The Mayor of Barnet Presents Virtually 25th April 2020

Page 2

Thank You All Message from the Mayor of Barnet 2019 2020 I hope this electronic brochure for the virtual Razzle Dazzle Gala dinner finds you well and coping with the current situation The Gala Committee have been planning this finale dinner for over nine months and it was going to be an incredible evening with wonderful food entertainment and an inspirational guest speaker Clive Coleman

Page 3

Clive is the BBC Legal Correspondent as well as being a screen writer and columnist We had a professional dancer booked who was going to show us all how to dance the Charleston to the 1920 s band The catering team at Middlesex University had also produced the most amazing 1920 s menu So for everyone involved the cancellation of the Gala dinner was enormously disappointing Our aim was to raise 10 000 at the dinner as we all know how much this would mean to the two charities Cherry Lodge Cancer Care and HomeStart Barnet Both charities have explained in the brochure what part they play in supporting the Barnet population Each charity has a very different remit one of the main reasons I chose to support them this year Covid 19 has had many far reaching consequences that will have longterm implications However both charities are operating daily to support individuals and their families over this terrible period

Page 4

There are so many people that I want to thank and too many to include here I have been so fortunate to have had Richard my husband by my side at most events always encouraging me and to all those not mentioned in the brochure you have allowed us to raise a huge sum of money Thank you to everyone who has supported the many events we have held during the Mayoral year I hope I haven t lost too many friends badgering you for help and money A huge thanks also go to Angela Richardson from the Mayor s office who has said yes that s a good idea let s see how we can do it when I come up with yet another suggestion Also thank you to Valerie Davis and Tim Kellman from the Mayor s support team I have been extremely privileged to have had the support of the Middlesex University Team who have gone beyond the call of duty to help with everything that I asked them I will forever be grateful

Page 5

Page 6

However special thanks needs to go to my amazing Chairman Eileen Eskenzi who has been at the helm of the Charity Committee She has tirelessly arranged the smooth organisation and success of the large number of fantastic fundraisers that we have held from the beginning of my Mayoralty Eileen has been our own Eventbrite human emailing everyone personally over meal choices where to park and so many other sometimes crazy inquiries She also happens to be my lovely mother and friend Each member of my committee have been pivotal in making this year such a success You have all created memories that I will be able to keep forever Each of you mean a lot to me and when you agreed to be on the committee I knew the year would not only be fun but successful

Page 7

Of the many things we did I have to say shouting out at the top of my voice as we drove past the Houses of Parliament on top of a float for the London New Year s Day Parade will stand out So many organisations came together on the day dressing the float standing for hours in the cold and then dancing to the song Happy again and again and again and importantly gaining 6 000 for the charities This event summarises for me how everyone worked literally for months for a few hours but the result was just incredible It has been one amazing year Keep healthy Caroline Stock

It is testament to her character that she has found such an interesting and engaging way to ensure the ongoing support and commitment to raise much needed funds for her two charities HomeStart Barnet and Cherry Lodge Cancer Care I have been deeply moved by our community s collective response to the challenges of COVID 19 From within the University and across Barnet I ve seen some outstanding examples of innovation collaboration and compassion to protect the safety and wellbeing of students staff and Barnet residents This online event is a shining example of how the community are pulling together to help those most in need Funds raised will provide vital support for the teams at Cherry Lodge Cancer Care and HomeStart Barnet to continue their work supporting patients in isolation and young people whose family support network may no longer be there

Home Start Barnet has been supporting families facing issues such as loneliness isolation financial difficulties anxiety post natal depression ill health or the threat of violence for more than 20 years Last year we supported almost 1 400 children young people and families to grow in confidence strengthen their relationships within the family and forge links with the local community We know that early intervention can significantly increase a child s chances of growing up happy and healthy improving the wellbeing of their community and lessening their burden on local services Our services include one to one home visiting by a trained volunteer and encouraging parents with young children to attend family groups outings and events Clearly we have had to adapt our services in the current national emergency However we are still supporting every one of our families through remote contact and will continue to take on new referrals This emergency makes our services even more vital now and in the future We are absolutely delighted to have been selected as one of the Mayor s chosen charities this year and would like to take this opportunity to thank her for the amazing support that she has given us over the last 12 months Julia Roberts Chair of Trustees Home Start Barnet
