FOSTER FAQ What if I want to foster fail When will my foster be made active for adoption Several factors will be considered before a dog is made active All dogs have a mandatory 14 day quarantine decompression hold If you are wanting to adopt foster fail e mail foster dallasdogrrr org and contact your foster coordinator Barbara White Fosters have to pay the adoption fee to help cover basic vetting Puppies will go active after their 2nd round of shots Dogs that are 5 months or older must be altered before going to adopter A foster team member will contact you Once the dog is made active there is no foster failing at that time Once dog is approved for transport it can no longer be adopted How can you foster and then give the dog away It s ok to give your foster pup everything you have and let them go Isn t the objective to make them happy healthy and prepare them for their forever Yes it is Does your heart break a little when they leave Yes it does That means you ve done a great job Do we want updates from adopters Most definitely Can you foster fail Of course Until people spay neuter or we physically just can t anymore our plan is to foster There is another puppy out there that needs us Annie Housel Resident Puppy Foster Foster Failee Photos Courtesy of Renee Dowhaniuk RLD PhotographyTX 6 May 2021

CH 1 RESOURCE GUARDING Definition By Tiffany Baker Behavior exhibited to maintain access or attain access of something with significant value to the individual Human Example Some of us resource guard our desserts We don t punch anyone in the face for them not typically anyway but we make it clearly known that we will not be sharing Get your own K thanks We can see normal levels of resource guarding with our dogs and the things they find valuable This may look like playing keep away with their toys or stolen items hiding or burying their bones eating their food super fast or taking a toy from their dog friend Sometimes our dogs have a bit more stress about sharing and behavior can escalate into a scuffle between dogs or even a bite This has nothing to do with a lack of structure or discipline we are all doing our best Resource guarding exists due to an individual dog s early environmental experiences and at times genetics that has created a high level of fear or distrust of others near their valued resources Things Our Dogs May Guard Food or area typically fed Spaces Rooms Bones Sleeping areas like beds or couches Toys Valuable people caretakers Resource Guarding Canine Body Language Typically Looks Like Stillness or freezing Hovering over object valued object Whale eye whites of eyes exposed If Initial Warnings Are Ignored Teeth bared Verbal warnings low growling Air snaps biting Photo Courtesy of Renee Dowhaniuk RLD PhotographyTX How To Prevent Concerning Resource Guarding Behaviors Let your dogs eat in peace Petting handling your dog taking away their food bones while eating putting your hands in their food bowl does not help prevent or resolve resource guarding behavior in fact it can oftentimes create increased guarding behavior Instead of being a taker of things or further reinforcing their need to guard their things teach your dog that when you re near AWESOME stuff happens Example approach while eating and toss a piece of chicken into their food bowl and then walk away This creates fun feelings of excitement when you appear while your dog is in possession of resources Teach your pup to trade If you need to take an item from your dog offer something exciting in exchange Bonus Teach foundational cues like Drop Come for increased communication decreased confusion frustration Management If you have a dog who would rather not share specific items with other dogs or gets nervous around eating time give your dog a quiet controlled space to have those valuable items to prevent conflict behaviors from arising If your dog is exhibiting concerning resource guarding behavior that is difficult to manage seek out the assistance from a certified professional who has experience working with these behaviors 7 May 2021

FOSTER SURVIVAL GUIDE Photos Courtesy of Renee Dowhaniuk RLD PhotographyTX NEW ENVIRONMENT NEW SMELLS NEW PEOPLE OH MY By Tiffany Baker Owner Behavior Specialist Boss Babe Dog Training Imagine being transplanted to a foreign country Not only are you unfamiliar with your surroundings but you don t understand the language and you aren t familiar with anyone to guide you through this shocking environmental change This is similar to the shock your new dog may feel acclimating to their new home While some dogs are more resilient to change than others it s so important to provide your new dog with appropriate time space and support as they decompress and adjust to all of the newness around them www bossbabedogtraining com A quiet space to themselves With the sometimes overwhelming new environment it s important that your dog has a relaxing space that they can feel safe in I recommend a low traffic area that can be closed off like a spare bedroom or office type space A suitable crate for your pup is ideal to create a zen den for them during unsupervised time assuming they are comfortable with being crated if not you will want to slowly and positively introduce In this space you will want to provide your dog with plenty of enrichment opportunities filled Kongs puzzle toys chews Add in some classical music or white noise to drown out outside noises Avoid over handling or over exposure Now is the time for your new dog to acclimate to their surroundings try to avoid taking your dog to new places or offering them too much physical attention While it is totally okay and encouraged to comfort and offer your pup affection we want to keep in mind their desire for that physical touch Always ask for consent and pause your pets to determine their comfort level Separation from other pets This is highly recommended even if your current pets are well socialized and pro social with other dogs Not only may our new dog s normal behaviors be somewhat suppressed during this adjustment period meaning they may over or under react to certain situations our current resident dogs are also adjusting to sharing their space and your attention Create a predictable routine It feels safer when our dogs can anticipate how their day will go Predictability can help to build confidence and trust in their new environment Time Patience How long does this decompression period last The question we all want to know and the answer I give all too often It depends Every dog is an individual Let your new dog and their body language give you that answer Confidence when interacting with you loose happy wiggly body language can be good indicators that your new dog is feeling nice and comfy Most rescue organizations will recommend at least 2 weeks to separate and decompress 8 May 2021

FOSTER SURVIVAL GUIDE NETWORKING 101 Picture Perfect THIS NOT THAT The first time a potential adopter sees your foster dog will likely be through a picture on our website or social media First impressions are everything your foster needs to look their best while showcasing their personality in pictures Here are some quick tips on how you can capture your foster s perfect glamour shot Timing Location If you re looking for action shots have your photo shoot before the daily three mile run If you want a serene portrait make it after Also feeding your dog first is always a good idea as it leaves them relaxed It s a good idea to photograph pets in their preferred spots or enjoying a much loved pastime such as snoozing on the porch or catching a Frisbee We want our fosters to stand out in pictures not what is in the background Opt for a simple background that contrasts with their fur such as a white dog with a black background or a black dog with a white background The great outdoors and greenery also make great picture backgrounds When capturing a photo outdoors the best natural lighting is in the morning and evening The Shot Pictures of your foster should be crisp clear and have minimal to no editing or filters Sounds easy right For most of us the answer is no It can be a challenge to get our fosters to sit still and look into the camera Depending on what motivates them try using treats or their favorite toy to get their attention while you take their picture Make sure to take a lot of photos the more you take the better your chances of capturing the perfect shot Your foster dog should be the main attraction in pictures Ensure that you can clearly see them and that the photo is not blurry Selfies with your foster are great but pictures for networking should primarily be human free Check out this selfie stick that clips a treat onto your Photos Courtesy of Heather Fischer phone Dog Treat Selfie Stick Clip Kikkerland com 5 9 May 2021

2015 IN THE NEWS In 2013 Marina Tarashevsce dedicated her time to rescuing dogs in South Dallas and a year later she created a rescue called Marina s Groupies Patti Dawson then a volunteer would feed and rescue stray dogs Marina and Patti were part of the transformation by speaking with a local councilman and serving on the Survey Committee where they would track and count stray dogs Marina s Groupies would become Dallas Dog Rescue Rehab Reform in 2015 Dallas DogRRR gained nationwide attention in 2015 when an abandoned dog Hero got the attention of Marina and led her to a litter of ten sick newborn puppies and their exhausted mother Patti would assist Marina by frequently feeding and caring for the family of dogs and Patti became known as the Puppy Master This was the start of Patti transitioning to the role of President with Dallas DogRRR Heroic Abandoned Dog Leads Humans to 10 Sick Newborn Puppies By Fox News Insider Pet rescuers risk own lives to save shelter dogs from Harvey floods By Dallas Morning News In the beginning Dallas DogRRR s focus was rescuing street dogs in Southeast Dallas before taking on dogs with significant medical needs Then disaster hit in 2017 when Hurricane Harvey flooded a South Texas animal rescue group s shelter Without hesitation Patti and Dallas DogRRR volunteers rushed to the aid of Tall Tails Rescue and saved more than 130 animals from drowning in the flooded kennels Dallas DogRRR was put back on the map when Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco featured a donation link for Dallas DogRRR on her Instagram for 2 weeks With the support of fosters volunteers adopters and supporters Dallas DogRRR has continued to rescue both dogs and cats who would have been otherwise euthanized It s hard to let our fosters go it is even harder to say goodbye they do not know they are in a temporary placement I have said from the beginning that each foster takes a little piece of our heart every single time I strongly believe that they take that piece of our heart to allow us to have a little space to help the next dog I m able to the stepping stone that bridges that gap from the street to forever we give them love we teach them trust before transitioning to forever PATTI DAWSON President Dallas DogRRR 17 May 2021
