Chair LetterScott PalermoA Skeetz ProductionPage 5ScottHi Friends,We are one-third of the way through the year and I don’t know if I could be more pleased with the way things are goingwith the chamber! We are welcoming many new members, thanks, in large part, to our Ambassador team and with theaddition of Laura Herrmann to our staff. Our attendance at our “you don’t want to miss” luncheons has been great—especially to honor our extraordinary students receiving the GNCC Scholarships last month. We also held our 10th AnnualMusic Trivia night in April and I have to say, I think it was probably the best one ever!Speaking of events, our Annual Golf Tournament is Friday, June 7 and registration is now open. Get your foursome enteredquickly because this event always fills up. If you want to participate but don’t play, there are great opportunities forsponsorship or volunteers. Contact the Chamber office if you are interested! This is traditionally the busiest time of the year for my business and, in addition to work, we have our son graduating, ourexchange student preparing to go home and we now assist in caregiving for my dad.My dad has dementia. We knew something was up during Covid but didn’t get a diagnosis until November of 2022. He hassome days that are better than others but we are seeing an overall decline over time. I would never say it is a burden torun him to appointments or take care of his errands but it is more difficult to see him this way.My dad drove a VW Beetle for as long as I could recall and I have great memories of North County in the car. I rememberbunches of kids packed in that tiny automobile going to ballgames at St. Ferdinand, Dunegant and Koch Parks or taking usto soccer games a Twellmans and the Dellwood Rec Center. My first experience at Steak n’ Shake was after one of hissoccer games when it started raining and we had to stall to go home so he would get in trouble from my mom. I rememberwhen a bee got in the “bug”, as he called it, leaving a picnic at Sunset Park; trips to the 270-Drive-In Theatre with ourWhite Castles and riding down Howdershell Road with all the windows down and him singing “Hey Jude”—the only songhe knew half the words to—at the top of his lungs.I learned to drive stick in that car and drove it through our fence while doing so. I took my first solo drive to Aloha Skatingrink after I got my license and had to walk about a mile to my first day at STLCC after it broke down on Pershall Road. That old VW finally broke down for good and we got him a shiny new red one in 2017. It wasn’t the same but he still lovedhis bug. He hasn’t been able to drive since the diagnosis and my mom and sibs have been on me for some time to take thecar because they knew it meant a lot to me but I just haven’t had the heart because it felt like I was giving up on him. This week, however, I broke down and brought it home. I thought that I could use it to carry him to his appointments andrun his errands but more than anything, I wanted to drive it to honor him and the memories of him that I have—that hedoesn’t anymore…So if you see me driving down Howdershell, with the windows rolled down, singing “Hey Jude” at the top of my lungs--please join in—you know the words!Keep it REAL,
