From the EditorEmail: editor@leyburnlife.co.uk Website: leyburnlife.co.uk3Good Aernoon Editor. Thank you for publishing our request for entertainers in the April edion of Leyburn Life. The residents of Kirkwood Hall would like to thank David Metcalfe and Metcalfe Farms for their kind and generous donaon of a projector. This will enhance the programme of acvies to include showing films, having illustrated talks and quizzes. Above all it will bring entertainment to many who are less mobile and rely on in house events to support their social life. This wonderful gi will bring much pleasure to many from now on. Thank you. Kirkwood Hall Tuesday Birthday Club Members would like to thank their guest speaker Anne Newstead who spoke about her life and career in the Police Force. Anne shared some of the many challenging, funny and sad experiences whilst serving on the front line of policing. One memorable situaon sent her delving into the law books to find the right act to charge a suspect whom she had arrested. Eventually it turned out to be an act going back to 1361, which is sll in force today. We all enjoyed hosng Anne and listening to her life given over to protecng and keeping communies safe. Thank you Anne. We would be pleased to hear from anyone who is willing to entertain our group with their experiences or talents. Please contact John Asher 01969 326406 or email asherayside@googlemail.com I am inspired by Ruby Simpson’s article in April 2025’s Leyburn Life to write about my experiences as a civilian child in pseudo/military setting. In 1955 my father, a teacher, took up the post of Deputy Head of St David’s primary school in the Egyptian Canal Zone following the British Army’s withdrawal. On 10 January together with my mother and two brothers, we travelled out from Blackbush Airport, via Malta. We were only there for seven months, just long enough for my 10th birthday, a period when my baby sister was born. On 10th August all changed with the Suez Crisis meaning families were evacuated - if I remember via Athens, Vienna and Amsterdam. We then spent a year in Paignton whilst our house was rented out. Fast forward to November 1957 and we found ourselves in Malta where my father was Deputy Head of the RAF primary school in Luqa. In August 1960 we found ourselves back home on Mersea Island. So from age 9 to 14 my education was all over the place e but the places, but do I regret it? No! They are experiences I never regretted. I don’t know if military families go on tours of duty overseas these days, but from those I came into contact with Hong Kong and Cyprus were worth a mention. Anna Thomas Emails received in appreciation for items and articles in the April magazine. Friday, 4 April, was a beautiful day outdoor collection day for the charity, Marie Curie, organised by the Wensleydale Fundraising Group. The collection raised £550.26, and this amount will provide just over 2.5 nights of nursing care in the home of some with a terminal illness. This nursing service is a great support for everyone in that situation when living in a rural area like Wensleydale. Hospital and Hospice facilities are at a distance, transport links aren’t easy, and put added stress to already difficult situations, so care in the home helps to smooth the path somewhat. There are still boxes of daffodils available in a number of pubs, shops, etc. around the area & will be until after Easter. Please drop your loose change into these. All the pennies add up. Thanks to everyone who supports us, especially Scott’s Wright’s office in Leyburn that provides the Fundraising Group with a base for street collections.

11What’s been happening at Leyburn Primary School this month? We have had some very generous donations to our OPAL provision and the children have loved playing with the vast array of kitchen implements. The fence is proving to be very useful! It is wonderful what the children have done with the donations, including a developing a very large outdoor restaurant. Rocksteady Concert At the end of term, we had a real treat in the form of our very own Rocksteady Concert where we saw a glimpse of the musical stars of the future. Watch this space! Dental Programme We are taking part in the Humber and North Yorkshire Tooth Brushing and Fluoride Varnish Programme which started at the beginning of April. Here are the toothbrushes, ready for action! Easter news Our oldest children were treated to an Eastertingle experience at the Methodist Church where they re-enacted the events of the Easter Week. It really helped to bring the story alive. We also experienced another aspect of Easter! All of the children and staff received an Easter egg from our very kind donor, delivered by Campbell’s. For some of the children, it will be their first memory of Easter and what a memory to have. Thank you. We hope that everyone has had a wonderful Easter and that the weather continues to be kind to us.

The Wensleydale School and Sixth Form LeyburnFrom Headteacher Julia Polley15 Local businesses dig deep to support Leyburn school’s thriving Gardening Club The Wensleydale School’s Gardening Club is flourishing thanks to the generous backing of two local businesses, Metcalfe Farms and The Forbidden Corner. Both organisations have stepped in to provide essential donations that have equipped students to grow their skills, teamwork, and confidence. Metcalfe Farms has donated 12 fleece jackets, 20 high-vis jackets, pallets, screws, and a load of manure to the club. Meanwhile, The Forbidden Corner has gifted greenhouses and plastic pots, giving students the tools they need to expand their gardening projects. Philip Metcalfe of Metcalfe Farms says, “We had no hesitation donating the clothing and other items upon request to The Wensleydale School Gardening Club. Metcalfe Farms tries to support as many projects in the local community as possible, especially where young people are involved, which is important to us." Running four days a week during enrichment time, the club has become a hub of practical learning and creativity. Led by five committed Year 10 Garden Leaders, 15-20 students from all year groups come together daily to tackle projects such as building hedgehog houses, taking cuttings, and selling seeds to staff. Students learn how to use drills, saws, and other tools, and develop teamwork and communication skills, regardless of ability level. Kate Huitson, Teacher of Geography and Gardening Club lead, says, “What started as an experiment after Covid, when we planted a memorial garden for James Ashcroft, has grown into something truly special. Gardening has provided a space for students to reconnect, learn new skills, and take pride in their work. And it’s wonderful to see them bringing these skills home and into the community.” Beyond the school gates, the students’ green fingers are making an impact. Last year, they planted 1,000 crocus bulbs along the embankment opposite the school for Purple Uniform Day to raise awareness for polio, and are working with a local expert on wildflower planting. A collaboration with the National Parks is also in the pipeline, and a visit to Metcalfe Farms is planned for summer. Students are also taking their new-found skills home, working on gardens with their families, bringing in equipment from home, and even sharing their knowledge at local youth clubs. Call for Donations: Help Complete the Greenhouse! The Gardening Club’s latest project involves joining two greenhouses together to create one giant structure. However, they urgently need donations of sheets of perspex to complete it before the winds blow out the remaining panes of glass. If any businesses can provide perspex sheets or have unused COVID screens they no longer need, the school would be grateful. These materials will allow students to glaze the roof and walls, making the greenhouse windproof and ensuring their gardening projects can thrive year-round. If you can help with donations or would like to support the Gardening Club in any way, please contact Kate Huitson at kate.huitson@wensleydaleschool.net.

Dolly Parton sang about working 9 to 5 writer Annie Dillard famously said, “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” which makes sense as a one third of our life can be spent at work. The work‐ life balance is something we chase. Severance is a series on Apple TV that takes these ideas and then puts a dark spin on them. Mark works at Lumon (a company whose very name paradoxically sounds enlightening). They operate using a medical procedure called severance, meaning once the designated work area is entered, you have no memory of what had happened outside. Your whole existence therefore revolves around work and your fellow ‘severed’ employees. This seems a perfect soluon for Mark who is grieving the loss of his wife in an accident, therefore severance allows him to funcon at work without painful memories. Nothing is simple of course, and at Lumon, everything seems designed to confuse, from the mysterious numbers on the workers' computer screens, to the odd rewards such as waffle pares, and bizarre marching bands. Beneath the veneer of office parons , mazes of white corridors and personalised engraved paperweights, something disturbing lurks, like a memory in their subconscious. The team of 4 argue, bond then argue again but all ulmately agree they want to know what is happening on the outside. Like Eden before the fall, everything is simple, unl they begin to crave knowledge, meanwhile their ‘oues’ know nothing of this quiet rebellion. Soul mates at work become strangers in the outside world but it seems this dissecon means both sides of their personalies are missing out. Ulmately it’s not a good idea to give a mega corporaon total control, a lesson for the mes we live in: knowledge is power, and devolving responsibility is akin to scking your head in the sand while all around are using theirs. The plot twists in Severance are breathtaking and a humdrum existence suddenly becomes wild and perilous, it's a gripping tale with many layers of mystery. The Novel 'Then We Came to the End’ by Joshua Ferris is also mainly set in a large office where workers in adversing are fixated on office gossip, pey confrontaons and a determinaon to keep their jobs at everyone else’s expense. At first the office landscape seems most important and there is a tribal sense of unity. One worker even bequeathed a Totem Pole to his colleague (the quintessenal clan‐like gi). Similar to Severance, existence outside the office is blanked, as their allegiance and communal hive mind is overwhelmingly focused on the work dynamic. But real life percolates into their work and dramas, tragedies and reconciliaons all happen, although eventually the workers find new paths, (or new offices), and are le reminiscing about the good old days, forgeng the traumas and squabbling, instead they look back with rose nted glasses at the halcyon work days of their past. “Pleasure in the job puts perfecon in the work,” said Aristotle, and I wouldn’t argue with him.17Work to Live or Live to Work? 19Hello again everyone. We hope you are enjoying Spring as much as we are. At the time of writing, we are busy rehearsing for our upcoming concert in Harmby Village Hall. Then we will be concentrating on the next concert, one of the biggest in our calendar. As part of the popular and prestigious Swaledale Festival, we will be performing our exciting pro-gramme at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 28th May in the beautiful St Andrew's Church, Aysgarth. Tickets can be purchased online at www.swalefest.org. Before that though, we have other things to do. As already announced in this magazine, Leyburn is celebrating 80 years since VE day with various events planned for Victory in Europe day itself, the 8th May, including reveille and last post, and also a concert featuring music and speech in St Matthew's Church on Sunday the 11th May. We are proud and privileged to be taking part in these activities. I wondered how brass bands fared during the war, so I did some research. Obviously some brass bands had to stop because so many players were called up or volunteered but other bands managed to carry on with fewer members. Many began leading parades for their local Home Guard companies and sometimes players of several depleted bands would get together and make up a Home Guard band. There were also National and Auxiliary Fire Service bands, Civil Defence bands etc. Bands provided music for military parades and they also gave civilian concerts. There were even some brass band contests still. So it seems the Brass Band world kept calm and carried on throughout this horrendous period. Shockingly, areas of our present world are still plagued by war. Let us hope there will never be a World War 3! Sandy
20 Welcome to May. We expect you are all busy in the garden and feeling more energised now the weather is improving so we thought it was a good idea to mention our volunteering opportunities! Gardening first because the gardeners are preparing for the Plant Fayre on Friday and Saturday, 9th & 10th May, 10am - 4pm so would welcome any help with tasks in the Community Garden and re-potting any donations of any thinning out of plants from your own gardens. Do you like cooking? Could you help with preparing light meals and a pudding for our Lunch Club and Tuesday Club? Would you be willing to serve in our cafe/bar for cinema and events? Do you like watching cinema on a big screen? Would you be able to help with operating the film projection equipment, act as Front of House, sell tickets? Are you available on Monday mornings for a regular reception slot or to cover for holiday periods including some after-noons? Do you like decorating? Would you be able to do some simple maintenance? Do you like cleaning? A little light cleaning and tidying up is always required. Would you like to help people in our Digital Support sessions? If interested in any of these, get in touch, some would be regular sessions of 1 or 2-3 hours, some as and when required. There are three support sessions in May: Carer's Plus, a drop in session, Thursday 1st May, 10-12; Digital Support, Tuesdays, 6th May 3-4pm; 13th & 27th May, 10-12; Advice and Support, Staying Healthy, Independent & Connected, Friday, 9th May, 10am to noon.
