It depends on the context, your existingcredit history and what rates competinglenders are willing to offer you based onyour perceived credit risk. For example, there are multiple points atwhich you can potentially negotiate a lowerinterest rate on a mortgage. When you’reshopping around for mortgages, you canapproach lenders with rates you’ve qualifiedfor from other loan originators. You might do this if you’d prefer to keepyour mortgage with your existing bank orcredit union even though the initial interestrate, they offered you wasn’t verycompetitive. Reach out to them withevidence that another lender is beating theirrate and they may adjust what they’reoffering to keep you as a loyal customer. You can also try to negotiate a lower rate oncredit cards but doing so successfully isn’talways easy. There are certain historicalfactors that will likely influence the creditcard company’s receptiveness. Customerswho have been around for a long time orwho have relatively solid records ofregularly making payments are more likelyto achieve favorable results.Credit card companies make money offpeople who carry a balance on their cards, but they can potentially lose money if younever pay them back. If you temporarilygetting a lower rate increases the likelihoodof them getting paid back, they might beamenable to negotiations. Some mortgage lenders might offer“discount points.” These let you put moremoney down to get a slightly lowerinterest rate for the life of the loan. Theequation is usually one percent extradown for 0.25 percent off your interestrate. Even relatively small decreases ininterest at the start of your loan can saveyou tens of thousands of dollars duringthe 30-year life of a loan. There’s generally a parallel betweenwhat you’re willing to put down and therates for which you’ll qualify. If you canafford it, increasing your down paymentcan have long-term benefits for yourinterest rate.Is There a Way to Negotiate LowerInterest Rates With Creditors?Mortgage Discount PointsNegotiating With Credit Card CompaniesSome of the tactics that work in mortgageinterest rate negotiations can also beeffective when dealing with credit cardcompanies. Going into negotiations withproof that you qualify for lower rateselsewhere can give you a lot of leverageduring negotiations. You shouldn’t try to mislead credit cardrepresentatives during negotiations. Theycan easily pull your credit history orinvestigate the rates you claim you couldget elsewhere. Dishonesty may damageyour reputation with the credit cardcompany.
There’s also a right and a wrong way toconduct negotiations in thesecircumstances. The frontline customerservice reps you speak with likely don’thave the authority to unilaterally grant youa lower interest rate on your credit carddebt. Ask for a supervisor or try to identifysomeone with the authority to authorizethose types of changes. Also avoid being rude to the customerservice representatives. These can bestressful issues, but the person on theother end of the line isn’t the cause of yourinterest rate. Being impatient andcombative can stall your negotiations. If you have multiple cards, start yournegotiations with the companies you’veused longest. The trust you’ve built overthe years, if you’ve historically been goodat paying at least the minimum eachmonth, may help in your negotiations. Some credit card companies are amenableto offering temporary breaks on credit cardrates if you can make the case that thelower rate will help you get back on track.Get Help With Your Retirement Savings andLong-Term Investment StrategiesThe team at Fullerton Financial Planning arededicated to helping Phoenix saversprepare for the future. Bunk Bed BuildAnd Delivery!!Have you ever experienced a moment in your life where you gave something of yourself and felt as though you had been thereceiver instead of the giver? This was our experience when Fullerton Financials’ group of volunteers went to the Navajo Nation,Arizona to put their hands on the plow and deliver bunk beds, food, water, clothes, and shoes to the native Navajo tribe and theirchildren. Working alongside an incredible group of volunteers from Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Pure Heart Church, and Salad andGo, FFP was able to participate in a loving act of compassion and humble servitude. Our volunteers returned home with fullhearts and eager minds to share their stories with co-workers, friends, family, and church families. Matthew 5:16 reads “ In thesame way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” We hopethe light of God shone brightly through the love of people and we look forward to participating in another outreach soon!
