CHESAPEAKE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY | SOLOMONS, MDMAY 2022ISSUE 69Lab LinesDIRECTOR’S VIEW1IN THIS ISSUE:DIRECTOR’S VIEW235On Thursday the AAUW unit at CBL organized a picnic that was the rst in person social activity for two years . It was a huge success. Thanks to Lauren, Nina, Maddy and Stefenie for being the short order chefs, djs and party organizers. I look forward to doing it again soon. OUTREACHIN CASE YOU MISSED IT/ PUBLICATIONS4SAFETY CORNERThis next week will also see the REU students return to in person experiences on campus. I have also seen a number of summer interns start to show up. It is great to welcome all of these people back to the lab. I hope everyone has an enjoyable and productive summer. As we return to more in person events, I ask that we respect people’s choices over distancing and masking. We are almost universally vaccinated and boosted – but many have childcare, eldercare and personal health concerns that mean they will continue to choose to wear a mask or participate less in group events. Please take wearing a mask when rst meeting people in group settings as the default position.

Continued: In Case You Missed ItPlease welcome Monica Jones to CBL! Monica recently began her CBL journey as the Assistant Director of Finance & Business Operations. Previous to CBL, Monica was a Supervisor with Calvert County Public Schools in their Finance Department. Monica will be spending the next few weeks getting up to speed and attending various training sessions to learn all the University nancial systems. When not at CBL, Monica enjoys spending time with her family and granddaughter. Monica’s oce is located in Beaven Hall and she can be reached at mjones@umces.edu or x248.Per the conditions of their national accreditation through the New York State Environmental Laboratory Ap-proval Program (ELAP), NASL at CBL is subject to biennial in-depth audits. Recently the NASL crew successfully completed the most recent of these inspections, conducted virtually May 2-4, 2022. This is a cumbersome and tedious task under the best conditions. Conducting such an activity in a virtual space only compounds those challenges. Successful completion of these audits, as well as satisfactory performance on all prociency tests, ensure that NASL quality systems and analytical methods are maintained at the highest levels. NASL has suc-ceeded at both again in 2022. In conjunction with the annual renewal of its certication, NASL also expanded is scope of accreditation by ac-quiring certication for three additional parameters. All dissolved nutrient analyses oered by NASL now carry an ocial stamp of approval, per the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference Standards (2016) for the Category of Environmental Analyses of Non-Potable Water. Please see the table below for a list of the certied methods performed by NASL. PublicationsPalinkas, C. M., Orton, P., Hummel, M., Nardin, W., Sutton-Grier, A., Harris, L., ... & Williams, T.
