwhile, Michelin-starred guests chefs from different parts of the world (Heinz Beck, Dave Pynt, Olivier Elzer and José Avillez to name just a few) have roamed the spectrum of restau-rants at the different resorts, creating unique experiences for everyone, especially those with an acquired taste.Not being able to commit myself to all the exciting di-ning escapades, I was very glad to have been able to make it to the Disciples Escoffier dinner, which featured a four-hands menu curated by the President of Disciples Escoffier Shenzhen Chef Alan Yu, who helms One-Michelin-starred Ambré-Ciel, and Vice President of Disciples Escoffier Ma-cau, Chef Giulioantonio, who also wears the “toque” of Exe-cutive Chef at Mandarin Oriental, Macau. The 8-course menu included an entrée of delicately assembled Sicilian Red Prawns (my love!) dressed in Yuzu sauce, Salicornia and Chives Oil for a refreshing beginning, which then led to a clever reinterpretation of Xiao Long Bao served in an intensely flavoured Matsutake Consommé. The meat dish, my favourite of the night, was Baby Pigeon Ballo-tine crépinette, with Celeriac Purée with Truffle Pigeon Jus. The burnt, savory goodness of the caul fat and pigeon meat in every bite was just mind-blowing.I was in my own realm savoring every bite of my pigeon dish when a Russian lady at our table, who happened to be in Macau just for this dinner, gushed about how wonderful it would be to have a chef husband.I very quickly replied, “No! Chefs cook lazy food at home!” And to my surprise, Chef Gianluca and Chef Bobby who were at our table, immediately applauded me in agree-ment. “How do you know what?” the gorgeous lady asked. Well, I didn’t want to “air out my dirty laundry” right there at the table with people who may or may not have known my only chef ex-boyfriend, so I simply replied that I have enough chef friends to know this.But as I want to make things lighter and more fun for you, my readers, I don’t mind sharing some stories here. (I know what hypocrisy this is. Also, not a Taylor Swift wan-nabe). To begin with, until I met him, I had never once had a home-cooked steak that wasn’t butter basted with herbs and seasoned with black pepper. However I soon disco-vered that my chef ex-boyfriend only had table salt at his home, and he once served me a piece of very mediocre steak, bland.Then, earlier this year, two days after I was discharged from the hospital in Hong Kong after having a myomectomy done, he was sweet enough to volunteer to make pasta for us. Being horribly in pain inside-out, I sluggishly told him that the doctor had specifically said that my digestive sys-tem was affected by the general anaesthesia that had been necessary for the surgery, as well as the strong antibiotics that the doctor prescribed me, so I could not eat al dente or anything too stimulating for my stomach, including spices.After taking note of these dietary restrictions, he promptly hopped into the kitchen to get started. Soon a de-licious tomato aroma filled the air, which awoke my appeti-te. I said “Grazie” as he served me and quickly started taking big bites of this yummy bowl of al dente pasta! Initially I thought to myself “Okay, I’ll just bite them into smaller pieces so that my tummy won’t dislike it too much.” But two more bites later, my mouth and my stomach began to burn. I turned to my chef to reconfirm if any spices had been put into the tomato sauce. As the pain in my stomach grew, my anger grew twice as much as he told me, “Yes, I put chilli but I took it out of before I put it on the plate.” I was in too much pain with three incisions and two stitched-up wounds on my uterus and a burning stomach to even yell at him, so I just uttered an agonised “Whyyyyy?!” In the midst of my suffering, he told me, “Because the sauce wouldn’t taste as good without it.” I couldn’t even manage to gasp a “Porco Dio!” at him as I was consumed by all the different degrees of pain in my body and I just had to lie down.There are more stories to tell, but I should stop here because I’m running out of space in this column. As speech-less as I was when all of these things happened, it’s actually giving me a good laugh now that I’m typing it out. The best part though, is knowing that he will never find out that I wrote about him because apparently, “Chefs don’t have time to read!” — not even their girlfriend’s column!

Most of the typical dishes in French cuisine are from Lyon, so it was an easy choice to focus on this region,” explains Bernard Peres, co-owner and manager of the restaurant.Dining enthusiasts in Macau may recognize the location of Le Bouchon as having previously been home to Italian restaurant La Buca. When his Italian business partner left Macau in 2021, Bernard continued to operate La Buca, but eventually decided to change it to French cuisine instead. “There are a few Italian restaurants and pizza places in Macau, but actually not so many French restaurants, and certainly nothing like a cozy bistro, so we thought it was a good opportunity,” he says.法廚小館位於市中心的龍嵩正街,是一間新開業的地道法式小酒館,供應來自美食名城法國里昂的佳饌,為賓客打造美味驚喜。「里昂是法國的美食之都,很多著名的法國菜式都來自那裏,因此我們很快就決定專註里昂美食,」餐廳共同所有人兼經理 Bernard Peres 解釋。澳門的美食愛好者可能還記得法廚小館的前身,意廚小館。當他的意大利生意夥伴於2021年離開澳門後,Bernard繼續經營餐廳,但決意轉做法國菜。󵈾󹓮󲼆󲴱󼵱BON APPÉTIT

68MC MAY / JUN - 2024Originally from Marseilles, Bernard has lived in Macau for 27 years, and is no stranger to operating businesses here. Previously he owned Le Bistro in Taipa and Gourmet Fine Foods. “We opened Le Bouchon in January and considering the situation in Macau, we are doing OK so far. We are open for lunch and dinner, and dinner is particularly busy. We are normally full in the evenings, so guests need to make a booking.” The cozy bistro has seating for just 17 upstairs, and also has a small private dining room downstairs for a maximum of six persons. Despite its small size, the table arrangements do not feel crowded and the intimate environment still allows for easy conversations.Working in the kitchen is another long-term French resident of Macau, Chef Eve Duron who was previously the executive chef at the old Mandarin Oriental, and continued to work there after it was rebranded as Grand Lapa. After retiring, he began teaching part-time at the Macau University of Science and Technology, and Bernard has now invited him to bring his culinary talents to La Bouchon. “I think he was bored in his retirement anyway,” laughs the restaurant owner.According to Bernard, some of the most popular dishes on the menu are also the most classic ones in French cuisine, like, for example, baked Burgundy Snails in Garlic Butter (Les Escargots de Bourgogne), and Sauteed Frog Legs with Garlic and Parsley (Les Cuisses de Grenouilles Sautées à l’Ail et au Persil).「澳門有不少意大利餐廳和比薩薄餅店,但法國餐廳並不多,更沒有舒適的法式小酒館,所以我們覺得這是一個好機會,」他說。Bernard來自法國馬賽,已經在澳門生活了27年,對在這裏經商並不陌生。此前,他曾在氹仔經營 Le Bistro 餐廳和 Gourmet Fine Foods 食品店。「法廚小館於今年一月開業,考慮到澳門的情況,目前生意還不錯。我們供應午餐和晚餐,晚餐時段尤其繁忙,經常滿座,需要提前預訂。」這家舒適的小酒館樓上僅可容納17人,樓下設有一個小型包廂,最多可容納6人。儘管面積不大,但餐桌佈置並不擁擠,私密的環境仍能讓人自在交談。GOURMET美食

MC MAY / JUN - 202469Other dishes that come highly recommended include “Rossini” Beef sirloin steak, with pan-fried foie-gras (Le Tournedos Rossini) and Pike River Fish Quenelles in Lobster Sauce (Les Quenelles de Brochet, Sauce Nantua).On our visit to La Bouchon we also enjoyed the Beef Tartare for our entrée, and an amazing Tatin Apple Tart to nish off the meal. Cheese and beef Fondues are available but require 48-hour advance bookings, and the lunch set menu for MOP138 is a particularly good deal.“We change the lunch set menu every week and offer a different soup and dessert every day,” says Bernard.“We order oysters from Brittany twice week, so they are always extremely fresh,” he adds. “We always use high quality ingredients and we don’t try to do anything ‘East meets West’. We want to keep the original recipes and authentic avours.” Chatting with Bernard as we nish our meal, we wonder what brought him to Macau all those years ago. “I had been living in Portugal for 16 years running another business, so when I came to Asia, Macau was a good choice. I arrived in December 1996 and at that time Macau really just felt like a big village.”Interestingly, his other business is manufacturing collectible model cars and planes. He has one factory in China and one in Bangladesh, and is currently launching his rst collection in Australia. “Running any business in Macau is a challenge and restaurants are no different, especially now that many people go across the border to Zhuhai on the weekends. On June 3, the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and Macao together with the Prosecco DOC Consortium hosted “Prosecco DOC - The Italian Sparkling Art of Living” at Terrazza Italian Restaurant at Galaxy Macau. The event gathered enthusiasts for a night of fun networking and sampling a number of fantas-tic Prosecco DOCs including Val d’Oca, Ponte 1948, De Stefani and La Marca.The event was part of “Prosecco Week”, a comprehensive tour taking place in June throughout different Asian cities in-cluding Macau, Hong Kong, Xiamen, Beijing, and Shanghai, aimed at enhancing Prosecco DOC awareness among the lo-cal food and beverage businesses and creating meaningful connections.The Prosecco DOC Consortium (Consorzio di Tutela della Denominazione di Origine Controllata Prosecco) was established in 2009 to coordinate and manage the Prosecco DOC produc-tion. MC MAY / JUN - 202475“Our consortium is based in Treviso, Italy, a small vil-lage north of Venice in the Veneto region which is the heart of Prosecco production,” says Tanja Barattin, Marketing Manager for the Consortium. “Our appellation is linked to a specific ter-ritory which includes the village of Prosecco in North-east Italy, and thanks to this little village, we have been able to brand the area of Prosecco DOC production in nine provinces and two regions, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia. We represent more than 12,000 grape growers and 1,200 winemakers so we are a big family!”In 2023, the region produced 616 million bottles of Prosecco DOC, more than double the production of Champagne. Eighty percent of Prosecco is exported, mostly to the UK, Europe and the US. “Prosecco DOC is the biggest sparkling wine appellation in the world in terms of production and consumption. It is very fresh, lively and fruity and has a good balance of acidity and sug-ar. There are different typologies, some sweet and some dry, and it’s very easy to drink, to pair with food and to mix with cock-tails. Prosecco DOC really is a symbol of the Italian lifestyle. In our region, it’s a part of our daily lives,” explains Tanja. Prosecco DOC wines come in Spumante (sparkling), Frizzante (semi-sparkling) and Tranquillo (still) varieties. The wines are made from mainly the Glera grape, native to Northeast Italy for thousands of years, and can be combined with a maximum of 15% of the other grapes. Prosecco Frizzante and Spumante varieties get their famous bubbles using the Secondary Fermentation production method, bottled under high pressure after fermentation in bulk tanks called autoclaves.The end result is a brilliant straw yellow wine with fine, persistent perlage and aromas of white flowers, apple and pear. It is fresh and elegant on the palate with moderate alcoholic strength.In 2020, the production of Prosecco DOC Rosé was autho-rised, made from at least 85% Glera and 10-15% Pinot Nero only in the Spumante and features aromas of white flowers, notes of apple and citrus, and scents of strawberry and raspberry.

We leave the house in the morning, the ofce in the evening, and the restaurant after a meal… These departures seem mundane, devoid of emotional waves. However, when we talk about leaving a person, a place, a job, a relationship, or even this world, different emotions come along. Are such departures always full of sadness? In my previous column, I mentioned that this year marks the beginning of the “Feng Shui Period 9” (also known as the “Nine Purple Fire Luck”). After writing that, I nally made a long-awaited decision: to leave the company that had accompanied me for six years and start anew.Leaving to Start OverThe last time I started anew was six years ago when I graduated from the University of Macau and decided not to go to Boston, but to stay in Macau. This time, after six years and eight months, I decided to continue developing in Macau but in a different way.When people ask me why I’m leaving, my answer is always the same: I believe that encountering a new energy period during my prime years, especially in an era of advanced information, allows me to understand the attributes and characteristics of this cycle. If I don’t seize the opportunity and make changes accordingly, I will regret it.Leaving as an OpportunityBased on various sources, from 2024, the year of Jiachen in the Chinese calendar, we ofcially enter the years dominated by “Feng Shui Period 9”. The cultural industry will undergo signicant changes, with thought, education, lm and media, cultural dissemination, and traditional culture being rejuvenated, along with new technological inventions and creations.Moreover, Period 9 corresponds to the Li trigram, representing middle-aged women aged 30 to 55. The futuristic Tesla Cybertruck was in town for just a few weeks and was mostly on display in the Tesla showroom at Lisboeta Macau, as well as some other locations. Unfortunately, this one was just to look at, not to test drive and not for sale. Such is the demand for this groundbreaking vehicle, that it is currently only for sale in the US market. When will it be available in Macau? No one can say just yet, so if you’re a diehard Tesla fan, you are just going to have to keep waiting patiently.Given the size and intended off-road functionality of the Cybertruck, you may be wondering why anyone in Macau would want one. But with its impressive high-tech features and insanely striking outward appearance, we are pretty condent that it will be a hit here too, when it nally becomes available.The Cybertruck was rst revealed to the world in 2019 as a prototype at a much-hyped launch event, where Telsa CEO, Elon Musk famously demonstrated the strength of the window glass by smashing it with a sledgehammer. While many exciting looking concept cars ultimately get toned down when they reach the production stage, fortunately the street version of the Cybertruck looks basically identical, retaining all its sleek, sharp-edge lines, space-age minimalism and bare polished stainless steel panel work. And since the launch, they even managed to x the window glass so now it is almost indestructible. 80MC MAY / JUN - 2024This is the rst car to feature all unpainted stainless steel bodywork since the 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 (featured in the Back to the Future movies). The panels of the Cybertruck are bolted directly onto a steel monocoque creating a literally bulletproof exoskeleton. Telsa claims that it can withstand up to 45-caliber and 9mm bullets as well as 12-gauge shotgun shells. And if you don’t believe them, there are some great YouTube videos to prove it.The exterior appearance of the Cybertruck is like nothing ever made before, and of course it is a little divisive. Some love it, some hate it, but no one can deny that it stands out in a crowd and provides a real wow factor amidst the drag of everyday trafc. Tesla design boss Franz von Holzhausen previously commented: “We realised that the pickup truck market hadn’t changed at all, so we wanted to do something dramatic that changed everything.” I think we can all agree that they have achieved their goal. On the inside, we nd a generally familiar Telsa interior with a long, wide minimalist dash, interrupted only by an imposing 18.5-inch touchscreen. As with all Telsas, this is where all the controls and fun tech accessories are to be found, including the rear view mirror display because when the tonneau cover is closed over the back bed there is no rear window to see out of. MC MAY / JUN - 202481There is an additional 9.4-inch touchscreen for the rear seat passengers to control the entertainment system and climate control. All the air vents are wonderfully hidden away too. Like all Teslas, there are no other physical buttons to play with, but there is plenty of legroom and headroom both front and rear in the very spacious cabin. The driver gets a uniquely hexagonal-shaped steering wheel, controlling the all-new variable ratio ‘drive by wire’ steering system. This means that you only have to turn the steering wheel one half turn to fully turn the front wheels (no more hand-over-hand steering needed). Combined with independent rear-wheel steering, the Cybertruck has amazing manoeuvrability for a vehicle its size. And there are no stocks on the steering wheel either. Indicators and wiper controls are now just buttons on the steering wheel. Moving round to the back of the vehicle we nd the steeply sloped tonneau cover (strong enough to stand on) which cleverly retracts with just the touch of a button. The rear bed is huge (180cm x 137cm) and comes with cool LED light strips so you can see what you’re doing at night. There is also a handy extra storage space hidden underneath the bed which can even double as a drink cooler if you ll it full of ice. Power outlets in the rear allow you to run all sorts of electrical appliances. And of course for more storage space there is 200-litre Frunk. The Tesla Cybertruck currently comes in two congurations: the 600hp Dual Motor all-wheel-drive and the 834hp triple motor Beast. The Dual Motor version will do 0-100km/h in just 3.9 seconds and the Beast will do the same in just 2.6 seconds, which is crazy for a 3,000kg truck! (Check out the video of the Cybertruck drag racing a Porsche 911 while also towing a 911!). Towing capacity for both models is close to 5,000kg, and top speeds are 180km/h and 209km/h respectively. A single motor, rear-wheel-drive model is likely to be available in the future and will probably be sensible option for Macau drivers. The Cybertruck also features Tesla’s largest battery to date, 123kWh, which provides a driving range of around 550km and can charge from 10 to 50% in just under an hour. While not available currently in Macau, the US market price is around US$80,000 for the Dual Motor model and US$100,000 for the Beast model. Who knows when it will nally arrive in Macau, so the price could be even less by that time. In the meantime, we will all just have to be content with watching other people enjoy the Cybertruck on YouTube! And you can still get your Tesla speed x by test-driving the Model S Plaid! MC MAY / JUN - 202483When on the train from Sintra to Lisbon, clinical laboratory scientist Dr José Carlos Pereira bumped into an old colleague who told him she’d moved with her husband to Macau. Their conversation piqued his interest. Would he like to go to Macau she asked. “Yes!” “Well, send me your CV”. That was back in mid-1994 when at the time there were only two pathologists in our public hospital Conde de Sao Januario. Excited and full of anticipation, José confesses that he was underwhelmed when he rst arrived. “Macau’s weather in September can be very cloudy and I’m used to the sunshine and cobalt blue skies of Portugal. Everywhere was grey, the water was brown, and the caged balconies … it was a culture shock. I knew no one; my friend who’d initially invited me over was traveling, so for the rst 15 days I found it lonely.” Gradually José began meeting friends of friends from back home and people he’d meet at musical evenings and art exhibitions. He would join them for dinner afterwards and soon became part of a good social group and started planning early on to join others on his rst Asian adventure out of Macau – to Burma! For his rst four weeks in Macau, José stayed in the Beverly Hotel, which is just a 15-minute walk to the hospital so he could be on call for any emergencies. Eventually he was convinced by a landscape architect friend to move to up-and-coming Taipa where he secured an apartment in Hoi Yi Fa Yuen. “At the time it had wonderful sea views of the outer harbour, the cityscape, the night time neon lights of the Macau skyline.” And then, to the side, Nova City began emerging. After two years, José returned to Portugal where he stayed for the next six years, working in Faro, Caldas da Rainha and Lisbon. Then in 2002 he was invited again to help cover staff shortages in the laboratories of Sao Januario and he found himself on his way back to Macau; a year at most he was told, during which time he could also explore a little bit more of Asia. So he packed up and headed back. “I arrived on the 3 January 2003”. Thus began José’s next Macau chapter. Like many from overseas who come to Macau for work, this short-term mission turned into two years – and eventually into a series of “20 one-year contracts!” he laughs. Driven by a sense of adventure, José Carlos Pereira arrived in Macau over 30 years ago, to work and to visit places that had red his imagination as a child. 84MC MAY / JUN - 2024Both sets of Jose’s grandparents moved from Portugal to Angola, Africa in the early 1900’s “looking for a better life in the Colonies.” His father was born and raised in Africa where he became an industrial designer for the CFB railway company and met his mother who was an accountant. They went on to have José and his younger siblings all born in Lobito, Angola. Tragedy struck in 1971 when at 11 years old, José’s father died. For his mother, personally, emotionally and nancially it was a very traumatic situation for the young widow, with three sons and a fourth on the way, and with no immediate family support system nearby. As the 1975 civil war in the area caused further hardship, she moved to the capital, Luanda, and spent 15 more years working to continue earning money to support the family and to see José through his university medical studies where he specialized in clinical pathology. The family eventually settled back in Portugal, in the charming resort town of Sintra. From a young age José had collected stamps and coins; as a boy visiting his grandparents he recalls discovering some coins in an old sewing machine drawer - some 60 to 80 years old by then, some from the late monarchy and from the rst Republic of Portugal, others from the Belgian Congo coming from his grandfather’s job as he had traveled the train line through all Angola to the Belgium Congo borders. They inspired José’s imagination of stories from magical far-ung places. Now based in Asia his interest in collecting began in earnest. Days off were spent rummaging through the little dusty ‘hole in the wall’ shops of old Macau and Hong Kong, hunting down treasures. “I’ve always been a collector at heart – when I travel, I like going to the markets. In the beginning I started with little knowledge and I didn’t have any particular objective for collecting, I would just buy what I liked or what grabbed my attention.” One day, some 13 or 14 years ago, José was strolling around the narrow lanes of old Macau with a German friend who could speak Cantonese. He spotted a porcelain duck – chipped and with legs broken and glued back on, but with a seal on its underneath. The seller wanted MOP1,000 and José’s friend thought he was mad to even consider buying such a chipped, cracked piece. He left the duck, but over the next three or four years he’d often pass the shop and look in to see it still sitting on the top shelf gathering dust. 「當時,這裏有絕佳的海景,可以看到外港、城市景觀、澳門夜空天際線閃爍的霓虹燈。」後來,旁邊建起了濠庭都會。兩年後,José回到葡萄牙,先後在法魯、卡爾達斯達賴尼亞和里斯本工作了六年。2002年,José再次受邀幫助山頂醫院實驗室解決人員短缺問題,他發現自己又要回到澳門了;他被告知最多只能在澳門工作一年,在此期間,他還可以繼續探索亞洲。於是,他收拾行李返回了澳門。「我於2003年1月3日再度來到澳門。」José的下一個澳門篇章由此開始。像很多來澳門工作的海外人士一樣,短期工作變成了兩年,最後變成了「20個一年期合同!」他笑道。José的祖父母和外祖父母都在20世紀初從葡萄牙移居非洲安哥拉,「為了在殖民地尋求更好的生活」。José的父親在非洲出生並長大,後來成為CFB鐵路公司的工業設計師,並遇到了身為會計師的母親。他們在安哥拉的洛比托生下了Jose和弟弟們。悲劇發生在1971年,José年僅11歲時,父親不幸去世。對於José的母親,無論從個人、情感還是經濟上來說,都是一個巨大的打擊。她年紀輕輕便守寡,撫養三個兒子,第四個兒子即將出生,沒有任何直系親屬可以提供支持。1975年的內戰給這個地區帶來了更多災難,她帶全家搬

I pursued my interest in antiques and occasionally would buy a book or two from the Museum gift shop each time I visited an exhibition at the Cultural Centre. Browsing one day, I turned the page and there was my duck, exactly, and described as a Ming incense burner. I rushed over to buy the duck but the shop owner wasn’t selling – others had been asking about it too.” It took José another two years to convince the owner to sell – and in the end he bought it for MOP2,000! The duck became his mascot and marked the start of a more systematic and knowledgeable approach to collecting and to negotiating. He started studying, reading up voraciously on Chinese history, ceramics, symbolism, styles – “it’s all related to art, religion and culture, all linked with history” – and making conscious purchases to add to his collection. As his knowledge increased and his tastes rened, José started visiting the antique shops that line the streets by the Ruins of St. Paul’s and the whole Chinese bazaar, learning and buying from the antique dealers, several of whom have become close friends over the years. “They helped educate my eyes”, he explains, “it was an epiphany, something new started in my life, a real passion and appreciation for the beauties of Asian art.”“My collecting now is driven by intuition - a combination of educated eyes, experience, knowledge, and luck! I’ve reached the level where I can follow my intuition. The reality, genuineness, and honesty is in the piece. Quality has a voice and doesn’t cheat you. I’ve learned how to separate the wheat from the chaff.”While José’s primary focus is on Chinese ceramics, terracotta, porcelain, stoneware - “all arts of re” - he also owns a ne collection of classical Chinese paintings, rugs from China, Khotan from Xinjiang, northwest China and Ningxia, northcentral China, Tibet, Beijing and central Asia, as well as Southeast Asian textiles and carvings, many from Ubud, Bali. “I’m not very knowledgeable about Indonesian crafts; when I’m on my travels I buy what I like, what I can afford, and what I can carry! The furniture that I’ve bought, the various Chinese cabinets for example, were due to circumstances and opportunity; I happened to be somewhere, I liked what I saw so I bought them. A tiger hunts alone!” he laughs.“I look for the unique, things with bizarre singularity,” he says, holding up a large decorative jade chop. “And for the Chinese, items tend not to be simply decorative but have more of a metaphysical, mystical or mythical element – made to help the dead in their afterlife or as auspicious gifts, for example.” “Over the years I’ve self-educated through catalogues, blogs, books, exhibitions and through friends like Mae Ho whose shop is near St. Antonio’s church. Through my friendship with her I’ve learned so much, especially about pieces from the Classic era of China. I’ve learned about the famous kilns around different parts of China, about the different materials used by the craftsmen. The chemistry and physics of how ceramics ingredients are mixed and red and their nal reactions are familiar to me due to my line of work,” he explains. Does he keep an inventory? “Yes, and this is divided into months and years. I’ve never counted my pieces but certainly I’m now into the thousands. Much of my collection is now in Portugal; I’ve made several shipments back to Portugal over the years.” And what about sharing his collection with others? Should some of the pieces perhaps be in a museum to be enjoyed by many? A while ago José bought a shop in Sintra originally for his younger brother to have an ofce there, but as that didn’t happen he now plans to use it to display some of his treasures and to set up a club of friends and other like-minded people interested in Asian arts and antiques to gather over coffee or drinks and to share in his wonderful nds. “An atmosphere much like Macau Soul here in Macau – relaxed, friendly”, he smiles.

MC MAY / JUN - 202489he first building in Macau with a lift, the “tallest in the whole of Portugal’s overseas territories”, and according to the creator of James Bond, British author Ian Fleming “the world’s largest gambling and self-indulgence house”. After being closed for some years, Hotel Central has recently reopened its doors. Macau’s history has its own suite with a view of the 20th century.The engineers who took the meticulous measurements to calculate the ex-propriation of land, the demolition of buildings, the alignment of the winding al-leys, the flattening of hills and, finally, the construction of an avenue that would cross the centre of Macau, linking Praia Grande to the Inner Harbour – from the Christian section of the city to the Chinese bazaar - did not imagine that, as well as tearing up the urban fabric of the City of the Name of God, they would also be desecrating the sleep of some fantastic being, who might wake up disturbed from his deep peace.But they would have done well to consider it, because “the foreign engineers who built the first roads and railways in China were more concerned with the beliefs of the Chinese than our priests,” Jaime do Inso explains in his book “Cenas da Vida de Macau” (Scenes from Macau Life), published in 1941, warning that in Chinese mythological traditions, the world is populated by “dragons that exert a manifest influence on mortals, beneficial or terrible, according to the favourable or angry dis-position of the monsters that dwell under the earth or in the waters”.Therefore, prudence would have dictated that “nothing should be done to irri-tate the sleeping beast, and excavations of hills and valleys, without any kind of con-cern, without consulting the feng-sui or spirits of the waters and winds, as practised by the engineering devils of the West who, disrespectfully invested with diabolical tools and apparatus in the bowels of the motherland, was the worst procedure one could have towards the infamous dragons who would not fail, afterwards, to make the harsh weight of their wrath felt on the poor Chinese in the neighbourhood of such drillings...”We may never know if it was the disturbance of this mythological creature during the 10-year construction of Avenida Almeida Ribeiro completed in 1918, (cutting through Rua Central the previous centre of Macau’s life, and known in Chinese precisely as Rua Direita do Cume do Dragão), that caused the chain of vi-cissitudes and tragedies that reached their height during the Japanese invasion of China and the Pacific War (1937-1945). The main road ran along the artery that the Chinese preferred to call San Ma Lou (New Avenue) and Tai Ma Lou (grand avenue), indifferent to the Minister for the Colonies who, in 1913, authorised the expropriation (and subsequent demolition) of 130 houses.But perhaps the spirits weren’t completely displeased; after all, Almeida Ribeiro also gave birth to Macau’s most important commercial district, which has remained so over time. Watching it all, with a privileged place and view, right in the middle of the avenue, was Hotel Central. 90MC MAY / JUN - 2024 A lift to the roof garden In this story, just as there is a Macau before and after Avenida Almeida Ribeiro, there was also another hotel in the same building before Hotel Central, called the President (nothing to do with the other hotel of the same name that still exists in Macau).You have to go back to the 1920s: “The world was witnessing phenomena such as the rise of cinema, the discovery of beaches, the emergence of the ‘pin ups’ and the increasingly reductive role of difference and distance assumed by newspapers,” says Luís Andrade de Sá in “A História na Bagagem” (A History in Luggage), a “chronicle of the old hotels of Macau”, published in 1989. “It’s a decade of vertigo, and the new and strange musical rhythms, as well as the dazzling appearance of aeroplanes, give it a flavour of the speed at which change takes place.”Although it rested in the shadow of Hong Kong’s breathtaking progress, with incipient tourism and no planning or structure, the changes that were shak-ing the world did not pass Macau by. The governor, Artur Tamagnini Barbosa, officiated at the ceremony which opened 80 rooms and ten lounges and “ushered in a new era in the hotel industry”, in which, Andrade de Sá notes, “for the first time a building of similar dimensions was built to function exclusively as a hotel”. Macau now had its first skyscraper.“On that day and in that place, Macau also saw its first system of electric lifts which, in a minute, went from the entrance to the roof garden, where you could enjoy a magnificent and airy view.” Rumour has it that there was a rush to try out the mod-ern facility. “But the biggest surprise the hotel had in store for the public was undoubt-edly its cinema, the President Cinematograph, which seated four hundred people.” From President to Grand Central HotelDespite its impressive new features, the President was to be short-lived. In late 1930, the hotel changed ownership and became the Grand Central Hotel.The new big attraction, the Hou Hing Club, was on the sixth floor, which promised nights of exciting entertainment. “The Hou Hing cabaret,” writes Andrade de Sá, “was the largest dance hall in the city, with private jazz, entertain-ment and billiards. Next to it, the Riviera’s tea dances didn’t exist and the difference was precisely the large number of women who were concentrated in the Central”. As well as the “private dancers”, there were “the harlots from Rua da Felicidade, a communion that didn’t work out, often ending in fisticuffs between the two groups who fought over the customers”. With the scenes of violence, police inspections also became recurrent.“Guests were robbed [sometimes by their own employees] and several times bombs were set off by pirates in an attempt to blackmail the Iun Iun company, the concessionaire of fantan, that there were gambling rooms in that hotel,” recalls “A History in Luggage”.In those days, piracy was part of everyday life and was not limited to the busy waters between Macau and Hong Kong. Gangs prowled Macau’s opium and gambling parlours, always on the lookout for the next scam. Developments such as the Grand Central Hotel became centres of attraction for criminals and the threats never stopped. First, the intimidating letters demanding money in ex-change for protection; then, the bombs that exploded when requests were not met.The image of “noir” Macau, a den of vice and thugs, spread around the world. In September 1932, local newspaper A Voz de Macau published a series of articles on “the leprosy of vices”, including “cursed gambling”, the “vicious sources of gambling”, accused of destroying homes and causing countless victims, often covered by the “protective cloak of silence”. 92MC MAY / JUN - 2024War knocks on the doorIt didn’t take long for decay to take hold of Macau’s new hotels. Not even the pioneering lift escaped. A few years after its debut, which allowed the “vertiginous ascent” of the President’s six floors in just one minute, Luís Andrade de Sá says that breakdowns were frequent. The feeling of insecurity was not only fuelled by threats and bombs. A Voz de Macau warned about the operating conditions of the lift shaft, describing the “happiness” that a group of people felt when they didn’t fall to the ground due to a “sudden breakdown”.But the biggest upheaval, and not at all sudden, began in Macau in mid-1937, with the gradual approach of the Japanese invasion of China. Before that, however, there was still time for another significant change in what was becom-ing a major industry in Macau.In May of that fateful year, the long reign of the Tai Heng company be-gan. For a quarter of a century, until 1961, it held the exclusive rights to oper-ate Fantan, the favourite game of Chinese gamblers. During this period, Central Hotel (as the new owners, Fu Tak Iam and Kou Ho Neng, renamed it) would con-tinue to take centre stage, and even grew from six to nine floors.Other concerns loomed on the horizon, however. “The second Sino-Japanese war”, records Jorge Godinho, in “Os Casinos de Macau” (Macau Casinos), “began on July 7, 1937 - two months after the Tai Heng contract was signed”.On October 18, 1937, the then Portuguese Minister for the Colonies, Francisco Machado, wrote to the President of the Council of Ministers, who was also Minister for Foreign Affairs, António de Oliveira Salazar, expressing “con-cerns and apprehensions about Macau’s financial situation, added to others derived from the political aspect of the Colony in the face of [the] Sino-Japanese conflict”. Machado explained that “several hundred, if not thousands, of refugees, both Portuguese and Chinese, have flocked to Macau from Canton and Shanghai, almost all of them in precarious circumstances, forcing the colony’s government to provide for their subsistence, which has led to considerable unforeseen expenses”. “Uneasiness” was gripping the population, the minister warned, emphasis-ing how gamblers had turned away from lotteries and gaming houses, a major source of revenue for the administration. The wave of refugees was beginning and would grow. In a short time, they would double Macau’s population.On the other side of the Portas do Cerco, the Japanese were implacable. In September 1937, newspaper A Voz de Macau ran with the headline “The Sino-Japanese conflict in Shanghai”, reporting on the attacks being carried out by Japanese aircraft and how “all the borders” of the invaders “have been considerably extended”. They advanced southwards, towards Guangzhou, the main Chinese trading post.The approaching conflict was felt in Macau as a growing and palpable threat. From then on, the war would “greatly affect the course of Macau’s public affairs”, as Joaquim Marques Esparteiro, the 100th governor of Macau, summarised in a 1952 report. The Japanese ended up dominating southern China in October 1938, when they finally took Guangzhou. MC MAY / JUN - 202493 A Land that lacked nothingOn December 8,1941, less than 24 hours after the attack on Pearl Harbour that shocked the United States, the Japanese invaded Hong Kong with the aim of pre-venting the passage of strategic goods to China. On December 12, they occupied the New Territories and the Kowloon peninsula. Six days later, they reached the island that gave its name to the then British colony. On Christmas Day, the gov-ernor of Hong Kong, Sir Mark Young, announced his surrender to the Empire of the Land of the Rising Sun.For Macau, the consequences were immediate. For the next four years, it would be cut off from the world while a conflict raged in the small territory, in a neutrality that had little in the way of peace and quiet.Macau’s ambiguous nature, its contradictions and contrasts, were exposed as never before. A haven for thousands of refugees, Macau was a place to con-spire, collaborate and resist. Survival. It was all or nothing. While some made a profit selling the scarce goods that everyone was looking for, others starved to death on the streets. There was no shortage of cannibalism or lavish banquets.In its compromised neutrality that left the door ajar, Macau became a haven for smugglers and speculators. The Portuguese, Chinese and Japanese all became involved in trade, importing and exporting goods that paid well in Macau or on the other side of the border, where there was an imperative to keep the resistance against the invaders alive. Once the war was over, accounts had to be settled and murders in broad daylight, in the street, were not uncommon.“Macau was thus awash with money and wealth, a land that lacked nothing, not even the beautiful women who sold themselves for gold, boasting a spectacular life of pleasure and joy that was undoubtedly a shameful affront to humanity, who were en-during the fury of a ferocious war without quarter, suffering the most atrocious misery in a hallucinated and mad world,” recalls António de Andrade e Silva in his book “Eu Estive em Macau Durante a Guerra” (I Was in Macau During the War), written in 1946 but only published in 1991.There was no shortage of delicacies such as shark’s fin soup or swallow’s nests at the lavish meals that never stopped being organised. All accompanied by the best French wines, to the sound of orchestras formed by Filipino musicians who had fled Hong Kong.“I had great parties almost every night,” Stanley Ho, one of the men who was able to seize the opportunities that the strange circumstances of the war provid-ed, would later recall. “Bohemian nights” and misery in Hotel Central If Hotel Central had a guest book of dishonour, its pages would be full of Japanese names. It was there that the military and special services agents gathered in a Macau that was only unofficially occupied.On a typical day in a city besieged by war, describes Andrade e Silva, who captained the Port of Macau, “as usual, the Japanese, who had made Macau their headquarters and tourist resort, spent the night at Hotel Central, where they could enjoy all the pleasures that the Colony could offer at this time of tragedy - good Chinese food, drinks, gambling and women...”. In the city, the Japanese felt “at home, treated with the indulgence of a neutral people who receive through them ev-erything that is indispensable to life... in exchange for blood”.The “bohemian” nights at Hotel Central began with abundant dinners ac-companied by “courteous and permanent toasts”. Towards the end, stomachs re-sented the excesses and “some guests left the Hotel in irregular curves, often after vi-olent conflicts in the ballroom, with ridiculous displays of valour, pistol in hand. They would then appear in the street drunk and unconscious, in a horrible offence to the misery of the starving people who, at the door of the Hotel, were waiting for a hand-out and were kicked out.” Andrade e Silva says that “on one of these occasions, the misery and hunger of a human being was revealed: two cadaverous boys, who were waiting on the pavement for a handout from some grandparents, threw themselves wildly on the disgusting vomit, and with their hands on the ground, approached the half-digested food, eating like dogs that horrible mixture impregnated with alcohol”.There seemed to be no limit to the descent into the depths. Historian Manuel Teixeira guarantees that, during the war, Hotel Central “bought children” and, after fattening them up, “cooked and served them to customers”. According to Gabriel Teixeira, who governed Macau during this period, 27,000 people died in the city in the first year of the war. In the previous decade, mortality had fluctu-ated between 3,000 and 4,000 a year.Alexandre Gomes dos Santos, the doctor who ran Macau’s Health Services at the time, said in a 1946 report that “every morning, the police and even private individuals would ask the Central Medical Centre to remove dozens of corpses found under the city’s arcades, among the starving people who took refuge there at night, fleeing from China at war”. Crimes and associates Somehow, life had to go on. In Macau, that meant that gambling couldn’t stop. There were bets that fortunes would change. Hotel Central’s croupiers couldn’t catch a break and the criminal gangs, which were proliferating in the atmosphere of general confusion, found a source of appetising wealth in Macau’s most pop-ular hotel.On Christmas Eve 1939, Hotel Central was the target of “a terrible bomb ex-plosion”, reported A Voz de Macau, stating that “the house was full, with visitors coming from Hong Kong and many parts of Guangdong”. In the panic, “hundreds of people fled” and “many suffered injuries”. Fu Tak Iam, the owner of Hotel Central, was in the hotel at the time.The richest man in Macau (and his hotel) continued to be a favourite target of the gangs and was even kidnapped for months in 1946, having lost part of an ear, cut off as evidence in a ransom demand. These were the accounts that the war had left unresolved, and which were taking their toll as Macau tried to restore normality after the conflict ended. “The big orchestras in the hotels were replaced by local elements without this diminishing the turnout at the cabarets,” observes Luís Andrade de Sá. The music was different, but the spirit remained the same.In October 1949, Notícias de Macau reported that “sinful Macau” was “now the cleanest city in the Far East” and was “on the way to complete regeneration”. This was the conclusion of a foreign reporter from the Washington Times - Herald, who assured that “before the war, stories abounded about Macau, an open city, with its opium chasms, gambling hells and dangerous neighbourhoods”. On the contrary, “today, the Portuguese administration has waged a continuous war on opium smok-ers, has torn down gambling houses and has made the smuggling trade more discreet”.At Hotel Central, the American newspaper guaranteed, “anyone can stroll freely through the halls of the tall building, even on Saturdays and Sundays, without encountering players who outnumber the employees”. There was nothing to fear. “Macau today is the cleanest, quietest and coolest city in the entire Far East. The unique curves of its cobbled streets are guarded day and night by police patrols and troops armed with rifles, pistols and hand-held machine guns. Its three Portuguese-language newspapers are censored. Labour associations are unwelcome. The power of the Portuguese is feared. There is less risk there than in neighbouring Hong Kong.” The “biggest ‘house of ill repute’ in the world” In the 1940s and the following decade, before and after the war, Hotel Central was the centre of a city whose prosperity sometimes depended on trade with the Japanese when they occupied mainland China, or, after the war, relied on smug-gling to Communist China.Times may have been different after the war, but Macau’s largest hotel re-tained its reputation. After all, the city was “famous for the first lighthouse built on the entire coast of China”, for the “giant ruins of St Paul’s Church, and finally, for the largest ‘house of ill repute’ in the world”. This is how Ian Fleming, creator and author of James Bond, introduced the world to Hotel Central, “the world’s largest gambling and self-indulgence parlour”.Fleming visited Macau in 1959 when he was preparing Thrilling Cities, a trav-el book that he would publish in 1963.In the chapter dedicated to Macau, Hotel Central is the main character, only overshadowed by the brilliance radiated by the “gold king of the Orient”, the “enigmatic Doctor Lobo of Villa Verde in Macau”, to whom Fleming felt “irresistibly drawn”, with “the internal Geiger counter of a thriller writer working furiously”.“It’s not exactly a hotel. It’s a nine-storey skyscraper, by far the largest build-ing in Macau, and it’s dedicated exclusively to so-called human vices. It has another unique feature. The higher you go up the building, the prettier and more expensive the girls, the higher the stakes at the gaming tables and the better the music,” Fleming wrote.On the ground floor, the ordinary Chinese labourers, who filled the streets and alleys of Macau in an incessant tingling, could “choose a girl of his class and play for pennies, placing his bet on a fishing rod contraption through a hole in the floor to the gaming tables below”. Those with deeper pockets could “climb through various skies until they reached the earthly paradise on the sixth floor. Above this are the bedrooms”.“The sixth floor was spacious and well-lit, with the kind of pseudo-modern décor you’d find in a once expensive French café that’s already in decline. Having read about fantan back in my Doctor Fu-Manchu days, when I assumed it was the most sinful game on the face of the earth, I headed straight for the fantan table, exchanged a hundred Hong Kong dollars for chips and sat down firmly at the sparsely occupied table next to the dealer, an almond-eyed sorceress dressed in a green cabaña. On the other side of the table, next to the chip rack, was a similarly dressed girl with an air of authority. She ran the game, while the girl on my right made the necessary moves.”The evening (and the game) proceeded. “While I happily lost my hundred dol-lars, enjoying the gentle ritual, the authoritative girl opposite was never wrong in guessing the winning number from the pile. It was something extraordinary, and the girl smiled appreciatively when she heard my polite applause.” After this “delicate piracy”, time for other vices.It was time to head to the dance hall. “The place had a central, well-lit dance floor and a well-disciplined eight-piece combo playing good but conventional jazz. Twenty or thirty ‘hostesses’ sat in the shadows around the walls. Dick and I settled on a comfortable stool in the sparsely frequented room and ordered gin and tonics and two hostesses. Mine was called Garbo, ‘the same name as the film star’, he explained.The evening was still in its infancy, but “as the reader will be relieved to know, it ended decently in a little snowstorm of twenty-dollar bills and protestations of un-dying love, and Dick and I left the magnificent Central Hotel on a wave of virtue and elation, showering blessings on Mr Fu [Tak Iam] and his much-maligned nine-storey palace of ill repute”. The end of an era Ian Fleming didn’t know it, but he was actually saying goodbye to the golden age of Hotel Central, and to a certain era - which undoubtedly had its heyday - of Macau.By the time Thrilling Cities was published, Tai Heng’s Fantan operations had already come to an end. Also in 1961, a public tender decided that the concession for the lucrative exclusive business would be awarded to Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau. New masters were appearing on the city’s horizon. Among them was Stanley Ho, who would personify the new era that Macau was entering.The concession contract, signed in March 1962, provided for “three minimum obligations”, says Jorge Godinho. “The first was to build a ‘model casino’ and the second was to build a ‘luxury hotel’.” It can be deduced that the “qualification of the future casino was obviously a criticism of the operation that had taken place at Hotel Central, which, in the opinion of the Administration, was not at all a model to follow.
