May 2024• 5BulletinKeep Reading!Carole I hope that everyone is now thinking about continuous professional development (CPD) more, after the discussion of it in last month’s Bulletin. I should have also reminded you that all your CPD can be recorded on MySociety, which is available on the IAT website – under the drop down “For Members” menu. So again, this month we have more articles which could be considered CPD, as well a few directions to some websites also containing further reading. Perhaps the rst place to start is Dispatches (pages 12 – 13), where there is a questionnaire for all technologists / technicians covering our role in planning and conducting experiments involving animals. I believe it is vital for us to have a say in these things and advocate for animals, after all we cannot complain about our roles if we have not used every avenue to make our voices heard. The survey may also highlight gaps in your knowledge that CPD can help with. The Branch Liaison Committee is also looking for the 100 great improvementsthat have been made in the industry. Perhaps some of your development has led to better Animal Welfare? If so, why not share them? This is mentioned in Dispatches, but also has pages on 4 and 6, whereby scanning the QR codeleads to information about submitting your ideas. The nal article I want to share with you is a story about two animal rights extremists, who were found not guilty of ‘psychological warfare’ on a victim by shouting obscenities at him on a daily basis and confronting him, his wife and child in a pub. There is nothing to commend this extremist abhorrent behaviour, the like of which I thought was consigned to history (page 7). Everyone will be relieved to be told I will not be discussing CPD next month – as we are covering Congress, an excellent way of obtaining all kinds of education. In the meantime. . .Dear Readers

BulletinMay 2024 • 7 UK Animal Rights Extremists Two notorious UK animal rights extremists have been cleared of ‘psychological warfare’ on a businessman after a jury was not informed of their criminal past. Mel Broughton and David Blenkinsop have both served prior jail sentences for their role in bombing campaigns on animal research facilities. Broughton had a decade-long sentence for planting homemade petrol bombs at Oxford University and Blenkinsop has previous convictions for participating in a bombing campaign as well as attacking the boss of the animal research laboratory Huntingdon Life Sciences with a pickaxe handle. In the current case, the defendants confronted the victim, his wife and eight-year-old son at a pub. Protestors shouted obscenities at him daily, causing him to feel unsafe and terrified for his family. Broughton and Blenkinsop had also placed cameras disguised as rocks outside his premises and even followed one staff member to the gym and to his home. But both were cleared by the jury after claiming they were attempting to “expose offences committed against animals”. The jury was not informed of the defendants’ previous convictions and according to The Daily Telegraph, there are now calls for stronger laws to protect those involved in research on lifesaving drugs from stalking and harassment. UAR worked with The Daily Telegraph and provided a comment for the article: “The victims have placed their faith in the police and the courts and have been badly let down. The tactics of the protest may be different this time around but they still amount to manipulation and intimidation. Recent medical breakthroughs, such as new drugs for Alzheimer’s, are the direct result of animal research”.“This research is sanctioned by society and approved by mixed-membership ethics committees as a worthwhile exemption to our blanket ban on such experiments. It’s not for self-appointed moral arbiters to declare that they alone get to choose the limits of ethical science, or to use force and intimidation if they don’t get their way. I’m sure that activists across many different issues will regard this case with interest as to the limits of legal protest. Perhaps if MPs are considering new powers to protect themselves from harassment and intimidation, they might consider extending those to the rest of the UK population”.You can read the full Telegraph article here: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/03/17/animal-rights-extremists-cleared-of-psychological-warfare/Run with permission from UAR.
Mental Health AwarenessLet’s Talk about ... Mental Healthwww.iat.org.ukInstitute of Animal TechnologyCOUNCILEDI GroupEquity, Diversity and InclusionIt’s OK … NOT TO BE OKAY …Let’s Talk about ... Mental HealthManaging Mental Health at work is important for employers and employeesAccording to the Mental Health Foundation, one in six employees experience mental ill health each year. The impact of the pandemic, the increasing cost of living and changes to working practices mean that it is now more important than ever, to put workplace mental health at the top of workplace agendas. Mental health problems can happen suddenly, because of a specific event in someone’s life, or it can build up gradually over time. There are many types of mental health conditions, for example:l Depressionl Anxiety l Bipolar disorder l SchizophreniaStress is not classed as a medical condition. but it can still be serious and, cause or make worse, other mental health conditions. For example, if you have stress over a long time, this might lead to anxiety or depression.Spotting possible signs of a mental health problem:Not everyone will show obvious signs of poor mental health and it’s important not to make assumptions. But some possible signs at work include:l appearing tired, anxious or withdrawnl increase in sickness absence or being late to workl changes in the standard of a person’s work or focus on tasksl being less interested in tasks they previously enjoyedl changes in usual behaviour, mood or how the person behaves with the people they work withIt can be harder to spot these signs if employees are working from home. It is important for employers to regularly ask their employees how they are doing. They should help them to be open and honest about how they are feeling.Looking after your own mental healthIt is important to look after your mental health at work, ways to support your own mental health are:l Stay in contact with people – talk to people you work with or friends about how you are feeling. Talk to others in your facility, Mental Health First Aiders, Occupational Health, Your Manager.l Have a routine so you plan in advance what you’ll be doing each day.l Keep active and exercise.l Make time for activities you enjoy.l Reflect on what helps you feel more positive and what does not.Looking after Employees’ Mental HealthThe sooner an employer becomes aware of a mental health problem, the sooner they can provide help and support.Whilst many of the reasons behind poor mental health will not be work-related, evidence shows that employers who, reduce stigma, improve management capability and increase self-support, markedly help their employees to remain productive and stay in work. What can I do as a manager?l Be open in facilities about Mental Health awareness.l Talk regularly with individuals and teams.l Address workload issues and add additional rest breaks if required.l Organise and promote positive social events e.g. cake in the tearoom, walks at lunchtime.l Recognise signs of mental ill health and take advice on how to support staff members, this may be from HR, Occupational Health, organisational support networks or Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) in the Organisation.References and for further support and informationhttps://www.acas.org.uk/supporting-mental-health-workplacehttps://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/explore-mental-health/a-z-topics/online-mental-health-supporthttps://www.rethink.org/help-in-your-area/support-groups/

BulletinMay 2024 • 13100 Great ImprovementsThe IAT Branch Liaison Committee need your help. They are looking for 100 great improvements that have been made in the industry and these could be based on anything. We all do things everyday to improve the welfare of the animals we care for, sustainability, as well as changes which have had positive impacts on the staff and operations of the team. We believe it is important these ideas are collated and published so people can see the great achievements that have been made as well as to see if any of these ideas could be used in their own place of work.See pages 4 and 6 for further information.IAT NACWO SurveyWe are launching an initiative for NACWOs, or those delegated the responsibility, and we need your input. We are looking to understand the current working environment for NACWOs; both good and bad. To start this project off we would like to collect comments from NACWOs. These comments will be viewed as pilot information which will then assist a social scientist to create a set of questions. The responses in these questions will form the basis for more in-depth key informant interviews from a broad selection of chosen NACWOs. The interview outcomes will contribute to a report that will help us understand the current landscape and how the IAT may be able to assist aspects of your role. If you would like to be involved, please complete the online form below. I am grateful for the knowledge and skills I have learned throughout my studies. This has helped me to be a better manager and my knowledge in animal research has improved a lot.”“Unfortunately, with rising prices everywhere our departmental budget wasn’t able to stretch to allow me to continue my studies. I turned to AS-ET for help and they willingly agreed to fund 50% of my module with my department paying the rest. For anyone on the fence as to whether to give a Level 4 course a try I would say go for it! You will learn so much about the work going on in your facility as well as essay writing techniques and working to deadlines. I’m already in the process of signing up for the next module!”“The Masters programme is the end of my HE journey, but this does not mean that I will stop learning and enquiring as a part of my role and love of animals. I hope it permits me to be an example to my fellow technicians, proving that with hard work and at any age, anything is achievable. Once again this would not have been possible without the financial support of AS-ET and I am indebted to the trustees for enabling me to achieve my aims.”“Thanks to AS-ET, I was able to attend an NTCO workshop which has given me more insight into the NTCO role and given me areas of focus that I can develop in the future, while providing me with a support network of experienced NTCOs. The skills and support I have gained have empowered me to further influence and inspire others working with animals and to achieve the highest standards of training and welfare.” www.animalsinscienceeducationtrust.org.ukAS-ET is a charity with the purpose to further the advancement of education and promotion of excellence in the welfare of animals in science Kyle O’Sullivan MIATUniversity College London being awarded the Tecniplast prize for IAT HE Level 5 Victoria Roberts MIAT DSTLreceiving the AS-ET/West Middlesex Branch IAT HE Level 4 prize from Ken Applebee, Chair of TrusteesAS-ET Bursary prize winners (LtoR): Georgina Orosz, Victoria Roberts and Kyle O’Sullivan.

Bulletin18 • May 2024 RSPCA RebrandThis year marks 200 years of the RSPCA. That’s centuries of changing laws, industries, minds and animals’ lives. In partnership with our colleagues and stakeholders, we have revolutionised the way people think, feel and act towards animals. But as the world has changed, so must we. Animals are now facing some of the biggest threats in our history, from climate change to intensive farming, the cost of living and the ongoing effects of the pandemic. To refl ect this, the RSPCA has launched a signifi cant rebrand and has adapted its messaging to increase public engagement with the Society and its aims. You will now see us talking about For Every Kind. That means for every kind of animal, whether it’s helping thousands through our vital rescue work, or helping millions more through our advocacy, prevention and education work, both here and around the world. But it also means for every person, whoever they are, because we need everyone to get involved in Animal Welfare. We are not planning to change how we help lab animals. We will continue to work with the scientifi c community as we always have done, to help achieve the fullest implementation of the 3Rs (with Replacement as the ultimate objective) and robust ethical review of animal use.
