2 Commanders’ Report Cdr. Bert Koenig, P Cell (585) 770-3435 Hello fellow Rochester Sail and Power Squadron members, Welcome to March/April issue of our Chart. I like the sound of that. It means that Spring and boating season is just on the horizon. It’s probably time to confirm those slip assignment payments have been made. Thank you to those that were able to attend the recent Founder’s Day lunch at Proietti's Italian Restaurant in conjunction with our fellow District 6 Iroquois Sail and Power Squadron. A fine offering of the Rochester Original Chicken French was enjoyed by all. It was another wonderful opportunity to mingle with fellow boaters outside our normal circle. A special thank you to Marianne Pecoraro Kingdom and Sue Watts Crenshaw of our respective squadrons for coordinating and pulling off an event that is often a challenge when just one squadron is involved, let alone two full memberships. Thank you to all that volunteered their time to setup and present our wonderful organization at this year’s Rochester Boat Show. This is always a great opportunity to meet fellow boaters and inform them of the great benefits of joining the Rochester Sail and Power Squadron. Looking ahead, the first week of March has three classes kicking off and we have a medley of topics at our next General Meeting. Our next General Meeting on Wed March 4 at GYC at 7pm will feature a trio of topics including, an update on preparations for this year’s Boaters Against Cancer (BAC) event, A presentation of our exciting new squadron website and the little known DAN Boater travel Insurance benefit that comes along with Squadron membership. Looking later into March we have the D6 Spring Conference in Corning, NY. March 27-29. The registration deadline is quickly approaching March 4 to avoid the 5% late fee. This is a great opportunity to meet and interact with fellow boaters from across Central and Western New York State. We are currently looking to have the Rochester Fire Dept. Water Rescue Team present at our April 1 General Meeting. Speaking of volunteer organizations such as a fire dept., we on the Bridge have been having discussions about how we as an organization can also volunteer our gift of time to those in our community in need, as there are several in our communities that can always use a hand or two with the great work they do for those less fortunate. Then there’s the Commander’s Brunch to look forward to sometime in April, still working on a date and local that fits. Plans are in motion for our annual Picnic June 1 and Rendezvous July 23-26 (most likely/tentative). Boating Season will soon be upon us!
3 Executive Officer Report Lt./C Faye Towner Ahoy to all!!! Well the Ground hog says that we will not encounter six more weeks of winter and that was four weeks ago… Boats in the water soon!! Just want to remind you that we still have sign- ups for Boater Safety Classes. From a community engagement perspective, I would like to share that we need to be more engaged with other community organizations, so we can leverage members on their organizations to engage with America’s Boating Club. Since we are a 501C3 non-profit organization, we can partner and collaborate with other 501C3 organizations to host or co-host events in our communities. This will help market and provide education on who we are. One such organization that I have solicited is “FOOD LINK” planning for an event with them in April is still in the works, which may include a tour of their organization. I have enclosed a link to their website and though we may not garner their clients as our members, we may be able to garner members through publicity of our participation or their employees and benefactors. https://foodlinkny.org/ What is important is that we are not seen as a club who is not concerned with the communities we live and play in. A thought that resonants with me when I am volunteering is “Volunesia (noun) that moment when you forget you are volunteering to help change lives and realize that its actually changing yours.” We can apply this to our organization as well we need volunteers to help with and be on committees so those who are board members and executive team members are not the ones, we rely on to do everything. How does that saying go “Uncle Sam Needs YOU!” Well America’s Boating Club NEEDS YOU. Ask anyone of the officers or board members how you can be more involved to help plan events for the organization and staff boat shows or events. This is your club and we want you to feel like you can do and plan things that you may enjoy!
4 Administrative Officer Report Lt/C Marianne Pecoraro Kingdom, P Our speaker for the March meeting will be Diane Rhodes, she has redone the website and will give us all highlights and how to maneuver around it. 11 What is a Vessel Safety Check? A Vessel Safety Check is a courtesy examination of a boat to verify the presence and operable condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. The inspection is quick and easy. Many trailerable boats can be inspected in ten minutes. All boaters will receive a copy of the evaluation form at the end of the inspection. Boats that meet the safety requirements will receive a Vessel Safety Check (VSC) decal to be displayed onboard. If your boat is displaying a current VSC decal, local marine patrols and the Coast Guard will not stop you for a random check unless you are acting in an unsafe manner. It is a free check of a vessel’s equipment for compliance with federal and state safety requirements. Some of the items checked are: Proper display of numbers Registration/Documentation Personal Flotation Devices Visual Distress Signals Fire extinguishers Ventilation Backfire Flam Control Sound Producing Devices Navigational Lights Federal, State and Local Requirements Overall Vessel Condition Benefits of a Vessel Safety Check: Identify safety and money saving opportunities, which might include insurance discounts Prevent citations by meeting federal and state safety equipment requirements. Increasing awareness of safety practices to avoid a accidents and costly breakdowns A Vessel Safety Check can reduce accidents and injuries by educating the boater as to the value and use of marine safety equipment and other safe practices on the water. All Vessel Safety Checks are conducted by a Vessel Safety Examiner who is a trained specialist and either a member of the US Power Squadrons or the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Examiners will also make recommendations and discuss safety related issues that will make boat owners safer boaters.
