Did you know that SierraLeone’s maternal mortalityratio is six times higher thanglobal targets, and infantmortality is the highest in theworld?Orphan PreventionStrategiesMaternal Health inSierra LeoneGlobal Maternal HealthMarginalized communities aredisproportionately affected by maternalmortality.The death of a mother can lead tofinancial instability for families.Children who lose their mothers faceincreased risks of poverty, malnutrition,and lack of education.Preventing maternal deaths helps keepfamilies together and protects childrenfrom becoming orphans.Maternal deaths have dropped by 74%over the past 20 years.The current rate remains high, with 443mothers dying per 100,000 births—tentimes the global goal.The target is to reduce this number to300 per 100,000 by 2025.Infant mortality is also a major concern,with the highest rate globally reaching75 deaths per 1,000 births. Many of these deaths are preventablewith better access to skilled birthattendants and quality care.Every day, 800 women die frompregnancy-related causes—that’s oneevery two minutes.While maternal deaths have declined by34% since 2000, more investment is stillneeded.
